CROESO—WELCOME SHWMAE

Happy spring! The theme of this issue of Penarth View is Bold Beginnings, and whatever that may mean to you individually, I think it will hold a certain resonance with everyone. As we’ve seen snowdrops and daffodils already take their tentative first moments in the sunlight this year, so too do we, as social creatures, leave behind our isolation hibernation. At the time of writing, travel within Wales is now possible, barbers and hairdressers are (thankfully) open again, and soon after Easter the high street will start its great defrost. For hospitality, the picture is less certain, but we all hope that as we spring into summer, we will all have a small sense of normality. We know the high street is looking forward to opening up again, but the town’s resilient businesses have been busy throughout this last lockdown launching ShopAppy Penarth, a new online marketplace for the town, where you can shop with all your favourite independent businesses, pay once, and have all your products delivered to you. It’s a real alternative to Amazon, and you can check it out at www.shopappy.com/penarth With a bold new beginning, however, will come a sense of trepidation. These feelings are natural and understandable, and as we do socialise more, travel

more, and enjoy life more, it is very important to acknowledge that everyone is on their own journey out of isolation. The message must be: be patient, be kind, be considerate. And it is with this in mind that we’ve included some articles in this issue around anxiety, stepping out of lockdown step-bystep, and how to deal with separation anxiety in our pets, who have got used to having us around the house. Elsewhere in this issue you will find some great nutrition, fitness and wellbeing articles, Penarth’s Biggest What’s On Guide returns for another season of virtual events, and we also have our ever-popular business and community pages, filled to the brim with short news stories from the town. As always, thank you to all our amazing writers, contributors, advertisers and sponsors. We really could not do what we do without your unwavering support. Diolch! And, finally, a little news from Penarth View HQ. It is with great excitement that we hope to launch three new sister titles to Penarth View over the summer. Our fantastic new editions, Cowbridge View, Pontcanna View and Roath Park View will bring our unique publishing magic to these three gorgeous little areas. Work is already well underway to launch these titles, so please do keep your eyes peeled. Please do get in touch if you are interested in these new titles—we’d love to work with you! Please enjoy reading this issue, and do let me know what you think. Until the summer! —John john@penarthview.co.uk

POSITIVE VIBES ONLY

Turning negatives into positives has been a mantra we’ve all tried to live by this past year. And Willmore’s 1938 has done just that. After being on the receiving end of a few graffiti tags, they decided to turn this unwelcome negative into a transformational positive. To celebrate Willmore’s 1938’s rich history, a mysterious mural has been painted on the side of the building. The terraces in Upper Penarth (north of Windsor Road) were known during the Victorian era as Daggertown. Alan Thorne, a local Penarth historian, describes the area at that time as a “close knit, cosmopolitan, pulsating, violent area with seamen’s boarding houses, legal and illegal drinking clubs, and 10 pubs, an area that was home to harlots and hobblers, shell-backs and sinners, mariners and murderers.”

PenarthView #LovePenarth

Willmore’s 1938 has always embraced the building’s fascinating history. Through the exploration of the history behind the next-door Washington Cinema, which was opened in 1938 by brothers Lawrence (Jack) and Oliver Willmore, it gave the name to Willmore’s 1938. Continuing their love and fascination for this rich history, the mural of Jack Willmore, done by local artist Malcolm Murphy, now stands proudly on the side of the building. We love to see Penarth’s history displayed in this way, and Willmore’s 1938 have turned a negative into a positive, and have given us a great feeling of pride and hope. 

THE FOOD HALL AT HAMPTONS

Following the launch of the Food Hall at Hamptons last year, owners Andy Bradshaw and Peter Knowles have used the lockdown time since Christmas to increase and enhance their food offering. The area devoted to food upstairs at the Ludlow Lane store has now been significantly increased to allow the introduction of new product categories. “There was such an amazing reaction to the launch of the Food Hall last year” said Andy “that we decided to offer our customers even more choice by giving more space to our collections of artisan foods.” The big challenge for Andy and Peter was how to create more space for the Food Hall without detracting from the rest of the store and reducing the choice of other products. “After considering all the options we decided to incorporate our office and store room into the main 8

shop area” explained Peter. Lockdown provided Andy and Peter with the perfect opportunity to undertake what turned out to be quite a radical project. In addition to creating more space for the Food Hall, the project has also created additional space for new kitchen and dining products, home interiors, and fashion accessories. With new lighting and flooring throughout, the whole of the upstairs at Hamptons has been transformed into a light and airy space that’s filled with an amazing selection of products. Andy and Peter are passionate about food and also about quality. “Identifying dedicated, artisan food producers who share our passion has been really important” said Andy about the challenge of finding suppliers. With the shelves and chillers now full of an incredibly diverse range of mouth-watering products you will definitely struggle to leave the Food Hall at Hamptons empty handed.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS From a young entrepreneur to filming crew on your doorstep, here at Penarth View we are keeping you in the loop with this season’s short stories.

Refurbishing old, unwanted laptops for struggling families

Penarth resident, Andrew Smillie, co-founder of Penarth Sounds has started a campaign aiming to help families and children in need. Andrew is refurbishing old, unwanted laptops and distributing them to struggling families in his community. He’s turning unwanted laptops into easy-to-use Chromebooks, giving these families access to technology. Understanding the struggle of having to home school children and how little the government has done to support families, Andrew is definitely doing his part for the community.

New houses to boost Penarth’s community From struggle to success

Penarth entrepreneur, Catherine Williams, wins a place on the accelerator programme, designed to champion diversity in entrepreneurship in Wales. 24-year-old Catherine was one of 23 people to take part in a Welsh Government-funded 12 week immersive programme. Helping her to launch and grow her business idea, a luxury lingerie brand, O’Honni.

Penarth pickers

In February this year, Naomi Burke set up the Facebook group, Penarth Pickers to tackle the increasing litter problem in Penarth in recent months. The independent group, which now has over 200 members, have been venturing out to help clean up our community. It’s great to see the drive in our community to keep our streets clean and help protect the environment. 12

Highlands’ Penarth housing development have skilfully built 8 new four and five bedroom properties on Old Barry Road in Penarth, which as a result will generate more revenue in council tax for the local community. This new development will also address other issues such as fly tipping. These properties are selling fast and with good reason.

Penarth woman spearheads project with Welsh Gymnastics

Penarth resident, Natalie Morgan, has worked within the performing arts sector for several years and has successfully completely a Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4) in Leadership and Management. Using her vast skill set, she is now leading a gymnastics club project for young girls and women from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic community in Cardiff. This group is a great success in the community.

Penarth Pier Pavilion in new hands

After their 125-year lease, Penarth Arts and Crafts Ltd (PACL) have had to return the Penarth Pier Pavilion into the hands of the Vale of Glamorgan Council. With a lot of the Pavilion’s future still in the air, there is little we are certain of. But we are certain that whatever happens will be in the best interest of our community.

Free meals for the community

Llandough Primary School are doing there bit for the community by offering free food bags for those in need. Others have helped them in this venture, receiving a £3,000 grant from the Moondance Foundation, and Morrisons in Cardiff Bay offered a 15% discount on food. This is amazing work these people are doing to help families hit worst by the pandemic, across Llandough, Cogan, Penarth and Barry.

back, no matter the weather. Anna and Tim have now raised over £5,000, thousands more than their £100 target.

Penarth’s library of things

Penarth embraces sustainability with a place for residents to donate things you own but don’t need, and borrow things you need but don’t own. Library of Things will launch in Penarth this April. This new venture is another great way for the people of Penarth to help support each other and the environment.

From trash to treasure

Sully resident, Katie Morgan, has turned her hobby into a jewellery business, Sea Rose Jewellery. Katie uses discarded sea glass from St Mary’s Well Bay and turns it into jewellery. After collecting sea glass from her walks on the beach, she wanted to turn them into something beautiful. Katie is now looking to make this hobby her full-time job.

Two miles a day for charity

Tim Musson and his daughter Anna Musson walked two miles a day to raise money for the Barry-based charity, Vale Plus, a day centre for disabled people. Anna, who has Down’s syndrome, and her father walked from their home to Penarth Pier and

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS 300 miles in 30 days

Two Penarth residents have raised over £1,700 for Mind, the mental health charity, beating their target of £1,500. Friends Jacob Mills and Sam Birch-Hurst decided to run 300 miles in 30 days to raise money and awareness for mental health. The young university students wanted to bring light to the issues of mental health, especially during this difficult time.

There’s no place like Penarth

The Times chooses Penarth as one of the best places to live in Wales. With our stunning sights, bustling high street, strong community, and only a short trip to the Welsh capital, it’s no surprise Penarth has been judged a great place to live. The words from the judges were: “Quite what the top-hatted shipping magnates who built the mansions on Marine Parade — still one of Wales’s premier addresses — would make of the paddleboarders navigating Cardiff Bay is anyone’s guess. But it is just that sort of adventurous spirit that burns brightly in this fancy, friendly — and seriously fit town. “Penarth takes its wellbeing seriously. The yoga classes at Yoga One and pilates classes at John Bruno Total Training went online during lockdown to keep the vinyasas flowing. And for real dogs, rather than downward-facing ones, there’s always a walk, jog or bike ride on the barrage to Mermaid Quay, along the seafront to the clifftops or through Cosmeston Lakes Country Park to help with mental and physical health.”

14

Penarth Pier takes centre stage

Once again, Penarth is being used as a filming location. For the past few months, residents have seen the filming of the new Sky Cinema Original ‘Six Minutes to Midnight’, starring Eddie Izzard on Penarth Pier. We’re very excited to see our beloved Penarth Pier on screen once again.

Barry and Vale South Wales Police officers rewarded for service Three South Wales Police officers were awarded for their work in supporting and protecting the Vale of Glamorgan over this past year. Nominated by their colleagues for their efforts, PC Steve Powell, PC Jamie Williamson and Police Sergeant Samantha Johnson received certificates of service. 

DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY Influencer

Dave Deane

Penarth-based Veterinary Surgeon

Having lived and worked in South Wales for 11 years, initially in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Cardiff, I have finally found my home in beautiful Penarth, where I also volunteer as an RNLI crew member. Growing up as the son of a dentist may have influenced my passion for veterinary dentistry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it many challenges and uncertainties. Many of us will be experiencing increased anxiety, and the same is true for our pets. As we hopefully move towards a more normal world and lockdown restrictions begin to be lifted, we will go through another period of change to our lives. This too will affect our pets and below I will discuss separation anxiety in dogs.

16

For those cat lovers amongst us: sorry. This article will focus on our canine friends. Although cats do suffer from separation anxiety, they do far better as a solitary animal, and it is beyond the scope of this article to discuss.

www.penarthview.co.uk

Whether you have been working from home or are simply spending far more time at home during weekends and evenings, our pets have got used to us being around more. Dogs in particular are very social animals and would naturally live in family groups. They would normally choose to be in our company, so when we have been around a lot, and this then changes, we need to prepare them for this change. Symptoms of separation anxiety include: Vocalisation: barking, whining or howling. Panting and drooling. Pacing. Inappropriate toileting. These symptoms are normally worst in the first ten to twenty minutes. They may then settle but some dogs will often then choose to chew something with their owners’ scent on it, and surround themselves with it for comfort. You must remember that although it is natural to be annoyed or angry that your home or possessions have been damaged, punishment will not help. If your dog looks guilty, this is nothing more than them responding to your disappointment or anger, and they are trying to diffuse the situation and appease you. If you then punish them, you will often make things worse. Dogs associate punishment with what is happening at the time, not with the act that you are annoyed with. They will therefore not only be anxious about being left alone but become scared on your return. We thus need to train them to be left alone. If you have got a new dog during the last year or your routines are likely to change in the coming months, now is a good time to start. Training takes time and cannot be rushed.

✓ ✓ ✓ ✓

PenarthView #LovePenarth

Key tips First, try leaving them on their own in a room of the house while you are still around. Stair gates and chew toys are useful tools for this step. Go about your normal daily routine. When they are comfortable with this try leaving the house for a few minutes using the same distraction techniques—chews and toys. If they react negatively to you preparing to leave the house you may need to desensitise them to the sounds and actions of you putting on your coat, shoes or getting your keys. Once you have managed to leave them for a short length of time slowly increase the length of time that they are left alone. On your return try to keep your greeting with them controlled and predictable, and remember to avoid the temptation to punish them if they have toileted or chewed inappropriately.

If you and your dog are struggling with behavioral issues, please seek professional advice. Your vet will be able to help you find a reputable behaviorist. Also visit www.apbc. org.uk and www.abtc.org.uk 17

STAYING CREATIVE THROUGH COVID

How is life currently in the creative industry?

Last year, we spoke to three young creatives about working in the arts during a global pandemic, one of whom was Eleanor Webster, an actor, writer and recent graduate of the BA Drama programme at the University of Exeter. Katherine Peach caught up once again with Eleanor, to see how things are now, being a creative through COVID-19. Last time we spoke to Eleanor, she discussed how opportunities for her and other young creatives fell through at the time of the first lockdown, and how the government were doing very little to support them. But she kept faith in her future in the industry and continued to create during a difficult time.

18

It’s strange. In lockdown, we knew that things can only be online. The arts are in the same position as many people right now—waiting for the next stage of phasing out of lockdown, uncertain and unable to make concrete plans.

Have your views on the government’s handling on the creative industry changed?

So many people have been left behind in their funding strategies. Freelancers, in particular, have been entirely forgotten about. That being said, the Cultural Recovery Fund has been really helpful, especially for local and community theatre.

Any advice for young creatives starting out?

Use this time to think about yourself outside of your craft. Practising will make you better, but great art reflects the wider world. A lot of us thought

THE JEWELLERS we were living a rich life, when in fact, we were just busy. The resilience you’ve found during this time, will serve you throughout your career.

What continues to drive you?

The art that inspires me, the stories that stick with me and excite me. I’m lucky to be on a post-graduate course, which by necessity, drives me to continue. But even if I wasn’t, I’d continue to create. I’m not very good at sitting still! And seeing how important stories have become to people reminded me how valuable art is.

Do you see any improvements in how the industry is treated in the future?

Funding. We need the government to help venues of different sizes, not just large West End venues. The initial guidance for performances was clearly written by someone who had no concept of how theatre works. Finally, freelancers make up the majority of the creative workforce and we’ve been left to fend for ourselves. The government needs to recognise our importance and put the right help in place.

For over 57 years, Rowley’s have been selecting only the best jewellery, watches and gifts to grace the shelves of the store. Mostly focusing on my writing. However, I did do some voiceover work for Soundart Radio on Dartmoor. Their new radio play, Brutus of Troy, is airing on March 31st and April 1st. I’m also continuing to work on my podcast, “Deck of Many Aces”, which is nearing its six month anniversary! This passion project has been really fun and inspiring to do.

What are your plans for the future? In 2020, I had a meticulous fiveyear plan for how I was going to make a successful living in the arts. Of course, all those plans immediately disintegrated. Since then, I have become a little anti-plan! Instead, I’m keeping my ear to the ground for any exciting opportunities. I’ll be staying in Manchester for as long as I can, and potentially making work with some new connections. I’m not sure where I’ll end up, but the idea of having a “career” is quite oldfashioned in the creative industry. I just hope it’s an exciting journey!

HOW CAN I HELP? Focus on your breathing

HOW TO CALM YOUR ANXIETY Finding little ways to reduce your stress and anxiety throughout the day will make you happier and will leave you feeling more in control with your life.

Rreplace fearful

thoughts Words by Katherine Peach, Penarth View Sales Associate

Even before the world turned upside down, living with anxiety Stay present for was a very real problem many people. We all feel anxious from time to time but for some people this feeling can be overwhelming and can take over their lives. Phone a loved one

We always talk about what people with anxiety can do to help themselves, but if you know or are living with someone who suffers from anxiety, there are things you can do to help them. Even the smallest things can make a big difference. For people who don’t suffer with anxiety, or other mental illnesses, it can be difficult to know where to start. You don’t want to say the wrong thing, or even make it worse. Especially if the person you’re trying to help, doesn’t want that help in the first place. But something important to remember, is that just putting that effort in and taking those first steps to help is more value than you might ever know. If you’re unsure if someone you know is struggling with anxiety, or other mental illnesses, here are some signs to look out for: changes in their sleep or appetite, rapid or dramatic

mood changes, social withdrawal or loss of interest in hobbies, apathy, illogical thinking, nervousness, or problems with concentration, memory or critical thinking. If you are noticing these signs in someone, on the right are some things you can to do help. Although you want to do your best to help, remember to take care of yourself as well. Create boundaries for yourself and if you ever feel like it’s too much for you to handle alone or feel that you don’t have the tools to help, encourage them to seek professional help.  Mind Cymru provide advice and support for anyone experiencing a mental health problem. If you see a sudden change in their behaviour, don’t just brush it off and don’t always wait for them to bring it up. Simply asking if they want to talk about it can make a big difference.

Express concern To you it might be obvious that you care and are there to help, but it wont be to them. Comforting words and affirmations go a long way.

Learn their patterns of anxiety, and check in. For example, if their anxieties are typically centred around school, check in on them after school or when they’re doing homework.

Understand that they might not comprehend their feelings themselves. Be patient.

Be open about your own anxieties, let them know they’re not alone in their feelings.

Simply ask Sometimes all you have to do is ask what’s the best way you can help them.

MAKE TIME TO TALK Give them a safe place to express themselves.

Don’t dismiss their feelings, even if they seem over-exaggerated or misplaced.

Don’t be disheartened if they don’t open up. They are navigating the same uncertain waters as you are. Sometimes all you can do is create a safe space for them to figure things out themselves.

LOOKING BACK AT 2020 POSITIVES Scotland made history in November by becoming the first nation in the world to guarantee free and universal access to period products. Words by Katherine Peach, Penarth View Sales Associate

Through the chaos of the past year, with all the news we’d rather forget, there may have been moments last year that were washed away by COVID-19. Here are some happy, exciting, and heart-warming stories you may have missed.

Campaigners welcomed the move, claiming Scotland was setting a “bloody great example” for other nations to follow. “Scotland’s decision is a major win for menstrual equity, recognising that the needs of women and people who menstruate matter, and providing products accordingly, for everyone who needs them,” said the charity, Bloody Good Period. “We now need the same kind of decisive leadership and action that we’ve just seen in Scotland, throughout the UK.”

Hotel staffers have been hailed as unsung heroes after they refused to close during Coronavirus lockdowns so they could offer up their rooms to homeless people for free. More than 45 rough sleepers have been staying at the upmarket Fownes Hotel in Worcester since the COVID-19 restrictions were put in place in March. In a heartwarming show of gratitude, the guests have since begun doing odd-jobs around the hotel, including gardening, cleaning the rooms, and building new brick walls and patios.

The late Captain Sir Tom Moore raised more than £32m for NHS charities.

Thomas Moore, or as most knew him, Captain Tom, the former British Army officer raised more than £32 million for NHS charities by walking 100 lengths of his garden. He only set out to raise £1,000 but quickly caught the hearts of the world. Sir Tom Moore turned 100 on 30 April last year, later being knighted on 12 July. 24

Africa was declared free of wild polio after four years without a reported case.

On 25 August 2020, the independent Africa Regional Certification Commission (ARCC) for Polio Eradication officially announced that Africa was now free from wild polio. Relentless efforts by governments, donors, frontline healthcare workers, and communities have saved millions of children from polio’s crippling life-long paralysis.

Kamala Harris makes history as the first woman, the first Black and the first Asian-American Vice President of the United States of America. Aside from the celebration of Biden’s win over Trump, the BidenHarris victory was a sight of the change we both wanted and needed.

Front line workers take the spotlight. Everyone did their part this year. Staying inside, working from home, wearing your masks and washing your hands. But we can all agree that this year, front line workers have taken the spotlight. From NHS to baristas, public transport drivers to teachers, we can’t thank them enough. Not only doing an amazing job to help keep this country going, but putting their health at risk to do their jobs.

Staying at home led to a record drop in global carbon emissions.

None of us like being stuck indoors but we can’t deny the positive impact it’s had on our environment. Global greenhouse gas emissions fell by roughly 2.4 billion tons this year, a 7% drop from 2019. The largest decline on record!

A new plastic-eating enzyme could be a solution to the single-use plastic problem.

Throughout lockdown last year, the world saw changes in our environment, with many counties reporting cleaner air, trash-less beaches and less traffic. A team of scientists in the United States have engineered a new enzyme, PETase, that is capable of breaking down thermoplastic. What would normally take hundreds of years, the new enzyme can do in a matter of days.  25

UNSPOKEN RULES The power of no

Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Features Editor

After a year of being out of practice socialising, I’m sure the thought of going back to normal fills us with joy and a dash of apprehension. In a year where rules have governed even the smallest of life’s liberties, I’ve been thinking of some of those unspoken rules and how they can help us navigate through the new ‘golden age’ of life after COVID-19.

32

Say it now. No. No. No. Whether it’s saying ‘no’ to your friend that you won’t be breaking lockdown rules, ‘no’ because you can’t face another Zoom session with a coworker who doesn’t make their bed, or ‘no’ because you’re washing your hair that night (Believe me, that works and I’m bald!). Discover the positive power of saying ‘no’. You’ll feel better, have more space for yourself, and be a better person for those around you.

Holding a grudge?

People breaking the rules grinding your gears? Oh, that’s a toughie. It could be a birthday party with no social distancing, a runner passing by too close to you in your daily exercise time, or a social media post that makes you want to scream “PANDEMIC!” Remember that you’re doing your part, encourage those around you to do theirs, and simply “snooze” those who willingly plaster their “Throwback Thursday” Instagram posts. You’ve got enough going on. Ditch the anger and frustration, and focus on you.

www.penarthview.co.uk

I’ll miss that

What will you miss from lockdown? I bet you can’t wait to get back to the 45-minute work commute, meal deals from Tesco, or the smell of Karen’s tuna sandwich at lunchtime (sorry, Karen). No? I didn’t think so. Transport yourself forward in time when normality will be here again. Will you miss seeing your kids come home from school at 3pm, having a friendly lunchtime chat with your neighbour, or never missing a parcel delivery from one of your local high street shops again? Think now about getting that balance right, and don’t be afraid to put those steps in place when the time comes.

Equal opportunities

Whether you marched with the Black Lives Matter movement, gave to a food bank during your weekly shop, celebrated all the wonderful women in your life for International Women’s Day, or watched the news in horror at the thought of the American election going in the favour of a man who applies a shade of Ronseal’s Deep Denial, I mean Deep Mahogany wood stain to his skin! It’s clear social and economic divides are alive and real. The pandemic has taught us that change comes from collective action. Get to know those who you would never have spoken to before. They may surprise you.

All by myself

Whether Eric or Céline’s backingtrack to the last 12 months fills you with dread or gives you a sense of empowerment, one thing we all need to continue to do is to keep looking out for each other—especially those who live by themselves. Keep that contact with the elderly neighbour down the road, the fiercely independent friend, and those who reached out for a chat during lockdown. Be a darlin’!

PenarthView #LovePenarth

Dress to impress

I’ve been guilty of the odd Zoom meeting wardrobe choice being far from acceptable working attire this year. Although dressing down has its benefits, it’s comfortable, more environmentally friendly, and has also been linked to boosting productiveness in the short term, many of us need a fresh look and change to keep us stimulated. Our wardrobes are an easy way to express ourselves in a world where we need to be apart for a little while longer. So, put on that disco glitter jacket for the online Zumba class, grab those ties at the back of the wardrobe for that work call, and put on your favourite colour to make you pop and feel great.

Yes, I can do that!

For sure, we’ve had a taste of the simple life, whether we’ve liked it or not this past year! Cancelled holiday plans, no visits to the local pub, and not being able to see your favourite auntie has made us all very cautious of making social plans—how do we even have a conversation with another person these days? Yes, putting the first date in the diary to explore what lies outside of Penarth, or going to see your dearly missed bestie can be a little scary, but if you keep it simple, it’ll be more achievable. No fuss, no frills, no disasters! 

LET’S GET RID OF LAZY Words by Katherine Peach, Penarth View Sales Associate

At one time or another, we’ve all been called lazy. But what if I said the term ‘lazy’ is more damaging than you realise. Social psychologist, Devon Price, in his paper ‘Laziness Does Not Exist’ said, “situational constraints typically predict behaviour far better than personality, intelligence, or other individual-level traits.” A lot of research has surfaced recently proposing this same idea: that being lazy doesn’t exist. Instead there are just unseen barriers stopping you from doing certain activities. For example, not wanting to do the dishes doesn’t make you lazy. Instead, you may be tired, unmotivated, stressed or overwhelmed. Using the term lazy is a blanket statement that finalises and simplifies our behaviour. But human behaviour is far more complicated than that. By doing this, we don’t think to look further into ourselves to find the real reason for our behaviour. Removing the word lazy allows us to look deeper so we can begin to break down our actions.

34

Engraining this term in young people’s heads leads them to believe it’s true. So whenever they don’t want to do simple tasks, they don’t see it as anything but laziness. When in fact it could be calling out to a bigger issue. If a behaviour doesn’t make sense, like not having the energy to do simple things, a part of the context is missing. So next time you find yourself using the term lazy, for yourself or others, look for the unseen barriers causing this behaviour. If you are finding it difficult to get things done, here’s a few tips to make those tasks a little easier: Break up bigger jobs into small tasks. Set a time for yourself to do certain things. Remember you don’t have to do all your tasks in one day. Be kind to yourself. Remove distractions. Reframe your thoughts. Instead of “there’s so much to do”, try “I might not get everything done today but I’ll make good progress.” By being able to recognise and understand these changes in our behaviour, we can start to improve the way we look at ourselves and others. We have to start putting self care first and not to be so hard on ourselves. You’re doing great! 

LOVING LIVING HERE FOR 51 YEARS In the past year, we’ve all developed a new appreciation for our homes and how important finding the right one can be. David Baker and his team know this better than anyone. David set up his business with Frank Powell 51 years ago, seeing the industry in ways others didn’t, leading to his success. This family-run business has an unrivalled knowledge of our lovely seaside town.

What has David Baker & Co done to adjust to this past year?

For the safety of our staff and our customers, all my colleagues are now working from home. I have been working from the office, on my own, throughout this past year. All the correct social distancing measures have been put in place and we’re strictly doing viewings with firm buyers only.

This past year people have spent most of their time inside. What advice do you have for finding that perfect home?

To find that perfect home is an impossible task. My advice for people looking for a new house, is to aim for 6/10 of your priorities and do it up in your own style and taste. Only you can turn that space into your perfect home. Doing this may also increase 36

its value, so if you’re willing to go through a little pain from the building work, the rewards can be great.

What is it about Penarth that makes it so special?

Penarth is a very special place to live. The beautiful walks, the coastal views, and with only a quick train journey to Cardiff city centre. But what really makes Penarth special is its high street, with that strong sense of community, and always aiming to help and support each other.

Why do your customers come to you? We are well known in the community and we have decades of invaluable local knowledge. With our straight and honest approach, we will always try to help both the vendor and the buyer. Our customers can

www.penarthview.co.uk

always rely on me being in the office, pandemic or not. Then, with Richard, Craig and Hannah in the office, with their new ideas, it’s a perfect mix.

What has been one positive to come out of this year?

Despite everything David Baker and his team have faced this past year, their customers have always been able to rely on them to do what they do best—keeping up the traditional values of the business whilst incorporating the new ideas from his team.

What’s your favourite thing about Penarth?

At David Baker & Co. we pride ourselves on providing a personal service that is tailored around your property. Established in Penarth in 1969, we are a family-run business with a longstanding association and an unrivalled knowledge of this glorious, Victorian seaside town. So, whether you are buying or selling, letting or perhaps investing in the area, we are passionate about the very service we offer and the time that we invest in our clients.

Although for a time, we may have lost the camaraderie of the office, it has meant that people do care more now. Two years ago, people could be quite abrupt, wrapped up in their own busy lives. But now, people are more patient and understanding. There’s a softening in people’s attitudes. We’re seeing more stories of compassion, like Tim Musson and his daughter Anna, good family friends, who walked two miles every day for a month to raise money for Vale Plus, a Barry-based day centre for disabled people. I really do hope that sense of understanding and sensitivity to others will continue.

Location, location, location! Aside from its great access to Cardiff, Penarth has the city, the coast, and the country at its doorstep. With a brilliant choice of restaurants—with great service to be had in each of them—the vibrant high street and that strong sense of community among residents and businesses, there really is nowhere better to live in the world.

ACCELERATED LEARNING

Westbourne has supported students both academically and personally at the highest level throughout lockdown and now during their return to the classroom. The school extended the spring term for all Prep School students to allow its youngest learners extra time to reestablish social bonds back in the physical classroom, and implemented a number of additional initiatives to encourage pupils to flourish during the pandemic. The launch of Westbourne Online in March 2020

The appointment of a Director of Online Education in November 2019 meant that Westbourne moved seamlessly to full online learning from the first day of school closures. With older students (Years 3-13) using Google Classroom and younger students (Nursery-Year 2) using 48

SeeSaw, the school provided intensive online learning for all ages, including classroom teaching, group learning sessions and wellbeing activities ranging from mindfulness and sport, to forest and beach school. In March 2020, they integrated Century Tech as part of Westbourne Online, a ground-breaking online learning platform backed by AI and neuroscience. They were only one of five schools in South Wales to be using AI-assisted learning.

Unparalleled pastoral support during lockdown

The school ensured regular contact with learners, giving academic and personal support. Students still felt connected to the school and their teachers, and this same level of access was made available to parents as well. Unlike many boarding schools, Westbourne ensured a continuity of care for its boarding students and those living with host families. Facilities

www.penarthview.co.uk

remained open for students who were unable to get flights home, and this gave them a sense of comfort and stability during a worrying time. “As a boarding house student, I was initially concerned about how boarding was going to function during lockdown. However, when arriving in September, I was quickly comforted by the boarding house’s welcoming and supportive atmosphere”, says Matous, IB1 Boarder.

The importance of personalised learning

Westbourne offers personalised catch-up programmes for every student, supporting them as they return to the classroom. They are not aware of any other schools offering this level of personalised learning support locally. Designed on a bespoke basis in conjunction with the student and their parent or guardian, these programmes exemplify Westbourne’s commitment to the importance of small classes, individualised learning and one-to-one attention from staff.

Accelerated learning to enhance the classroom learning experience

Westbourne is a strong advocate of accelerated learning, which entails applying the new skills and innovative teaching methods gained during lockdown to enhance learning in the physical classroom. The Century learning platform introduced earlier in the year is currently being used to elevate classroom teaching, for example. Using AI technology, it suggests mini-lessons that extend students’ knowledge, recognising their individual needs. With instant feedback and limitless

cross-curricular topics, it gives them more control over their learning. Dr Gerard Griffiths, Principal at Westbourne, says of the past year of education at Westbourne: “While lockdown has thrown challenges at us all, it has been a time of great advancement in online and remote learning. Students have been encouraged to approach learning in new ways and have developed different skills. By combining the very best of online study with face-to-face teaching, children can be more confident, independent learners.” 

ALCOHOL— FRIEND OR FOE? Influencer

Rosie Oretti

Penarth science-geek, purveyor of Tropic Skincare and Co-founder of Grounds For Good

I have a background in pharmacology, psychiatry and addictions spanning over 30 years. I love to consider all things to do with health and wellbeing, of both the mind and the body. I believe good lifestyle decisions are made when we have the right information.

As a nation, how have we coped with the ramifications of lockdown? Financial difficulties, limitations on our social lives, social isolation, bereavement, illhealth, health service disruption, uncertainty, and anxiety about the future. No wonder the conversation has turned to how much alcohol we are drinking.

People in the UK are drinking differently as a result of lockdown. There are two emerging trends. Around 33% have either reduced or stopped drinking, but these were individuals that were already drinking the least prior to COVID-19. This was more pronounced among the 18–34 year olds. However, around 21% of the population (a staggering 8.4 million adults) are drinking more frequently, with more units per session, than prior to COVID-19. Many of these were already regular drinkers, and lockdown has exacerbated this behaviour.

‘Effect of COVID-19 lockdown on alcohol consumption in patients with pre-existing alcohol use disorder’ by Jin Un Kim, Amir Majid, Rebekah Judge, Peter Crook, Rooshi Nathwani, Nowlan Selvapatt, et al.

50

www.penarthview.co.uk

Why does this matter?

Well, we all know that habits are formed quickly and can be hard to break. Drinking at a risky level (anything more than 14 units per week) increases the chances of immediate harms such as accidents, fires, arguments and aggression. Domestic violence is strongly associated with alcohol consumption and it’s estimated that 3.5 million adults are living in households where alcohol has increased tension in the household. Sustained risky drinking can develop into a dependency with all the associated myriad of social, physical and psychological harms. Although alcohol may seem like an immediate relief for mental health symptoms, in the longerterm mental health will deteriorate. This is particularly concerning during lockdown, when many of us already feel under stress. Harmful drinking also increases an individual’s susceptibility to COVID-19 infection and severity. The true impact of lockdown on the level of alcohol harms remains unknown but what we do know is that addiction services already feel under-resourced and ill-equipped to manage any increased demands. So, here’s to bold beginnings. We can ALL take action now to bring our drinking under control or seek out the help we need. By drinking at low risk levels and avoiding binge drinking we can reduce the impact of alcohol on the NHS, our emergency services and society as a whole.

FASHION RE-BOOT Influencer

Sylvie Pasquier Penarth-based Events Organiser

I was born in Troyes in the Champagne area of France. Fashion had always been a passion of mine, leading me to move to Paris to study Haute couture. I now live in the Vale of Glamorgan with my daughter and our little dog Lili, and run an Event Business which specialises in occasions with a certain “je ne sais quoi.”

When I talk to my friends about what they have missed the most during this pandemic, most of them said, seeing their family, socialising with friends, going away on holiday, and shopping! Since the onset of COVID-19, much of what we have relied on and took for granted over the years has been taken away from us. Lockdown has literally stripped everything down! As a result, many of us have been longing to invest in some new clothes, to celebrate, but mostly to draw a line under a series of unprecedented and sad events. More than an exchange of money, buying clothes is about sharing, comparing, feeling and trying on different styles. It is a social and satisfying experience which helps us reenforce our own style and personality. A little shopping therapy, which makes us feel good about ourselves! Fashion has literally been put on pause with shows being more or less nonexistent in the past year, leaving us without guidance or direction as to which style to adopt.

In a strange way, however, it has been rather liberating! With no one to tell us what to wear, it has taught us about what makes us happy in our outer skin. Giving us the freedom to choose the kind of clothes we enjoy wearing and feel comfortable in and embrace our own personal style without the underlying pressure and constraint of following a given trend! As we prepare for the high street to reopen, there is no doubt that things will look and feel very different. With the loss of so many well-loved brands, the shopping experience we all left behind a year ago will never feel quite the same. The pandemic has most definitely changed the way we shop forever. Conversely, it has also given the chance for new brands to emerge and shine. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, smaller, sustainable labels with environmental credentials are emerging to seize their moment. Above are some of my favourites for you to check out.

So put on your favourite outfit, make yourself look fabulous and get ready for re-entry! Salutations, Sylvie 

FERTILITY AND THE DIET Influencer

Angharad Evans Penarth-based Nutritional Therapist

I embraced the power of natural remedies after trying to manage a diagnosis of lupus and other auto immune conditions. Within three months I no longer needed my medication and have since overcome the condition completely. After retraining as an allergy and nutritional therapist, I specialise in detoxification and natural healing, and I have a clinic in the heart of Penarth where I offer a bespoke treatment to clients for a variety of illnesses.

Are you thinking of starting a family? Or are you struggling to conceive? Whilst many are familiar with common issues around fertility, have you considered the impact your diet can have on your fertility? Remember the old saying, ‘you are what you eat’, and this is particularly true when it comes to fertility. Here I will discuss some simple lifestyle changes that you can adopt, which will aid your journey to starting a family. These tips apply to men as well as women. Where to begin?

There are many steps couples can take to increase their chances of starting a family, and the first steps are through: • Detoxification, and • Intaking the correct nutrients.

54

If you’re planning on starting a family in the next few years then cleaning up your body is the best preparatory strategy. Our bodies’ detoxification abilities weren’t meant for the amount and array of toxins we’re exposed to these days. For this tailored approach, please contact me to discuss a programme that will work for you. If you’re at the stage where you’re ready to start a family, then being mindful of what you’re exposed to and what you’re consuming by means of food, drinks and skincare products is a must. The following should be avoided to enable your body to begin the natural process of detoxing: • trans-fats, • alcohol and caffeine, • synthetic chemicals, e.g. artificial sweeteners, drinking water from plastic bottles, • sprouted (green) potatoes, • raw eggs, poultry, seafood and sushi, and • pâté, soft cheese, blue cheese.

www.penarthview.co.uk

Other ways to ensure a clean diet is to: • drink filtered water, • avoid your intolerances and allergies, • lightly steam or roast your food when cooking, • use oils such as olive oil, butter, ghee and coconut oil for cooking, and cold pressed oils for drizzling, • eat plenty of clean and organic fruit and vegetables, • choose grass fed organic meats, and • eat oily wild caught fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines.

This is just some general guidance, if you’d like more tailored support, contact me today, and always check with your healthcare provider.

Take in the correct nutrients

Diet provides the basic nutrients needed for fertility. We don’t always receive all of the necessary nutrients from food, therefore it is imperative that we choose nutrients wisely. It’s worth noting too that being on the contraceptive pill can mean that women become deficient in key nutrients for fertility. Here are some of the nutrients that are recommended to support fertility:

Female • • • • • •

Folic acid and B vitamins Vitamins A, D and E Magnesium, zinc and iodine Essential fatty acids Omega 3, Omega 6 Antioxidants

Discover the power of natural remedies and aid your fertility journey. I am a fully qualified allergy & nutritional therapist based in the heart of Penarth where I offer tailored treatments in a professional, friendly and private environment. I offer a bespoke programme to help with fertility, focusing on detoxification, nutritional support, allergy and intolerances therapy, emotional support, and energy therapy. In addition, I offer a natural solution to various conditions such as IBS, CFS, PMS, anxiety, migraines, skin conditions, diabetes, perimenopause, weight loss, and many more. See the highlights of Wales, and make it special

Shân Eastwood, from Shân’s Wales Tours, has been working in partnership with the Retreats Group of luxury hotels on the St David’s peninsula to develop a range of specialist tours of the Pembrokeshire coast. As Wales leaves the current lockdown restrictions, Shân says there is an appetite to get out and about. She says: “with the current regulations permitting travel within Wales only, and with holidays abroad looking ever unlikely, use this as an opportunity to discover a Wales you didn’t expect to see. Wales is rugged, yet luxurious—with gorgeous market towns dotted all over, magnificent gardens such as those at Aberglasney, and plenty of beaches to die for.”

The Crêpe Escape’s new secret garden magically appears With all indoor hospitality having been closed since before Christmas, except for takeaway and delivery services, The Crêpe Escape on Glebe Street have been very busy. They have been creating a new secret garden, tucked away in a small outdoor yard at the rear of the café. Complete with bespoke furniture, magical fairy lights, and a special planting scheme that will also provide herbs for their menu, the secret garden will have space for around ten people, COVID-19 regulations permitting. It will be the perfect space for birthdays, baby showers, girlie get-togethers, or just to catch up with friends after being a long time apart. They’ll be serving their signature afternoon teas and grazing tables, as well as a full menu of savoury and sweet snacks and drinks. 61

IS COWORKING THE NEW NORMAL NOW? The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Creative Rural Communities team are launching a Coworking Month this May to celebrate and promote the use of coworking spaces in the county’s rural towns and communities.

Coworking Month 2021 will be launched with an online platform showcasing the type of spaces that people can work from, as well as offering a small grant to assist with the purchase of furniture or equipment to get spaces ready for coworking. Potential spaces include cafés or bars, churches, hotels, community centres, or existing business sites with unused space. The event is part of a larger project that hopes to gather and launch diverse spaces for people to work closer to home, reducing the need for residents living in rural areas to commute. THE 10 CASHFLOW COMMANDMENTS Given the turmoil of the past twelve months, the old adage “turnover is vanity, profit is sanity, cash is king” has never rung truer. Nothing closes a company quicker than a cash flow crisis, so here’s our top tips for sound money management.

Spell it out. Describe the product or service fully at the outset so the client understands, meaning less opportunity for any payment-delaying queries. A bird in the hand. If you’re in the service sector, ask for a percentage of the fee up front to give yourself some headroom; take the stance that you are ready to start, if your client is ready to pay! Split the difference. Consider splitting a large bill into a number of smaller invoices; a client with cash flow issues is more likely to perceive a large balance as a problem and therefore sit on it, whereas smaller more manageable amounts will be paid more quickly. Highlight terms. Confirm terms upon engagement but also reiterate them on your invoice so that the payment deadline is clear. Make clear any late payment action like interest and charges. Invoice promptly. After a project is completed, it’s all too easy to forget to invoice, but a customer has no obligation to pay until the invoice is received. Don’t bill once a week or once a month, but as soon as possible.

Credit…where it’s due? If you’re offering a period in which to pay, use the phrase “Payment due within x days” as opposed to “Net 30” so that there can be no ambiguity over the timeframe Make it easy. Give the customer a range of payment options, and make sure bank details are very visible; offer direct debits if it suits your business model so that clients pay upfront on a set day of the month, meaning you can plan to make your own outgoing payments The early bird. Yes, you want to be paid in full for work you have undertaken, but if it comes to the cash being in your pocket rather than the client’s, then you may want to offer a discount for payment within x days. Mind your manners. If the person paying the bill is not your immediate point of contact, then be sure to build a warm relationship with them too. Plus, research has shown that messages such as “thank you for your business” can increase the chances of your invoice being higher on the list of payables. If all else fails. If your customer simply won’t settle up, your next best option is the Government’s “Money Claim Online” (MCOL) portal which offers a low cost route to take those who owe sums up to £100,000 to court without engaging legal representation.  Lisa Entwistle is a partner at Evans Entwistle Chartered Management Accountants & Tax Advisors.
