Hello and welcome to the first ever edition of The Local! There is no doubt that we live in a very cool corner of the world with some of the friendliest people you could hope to meet and this new, quarterly magazine aims to celebrate that fact. We’ll be featuring local people, stories, food and events that we think you’ll want to know about from new restaurants and bars through to local services that you might not have known operate right on your doorstep. Having spent the past three years running Love Your Local Markets Hawthorne and Bulimba Festival where I’ve managed to combine my love of tasty, real food, live music and meeting so many locals, The Local seemed the obvious (and less weather dependant!) next step. I’d love to hear your stories so drop me a line or get in touch if you’ve got something to share with The Locals. See you around, Bec.

Play away childhood anxiety “Life has become extremely busy for families, which can directly impact on children’s stress and coping mechanisms.”

Childhood anxiety is on the increase and can be a major disruption for many Australian families. Mild anxiety is a normal part of child development however, an increasing number of children are finding that anxiety is becoming an overwhelming problem that can hugely impact their everyday life. Eliza Vassallo is the founder and manager of Child’s Play QLD, located in Morningside. “Life has become extremely busy for families, which can directly impact on their stress and coping mechanisms. As a result, we are seeing a huge increase in the number of children who are suffering from stress and anxiety. Whilst it is treatable, it is important that it is dealt with early in the child’s development, and by suitably qualified psychologists”.

Child’s Play Qld is a not-for-profit psychology practice that aims to ensure that children are supported throughout their childhood and young adulthood. Their mission is to remove the stigma of counseling and ensure family circumstances are not a barrier to children receiving the help they need. The team of seven psychologists assist children and young adults (aged 3 – 18) with a wide range of psychological issues. Parents can request an affordable ‘Parent Intake Session’ which gives them the opportunity to meet the psychologist and assess the best approach for their family. Medicare rebates and affordable payment options are also available at Child’s Play QLD.

The Good Beer Co is Australia’s first social enterprise beer company. Put simply, that means they work with craft brewers to brew and sell beer that raises money for a variety of different and worthy causes. Their first beer, Great Barrier Beer, is brewed by Queensland craft brewery Bargara Brewing Company and raises money for the Australian Marine Conservation Society and their work to protect the Great Barrier Reef. At least 50 percent of the profits from The Good Beer Co go directly to its charity partners. The Good Beer Co. was launched by Hawthorne local James Grugeon at The Triffid in Newstead in November 2015. Since then it has crowd-funded its first batch of Great Barrier Beer and is already brewing a second, following a great reception and orders from pubs, bars and bottle shops. As a former charity CEO, James says he knows how hard it is to generate funds for good causes and to raise the profile of important issues like protecting the reef. He’s working to secure long-term partnerships with big retailers and distributors that will make it easy for all Australians to have a good beer and do some good for society at the same time. With the Great Barrier Reef under serious threat from coral bleaching, climate change and, according to recent polling from James Cook University, over 89 percent of Australians saying they see the national icon as part of their identity, there couldn’t be a better time to have a cold one for the reef. Straight money talk “Robert has helped countless businesses large and small maximise their returns and ultimately flourish.”

Robert Bauman loves taxation. In fact, his two real passions in life are legally beating the taxman at his own complex game, and his famous BBQ ribs, the recipe of which remains a tightly held secret. Robert has spent over 25 years immersed in the details contained within the taxation code, both in Australia and his native USA. The best-selling author of Straight Money Talk and numerous related e-books, Robert has helped countless businesses large and small maximise their returns and ultimately flourish. Robert explains that the reason most of us dread tax time is simply because we don’t like to face the truth. “As humans, we’re notoriously good at avoiding the truth, whether it’s regarding physical health or financial health. However, once people are face-to-face with the realities of their business, it becomes a whole lot easier to set some achievable goals. From that point on, tax time can actually become something to celebrate.” As evidenced in his widely respected writing on the subject, Robert genuinely loves helping

businesses succeed, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises. One area of particular specialty is helping tradespeople navigate the challenges they face. “This firm has been in the area for a long time and advised many of the area’s tradespeople before, during, and after the housing boom. The fact that many of our tradies are still with us shows how well we understand their business. We know how sudden market changes affect small business and we can advise the best way to structure these.” Robert says, whether your business is building swimming pools, painting houses or designing jewellery, sitting down with an expert and taking a cold hard look at the previous financial year is the best way to move your business forward. Tax time just happens to be the perfect time to do it. If there is a way to legally beat the taxman, rest assured, Robert will find it. Helping your business succeed is a pleasure that he will celebrate, with some BBQ ribs, of course, dripping in his famously secret sauce.

Bulimba’s poster girl “So popular has her artwork become that you can now see it wrapped around our iconic City Cats on your commute along the Brisbane River.”

Debra Hood is proud to be Bulimba’s pin up girl - at least when it comes to her role in Bulimba Festival. When Debra put her hand up to get involved in 2015’s Bulimba Festival, it’s fair to say she didn’t anticipate the full scope of her subsequent level of engagement. Her trademark Brisbane inner-city landscapes, arranged with a little poetic license, epitomise Bulimba and were chosen to reflect the festival throughout the entire marketing campaign. So popular has her artwork become that you can now see it wrapped around our iconic City Cats on your commute along the Brisbane River. Debra runs an extremely busy studio producing work for clients but still manages to find time to support community projects such as the ‘Painting the Poles’ that support the fig trees in Memorial Park. Gravity Zone

4/15 Lamington St, New Farm

Shake it off “Gravity Zone has re-engineered the exercise process, removing the obstacles that hold us back from reaching our physical potential.” The aging process leads us to make one of two inevitable realisations - we either wish we had taken better care of ourselves or we are glad that we did. The impediments to leading a fit and healthy lifestyle are many and varied, but New Farm’s Gravity Zone has re-engineered the process, removing the obstacles that hold us back from reaching our physical potential, no matter what our age. Welcome to the modern workout. The first point to note about the Gravity Zone workout is the time it takes. Setting aside hours per week for exercise is simply not possible for most people so they have constructed a series of 20 minute workouts that equate to a 90 minute workout for the average gym user. The secret lies in the Whole Body Vibration (WBV) system. The use of a vibrating exercise platform strengthens your core muscles while normal

exercises like squats or lunges begin to burn in literally seconds. The benefits of WBV training are considerable. Obviously there is the time factor, but this type of training is technologically designed to offer the correct level of muscle stimulation and enhance general wellbeing, making it suitable for people of all ages, regardless of medical or physical condition. Benefits of three supervised sessions a week include increased flexibility, enhanced core strength and stability, greater muscle toning, improved collagen production bulimbabusiness.com.au

and blood circulation, increased bone density and improved balance and fall prevention. As well as this revolutionary exercise system, Gravity Zone is run by qualified staff who can provide nutritional advice to ensure your diet is not preventing you from achieving your health goals. Gravity Zone is a boutique health and fitness provider that does not feel like a standard sweaty gym. Call the team on 3358 6660 to receive two complimentary sessions, a full fitness assessment and metabolic classification all valued at over $200.

Classic Australian cinema With the recent launch of the Deluxe Cineplex in Hawthorne, we look back and celebrate some classic Australian films. MAD MAX: Released in 1979, Mad Max was a movie way ahead of its time. Set in a dystopian future, long before this genre became a grinding Hollywood staple, it featured some of the most spectacular real stunts ever to grace the silver screen. Computer-generated imagery was non-existent at the time, so when cars chased and crashed, real cars chased and crashed. Launching the careers of cinematic stars Mel Gibson and George Miller, Mad Max grossed over $100 million at the box office and was followed by no less than three sequels, including the massive 2015 hit Fury Road, with more episodes planned. Mad Max proved a massive boon to the Australian film industry, proving that local talent could produce international blockbusters on our own terms. The Local

13 PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK: Released in 1975, Picnic at Hanging Rock was a strange haunting tale that was both lauded and misunderstood in equal measure. The film tells the tale of a group of girls who mysteriously vanish in the Australian bush. American audiences, in particular, found the unresolved ending to be disconcerting, one potential distributor allegedly threw his coffee cup at the screen demanding to know what happened next. Nonetheless, the film was a great success, grossing over $5 million in local receipts, and propelling director Peter Weir closer to the successful international career that would follow. CROCODILE DUNDEE: Although not universally critically acclaimed, Crocodile Dundee, released in 1986, was nothing short of a box office sensation, earning close to $120 million for its fortunate financial backers. Starring another lovable Aussie larrikin with a wry sense of humour, this classic fish-outof-water tale took the world by storm and proved a catalyst for the local tourism industry. Who knows how many gullible American tourists saw the film and subsequently landed in Sydney airport expecting to be greeted by fearsome wildlife and beer swilling bushmen with giant knives strapped to their upper thighs? Although the jokes invariably wore thin, the film spawned two sequels that still did respectable business for Hoges and his production team. KENNY: Written, directed, funded and starring members of the Jacobson family, this understated mocumentary was a huge box office hit in 2006 grossing almost $8 million in local receipts. Starring lovable, salt-of-the-earth, larrikin plumber Kenny, an everyman with a heart of gold and a thousand toilet jokes. The film is essentially a study of class within what Australian’s have long prided themselves on - a classless society. Kenny battles prejudice, derision, family crisis and even encounters romance with classic deadpan humour to hilarious effect. Unlikely leading man Shane Jacobson has gone on to star in many other films and television productions but will forever remain Kenny, the port-a-loo plumber battling a stench that will outlast religion. bulimbabusiness.com.au

Bathroom renovation tips 1. Beware of asbestos. If you are considering a DIY bathroom and your home is pre 1990, make sure you test the wall, ceiling, tile underlay and vinyl for asbestos. Or better still, call in the experts to test it for you. 2. Waterproofing is absolutely critical. Waterproofing that isn’t up to scratch can lead to water damage and associated defects. Waterproofing and painting are not the same! Don’t risk a DIY to save a few hundred dollars. 4. Surfaces & tiles. Layers of contrasting colours, tones and textures create impact. Generally big tiles make a space appear larger and decorative, patterned and mosaic feature tiles bring your bathroom to life. Keep costs down by only tiling wet areas and painting other walls.

3. Good design is essential. Consider how you and your family use a room and how to best maximise functionality within. Keep costs down by working around existing plumbing when possible. You can never have too much storage so consider hooks and rails for easy accessibility, adding open shelving and concealing wall cabinets behind mirrors. Maximise natural light and choose lighting options carefully – go for warm rather than cool lighting. Use existing windows when possible and electrical ventilation units which draw steam up and into the ceiling cavity most units offer lighting, heating and ventilation. 5. Finishing touches & styling. Consider your personal style – is the property going to grow with The Local

Chasing the Olympic dream

“Don’t think about what could go wrong. Think about what could go right.” - Chelsea Jaensch, Australian Long Jumper Rio Olympics Qualifier 2016 They told her it couldn’t be done. At 27 and after more than seven years away from athletics, Chelsea Jaensch had a dream. That dream was to represent Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Leaving the comfort of her home in Adelaide and the security of her job as a radiographer, in 2013 Chelsea packed her bags to risk it all with a move north to sunny Queensland. When pressed further on why she set such a big and risky goal Chelsea said: “It is important to dream big ... why do any less? Dreaming big allows me to set a goal and do something I could be proud of.” But it hasn’t all been easy. As a self-funded athlete who was working and training full-time, there were plenty of tough times. “One of the hardest things when working towards your goal is self-doubt, but it is important to take the time to realign yourself with your goal and tell yourself what you are good at.” Peak Sports And Spine Centre founder,

chiropractor and physiotherapist Matthew Stewart recalls meeting Chelsea for the first time in 2013 when he decided to become her sponsor. “When Chelsea first arrived in Queensland she was a long way from jumping anything close to an Olympic qualifier. We decided to sponsor Chelsea because she represented everything we stand for, she dreamed big and then set goals along the way to work towards it. To us, it was her mindset that made her a winner, well before she qualified for Rio.” “Peak has given me the confidence that my body was not going to fall apart,” says Chelsea. Matthew puts this down to, “The use of a team approach utilising physiotherapy, chiropractic massage, and podiatry to get the best outcome for Chelsea. However, ultimately it is her dedication that has seen her get the best out of herself.” Peak adopts the ambitious mindset to dream big, just like Chelsea. You can follow her preparation for the Olympics at www.facebook.com/PeakSportsSC.

Sarmic Cafe

4/7 Apollo Rd, Bulimba

Jam packed with flavour

“The menu offers a range of breakfast, brunch and lunch options perfect for those who enjoy dining sumptuously during daylight hours.” Having spent three years perfecting their range of bottled relishes and preserves, Sarah Coorey and Michael Hoare took the next logical step on their food journey by opening their own cafe that specialises in all things brunch. Located on Apollo Road in Bulimba, Sarmic is a bright and inviting space that smells delicious. Recycled fire buckets make for lighting fixtures, sturdy wooden tables, and shelves stacked high with rows of bottled delights set the scene. The menu offers a range of breakfast, brunch and lunch options perfect for those who enjoy dining sumptuously during daylight hours. Calling upon over twenty-two years of hospitality experience, Michael has presented a list of dishes that venture beyond the standard cafe offerings. Buttermilk hotcakes topped with honey-baked nectarines and ricotta, perfectly poached eggs atop crisp potato

hash and finished with carrot jam, and crunchy cinnamon toast served with fresh figs and raspberry cream are some obvious crowd pleasers that will have you coming back a second and third time. Michael’s food philosophy is simple: combine the finest seasonal produce available with the couple’s in-house-made delights while eschewing passing fads and trends. Good, honest, quality, lovingly prepared meals are what you’ll always encounter at Sarmic Cafe. Coffee comes courtesy of Bare Bones Espresso, while a range of freshly-squeezed juices, smoothies and milkshakes cater for non-coffee drinkers (they are out there somewhere). Of course, it would be a crime not to take some of the bottled wonders home, the aforementioned carrot jam, eggplant and tomato kasundi, or a pistachio dukkah that is out of this world. So drop past Sarmic and indulge yourself.

Sugo Mi Pizzeria

3/190 Oxford St, Bulimba

“The beauty of a good pizza lies in the base and Sugo Mi produce a wondrously light and crispy wood-fired base.”

Crowd pleasing pizzeria Pizza is often dismissed as fast food or considered a fallback for those terribly busy days when cooking seems like too much of a chore. Many of us resort to “family friendly” pizza restaurants so the kids can run amok and we parents avoid dishes duty for the night. The incredibly popular Sugo Mi Pizzeria on Oxford Street in Bulimba bucks this trend, kids or no kids. The beauty of a good pizza lies in the base and Sugo Mi produces a wondrously light and crispy wood-fired pizza that sets it apart. Toppings follow true Ital-

ian-style and are sparingly used but all of excellent quality and flavour. Fresh herbs are liberally added and their famous ‘sugo sauce’ is generous without overpowering the subtle traditional Italian toppings. Sugo’s menu is seasonally updated and for those non-pizza lovers, other staples include hand rolled gnocchi, a tempting selection of pastas and don’t forget their gelateria next door. Kids are welcomed and Sugo Mi’s ‘bambini’ menu pairs mini main courses with drinks, dessert and for everyone’s sanity, bulimbabusiness.com.au

a healthy supply of colouring-in books, pens and pencils. For those dining sans-children, you’ll be happy to know that as the evening progresses, so does the clientele. The later crowd presents a mix of date-nighters, middle aged couples, pasta and chianti sharing book club members, and pretty much everyone in between. Oh, and the best part? You can buy Sugo Mi’s pizza bases from their deli shop, alongside the restaurant. What better way to get the kids to cook, but with a guaranteed edible outcome?

“Think pan fried veal with sautéed mushrooms in white sauce, risotto marinara with prawns and scallops” DOUBLE SHOT RIVERBEND CAFE Renowned for its modern Asian-inspired cuisine Double Shot Riverbend is one of the many dining options available on Bulimba’s Oxford Street strip. The cafe’s deck is the place to be when the sun is shining, presenting a view that compliments whatever you fancy from the menu, be it all day breakfasts, fresh and tasty salads, or coffee and cake. Rest assured that a cafe named Double Shot takes its coffee very seriously, and caffeine enthusiasts will not be disappointed.

FRENCH TWIST True artisan French baking in Bulimba. Nestled off the beaten track on Corio Street, French Twist is well worth seeking out if you enjoy classic European baking at its very peak. Baguettes, sourdoughs, croissants, pastries, cakes, tarts and other desserts - lovers of kneaded dough will be beside themselves upon seeing the extensive range of treats presented at French Twist.

SOUTHSIDE TEA ROOM It is evident from its quirky mix of eclectic furnishings and fittings that Morningside’s Southside Tea Room is something very different to the standard Brisbane cafe. ‘Old school’ is a term that best describes this hidden gem. The menu is a trip through some well-worn pages of the CWA cookbook, and it’s clear that everything offered is the authentic article. The food and drinks are fantastic and can be leisurely enjoyed over a board game. What more could you hope for? bulimbabusiness.com.au

Up your kerb appeal “Autumn and Winter are some of our best planting months in Queensland.” We all know that first impressions count and having a well maintained garden is an easy and relatively affordable way to increase the value of your house. Even if you’re not looking to sell, get house proud by mowing the lawn, trimming hedges and building and caring for garden beds. Autumn and Winter are some of our best planting months in Queensland with lower heat, less humidity and fewer pesky pests and diseases to kill our precious greenery. Try planting lettuce, spinach, cabbage, squash, tomato and root vegetables such as carrots and onions.

Herbs are the easiest edible plants to grow year ‘round so if your green thumb isn’t quite green enough yet, basil, parsley, rosemary and thyme are probably your safest bets. Winter is also the best time to grow the elusive coriander, which bolts during the warmer months. Fertilise your garden regularly, especially pot plants as they have no depth of soil to draw nutrients from. The easiest method is to add liquid organic fertiliser to your watering can and make the rounds every other week in Summer and once a month during Winter. Adding mulch to

garden beds will also keep your plants warm and cosy during those cooler nights. As the sun is a lot less intense during Winter, make sure you don’t over water plants. Garden beds should drain well, and when possible, don’t use saucers under pot plants – no one likes wet feet, plants included! Many perennial flowers survive our Brisbane climate well and bloom all year round. They are also quite foolproof and with a good amount of sun, are easy to care for and will hopefully lure bees and other friendly visitors to your garden.

McGrath Estate Agents

170 Riding Rd, Balmoral

Bulimba born & bred Paul Shelton, local real estate agent at McGrath Estate Agents, was born and bred in Malcolm St, Hawthorne where his parents still live today. He is one of 4 boys who all still live in and around the area. Growing up, he participated in just about every local sport from rugby league, swimming, baseball, cricket and more prominently AFL which he retired from at Morningside AFC in 2014. Paul went to primary school at Sts Peter & Paul’s, where his mother still works after 30 odd years in the office and his wife is a teacher. He has 2 sons and one now goes to Day Care in Norman Park.

“Morningside AFC has many memories for me as I played football there from the age of 4 and am honored to have played in 3 senior premierships.”

What makes this part of Brisbane so special? It’s friendly and happy and there are plenty of parks, sporting grounds and playgrounds for kids. You always see people running, walking and exercising and the growing trend of cafes, bars and restaurants adds to the village atmosphere. Where would we find you on a Friday night? I work as a Real Estate Agent so Saturdays are one of the busiest days. Most Friday nights I’m at home with the family watching the footy otherwise I’ll try to sneak out to Oxford St for dinner. Recently I’ve been taking the kids to the Farmers Market in Hawthorne. What are some of your favourite secret places in the area? Morningside AFC has many memories for me as I played football there from the age of 4 bulimbabusiness.com.au

and am honored to have played in 3 senior premierships, so to have a quiet beer at the bar there is certainly a favorite past time. Having a young family means that any chance to frequent bars and restaurants on Oxford Street is exciting. The most secret of places would have to be the back BBQ entertaining area at my parent’s house in Malcolm St, Hawthorne. They have a huge TV to watch whatever sport you desire and plenty of food and drinks around the pool. What is something not many people know about you? My parents had the grounds keeping and cleaning contract as a second job at the Sts Peter & Paul’s school and parish when I was a kid. I started pushing a lawn mower when I went to school, along with my 3 brothers. I am very handy with a lawn mower.

Milo and Macy Shoes

“Sam is extremely selective in the footwear that she stocks, traveling far and wide to source new products at independent trade shows.”

Best foot forward Started in her family home when Sam Emanuel’s youngest offspring hit schooling age, Milo and Macy Shoes is a truly unique retail experience. Sam had long been passionate about shoes and as time allowed, was determined to pursue a venture that catered for other similarly inclined shoe loving females. Coupling this passion with a flair for entrepreneurship, Milo and Macy Shoes soon became a thriving reality. The crowning difference that sets Milo and Macy apart is exclusivity. Sam is extremely selective in the footwear that she stocks, traveling far and wide to source new products at independent trade shows. She works with labels to carefully select fabrics and cuts, creating her own unique and exclusive product line. One pair per size is ordered, so ladies can be sure

that they are receiving a truly limited edition. Adding to this story of hands-on exclusivity, Sam selects boutique brands that are not widely retailed across the country. Since opening its doors in September of 2015, Milo and Macy has quickly gained a cult following courtesy of word-of-mouth and social media referrals. Make your own mojito The days are getting shorter, the nights cooler and we want nothing more than to curl up on the couch with a good book and a great drink. Mojitos have been a summer favourite this year and, not wanting to let a good thing go, we started experimenting with more wintery versions. Blueberries are a delicious fruit, full of antioxidants, low in sugar and a great companion for our wintery mojitos. Use fresh if possible although frozen berries will also work. The Local

• 1 cup of blueberries, fresh or frozen • 1 tbs raw sugar • 1 lime juiced • 2 shots of white rum • Soda water Blend the blueberries until smooth. Spoon sugar into your cocktail shaker, or a bottle with a lid, add lime juice, blueberry puree, rum and shake vigourously. Add ice to 2 glasses, fill with 1/3 soda water and pour your blueberry mix over these. Try adding mint, for a fresh twist.
