Letters to the Editor
Loud Mouth Voices from our readers To the Editor: Re “Don’t Dress Your Age,” by Julia Baird (Sunday Review, Oct. 23):
My jeans, leggings and high heels look just right. In another era, Queen Victoria and I would have been great friends.
I chuckled a couple of times while reading this article, because I was reminded of someone: myself.
SHIRLEE SLOYER LAWRENCE, N.Y.
When I was 13, I started to don blazers and pearls just as easily as my classmates donned windbreakers and college sweatshirts. I’ve been taken for a teacher at my high school many times and have even shown up to school wearing the same outfit as one of my teachers. My idea of fashion is what I define as business casual: a lace dress (business) paired with a baseball cap for my favorite collegiate team (casual). I have been subject to criticism about my outfits, told that I look “weird” with the attire I choose and that I should enjoy the sweats while I can. It is difficult to shrug these comments off at first, but I am glad to say that, while the remarks don’t necessarily disappear, they become more and more insignificant.
To the Editor: Re “Yoga Pants Are Bad for Women” (Sunday Review, Feb. 18): Despite not wanting to be judged for her choice to wear sweatpants, Honor Jones criticizes women she doesn’t know over their decisions. A woman’s specific reasons for what she chooses to wear do not matter. She is dressing for herself, not others. Ms. Jones ties her criticism of yoga pants to an indictment of other women’s lifestyles as a whole. She dislikes exercise classes, athleisure and Fitbits because they make it easier and more enjoyable for women to incorporate exercise into their daily lives.
Strut your stuff in whatever makes you happy, whether it’s vintage at 36, as Ms. Baird once wished for, or business at 17.
In all likelihood, like Ms. Jones, the women she is observing just want to work out in peace. Exercise can be a nerve-racking experience. Women should not be criticized for increasing their fitness in a way they feel comfortable, like increasing the number of steps they take throughout the day, trying out a spin class or wearing yoga or sweatpants.
IDIL TUYSUZOGLU DEMAREST, N.J.
They should be supported or at the very least left alone.
To the Editor:
MICHAELA HYAMS, BROOKLYN
Brava, Julia Baird. I am a great-grandma in my late 80s, not tall but with a girlish figure. No mutton am I! 6 | Lipper
To the Editor: Honor Jones is so right. Wearing yoga pants is something men have convinced women
that they should do. Breast-baring, low-cut blouses, barely-there thongs worn with lowrise jeans, belly shirts, bare legs with short skirts and flip-flops, and no socks all winter so as to look sexy. Related to this is the idea that female athletes should wear skimpy clothing. It’s got nothing to do with sports or empowerment! VIOLET K. BERNSTEIN WEEHAWKEN, N.J. To the Editor: As a woman who has been exercising for 25 years, I think that dressing the part is motivating and part of the fun. And if a cute outfit gets more women to the gym or class, who cares? I happen to like the way I can see my muscles move in yoga pants; it makes me work harder. Honor Jones’s essay is just another example of telling women how to look, how to feel and what their priorities should be. JOANNE DAUS DIMEFF, DALLAS

2018 Makeup Trends The 5 Makeup Trends That You’re About to See Everywhere by Chloe Hall
I
n 2017, we said goodbye to the Instagram eyebrow, highlighter that can direct airport traffic, and the harsh contouring that flooded our feeds for the last 365 days. Now it's all about the future of beauty and what 2018 holds. We asked celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta, who works with Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid, Camila Cabello, to predict the five biggest beauty trends for the new year. Spoiler: Lip gloss is back and it's poppin'. (It's poppin'.)
Purple Rain
Ultra Violet is the color of the year according to Pantone, and Ta also predicts it will be huge for 2018. “Be prepared to see a boom of violet everywhere,” says Ta. “Especially pretty on eye’s inner corners.” If you’re not convinced, let Rihanna’s impact convince you to invest in a few purple products. Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman credits Rihanna in part for this year’s color choice and thinks the singer and beauty mogul embodies violet. “When you think of this color, she perfectly sums up the originality, the inventiveness, the forward thinking, the nonconformity,” explains Pressman. Channel your inner Rihanna and reach for a few purple Fenty products.
Less Is More
Pop of Color
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Brights are going to be big in 2018. “Color is back instead of all neutral monochromatic, but used in a clean way, not the over-the-top ‘80s way,” says Ta. This is the year to experiment with bright eyeshadow palettes and crazy lips colors you’ve never thought to try.
Get Your Shine On
Head to the OC and let Marissa Cooper and Summer Roberts know lip gloss is back. Ta says lip gloss makes your lips glimmer, “giving your face youthful radiance.” Bonus, lip gloss and shimmery effect goes well with the natural, dewy look you’re already looking for in 2018. Plus, we’ll take any excuse to play Lil Mama’s smash hit again.
Skin is in. It’s time to put down the contour kits, brushes, sticks, and wands and go for a more natural look. “Go for less makeup and more skin, rather than the over-contoured look,” urges Ta. Tinted moisturizers are a great place to start.
Glow up
“A healthy glow finish on skin is in instead of matte caked or powdery finish,” says Ta. A great way to kick off 2018 is to invest in your skin. Treat yourself to more masks in 2018. “Take care of that skin!” Ta says. Lipper | 7

Christina’s Lip Adventure Interview with A Makeup Lover, Christina by Pengxin Guo 12 | Lipper
“I have way too many lipsticks but I won’t stop buying them. Though lipsticks can not solve all problems, they can solve my problems. I like the quote from Gwyneth Paltrow, ‘Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kickass red lipstick’ . Beauty to me is wearing the makeup I love everyday. I love makeups. They are the happiness.” —Christina Zhao

Interview
Pengxin Guo: When did you start doing makeup? Christina Zhao: I didn’t start very early. Probably the second year of my high school, I began to follow the fashion and got in touch with makeups. PG: How many lipsticks do you have right now? CZ: I have a lot. Right now, I have 66 in my home. I gave away bunch of them to my friends. I also threw some of them away because they are neither good nor my style. PG: Can you still remember the first lipstick you purchase? CZ: I think it was from YSL. I went to the sephora with my friend and YSL was the only brand that I was familiar with. I think I bought the most popular shades, but I can’t remember exacly. And it’s kind of expensive ($37) because it is high end. PG: What’s your favorite high end makeup brand? CZ: Tom Ford. They have beautiful lipsticks, eyeshadows and other good stuff. PG: Which one is your favorite high end lipstick? Still From Tom Ford? CZ: Yes. It’s the Lips and Boys collection called LEONARDO. It’s a beautiful shade and it not dry at all. PG: What’s your favorite drug store brand? CZ: Oh, many. I like NYX, Revlon and Wet N Wild. They are cheap but good. Even better than some high end brands. PG: Which one is your favorate drug store lipstick? CZ: I’ll say it’s the NXY Soft Matte Lip Cream in shade 08 SAO PAULO. A plummy pink color. And it’s only $6.5. PG: Which lipstick is your all time favorite or do you wear most often recently? CZ: I don’t have a all time favorite because my taste is always changing but I love Jill Stuart 20 Promise Me recently. The packaging is really beautiful and I love plum red recently. I recently bought the LIP MAGNET LIQUID LIPSTICK 506 from Giogio Amani so I wear it very often, too.

* A young lady is applying lipstick from camillestyles.com
PG: If you are going to school, which lipstick will you wear? CZ: It’s Jill Stuart 21 Warm Love, a light shade of red, just for the school. Sometimes, I don’t have time to do the whole makeup so I will only apply lipstick. Warm Love is the right color to wear when you have no makeup. PG: Which lipstick will you pick for a date? CZ: Dior 976. Long lasting and beautiful. PG: Pick one for a interview. CZ: That’s a trick one. I think the Jill Stuart 2o and 21 I mentioned before are good. They are not bright red. You can wear it if you don’t want to have the whole makeup. PG: Have you heard the #Ride OR Die? Which one is your #Ride OR Die? CZ: La Mer lip balm. I will die if I don;t have it because my lips are dry. I think good lips fit into good lipsticks. La Mer lip balm makes your lips soft and smooth.
506 from Giogio Amani. I bought it couple weeks ago. I love it. PG: Do you have anything that you want to buy next? CZ: Yes. Kiko just realsed a collection during Valentine’s Day with cute heart shape. They are super cute and I think they are sale right now of $6.99. PG: What does makeup or beauty mean to you? CZ: I have way too many lipsticks but I won’t stop buying them. Though lipsticks cannot solve all problems, they can solve my problems. I like the quote from Gwyneth Paltrow, “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick”. Beauty to me is wearing the makeup I love everyday. I love makeups. They are the happiness. I think there is nothing wrong to buy things that can make you happy if you have enough money.
PG: Pick one for the #MLBB (My Lips But Better). CZ: YSL Rouge Pur Couture 09. #MLBB is a really popular topic but I am not really into that color. PG: What are the most regret ones? CZ: I gave away or threw away most of them. I still have some with me. There are a lot. Guerlain Kisskiss 344, Burberry 73, Anna Sui 601 and the Miley Cyrus shade from M.A.C. They are all bright orange which I used to love but right now, they are not right me. They are not my style any more. PG: What about the most expensive you have purchased? CZ: Guerlain 41 Gipsy is $54 and all Tom Ford regular collection are $54. Guerlain is limited edtion. It’s just for my collection. PG: What about the cheapest you have purchased? CZ: Wet N Wild has lipsticks around $4 or $5 which are super cheap. NYX also have some cheap lipstick and both of them are in good quality. You just need to choose your colors. PG: Which is the last lipstick that you purchased? CZ: The LIP MAGNET LIQUID LIPSTICK
