A PASSION FOR RENOIR: STERLING AND FRANCINE CLARK ART INSTITUTE COLLECTION For the first time ever, the art gallery presents a monographic exhibit about this French maestro. Over thirty works from the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute make up this exhibition covering all the genres cultivated by this artist: portrait, female figure, nudes, landscapes, still life and flowers. This exhibit at the Museo del Prado tells us two stories. First, there is the story of Renoir. Just as the title of the exhibition states, it is an artistic review that allows us to appreciate the extent of the painter's proposals, while giving special 4 o n renew

attention to his most important period, between 1874 and 1900. A selection that you'll be able to see at the Prado as the first monographic exhibition of this French impressionist. Secondly, there is the story behind the collection's origin. The works come from the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute where they were brought together by the creator of the Institute, the United States collector Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956). After serving as a soldier in the USA, Robert Sterling Clark, heir to the creators of Singer, went

to Paris to live in 1910. His interest in art and his fortune, shared with his wife Francine, developed into a huge art collection including paintings, silver works, sculpture, porcelain, drawings and engravings, Starting in 1920, his main acquisitions were French paintings of the last part of the 19th century and today they are the heart of the collection. From this rich heritage, there are 31 pieces of Renoir on display, in which all the genres that he cultivated are present: portrait, feminine figure, nudes, landscapes, still life and flower.

oncover New Sustainbility Department

EDPR Creates the Sustainability Department As part of the EDP Group, and one of the main pillars of its sustainability strategy, the challenge now is to transmit this idea both internally to the company and to the rest of society

S

imply speaking about renewable energy evokes the idea of sustainability. That is a key pillar for any clean, green company like EDP Renováveis, which is currently focusing its line of work on that concept. However, being green does not necessarily imply being sustainable. Sustainability is much more than the environment; it is social, economic and ethical responsibility. It involves ensuring that the daily activity of a leading company such as EDP Renováveis reflects the principle of social responsibility. Leaving behind a positive legacy requires defining a strategy and that is precisely what keeps the people responsible for sustainability at EDPR immersed in a constant flow of information. The company faces no small challenge. However, EDP Group is already a worldwide leader in the sector and has shown to be up to this challenge. On September 10, 2010, EDP was named as the leader among Utilities on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. This is a historic event, as

it is the first Portuguese company to reach the top of this sustainability index. Being EDPR part of EDP Group, and one of the main pillars of its sustainability strategy, the challenge now is to transmit this idea both internally to the company and to the rest of society. The responsibility to bring sustainability to the forefront in all sectors and departments of the company is shared by everyone. The first step was taken in late 2009, when an analysis was conducted of the different areas of sustainability at EDPR. An action plan was then created, including a series of initiatives that sought to improve EDPR’s performance in terms of sustainability by the year 2011. João Paulo Mateus was appointed to help with the implementation and coordination of this plan of action and to work with the entire company on the guidelines, new ideas and sustainable vision for the company. One of the first challenges was the creation of an annual sustainability report during the first quarter of 2010. This work, although coordinat-

ed by the Sustainability Department, involved many people in the organization in an effort that was rewarded with an A+ rating in terms of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting rules (box 2). A key pillar involves joining forces and grouping assets together, as is the case with the sustainability initiative. Santiago Gregorio, Director of Sustainability for Europe, has supported this initiative at EDPR. It is essential to create a common thread that involves all the countries where the company is present. The work that is being done requires an enormous coordination capacity. The fact that EDPR is present in 11 countries and that the company employs people from 25 different nationalities is an indication of the complexity faced to clear up any questions and establish a guideline for sustainability issues. However, the sustainability challenge is a global challenge that entails involvement by the entire company and the society around it. This society includes city and town councils, employv

ees, suppliers or clients and landowners that host EDP Renováveis wind farms all over the world. All of them must feel that they are part of this great project. The goal is to have people from each department in all the countries where EDP Renováveis is present who are key to the company’s sustainability. Their job is to observe, evaluate and report information to improve sustainability and to maintain all the achievements made so far. It is said that every journey begins with a single step, and one of the company’s main journeys has certainly always involved the environment. This concern is reflected in all business phases, from promotion to operation of the wind farms. It can also be seen in the implementation of the Environmental Management System, which seeks to implement rules and best practices for the environment focused on protecting natural resources, minimizing waste and constantly improving environmental performance. As an example, Europe is heading toward ISO 14001 certification of wind farms, with 30 wind farms, a total of 650 MW, scheduled for certification by the end of 2010. During the construction of a wind farm, EDP Renováveis offers an additional long-term benefit to local communities, especially in terms of investment and infrastructures. Examples include; improving public and private roads, tax revenue and job creation, which are important when a wind farm is awarded. BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity is also an area in which EDPR has focused its attention with various projects in Europe and the United States which involve monitoring species and wind farm impact. The company has also promoted and fostered a number of projects for improving habitats, and it has conducted exhaustive field studies on various species of animals and plants. The following major projects were carried out in 2009: • a campaign to rescue and improve the situation of the Montagu’s Harrier in Albacete, Spain; • the adaptation of an electrical cable that mitigates high mortality rate for birds; • installation of fire prevention platforms in Catalonia, Spain; In the United States, the Environmental Affairs Department is responsible for establishing and executing the environmental policies, standards and best management practices of the company throughout all life cycle stages of a project in order to minimize environmental impacts during project development, construction, operations, and decommissioning. Because sustainability involves thinking about the future, maintaining the present and preserving what is to come, EDPR wants young people to take an interest in green energy are some of the biodiversity projects that the Team is involved in: • three-year commitment to support Operation Migration and participate in the plan for conserving the habitat of the endangered whooping crane (USA); • lead in the creation of a collaboration initiative and research into the possible impacts of

wind projects on the sage grouse population (USA); and • mitigation of wetlands: first year of monitoring of a wetland created during the construction of the Elkhorn Valley Wind Farm and fourth year of monitoring of wetlands created at the Maple Ridge Wind Farm (USA). These are a few examples of EDPR's sustainability initiatives. Other examples involve agreements with NGOs, such as the Down Syndrome Foundation of Madrid that enables the young people who participate in the workshops and classes to visit EDPR on a field trip. Because sustainability involves thinking about the future, maintaining the present and preserving what is to come, EDPR wants young people to take an interest in green energy.

offers put EDP Renováveis at the top of this list. That way, the social responsibility, the image transmitted of a sustainable company, creates added value that helps society see the multinational as a leading company that triumphs in every way. According to the latest data, there are more and more investors interested in the company’s social responsibility, and they want to know more about policies and practices involving social, ethical and environmental issues. This reaffirms the idea that sustainability is also a very important aspect for Investors that requires credibility and efficiency, i.e. cost reduction. In addition, sustainability is a cornerstone of EDPR business, as it is based on a growing

business opportunity derived from the need to produce energy using renewable and clean sources. IMPLEMENTATION That is why, in terms of renewable energy, we are working to ensure that not only EDPR is perceived as being socially responsible, but rather all of the EDP Group can promote the great sustainability results. Society requires visible, honest actions. It is so important to analyze the perception of people who have a relationship with the company: suppliers, employees, the public, analysts or investors. Absolutely everyone expects a sustainability policy from the company. They want the company to communicate its initiatives, objectives and rev

SEEKING OUT ADDED VALUE The goal for EDPR is not to be sustainable because of who it is, but because of what it does. That is why communication is key, adding value through the gradual creation of a reputation, something that we all know is key for companies in every way. Currently, according to a study by the Reputation Institute published in Portuguese business newspaper Jornal de Negócios, EDP Renováveis is the Company with the highest reputation index: 71.58%. This study was conducted at the start of last year, with 600 consumers answering questions on the companies of the Portuguese stock market's PSI 20 Index. sults outwardly. The Sustainability Department works to answer that challenge, ensuring that the quality and trust in the sustainability information is the same as with the company’s financial information. Accordingly, the Sustainability Department is coordinating the implementation of the Sustainability Information System (SIS). This corporate tool will enable better control of the sustainability information that will be reported to the company’s management team and to the different stakeholders, clarifying concepts, indicators, and reporting processes. The sustainability challenge is not simple… what we are trying to do with the recent creation of the department is to create an engine that will drive policy and lay out the path to meet the annual challenges.

INTERNAL COMMUNICATION Internal communication is crucial to sharing the strategy, objectives and initiatives with everyone involved. It is also a way of promoting employee satisfaction and information regarding the company’s best practices. To ensure sustainable, clear and steady corporate governance, it is important to work from the inside first. Since the creation of the EDP Renováveis Sustainability Department, ideas have been brought together, and initiatives or improvements have been discussed and analyzed, using the channels that EDPR is fortunate to have, such as its magazine, intranet or internal television to promote the idea and procedures to follow. All of this helps with the execution of the

A+ level in the GRI

Action Plan, which is two-tiered: defining the objectives and initiatives, and reporting the results. EDPR has defined a series of measures and an ambitious plan for the coming years in view of ranking among the best companies in the world in terms of sustainability. Its goal is to achieve a result of 75% in 2010 and 80% in 2011 on the Sustainability Index. It is definitely a new department that is growing and, most of all, it is very necessary. Any active renewable energy company and any investor who is interested in it must see and transmit an image of sustainability in order to reap both financial and personal benefits. That is why it is essential that everyone be involved and therein lies the future of EDPR.

Kevin Ku · FINANCIAL ASSOCIATE, EDPR NORTH AMERICA

Kevin Ku joined EDPR North America, then Horizon Wind Energy, in 2008 in the Houston, TX office. As a Financial Associate, Kevin raises capital for wind farm development and construction. Generally, this has come in the form of tax equity where EDPR NA sells tax benefits to institutional investors. However, EDPR NA is beginning to explore other financing structures and may expand into new areas in the future. Kevin’s role at EDPR NA requires a combination of technical and commercial skills. In order to succeed at his job, Kevin must understand complex financing structures and the economic implications for the company but at the same time, communicate well and negotiate with potential investors. Kevin loves dealing with the diverse components of his position because it’s always interesting. “One day I can be staring at a spreadsheet trying to understand complex tax rules, another day I can be poring over legal documents, and the next day have long discussions with investment banks and law firms,” said Kevin. “It’s never boring because every day is different.” One of Kevin’s favorite things about working for EDPR NA is its flat organizational structure. “Here, employee relationships tend to be more familial and informal than bureaucratic,” said Kevin. “The result is that nobody carries an ego, ideas are accepted from all parts of the company, people naturally tend to work harder, and things get done in an efficient manner.” In his free time, Kevin is an avid photographer. Over the past 10 years, he has built up quite a collection of old film cameras and photography books. “Don’t be surprised if you see me walking around town with a backpack and Rolleiflex camera in my hand,” said Kevin.

The effort and dedication of our employees allow us to excel as a group. In each issue, we highlight employees who have demonstrated diligence in their work at EDPR

Domenico Marinelli became part of EDP Renováveis two years ago. He is in charge of the Development Department in Italy, headquartered in Naples. Specifically, his day-to-day routine involves seeking new opportunities for developing renewable energies in the Italian market. His background includes other work in international development. He has worked in the United Kingdom, Turkey and Italy, and for eight years was in charge of developing a wind farm with Gamesa Energía. He asserts that “everything he knows he learned during his time in the field.” What differentiates in his development position, his ability to convey his two years of experience with EDPR to the new Italian team. Domenico enjoys meeting new people and he believes that everyone has something to teach him, helping him to grow both personally and professionally. His work requires constant travel, which he says “encourages interaction with all types of people, but also requires an ability to adapt to different cultures, food and places. The spirit of adaptation brought by this job is very useful in life.” Domenico believes that, "Working at EDPR is a truly positive experience because of its vision of progressive thought, and because the company really does have the best team on the market”. He says that “dealing with Italian bureaucracy and with unfair competition on a daily basis is hard. Working like this every day is indeed a challenge. To endure all of this, you must believe in your work. Wind power is a good, clean and feasible way of producing energy. To believe in it and work accordingly, are people who are an inspiration.” He recalls two special moments over these last two years: receiving the 2010 “Work Merit Award,” and the time when his first wind farm began production. However, at the end of the work day, he is a diehard traveler: “I love traveling with my wife, and playing soccer with a local team. I love food and wine and publish a restaurant page with two friends. But for the last eight months, nearly all of my free time has been taken up by my wonderful little baby boy.” He considers himself a fighter, and when he sets his sights on a goal, he “goes for it.”

Joaquín García Boto has been the director of the Promotion Department in Spain for three years. His job is to coordinate a 21-member team responsible for developing new farms. Joaquín is tasked with being on alert for any new tender opportunities in the Autonomous Communities, and therefore launching a number of projects, often in record time. His work has paid off, resulting in 220 megawatts (MW) acquired by EDP Renováveis in Cantabria, in the Campoó zone, considered the best for the installation of wind farms. Joaquín’s efforts are currently focused on two challenges: Galicia and Catalonia. - Galicia: In July, the Promotion Department submitted documentation to to be awarded part of the 2,300 MW

put up for tender by this community. The result should be released by the end of the year. EDP Chairman António Mexia is also involved in the tender process, and has traveled several times to the Galician community to promote this major wind project. - Catalonia: EDPR is aggressively pursuing part of the region’s 769 MW making part of the tender. At this time, however, the company is the community’s leading wind operator. There are other goals in his sights: Aragon, Castile-La Mancha and Andalusia. For now, however, the challenge is to maintain market share, obtaining more than 800 MWin output capacity in Spain.

s part of EDPR’s continued commitment to foster cross culture integration of human resources, SAP Technician Jaime Sabán Chaves was offered an opportunity to spend two years at the Corporate Headquarters of EDPR North America. Moving to Houston, Texas, the 4th largest city in the United States, can be exciting and yet a bit daunting, but after a sleepless night and with the support of his family and girlfriend, Jaime agreed to take the assignment. “Cross-platform transfers benefit the company by sharing experiences from both platforms,” said Jaime. “Each platform has the opportunity to learn best practices from these transfers.” Jaime will bring over five years of extensive experience working with SAP. In addition, his knowledge of the EDPR business model will play an important role in implementing SAP in the North American platform which began in January of 2010. His position will help facilitate communication between the SAP maintenance team and its end business users to achieve the best possible outcome from the system. Gaining end user support and buy-in will prove to be the most challenging part of his new role. “I try to understand the problems the users are facing and find solutions that work for them,” said Jaime. The most rewarding part of his time in the U.S. has been meeting people from all of the departments and learning about their job which enables him to gain a better understanding of the Company.

“Each day is exciting!” Moving from Spain to Houston, Texas, can be very exciting. It was the case for Jaime. He says the most rewarding part of his time in the U.S. has been meeting people from all of the departments and learning about their job While the official transfer is expected to take place later this year, Jaime has been spending some time in the United States in an observation role. So far, he has enjoyed his experience. Jaime is already acclimating to American traditions such as earlier meal times and the fast paced lifestyle. He is warmed by the American hospitality and he is discovering all of the things the NA platform and Houston have to offer. “I can´t chose one thing that is my favorite so far,” said Jaime. “I feel like a baby discovering new things and new experiences. Each day is exciting!” Jaime is impressed by the Houston skyline, the EDPR NA downtown office and he is even enjoying the humid Houston weather. Although visiting Houston has been an amazing experience for Jaime, he still misses his family, friends and his favorite hobby Padel - which he describes, “is like tennis in a cage.”

PROCUREMENT REORGANIZATIO N The EDPR NA Procurement Department has recently undergone an invigorating reorganization that now includes responsibility for turbine supply. Moving from Construction Project Management, Carole Engelder currently leads professionals in purchasing materials, services, indirects as well as managing the recently

signed turbine supply frame agreement. Contributing to the department’s energy, are direct links with EDPR Madrid, including Federico Toro, Procurement Manager of Materials and Services, on assignment in Houston. The Procurement team is implementing many new processes for value creation and

continuous improvement, such as materials frame agreements, more aggressive benefit-based negotiations and creating an inventory strategy as EDPR NA plans to take over maintenance of their operating wind farms. But the best challenge for the Procurement Team this year is rolling out SAP to all areas of EDPR NA.

Instituto EDP and EDP Renováveis forge partnership in Tramandaí The Instituto EDP and EDP Renováveis entered into a partnership to provide information, culture and education to the community living near the Tramandaí Wind Farm in Rio Grande do Sul Brazil, which is expected to be implemented at the end of this year. In June, the Instituto and EDP Renováveis both met with the Secretary for Social Action Luiz Carlos Gauto da Silva, the Secretary for Education Alvanira and Under Secretary for the Environment Antonio Matos, to get to know them, learn about the dynamics of the municipality and start a dialogue of cooperation with the local authorities with respect to the social-environmental approach. For Ana Maria Schneider, from the Instituto EDP, and Patricia de Oliveira Ramos, an environmental engineer with EDP Renováveis, the initial step is to provide information on safety, make sure people understand what the project is and who EDP is, as well as build a relationship of trust with the people.

Dialogue with the community At the end of August, the Instituto EDP and EDP Renováveis attended an extraordinary meeting with the (Community Committee for Public Safety) (Consepro), an organization which brings together representatives from various local police forces, businessmen and the South Zone . Ninety-four people attended ‘Dialogues with the Community’, an initial meeting with the people living near the wind farm (South Zone of Tramandaí) Luiz Galdino, head of Development with EDP Renováveis gave a presentation. fter nine years of opposition, construction began in the spring of 2010 on Kittitas Valley Wind Farm in Ellensburg, Washington. Project development started in 2001 and was faced with early opposition. “The opponents perceived the visual impact of the project as unacceptable,” said Development Project Manager Joy Potter. In 2003, EDPR NA, then Horizon Wind Energy, submitted its first application for site certification to the state’s Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council. The Governor approved the proj-

ect in 2008, however, local opposition groups immediately contested the decision. The case went before the State Supreme Court which upheld the Governor’s decision. “We have spent a lot of time and money on studies, analyses, and the permitting process. It’s great to watch it all pay off,” said Potter. Construction Manager Tom Burke is leading the construction of the101MW project which will be completed in November 2010 and will consist of 48 Suzlon S88 turbines.

edp is more than energy, it’s life

EDP is part of people’s life. Over 20 million people in 12 countries make our energy their own, at home, at work, at school, everywhere. This is why we continue to invest in development and technology, in minimizing the environmental impact of our operations and, above all, in initiatives that preserve the environment, that preserve life. For all this we can say that EDP is more than energy, it’s life.
