“When I was applying to dental school, I wanted to attend a school where I could feel at home. Four years is a long time to spend somewhere, and I wanted to make sure it was a good fit. My first impression of Penn has held true - a community of hardworking students, faculty, and staff who care about each other and their patients. I have enjoyed my friendships with my classmates. We have learned together, supported, and challenged each other.” SOREN CHRISTENSEN, DMD STUDENT

Students can apply for funded program options during their first year; they include a Master of Bioethics, Master of Science in Bioengineering, Master of Law, Master of Science in Higher Education, Master of Public Health, and Master of Science in Translational Research. A Master of Business Administration and JD Degree in Law are self-funded programs, which students can apply for their third year.
HONORS DEGREE PROGRAM Those students with the interest, motivation, and required academic achievement can earn a DMD degree with honors. The competitive honors program is designed to cultivate a leadership outlook in a select group of exceptional students and enable them to develop the skills to leverage their leadership potential in seven honors areas — research, clinical dentistry, community health, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry as well as radiological sciences.
SELECTIVES PROGRAM The Selectives Program enhances the predoctoral curriculum by allowing students to individualize their education to reflect their own professional interests. Selectives are offered to second-year and third-year students who must undertake several courses to fulfill the requirements of the Selectives Program.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Students have the opportunity for significant community engagement each year of dental school. All students complete a core of service-learning activities with schools, health centers, and community agencies in the Philadelphia region, and provide oral health education, screening, referral and clinical care. Dental students also have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in community health through elective honors projects and enrolling in the DMD/ MPH dual-degree program.

Here, you will learn to apply the latest techniques and technologies within general dentistry, and also be exposed to the leading advances in specialty care through rotations in each of the School’s specialty clinics, the training ground for our respected postdoctoral programs. Clinical experiences begin your first year as you learn to assist upperclassmen on the clinic floor. Students and faculty handle approximately 22,000 patient visits each year in the School’s teaching clinics, with a diverse patient population that ensures a wide range of clinical cases.

And within the clinic, you will learn to apply the latest technologies in digital dentistry. As part of Penn Dental Medicine’s incorporation of digital workflow that includes digital radiography and digital patient records, all DMD students learn to use intraoral scanners and chairside CAD/CAM technology. Within the School’s CAD/ CAM Design and Milling Center, students gain direct, handson experience designing and milling ceramic restorations under the supervision of dental technicians and clinical faculty who specialize in digital dentistry.
