PENN DENTAL MEDICINE FACTS ◆E stablished in 1878 as the Dental Department of the University of Pennsylvania, the School of Dental Medicine is among the oldest university-affiliated dental institutions in the country with a history deeply rooted in forging precedents in dental education, research, and patient care. ◆ I n 1897, Thomas W. Evans, a Philadelphia native and clinician who spent most of his life in France as the dentist to European nobility, left his estate to create a dental school that was “second to none.” Evans’ bequest would become one with the University, creating the Thomas W. Evans Museum and Dental Institute, which opened in 1915. Today, the Evans Building remains the site of much of the School’s clinical instruction. ◆T he dental campus also includes the Robert Schattner Center and the Leon Levy Center for Oral Health Research, home to the basic sciences and extensive research activities. ◆P enn Dental Medicine is a major provider of care in West Philadelphia and through outreach programs, students log nearly 24,500 hours each year serving approximately 20,000 residents in the surrounding Philadelphia neighborhoods. ◆M any dental innovations and sub-disciplines had their early beginnings at Penn Dental Medicine, including the recognition of microbes in caries and periodontal disease by W. D. Miller; the discipline of oral medicine by Lester Burkett; endodontics under Louis Grossman; and the discipline of periodontal prosthesis by Morton Amsterdam. ◆P enn Dental Medicine’s academic programs cross many disciplines and borders, including eight dual-degree programs with other Penn schools. ◆P enn Dental Medicine alumni make up a national and international community of more than 10,500 graduates (living), who are among dentistry’s leading clinicians, educators, and researchers.
