BUILDING CAREERS ACROSS DISCIPLINES

ADVANCED GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

Discover a vibrant interdisciplinary environment with diverse degree programs for varied stages of your dental career. Through innovative courses, learners gain the tools and skills needed to take their career to the next level. Here’s what Penn Dental Medicine alumni, faculty, and current students are saying about our programs.

“I joined the DScD program to become a clinicianscientist and remain in academia. A big part of my decision to attend Penn Dental Medicine is due to the fact that I was able to complete my residency concurrent with the DScD program and finish within five years.”

“As a foreign-trained dentist, I was looking for a program that would enhance my profile and increase my chances for acceptance into a U.S. dental school. The MADS program gave me the opportunity to take courses online with dental students and residents and gain a sense of what the school is looking for in a candidate.”

“We want to develop oral health leaders right there between the evidence and decision makers. Students will be trained in a variety of disciplines from evidence creation to policy development and implementation.”

“We are very proud that a significant number of MSOB graduates have gone on to academic careers in both the United States and abroad. The program has become an integral component of training the next generation of leaders in the various specialties.”

“The MOHS program at Penn Dental Medicine does a great job of providing students with an insight into the life of a dental student. Through taking D1 level classes, I feel more prepared for dental school. The program also provides opportunities to observe in a clinical setting, as well as gain valuable field research to make you a more competitive applicant.”

MASTER OF ORAL HEALTH SCIENCES (MOHS)

PREPARE FOR DENTAL SCHOOL ADMISSIONS & HEALTH SCIENCE CAREERS

The Master of Oral Health Sciences (MOHS) enhances preparation for dental school admission and careers in health science through two distinct tracks. The MOHS for Predental Track Students provides college graduates interested in applying to dental school with graduate-level qualifications to support that process, while clinicians with dental degrees from outside the country can bolster their U.S. dental school admissions preparation through the MOHS for Non-U.S-Trained Dentists

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

• Rigorous didactic curricula

• Clinical rotations observing general restorative patient care and in specialty clinics and community sites

• Dental Admission Test (DAT) prep for Predental track students; Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) prep for Non-U.S. Trained track students.

• Culminating capstone research project on an oralhealth related topic

“The MOHS program is a great way to bridge the gap between an undergraduate and dental school education. It was extremely helpful to be able to take ‘actual’ dental school courses prior to matriculation into dental school.”

DOCTOR OF SCIENCE IN DENTISTRY (DScD)

ENTER THE FIELD OF ACADEMIC DENTISTRY

Preparing students to enter the field of academic dentistry for successful careers as clinical or basic science researchers, the Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) can be pursued concurrently with a postgraduate specialty certificate program or independently in the non-certificate track for those individuals who have already completed clinical specialty training. Students conduct research across disciplines with the option to not only work with researchers from Penn Dental Medicine, but also with faculty from Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Veterinary Medicine.

For the DScD with a specialty certificate, clinical, didactic, and research aspects are integrated throughout all years of the program, ranging from five to six years depending on the clinical specialty. The DScD without a certificate is four years in length.

“As a DScD student, you have access to resources and mentors across the entire Penn ecosystem. You have the freedom to pursue diverse clinical and research interests.”

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ORAL BIOLOGY (MSOB)

ENHANCE POSTGRADUATE STUDY, ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS

An option to pursue concurrently with a graduate dental education specialty program, the Master of Science in Oral Biology (MSOB) also helps to prepare students for opportunities within academic dentistry. Candidates receive the MSOB degree after completion of both their specialty training and the Master’s curriculum.

“The MSOB program has been invaluable in my academic career development. I’ve co-authored multiple manuscripts and built relationships with experienced faculty at the forefront of my discipline. It has allowed me to cultivate research and medical writing skills as I transition into my next stage in academia.”

MASTER OF ADVANCED DENTAL STUDIES (MADS)

A HYBRID PROGRAM // STRENGTHEN KNOWLEDGE IN A DENTAL SPECIALTY

The Master of Advanced Dental Studies (MADS) program offers students a flexible curriculum through synchronous and asynchronous coursework combined with an on-campus clinical rotation. The 12-month program is designed for those that have a dental degree (DMD/DDS/BDS or equivalent) to pursue professional enrichment in a clinical discipline while continuing their dental practice or training. The six-week clinical rotation provides experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care through observation.

DIRECTED TO:

• Domestic and international dentists who wish to enhance their knowledge in a clinical discipline or improve their qualifications when applying to U.S. residency programs

• International dentists with U.S. specialty degrees whose home country requires a Master’s degree for recognition of the specialty

• U.S. graduates of specialty programs who wish to refresh their knowledge in their field through a structured program

EARN A MADS IN ONE OF SIX CLINICAL DISCIPLINES:

• Endodontics

• Oral Medicine

• Orthodontics

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ORAL AND POPULATION HEALTH (MOPH)

• Pediatric Dentistry

• Periodontics
