FROM THE DEAN The last year has been extraordinary for Penn Dental Medicine and for me. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had the pleasure of meeting graduates at events from coast to coast. I now have a deeper understanding of the pride our School engenders and the impact we have had on the profession. Our current students are equally impressive. Brilliant and compassionate in equal measures, they, too, are destined for greatness. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Report includes an update about the Power of Penn Dental Medicine capital campaign. Launched six years ago, the campaign was publicly introduced in 2018. To date, $45 million has been donated, surpassing all previous campaigns. These gifts have allowed us to vastly improve the Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s infrastructure for teaching and scientific discovery, add to financial aid resources, and enhance patient care. Thank you to everyone who has made the campaign a priority in your philanthropy. Many other initiatives are in progress. One is the planned Care Center for Persons with Disabilities. This Center will increase access to care for individuals with physical, cognitive, or developmental maladies. It will also ensure that every student is prepared to serve this growing constituency, which numbers more than 47 million people in the U.S. alone. Our new Alumni Scholars program is helping students focus on their studies, not on the burden of financing their education. The new Center for Clinical and Translational Research will be an important gateway for our dental school researchers to collaborate with scientists across the University to advance health for all.

Historic Structure Now State-of-the-Art As the School’s iconic Thomas Evans Building marked its 100th birthday in 2015, the School launched the Evans Building Centennial Renaissance to create a state-of-the-art facility throughout this historic structure. The most transformative project of the Power of Penn Dental Medicine campaign, this two-year, $37 million project involved all four levels of the Evans Building, changing the use and flow of most areas while preserving beloved architectural details. The Renaissance project ushered the Evans Building, and indeed the entire School, into a new era.

Through the Evans Renaissance project, the Lower Concourse of the Building has been completely transformed into a student-centered area. It features a state-of-the-art preclinical simulation lab — a bright, high tech learning environment with 90 workstations, each with a simulation unit fully outfitted with dental equipment. And new in 2019 is a CAD/CAM Design and Milling Center, where students apply digital dentistry to design and mill ceramic restorations. Also in the Lower Concourse are seminar rooms, small group study rooms, the William W.M. Cheung Auditorium, a student lounge and locker room, and the Office of Student Life. Changes on the Evans Building’s first floor include the addition of a new 54-chair predoctoral teaching clinic — the Henry Schein Cares Clinic in honor of Edward & Shirley Shils — along with a new executive administration suite and café. While on the second floor, history combines with the needs of today’s students in the reimagined Leon Levy Library, featuring the main reading room in the space of the building’s original library, and additional reading and study rooms on the third floor, which also houses new faculty and administrative offices.

Transformative Spaces On the heels of the Evans Renaissance projects, one of the School’s most devoted graduates — the late Dr. Robert I. Schattner (D’48) – continued to move the School’s facilities forward. The renovation of the Evans Building’s Main Clinic (becoming the Robert I. Schattner Clinic) and a two-story addition to the Robert Schattner Center (the Schattner Pavilion) were both made possible through a $15 million gift from Dr. Schattner before his death in 2017; both projects were completed in 2018. From the incorporation of CAD/ CAM technology and customdesigned operatories (74) to the dramatic wall of 17 ½-foot windows, the Schattner Clinic is designed for optimal educational and patient care experiences. The Schattner Pavilion builds upon the School’s unified campus, connecting to both the Leon Levy Center for Oral Health Research and the Evans Building on two levels. A new gathering space for the Penn Dental Medicine community occupies the first floor of the Pavilion and a waiting area for the Schattner Clinic makes up the second floor.

The Alumni Scholars Program: Past Graduates Pay It Forward From his many years as a member and then Chair of Penn Dental Medicine’s Board of Overseers to his current leadership of the Dean’s Council, alumnus Dr. Martin D. Levin (D’72, GD’74) has always been eager to help make a difference in the institution that enabled him to pursue a rewarding career in dental medicine. Now, he and his wife, Sue, are helping to do the same for a Penn Dental Medicine student, as the inaugural donors to the School’s new Alumni Scholars program. “Sue and I are honored to participate in the Alumni Scholars program,” says Dr. Levin, who earned both his DMD

and certificate in endodontics at Penn Dental Medicine. “We understand it aims to provide critically important support for students who are facing significant financial challenges. Each student should be able to focus on learning and innovation, which defines the Penn experience, instead of burdensome financial concerns. This scholarship recognizes the value of each individual student and enables us to help.” Through this new scholarship program, donors can establish a named scholarship directed either to a DMD student through the

four years of his/her education or to a postdoctoral resident. Donors receive an annual report with news about their named scholar. “Being able to follow our supported student’s progress gives us a unique opportunity to learn about programs at the school from the student’s perspective, and perhaps provide some insights for the road ahead,” notes Dr. Levin, whose scholarship will be supporting a DMD student. “We are looking forward to meeting him or her at the upcoming scholar/donor dinner in November.”

Honoring a Legacy of Leadership The Robert Vanarsdall Scholarship Fund and the D. Walter Cohen Scholarship Fund honor the legacy of leadership of two highly respected faculty members, while paving the way for the next generation of leaders in the fields of orthodontics and periodontics, respectively. The funds provide scholarship opportunities to students pursuing postdoctoral study in these respective disciplines.

A member of the School’s faculty for 45 years, Dr. Vanarsdall served as Chair of the Department of Orthodontics from 1982-2011 and Director of the Postdoctoral Orthodontics Program from 19812010. Until his death in 2017, he remained Professor and Director of the Orthodontics/Periodontics Postdoctoral Program, which he formed in 1975.

The Cohen Fund was formed in memory of Dr. D. Walter Cohen (C’47, D’50) upon his death in 2018. Dr. Cohen’s time at Penn Dental Medicine spanned more than three decades. He joined the School’s faculty in 1951, and in 1963, established the School’s Department of Periodontics and became its first Chair. By the time he was named Dean in 1972 (serving through 1983), he was a nationally known investigator in periodontal disease.

Bringing Dental Care to the Community Serving patients in the communities where they live, work, and go to school is an increasingly significant part of the mission of Penn Dental Medicine. For school children, the PennSmiles bus has become a recognizable and welcome part of West and Southwest Philadelphia neighborhoods. A 2017 campaign gift from Delta Dental of Pennsylvania is keeping the program running strong. The gift supported the purchase of a brand-new, high tech mobile dental clinic, which serves about 5,000 students a year.

both in West Philadelphia, and the South Street-based Puentes de Salud, a health care clinic assisting new immigrants. Patient visits among these sites will rise from 50 a week to more than 300 — or about 15,000 patient visits per year. Through this “hub and spoke model” of clinical education, the School will provide students with increased clinical experience while also fostering a better understanding of their role in improving health and addressing health disparities.

Bolstering Nutritional Education

“PennSmiles is our flagship program in terms of bringing oral health education and dental care to the community,” says Dr. Joan Gluch, Chief of the Division of Community Oral Health. “The new bus is ensuring continuity in care for the children we serve.”

Dental Medicine alumna and Board of Overseers member Dr. Joanne Chouinard-Luth (D’79) has had a lifelong interest in nutrition that is now enhancing nutrition education for the School’s students, faculty, and patients alike.

Penn Dental Medicine is expanding by a factor of ten the amount of community-based care provided by our students and faculty. The campaign will support adding 11 new dental chairs at partner sites, including Sayre Health Center and Mercy LIFE (Living Independently For Elders),

She and her husband, John Luth (WG’79), contributed $250,000 to create the Penn Dental Medicine Nutrition Education Program to expand dental education in nutrition using a patient-centered approach. The program was instrumental in recruiting registered nutritionist, Matthew Whipple, RDN, LDN, who joined the School in March 2019. Matthew works with students and patients chairside on nutritional counselling and has set up a referral process for separate counselling sessions with patients as well. He also is teaching courses and educating the entire Penn Dental Medicine community on healthy eating through his popular tastings, where he shares easy, nutritious recipes.

JOIN US Care Center for Persons with Disabilities Millions of people of all ages live with disabilities—developmental or acquired, physical or intellectual—that can have profound effects on their lives. A new Care Center for Persons with Disabilities, now in the planning stage with the goal to open in the fall of 2020, will be designed to meet their dental care needs and establish the School as a leader in serving patients with disabilities. “Nearly a third of our patient population has a significant disability requiring assistance of one form or another,” says Dean Mark Wolff. “This isn’t a special need—it’s a basic need.” At approximately 5,000 square feet, the Center will feature 12 operatories, all designed to accommodate wheelchairs. Some rooms will also be outfitted with hover dental chairs, and at least one room will accommodate patients on a gurney. A stimulation room with low lighting and sound baffling will serve patients with sensory sensitivities. All students will gain direct experience treating patients in the Center. INVESTING IN RESEARCH The Power of Penn Dental Medicine campaign is advancing the School’s research enterprise through investment in new research faculty, new research funds that foster collaboration across disciplines, and a new Center for Clinical and Translational Research.

Supporting Cancer Care, Expanding Clinical Research Recent recruit Dr. Patricia Corby, who joined Penn Dental Medicine in April 2019 as Associate Professor of Oral Medicine, is bringing her research to bear for cancer patients undergoing radiation, while looking to advance clinical research school-wide in the newly created role of Associate Dean for Translational Research. Coming to Penn Dental Medicine from NYU College of Dentistry with a wealth of experience in microbial genetics, bioinformatics, and clinical research operations, Dr. Corby aims to develop a robust translational medicine program, expanding opportunities and support right on campus for faculty to move findings from the lab into the clinic. An expert in clinical trials, she has ambitious plans to build the School’s capacity for supporting faculty conducting trials in its own facilities and is overseeing the development of a Center for Clinical and Translational Research.

“We want to build a hub for faculty conducting clinical trials, so that patients can be seen there, screened and included in studies,” Dr. Corby says. In her view, with NIH supporting more translational research than in the past, there hasn’t been a better time to do the types of clinical research that she has overseen in her past positions. Among her own current projects, what started as a pilot study testing the impact of oral health on reducing oral mucositis in patients receiving radiation for head and neck cancer has grown into an $8 million NIH-funded clinical study that she is embarking on this year in collaboration with Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology.

Research Funds Advancing Study Across Disciplines A number of new research funds and fellowships are advancing study and collaboration across disciplines: The Dental Hygiene Research & Innovation Fund supports hygienists working with dental faculty to initiate projects to enhance patient education and well-being. The Dr. Thomas P. Sollecito One Health Fellowship in Oral Medicine, supporting educational programming within the Department of Oral Medicine for veterinary dentists or oral medicine fellows with an interest in veterinary oral medicine. Established through a gift from Dr. Jamie G. Anderson, the fellowship is named in honor of Dr. Thomas Sollecito, Professor and Chair of Oral Medicine, who is administering the program. On the faculty for nearly 50 years, Dr. Ned Lally mentored scores of students and raised the research profile of the School through his work on microbial pathogenesis in periodontal disease. With his passing in 2019, the Dr. Edward T. Lally Fund was created to support research lectures and symposia in his name. The Penn Endo Clinic Innovation Fund provides resources for equipment, technology, and training, ensuring that the School’s Syngcuk Kim Endodontic Clinic remains outfitted with the most advanced technologies and continues to advance the Department’s leadership in the integration of the operating microscope into endodontic education and practice.
