Message from the Dean Walking in my West Philadelphia neighborhood the other day, I passed a house with a sign in a window that read “Thank You COVID Warriors.” I was immediately taken back to the early days of the pandemic, when New Yorkers and other city dwellers around the world would stand outside on the street, or go to their windows, to clap and cheer for our healthcare workers treating COVID patients. Thankfully, vaccines—developed in large part by scientists at Penn—and new drug therapies have kept millions out of the hospital and eased the strain on those same healthcare workers. But, for those of you in the Class of 2022, the path to graduation came with its own challenges. Many of you took a risk by entering a program of study before you could visit Penn. Your move to Philadelphia was delayed by international travel

restrictions, maybe for a year. Your studio met on Miro or BlueJeans. You got to know your classmates in Zoom Happy Hours. You had your first studio over the summer. Through it all, we kept one another safe and healthy. So, today, we stand and cheer for you! The resourcefulness and resilience you demonstrated these past two or three years will be essential to our success as we confront climate change, social inequities, and other challenges yet unknown. Congratulations!

Julian Brave NoiseCat, a member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq’escen and a descendant of the Lil’Wat Nation of Mount Currie, is a writer and filmmaker currently based in the Pacific Northwest. He is a fellow at New America and the Type Media Center, and his first book, We Survived the Night, will be published by Alfred A. Knopf in North America, by Profile Books in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, by Albin Michel in France, and by Aufbau Verlag in Germany. Alongside journalist, filmmaker, and friend Emily Kassie, he is concurrently co-directing his first documentary, which follows the search for unmarked graves at the residential school NoiseCat’s family was sent to in Williams Lake, British Columbia. The project is supported by the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program and the Catapult Film Fund, among others. NoiseCat’s work has been recognized with numerous awards including the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism Prize, which honors “excellence in long-form, narrative or deep reporting on stories about underrepresented and/or misrepresented groups in the present American landscape.” In 2021, he was named to the TIME100 Next list of emerging leaders alongside the starting point guard of his fantasy basketball team, Luka Doncic.

hadi el kebbi
Hadi El Kebbi is a 2022 Master of Architecture graduate. While at Penn, El Kebbi enjoyed the creative collaboration between multiple design disciplines through his involvement with city planners and landscape architects. His design interests, academically and professionally, are centered around community engagement and computational design. El Kebbi developed his pedagogical interests through multiple teaching assistant positions, as well as a research assistant position with the Polyhedral Structures Laboratory under Assistant Professor of Architecture Masoud Akbarzadeh. During the summer of 2021, he was involved with Fresh Air Everywhere, a program offered by PennPraxis with the Fresh Air Fund and the Beam Center, in which he co-led a design studio on Governors Island, New York. The studio introduced New York City youths from disadvantaged neighborhoods to design tools and concepts, and how they can be used to address socio–political matters and urban interventions. Outside of design, El Kebbi has been an active member of Penn Rising Senior Summer Academy and Penn’s Student Mentorship Program, programs that offer college and career guidance to Philadelphia public and charter high school students. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and Music from Lehigh University, and has worked at firms in Beirut and the U.S.
