Match reports: Opponent: Whitworth Valley Date: 7th September 2013 Venue: Home Result: Lost 1-3 Match report For the first 10 minutes Pennine Juniors had the majority of possession with some good attacking play but just couldn’t find a way through on goal and, due to solid defending by Nathaniel Hughes and Daniel Bentham, Whitworth only had one half chance with a long range shot at the Pennine goal which was easily gathered up by James Wynne. The best chance fell to Pennine on 15 minutes when a delightful pass from Tyler Carberry found Jackson Davis-Iqbal in the Whitworth penalty box who unleashed a shot on target which was finely blocked by the Whitworth goalkeeper. Jackson pounced on the rebound but was again thwarted by a fine save. Another rebound for Jackson to have a go at and for the third time was superbly saved by the Whitworth goalkeeper who showed outstanding goalkeeping! 22 minutes gone and Whitworth had earned themselves a corner which was put into the danger area and slotted home from close range (1-0 to Whitworth Valley). Pennine Juniors responded well with some good football and on 28 minutes a sweeping pass from Douglas Poole found Tyler Carberry but the shot was saved by the Whitworth goalkeeper. Page | 4

12 minutes into the 2nd half Douglas Poole, who had been very active in midfield, took a heavy knock to his left knee and was forced to come off the pitch. Just a few minutes later, a superb pass from Daniel Bentham found Tyler Carberry who then surged towards the Whitworth penalty box and fired a shot towards the far post which flew past the Whitworth goalkeeper and into the back of the net! (Pennine 1-1 Whitworth). Within a minute of the restart Whitworth regained the lead when a goal kick from James Wynne found a Whitworth player in midfield who didn’t hesitate in blasting the ball back towards the Pennine goal and with James Wynne still trying to get back from the edge of his penalty area he just couldn’t reach the ball. (Pennine 1-2 Whitworth). For the following 9 or 10 minutes both teams contested the ball well but no clear cut chances until 5 minutes before the end when Whitworth Valley caught us on the break and because the Pennine midfield were slow to react they managed to score a 3rd goal. Final score Pennine Juniors 1-3 Whitworth Valley. Overall, it was a decent performance by Pennine Juniors for their first match of the season considering they only had a squad of 10 players (2 of them brand new to the team), there has been a change in Manager, several players missing from training sessions in the close season due to summer holidays and a lack of friendly matches to prepare them for the new 9 a-side format. However, I’m sure they’ll soon get back into the swing of things under the guidance of their new Manager, Andy Watson.

Opponent: Radcliffe Borough Bulls Date: 21st September 2013 Venue: Home Result: Lost 0-5 Match report From the kick-off Pennine applied some early pressure on the Bulls defence. However, Bulls defended strongly and cleared their lines well. Bulls attacked in numbers, exploiting a weakness in Pennines defensive left side, and it took some stout defending by Nathaniel Hughes and a good save by James Wynne to end the pressure. The absence of our defender Dougie Poole was certainly being felt early on and indeed throughout the game. Bulls remained strong in midfield, with Pennine struggling at times to break through, looking a tad out of shape and lacking in cohesion, failing to get back after losing possession. Daniel Bentham showed strength in midfield, clearing from constant Bulls attacks. An encouraging Jackson Davis-Iqbal run after receiving a decisive pass from Nathaniel Hughes was pleasing, with Tyler Carberry linking well to put some pressure on the Bulls defence. However, from a strong Bulls goalkeeper kick, Bulls won a corner from which Bulls scored their opening goal Pennine 0 - 1 Bulls Pennine kicked off, with Tyler Carberry and Jackson Davis-Iqbal showing some great link-ups in attack. However, Bulls were again strong both in defence and midfield, regaining possession and attacking in numbers. Pennine defended resolutely, with Ellie ClarksonDrewitt, Luke & Joseph Trinnaman and Tom Watson bravely clearing the line. However, Bulls regained the ball, and shot at goal, when Tom Watson was deemed to have handled the ball in the penalty area, following which Bulls scored a penalty - Pennine 0 – 2 Bulls. Page | 5

Joseph Trinnaman was substituted for Charlie Atkinson, a new signing for Pennine. Charlie showed some fine work in midfield, constantly chasing and showing an assured touch. However, Bulls applied more pressure on the Pennine defence, and, following a Bulls corner and a valiant save by James Wynne, an attempted clearance sent the ball into the Pennine net for an own goal- Pennine 0 – 3 Bulls. From the kick-off, Jackson Davis-Iqbal again showed lots of conviction and courage, taking on Bulls defence and winning the ball back when lost - but little support from the Pennine midfield dented his good work. Half -Time - Pennine 0 - Bulls 3 Pennine kicked off the 2nd half, showing some much needed spirit and a greater desire to win the ball which had been sadly lacking in the first half. Charlie Atkinson again shone, with some great touches and fearless tackling in midfield, ably supported by Daniel Bentham and Joseph Trinnaman. More pressure from a Bulls attack resulted in a headed goal from the Bulls - Pennine 0 - 4 Bulls. Tyler Carberry looked strong and his willingness to run at the Bulls defence late in the 2nd half down the right hand side lifted the Pennine team who looked likely to penetrate Bulls defence for a much needed goal. But Bulls came back again, hitting the Pennine post, which forced some great defending by Pennine. Charlie Atkinson took a pass well, drilling a tremendous pass through to Tyler Carberry who frustratingly stroked the ball wide of the Bulls goal. Luke Trinnamen , Charlie Atkinson and Daniel Bentham upped their game in midfield, looking stronger and winning 50-50 balls. A Bulls attack resulted in a spectacular save from James Wynne who palmed the ball over the Pennine net having looked like sure fire goal. Bulls were soon on the scoresheet again - Pennine 0 – 5 Bulls. Ellie Clarkson-Drewit began to grow in confidence in defence, clearing stray balls and working with her defenders. Another Bulls attack brought another great save from James Wynne. The last 7 minutes of the game looked more encouraging for Pennine, but Bulls continued to pile on the pressure, with a Bulls claimed goal deemed no goal by the referee after James Wynne was fouled. Pennine looked down from this point, with little communication from front to back. There were some valiant late efforts from Joseph Trinnamen and Jackson Davis-Iqbal who combined brilliantly to force Bulls into some serious defending. Opponent: Chadderton Park Dragons Date: 28th September 2013 Venue: Away Result: Won 1-6 Match report I don’t know if the previous week’s heavy defeat was still fresh in the minds of the Pennine players but they responded superbly. From the kick off it was evident that they were all determined to win Page | 6

this game and in the 1st minute Charlie Atkinson broke through the midfield and fired a shot on goal which was turned in by Jackson Davis-Iqbal (0-1). 2 minutes later Charlie Atkinson broke down the right passing the ball the Tyler Carberry who in turn passed to Jackson Davis-Iqbal firing a shot on target which was saved by the Dragons goalkeeper. Within seconds good pressure from the Pennine midfield resulted in another goal scored this time by Douglas Poole (0-2). From the restart Pennine found themselves under pressure but this was quickly thwarted by some fantastic defending by Luke & Joseph Trinnaman and Tom Watson with great support from Ellie Clarkson and Charlie Atkinson who again caused problems for the Dragons midfield which resulted in Charlie forcing a corner through sheer determination. Several minutes followed without any clear cut chances for either team but the link up play from Pennine was a joy to watch. Every Pennine player was hungry for the ball and I think this somewhat overwhelmed the Dragons team because every time they started to move forwards through midfield it was quickly broken down by Pennine who in turn attacked in numbers and in the 11th minute a very skilful overhead kick from Charlie Atkinson was blocked with Jackson Davis-Iqbal following up on the rebound which again was blocked resulting in a corner for Pennine. Jackson Davis-Iqbal latched onto the corner kick with his shot on target being blocked yet again. 16 minutes and some brilliant passing & movement by the Pennine midfield with Jackson Davis-Iqbal carving his way through the Dragons defence putting Charlie Atkinson through on goal but again the Dragons goalkeeper pulled off a fine save resulting in a corner to Pennine. The corner kick was cleared by the Dragons defence but fine work by Ellie Clarkson and Douglas Poole put Tyler Carberry through on goal only to be finely saved by the Dragons goalkeeper. Pennine Reds had put Chadderton Park Dragons under so much pressure that it was the 21st minute before Dragons had there 1st shot at the Pennine net only to put it wide. Up until now James Wynne in the Pennine goal hadn’t had much to do. Half time beckoned and I’m sure the Pennine players were ready for a short rest because they were without any substitutes and the entire team had worked very hard during the first half. At the restart, Pennine continued in the same frame of mind and immediately put Dragons under pressure with some brilliant link up play from Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Douglas Poole who in turn put Tyler Carberry through on goal but this time the Dragons goalkeeper couldn’t keep the ball out of the net (0-3). Dragons kicked off again but Tom Watson won the ball back in midfield and played a lovely through ball to Jackson Davis-Iqbal who again was thwarted by the Dragons goalkeeper. At this point Dragons piled the pressure on found there way into the Pennine penalty box but James Wynne pulled off a fine save and the ball was cleared by Ellie Clarkson and Luke Trinnaman which then resulted in Pennine winning a throw in just inside the Dragons half. Joseph Trinnaman took the throw in which found Tyler Carberry who then passed to Jackson Davis-Iqbal attacking down the right flank. Turning inside the Dragons defender Jackson, on his weaker left foot, unleashed a peach of a shot towards the far post which swerved past the Dragons goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net! (0-4). Dragons responded immediately with some good attacking play through midfield and unfortunately for Pennine the ball found it’s way to a Dragons player unmarked in the penalty area who then slotted the ball past James Wynne (1-4). From the restart Pennine once again applied constant Page | 7

pressure through some good work by Douglas Poole, Ellie Clarkson, Tyler Carberry and Charlie Atkinson with strong support by Tom Watson, Luke Trinnaman and Joseph Trinnaman. 17 minutes into the second half and some determined play by Tyler Carberry passing to Douglas Poole who then found Charlie Atkinson but the flick on went agonisingly past the far post by inches. On 22 minutes a surging run into the penalty box by Jackson Davis-Iqbal forced a corner which Tyler Carberry took and the ball was put into the danger area with a couple of attempts to clear by the Dragons defence but pure grit and determination by Jackson Davis-Iqbal, not to mention his desire to score his hatrick, he managed to regain the ball and calmly slotted it into the net for his hatrick (15). With only a few minutes of the match remaining you’d think the Pennine players would relax a little and take a well earned breather but this was not the case and with some great interplay between Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Tyler Carberry Pennine’s 6th goal was blasted in by Tyler for his 2 nd goal of the match. This was a fantastic team performance by 9 players who showed great strength, skill, determination and the desire to win this match but above all they supported each other brilliantly. Tom Watson, Luke Trinnaman and Joseph Trinnaman were solid in defence, which kept the pressure off goalkeeper James Wynne, and linked up well with Tyler Carberry, Ellie Clarkson, Douglas Poole and Charlie Atkinson in midfield which enabled Pennine to apply constant attacking pressure throughout the entire match and the 6-1 win was thoroughly deserved. Manager, Andy Watson, awarded man of the match to Jackson Davis-Iqbal who had been a constant threat, scoring 3 goals but it could easily have been 6 or 7.

Opponent: Westbury Sports Club Wolves Date: 5th October 2013 Venue: Home Result: Won 2-0 Match report In the absence of Manager Andy Watson, Bernard Carberry took over the responsibility of managing the team. The first few minutes was a cagey affair with both teams sounding each other out without any real clear cut chances. The first opportunity came to Pennine Red after 5 minutes when a goal kick taken by Tom Watson found Tyler Carberry in midfield who then played a lovely through ball to Jackson Davis-Iqbal running into the Wolves penalty area but his shot was well saved by the goalie. Just a few minutes later, Jackson Davis-Iqbal found himself through on goal again but a magnificent tackle by the Wolves defender just as Jackson was about to ‘pull the trigger’! 11 minutes and a Wolves attack was jointly thwarted by Joseph Trinnaman and Douglas Poole in their own penalty area which resulted in a quick counter attack assisted by Ellie Clarkson and the very industrious Charlie Atkinson and once again, Jackson Davis-Iqbal found himself running into the Wolves penalty area with the ball at his feet but instead of sliding the ball square to an unmarked Tyler Carberry he obviously felt confident enough to score and his shot was just wide of the target. After 16 minutes Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Tyler Carberry both broke through the midfield, following some fine defending by Luke & Joseph Trinnaman and Tom Watson, a fine pass from Jackson to Tyler whose goal bound shot was stopped by the Wolves goalie. Within seconds, Tyler Carberry carved his way through again but this time made sure he buried the ball in the back of the Wolves net (1-0 to Page | 8

Pennine Red). Just 3 minutes later, Jackson Davis-Iqbal played a superb through ball to Tyler Carberry who cut through the Wolves defence and unleashed a shot that flew just over the crossbar. Some fantastic work in midfield by Nathaniel Hughes, Ellie Clarkson and Charlie Atkinson helped to create yet another goalscoring opportunity when a super pass to Jackson Davis-Iqbal by Tyler Carberry resulted in the shot whistling just wide of the post. 22 minutes and a Wolves corner found it’s way to one of their players on the outer edge of the Pennine penalty area who played a fine shot over the top of the crowded penalty area and it was sailing into the top corner of net until James Wynne pulled off a magnificent save and out for a corner which came to nothing in the end. A few minutes later Douglas Poole broke down the left flank, cut inside the advancing Wolves defender but his shot on goal was just wide of the mark. Very shortly afterwards there was some brilliant passing and movement around the Wolves penalty area by Charlie Atkinson, Jackson DavisIqbal and Tyler Carberry resulting in Tyler’s shot bouncing back off the Wolves post. Pennine continued the heavy pressure and a lovely pass from Tyler Carberry to Charlie Atkinson who blasted it home (2-0 to Pennine Red) From the restart Tyler Carberry regained possession and forged his way up the line, cut inside the Wolves defender, passed to Charlie Atkinson whose goal bound shot forced a corner and the half time whistle blew. Pennine kicked off the 2nd half and were immediately on the offensive with Douglas Poole playing the ball through to Charlie Atkinson who in turn passed to Nathanial Hughes whose shot hit the side netting. Within a minute Charlie Atkinson unleashed another goal bound shot only to be finely saved by the Wolves goalie. Once again Pennine were very active in midfield through Ellie Clarkson, Charlie Atkinson and Nathaniel Hughes whose shot forced yet another save from the Wolves goalie. Just a few minutes later Charlie Atkinson’s shot was saved but the resulting corner kick was wasted. A minute later and Charlie Atkinson forced his way through the Wolves defence only to be fouled just outside the penalty area. The free kick was taken by Tyler Carberry but charged down by the Wolves defence. After 11 minutes of the 2nd half a Pennine substitution and Jackson Davis-Iqbal replaced Charlie Atkinson who had been magnificent and I’m sure needed a well earned rest. Within a few minutes, Luke Trinnaman who had been a tower of strength in defence thwarted yet another Wolves attack and immediately turned defence into attack with Tyler Carberry playing a delightful through ball to Jackson Davis–Iqbal who only had the goalie to beat but yet another fine save from the Wolves goalie. 20 minutes of the 2nd half gone and a Wolves corner was well punched away by Pennine goalie James Wynne and cleared by Tom Watson with the help of Luke & Joseph Trinnaman and then some fine play in midfield by Ellie Clarkson, Douglas Poole and Nathaniel Hughes, passing to Jackson DavisIqbal who crossed the ball to Tyler Carberry who was advancing on goal but the power of the cross just eluded Tyler. With seconds to go there was another break down the right wing with Tyler passing to Joseph Trinnaman who then crossed the ball into the danger area but the Wolves goalie just got to it ahead of the advancing Jackson Davis-Iqbal. The full time whistle was blown and Pennine Red had recorded

their 2nd successive win with an outstanding display from all the players. Man of the match was awarded to Tom Watson who had been outstanding in defence.

Opponent: Roach Dynamos White Date: 12th October 2013 Venue: Away Result: Drew 6-6 Match report This was a rearranged match due to both teams having a bye in the weekend’s cup fixtures. Pennine were upbeat during the warm up following their two previous wins and the fact that Roach Dynamos had lost all their 5 opening games. 1st Half Pennine kicked off against a very strong headwind which would affect the course of the game throughout the match. The first two minutes was an even affair, both teams not really dominating. Roach then applied some pressure, aided by the wind at their backs and it took some serious defending by Pennine, with Charlie Atkinson particularly effective coming back from midfield to assist his defenders. Within 7 minutes, Roach pressed again, Pennine did not clear their lines , and Roach sent a looping shot into the Pennine net giving Pennine keeper James Wynne no chance. Roach 1 - Pennine 0 Pennine kicked-off, a great ball to Jackson Davis-Iqbal following some nice work by the Pennine midfield showed promise, as Jackson held off some aggressive tackling , but it was quickly snuffed out by the Roach defence .Luke Trinnaman and Douglas Poole showed great determination and an assured touch in defence and midfield, stopping Roach from penetrating into the Pennine box..Tyler Carberry put in some great work down the right hand side, but Roach tackled and cleared to ease the pressure. Although Pennine showed they were equal to many of Roach's forays into Pennine's last third, Pennine were not quick enough to the ball on occasions, and a Roach attacker was not picked up early enough slotting a goal past James Wynne. Roach 2 - Pennine 0 From the kick-off, Doug Poole and Luke Trinnaman again shown strength to cancel some good Roach approach work , especially from Roach's skilful number 6 who was a constant threat. Again, Roach capitalised from Pennine's failure to clear their lines and it was 3 nil to Roach as half time approached. It would seem at this point that the game was effectively lost, but more drama was about to unfold. Roach 3 - Pennine 0

Page | 10

Nathaniel Hughes had work hard in this first half but was substituted with William Strudwick coming on, a new signing for Pennine. More good approach play from Pennine saw a fantastic effort by Charlie Atkinson hit the Roach crossbar, but an alert Ellie Clarkson followed up with a nice effort which sent the ball past the Roach goalkeeper.

Roach 3 - Pennine 1 An early free kick for Pennine sent the ball close to the Roach penalty area, and a great effort from Will Strudwick just rose over the Roach crossbar. Pennine seemed to grow in confidence, soaking up the Roach attacks much better than the first half. Three consecutive corners from Roach were dealt with by the Pennine defence, and a strong last 5 minutes from Pennine boded well for the 2nd half. The half time whistle sounded, and at 3-1 Pennine looked like they could get something from this match, especially now that they were kicking with a strong wind at their backs.

Half Time - Roach 3 - Pennine 1 2nd Half Within 2 minutes, Pennine showed real determination and courage, with some great midfield work by Doug Poole who unleashed a ferocious shot which went agonisingly wide of the Roach goalpost. Jackson Davis-Iqbal was tireless in attack, winning the ball after Doug Poole fought bravely to win the ball back in midfield. A Pennine free kick was awarded following a foul on Charlie Atkinson - Tom Watson stroked a lovely powerful ball towards the Roach goal, only to hit the crossbar, and, just like Ellie Clarkson did in the first half, Jackson Davis-Iqbal pounced on the rebound and slotted home for our second goal. Roach 3 - Pennine 2 Roach kicked off and immediately went on the attack - Pennine struggled to pick up Roach forwards but Tom Watson was strong in defence and cleared the danger. Jackson DavisIqbal picked up the ball high up the pitch and picked out Ellie Clarkson who showed great skill, holding her nerve under pressure from a Roach defender to grab a magnificent equaliser to the delight of the team and manager. Roach 3 - Pennine 3 Again from the kick-off, Roach surged forwards, creating confusion and uncertainty in the Pennine defence, resulting in a well taken Roach goal which left brave goalkeeper James Wynne no chance. This was nervy stuff, the pendulum swinging to Roach then to Pennine it was superb entertainment and nerve-racking for both managers! Page | 11

Roach 4 - Pennine 3 Tyler Carberry was substituted for Will Strudwick. Pennine looked dangerous from the kickoff, and some good work from Will in midfield found Jackson who held on to the ball even after some strong pressure and tackle attempts from Roach, putting the ball past the Roach goalkeeper and giving Pennine a well deserved equaliser. Roach 4 - Pennine 4 Midway through the second half, the game looked like it could produce more goals as both sides went for the win. Pennine always looked the more likely to score, getting stronger and more confident as the game wore on. Another great battle in midfield gave Jackson DavisIqbal another chance on goal and he produced a sweet shot which sent the ball past the Roach goalkeeper for his hat-trick. Pennine were now on top for the first time in the game and well deserved too!! Roach 4 - Pennine 5 Pennine grew stronger late into this half, but some sloppy defending saw Roach almost stroll into our penalty area and score a soft goal. This was very disappointing for Pennine after getting in front, especially after being 3-1 down after half-time. Roach 5 - Pennine 5 The game was not over yet and you just knew more goals were in the offing. We didn't have to wait long for the next goal, which came from a beauty of a free-kick from Tom Watson which sailed sweetly into the Roach net!! The excitement was just too much and the nerves were well jangled! Roach 5 - Pennine 6 Pennine bravely fought hard during the last seconds of this great match, only to be left disappointed not to have won this game after a Roach free kick found the back of Pennine' net. Roach 6 - Pennine 6 The final whistle sounded, bringing to a conclusion a superbly entertaining game which Pennine on balance should have won. From 3-1 down at half-time it was a pleasure to witness the courage and conviction of the Pennine players who never gave the game up. A truly classic match!! Final Score - Roach 6 - Pennine 6 Man of the Match - Luke Trinnaman, who gave 100% in defence - a great performance. Opponent: Roach Dynamos White Page | 12

Date: 19th October 2013 Venue: Home Result: Won 2-0 Match report Following the extraordinary match against the same opponent the previous week I’m sure most players & parents thought we may have a similar match but this time the weather was a little kinder and the first half was end to end play but with very few clear cut chances and very cagey. It was 10 minutes before Pennine had any clear sight of goal after Tom Watson had halted a Roach attack, threading a fine pass through to Tyler Carberry whose shot sailed wide of the Roach net. Half time 0-0. In the second half Pennine started brightly and after 4 minutes Jackson Davis-Iqbal had a shot on target but it was well saved by the Roach goalkeeper. The resulting corner found Charlie Atkinson who placed a fine shot into the back of the Roach net (Pennine Red 1-0 Roach Dynamos White). Again, it was end to end football with both teams having their attacking play scuppered by their opponent’s defence and Pennine’s defence of Tom Watson, Luke Trinnaman and Joseph Trinnaman plus goalkeeper James Wynne had so far been solid but after 10 minutes Roach Dynamos were somehow allowed to form an attack down the right flank without much opposition and the resulting cross was slotted home by the Roach Dynamos forward giving James Wynne no chance! (Pennine Red 1-1 Roach Dynamos White). After a further 10 minutes of both teams cancelling each other out and neither side having any clear sight of goal, a promising run down the left wing by Nathaniel Hughes was abruptly stopped when he was clattered to the ground resulting in Nathaniel being injured so Tom Watson was brought back on to replace him. Just a few minutes later and after some great work in the midfield by Ellie Clarkson, Daniel Bentham, William Strudwick, Douglas Poole and Charlie Atkinson, the ball landed with Tyler Carberry who unleashed a shot on target which was covered by the Roach goalkeeper but a lapse in concentration caused him to fumble his save and it rolled agonisingly for him over the line, much to the delight of the Pennine players who celebrated being in the lead again. (Pennine Red 2-1 Roach Dynamos White). Pennine were now hungry for more goals and Charlie Atkinson played a fine pass to Jackson Davis-Iqbal who was now 1 on 1 with the Roach Dynamos goalkeeper but Jackson’s goal bound shot was superbly turned past the post. The resulting corner was cleared by Roach Dynamos but Pennine were soon on the attack again when Jackson Davis-Iqbal burst through the flat Roach defence, found himself 1 on 1 with the Roach goalkeeper again but this time scuffed his shot which went agonisingly past the far post.

Page | 13

Pennine were now attacking at every opportunity in order to seal the victory and with 2 minutes to go a very skilful attack by Charlie Atkinson resulted in Charlie being fouled just outside the Roach Dynamos penalty area. Up stepped Tom Watson who had scored a screamer of a free kick from a similar distance the previous week but this time his fine shot was just wide of the post. The full time whistle was blown and Pennine were celebrating their 3rd win from the last 4 games. Man of the match was awarded to Tom Watson for his solid display in defence. Opponent: Rochdale Phoenix Date: 9th November 2013 Venue: Home (reverse fixture) Result: Won 2-1 Match report This was always going to be a very tough match between 2 teams with similar standing in the league table and the very poor weather conditions would also make it even more difficult but Pennine had a great start in the 2nd minute with some great work down the left wing by Charlie Atkinson and a perfect through ball sent Jackson Davis-Iqbal into the Phoenix penalty area but Jackson’s 1st touch sent him wider than he wanted and a shot from a very tight angle went just wide of the post. Even though Pennine were a little rusty due to their previous 2 matches being postponed through bad weather they appeared to be fired up for this match and were competing well in all areas of the pitch and in the 3rd minute Tyler Carberry played an inch perfect pass sending Jackson Davis-Iqbal into the Phoenix penalty area but this time Jackson’s control was spot on when he calmly lofted the ball over the diving Phoenix goalkeeper and into the back of the net (Pennine Red 1-0 Rochdale Phoenix). Rochdale Phoenix upped their tempo over the next 15 minutes with some great passing and movement but were met with some excellent defending from Tom Watson, Nathaniel Hughes and Luke Trinnaman and supported really well in midfield by Dougie Poole, Joseph Trinnaman and Charlie Atkinson. In the 19th minute Phoenix had worked the ball well through midfield and down the left wing and when the Phoenix forward found himself bearing towards goal he unleashed a fierce shot on goal which looked to be well covered by the James Wynne but it was charged down by Dougie Poole with sheer determination to protect the Pennine goal. Manager Andy Watson made a triple substitution by taking off Charlie Atkinson, Nathaniel Hughes, Joseph Trinnaman and bringing on Will Strudwick, Daniel Bentham and Ellie Clarkson. Rochdale Phoenix were determined to get an equaliser and they were attacking Pennine constantly with some fantastic passing of the ball which kept Pennine on the back foot for long periods and their patience paid off when in the 28th minute Phoenix were awarded a free kick just outside the Pennine penalty area. Goalie, James Wynne, organised his wall but it was a very well taken free kick over the Pennine wall towards the top right Page | 14

corner of the net and although James Wynne did very well to get his finger tips to it he just couldn’t keep it out of the net (Pennine Red 1-1 Rochdale Phoenix). In the dying seconds of the 1st half Tyler Carberry once again sent Jackson Davis-Iqbal through towards goal from midfield with a perfect through ball but he still had a long way to run whilst maintaining control of the ball with 3 Phoenix defenders bearing down on him. Jackson did well to withstand the pressure from the chasing defenders and get a shot in but he scuffed it just wide of the post. The half time whistle blew and both teams took a well earned rest with the rain coming down harder. Pennine kicked off the 2nd half and immediately lost possession, finding themselves on the back foot once again but Ellie Clarkson got in some important tackles in the middle of defence and some great work in midfield by Dan Bentham and Will Strudwick took some pressure off the Pennine defence, albeit only for a short time because the Phoenix defence handled the pressure very well and were very quick to turn defence into attack. Rochdale Phoenix were a constant threat with good attacking play but Tom Watson, Ellie Clarkson and Luke Trinnaman were defending really well as a unit. In midfield Tyler Carberry took a heavy knock to the knee and was replaced by Joseph Trinnaman and after 12 minutes Pheonix’s constant pressure gave them a goalscoring opportunity but Tom Watson managed to clear the ball off the line. The ball was immediately pumped back into the Pennine danger area but James Wynne saw the danger and came running off his goal line to punch the ball away. 18 minutes into the second half and Tyler Carberry had recovered from his earlier injury to replace Jackson Davis-Iqbal who deserved a rest because he had been a constant threat up front. Tyler was involved in the action immediately after some fantastic interplay in the midfield from Dan Bentham, Charlie Atkinson and Dougie Poole with a lovely pass to put Tyler through on goal but the threat was overcome by some great goalkeeping and the Phoenix defence managed to clear the ball. With approximately 7-8 minutes of the match to go Dan Bentham and Ellie Clarkson were replaced by Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Nathaniel Hughes. With the clock ticking away towards the final whistle both teams were pressing for the winner and both teams were defending really well so it did look like they would share the points but with just a few minutes to go Charlie Atkinson was judged by the ref to have been fouled inside the Phoenix penalty area and awarded a penalty to Pennine Red much to the dismay of the Phoenix coaching staff who certainly made their feelings known! Up stepped Tyler Carberry with a very calmly taken penalty and buried it into the Phoenix net! (Pennine Red 2-1 Rochdale Phoenix). For the last couple of minutes Pennine literally had to defend their slim lead with their lives because Rochdale Phoenix bombarded them Page | 15

with attack after attack in their efforts to score an equaliser and it was a huge sigh of relief when the final whistle was eventually blown. There were a few players who were in contention for ‘Man of the Match’ this week but Andy awarded it to Luke Trinnaman for his outstanding display in defence. Regardless of anyone’s opinion about the penalty incident it was clear to see that nobody had a better view of it than the referee so it was a very brave decision, knowing that it would cause controversy, but he gave it as he saw it and that should be respected. Overall, it was a very entertaining match between 2 evenly matched teams in difficult conditions and both sets of players and coaching staff should be commended. Opponent: Wardle Warriors Blue Date: 16th November 2013 Venue: Home Result: Lost 2-3 Match report A much anticipated game for both Tyler Carberry and Dougie Poole because today’s opponents included their friends from school & rugby so it was no surprise that both Tyler & Dougie were heavily involved in today’s action! Ellie Clarkson and Will Strudwick both started as subs and Dan Bentham was unavailable to play. Right from the kick-off it was clear that Pennine Red were well and truly fired up for this match because they were contesting every ball, winning it in all areas and creating chances. It was just 3 minutes before Pennine had their first clear chance at goal following some very skilful play by Tyler Carberry in midfield and a lovely through ball to Jackson Davis-Iqbal, cutting right through the Wardle defence, but Jackson’s shot went just wide of the post. Pennine were constantly in attack mode but Wardle managed to break down the attacks but every time they did Pennine just retrieved the ball and attacked again. In the 10th minute Charlie Atkinson received the ball just outside the Wardle penalty area, after great work down the left by Tyler Carberry, but just as Charlie entered the area the alert Wardle goalkeeper saw the danger and quickly gathered the ball. Seconds later another Pennine attack but this time it was Jackson Davis-Iqbal who was thwarted when his shot was saved by the Wardle goalkeeper’s legs. 18 minutes played and both Joseph Trinnaman and Charlie Atkinson were substituted by Ellie Clarkson and Will Strudwick and the relentless attack continued. I’m sure all spectators from both camps felt that it wouldn’t be long before Pennine scored but it was Wardle who actually came the closest when, after their first real attack they hit the post and Pennine managed to clear the ball out of the danger area. 23 minutes gone and we thought Pennine’s effort was about to be rewarded when a superb pass from Dougie Poole found

Page | 16

Tyler Carberry running into the penalty area and just as he was about to shoot, the ball bobbled and Tyler’s shot went over the bar! 28 minutes and Wardle had their 2nd chance on goal after the Pennine defence had a momentary lapse in concentration but the Wardle striker shot over the bar. The half time whistle was blown shortly after and it had been a fantastic display of football by the Pennine team who deserved much more than a 0-0 scoreline. I also have to give credit to the Wardle team who worked very hard to keep a clean sheet despite the superior amount of goalscoring opportunities and possession by Pennine. The 2nd half kicked off and again Pennine were on the offensive. Tyler Carberry started an attack by sending Dougie Poole flying down the right wing, Tyler had continued his own run through midfield and by the time Dougie crossed the ball into the Wardle penalty area Tyler was there to receive it and promptly blasted the ball into the net for his 7th goal of the season. Fantastic football by Pennine and a fully deserved lead (Pennine Red 1-0 Wardle Warriors Blue). Just a minute later and another attack by Pennine, who were hungry for goals, but Tyler Carberry’s shot on target was well saved by the Wardle goalkeeper, Jackson Davis-Iqbal latched onto the rebound but the Wardle goalkeeper was there to save the day again with a fine block. Just a minute later and Tom Watson scored Pennine’s 2nd goal with a well directed header (Pennine Red 2-0 Wardle Warriors Blue). Apologies but I missed the build up to it as I was so busy making notes for the match report due to the constant waves of attack by Pennine! 8th minute, Jackson Davis-Iqbal passed to Tyler Carberry for another opportunity but Tyler’s shot was well held by the Wardle goalkeeper. 11 minutes into the 2 nd half, Will Strudwick and Nathanial Hughes, who had both worked tirelessly in midfield, were replaced by Charlie Atkinson and Joseph Trinnaman and within seconds Pennine had carved another goalscoring opportunity when Jackson Davis-Iqbal’s shot was saved with both Tyler Carberry and Charlie Atkinson having a go at the rebound but just couldn’t get the ball over the line! Just over half way through in this 2 nd half and Wardle Warriors, realising they desperately needed to do something if they were going to salvage anything from this game, started to pass the ball around with purpose but this didn’t stop Pennine from looking for the opportunity to score a 3rd goal and it was during one of these attacks that Wardle Warriors caught Pennine on the break in numbers and Ellie Clarkson was the only Pennine player, other than Pennine goalkeeper James Wynne, close enough to try and break down the attack but she just couldn’t keep up with the advancing Wardle striker who managed to keep his cool and slotted the ball into the Pennine net despite James Wynne’s effort to save it. (Pennine Red 2-1 Wardle Warriors Blue).

Page | 17

Even though Wardle were now on the front foot and clearly looking to score the equaliser, Pennine were equally confident and looking to kill the game off with a 3 rd goal so the next 10 minutes was a real battle with both teams attacking each other with gusto but, once again, Wardle caught Pennine on the break and managed to score their equaliser (Pennine Red 2-2 Wardle Warriors Blue). Obviously the Wardle camp were delighted that they’d managed to turn the game around and there was much dismay in the Pennine camp because they had totally dominated 75% of this game BUT the drama wasn’t over because there was still 2 minutes of normal time left with Wardle Warriors now feeling that they could actually win this match and that is exactly what they did when they broke down the right wing and the Wardle player smashed the ball towards the Pennine goal. I’m not sure if it was an intentional shot at goal or just aiming for the Wardle players attacking the penalty area but the ball somehow bypassed everyone in the penalty area and rattled in off the post! (Pennine Red 2-3 Wardle Warriors Blue). A devastating result for Pennine, especially when they had dominated with fantastic attacking play and solid defending for ¾ of the match! 2-0 up with 13 minutes left, should they have concentrated more on defending that lead instead of looking for a 3rd goal and leaving themselves wide open to the counter attack? I guess they’ll be different opinions about that but I’m sure everyone will agree that overall it was a brilliant performance by the Pennine team and they deserved much more than they got. Notable mentions for Tyler Carberry who was heavily involved in all areas of the pitch, Jackson Davis-Iqbal who was a constant threat as usual and very unlucky not to be on the score sheet, Luke Trinnaman, Joseph Trinnaman and Tom Watson for defending so superbly for the majority of the match, Nathaniel Hughes, Ellie Clarkson, Will Strudwick & Charlie Atkinson who all worked tirelessly, Dougie Poole who was a tower of strength yet again by constantly trying to motivate his team mates and finally James Wynne who always gives his best and kept a clean sheet for 47 minutes. I also have to say that Dan Bentham was sorely missed and I’m sure the result would have been different had he been available to play. We now look forward to the 2nd round cup match next Saturday against very tough opposition, Elton SC Tigers, who are a division above. Opponent: Elton SC Tigers (cup) Date: 30th November 2013 Venue: Home Result: Lost 0-6 Match report It was a tentative start to the match by both teams but after 4 minutes Pennine began to push forward and Douglas Poole shot on goal but it wasn’t powerful enough to trouble the Elton goalkeeper who easily gathered up the ball. Elton scored their 1st goal after 7 minutes following some sloppy defending by Pennine (Pennine Red 0-1 Elton SC Tigers). More tentative play followed but on 15 minutes Pennine had their best chance so far from a Page | 18

superb corner kick taken by Tyler Carberry met equally superbly by Tom Watson’s head sending the ball past the Elton goalkeeper but it hit the post and bounced out. The Pennine forwards tried their best to scramble the ball over the line but Elton managed to clear it. 20 minutes gone and Tyler Carberry played a delightful ball over the top of the Elton defence to an advancing Jackson Davis-Iqbal who only had the goalkeeper to beat but an Elton defender with lightning speed managed to get back and put the ball out for a throw in. 25 minutes and the Elton right winger was allowed to advance unchallenged towards goal and promptly slotted it past James Wynne (Pennine Red 0-2 Elton SC Tigers). 2 minutes into the 2nd half Jackson Davis-Iqbal unleashed a superb shot which flew past the Elton goalkeeper and bounced back out off the post but there were no Pennine players following up to tap it in and Elton were able to clear the lines. After 10 minutes an Elton forward took a fine shot towards the Pennine net and if I was a betting man I’d have put money on it sailing into the top corner but James Wynne managed to pull off a superb diving save that even David De Gea would have been proud of! Easily the save of the season so far! 15 minutes gone and although there had lots of pressure by Pennine Red keeping Elton on the back foot it was Elton who scored with a counter attack and totally against the run of play (Pennine Red 0-3 Elton SC Tigers). It was just another 2 minutes before Elton scored their 4th goal when the Pennine defence failed to clear the ball and it was blasted past James Wynne who stood no chance! (Pennine Red 0-4 Elton SC Tigers). In the dying minutes both Douglas Poole and Jackson Davis-Iqbal had good scoring opportunities but it just wasn’t to be. Overall, it was a good effort against a team from a higher division. If our chances had bounced in off the post instead of bouncing out and had we been a little more disciplined in defence then the outcome could have been very different indeed! Douglas Poole was awarded man of the match. Opponent: Unsworth JFC Predators Date: 7th December 2013 Venue: Home Result: Won 3-1 Match report Unsworth kicked off, followed by some early pressing from Pennine. A Pennine corner found Ellie Clarkson who shot way over the Unsworth goal. A great effort by Tyler Carberry was blocked then picked up by Charlie Atkinson who showed great dribbling skills, sending a beauty of a shot right into the top right hand corner of the Unsworth net (Pennine 1-0 Unsworth). Unsworth kicked off , and some good midfield work from Pennine found Tyler Carberry free, who produced a 20 yard rocket which flew past the hapless Unsworth goal (Pennine 2-0 Unsworth)

Page | 19

Unsworth kicked off again. Jackson Davis-Iqbal sent a lovely pass down the right hand side picking out Tyler Carberry who passed to Ellie Clarkson who then shot wide. More pressure from Pennine saw some great work on the left by Charlie Atkinson and Jackson Davis-Iqbal but was cancelled out by some stout Unsworth defending. Tom Watson was at the centre of things in defence when Unsworth pressed into the Pennine last third, with Joseph Trinnaman also strong, clearing the line. 15 minutes gone and Pennine make three substitutions - Tyler Carberry, TomWatson and Ellie Clarkson off, Dan Bentham , Will Strudwick and Nathaniel Hughes on. 20 minutes in and Unsworth began to get stronger, with Luke Trinnamen called upon to make a great clearance. More pressure from Unsworth created some panic in the Pennine box, with an Unsworth shot on goal hitting the Pennine crossbar. Pennine failed to clear, and the ball was pounced on by the Unsworth forward who shot, bringing a superb save from James Wynne. Unsworth now grew in confidence, making more and more forays into the Pennine last third, with Joseph and Luke Trinnamen forced to make some excellent defensive tackles. An Unsworth corner was cleared, and the ball found Luke Trinnamen in midfield - a nifty dribble wrongfooting an Unsworth defender was followed by a beautiful looping shot into the Unsworth net (Pennine 3-0 Unsworth). Unsworth kicked off for the third time - Pennine quickly took control, with Daniel Bentham presenting a brilliant pass to Tyler Carberry who shot agonisingly wide of the Unsworth goal. Unsworth showed some determination late on, but the attacks on the Pennine goal brought some strong tackling from Joe Trinnamen. The whistle for the end of the 1st half sounded. 2nd Half Pennine kicked off the 2nd half, and within 2 minutes a shot by Douglas Poole hits the Unsworth post. Some nice football on the right by Daniel Bentham presented another shooting opportunity which Dan failed to convert, sending the ball over the Unsworth net. The Unsworth goalkick went straight to Douglas Poole who shot instinctively towards the Unsworth goal, well saved by the goalie. The goalies kick out was again picked up by the Pennine midfield, with Tom Watson striking a powerful shot goalwards which was well saved by the Unsworth goalkeeper. 15 minutes in and Pennine maintained the effort they showed in the first half - a Pennine corner was met with a wonderful header by Tom Watson, sending the ball narrowly wide of the Unsworth right hand post. Unsworth did break free on occasion to push deep into the Pennine half, but Joseph Trinnamen began to ooze confidence in defence, with some great clearances and tackles which eased the pressure. The ball fell to Douglas Poole who launched a fierce shot well saved by the Unsworth keeper.

Page | 20

Charlie Atkinson on for Dan Bentham, with Charlie sending a wonderful pass to Tyler Carberry who shot at goal, saved by the goalie, and back out to Tyler who shot again, only to be saved again by the in-form Unsworth keeper. More pressure from Pennine produced two corners, but neither produced a chance on goal. Ellie Clarkson off for Jackson Davis-Iqbal Unsworth pressed on, driving past the Pennine midfield, finding an Unsworth striker who shot fiercely at the Pennine goal bringing another super save from James Wynne. Midway through the 2nd half, and Charlie Atkinson surged forward with the ball, was tripped and Pennine were awarded a free kick which was sent over the bar. Luke Trinnamen was substituted for Will Strudwick. Unsworth did not give up, pushing forward again, with Nathanial Hughes called upon to clear. Pennine picked up the ball in midfield and a high ball into the Unsworth goal area was met by Will Strudwick’s' head but well saved by the Unsworth goalie. Another round of substitutions followed - Dougie Poole off, Ellie Clarkson on. Unsworth piled on the pressure, with Charlie Atkinson coming back from midfield to assist his defence with great strength and determination.. An Unsworth corner was bravely headed away by Nathaniel Hughes, but picked up again by Unsworth who shot at goal - it looked like an easy save for James Wynne but the ball squirmed awkwardly through his arms and ended up tamely over the line (Pennine 3-1 Unsworth). The last minutes of the match saw little in the way of opportunity and the game finished 3 1 to Pennine. It was a great team effort and Pennine were well worth the 3 points. Opponent: Radcliffe Borough Bulls Date: 14th December 2013 Venue: Away Result: Lost 0-1 Match report Our opponents are flying high in the league and had beaten us 5-0 in our previous meeting so we expected a very tough match today. 5 minutes into the 1st half saw a looping shot from Tyler Carberry which eluded the Radcliffe goalkeeper but unfortunately it didn’t dip early enough and ended up just over the crossbar. Just 2 minutes later and a great move down the right by Jackson Davis-Iqbal but unfortunately his goalbound shot wasn’t powerful enough to beat the Radcliffe goalkeeper. Almost immediately Radcliffe had their 1st real attack with a cross into the danger area and they scored (Radcliffe Borough Bulls 1-0 Pennine Red). 12 minutes gone and Radcliffe broke through the midfield, Daniel Bentham struggled to match the pace of the advancing Radcliffe striker but fortunately the Pennine goalkeeper, James Wynne, was alert to the danger and managed to kick the ball away. Some excellent passing and movement by Pennine on 17 minutes opened up an opportunity but Douglas Poole’s shot was well saved by the Radcliffe goalkeeper. 18 minutes and Pennine made 2 substitutions, Will Strudwick and Ellie Clarkson on for Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Daniel Page | 21

Bentham. 19 minutes and another Pennine attack following some very skilful play by Tyler Carberry but his shot went agonisingly wide past the far post. For the rest of the half both teams pretty much cancelled each other out in terms of open play and possession but neither side had any clear cut chances. Pennine made 2 half time substitutions with Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Daniel Bentham back on in place of Charlie Atkinson and Tom Watson. Pennine kicked off the 2 nd half and went immediately into the offensive with shots from both Tyler Carberry and Jackson Davis-Iqbal but to no avail. 8 minutes and Tyler Carberry found himself one on one with the Radcliffe goalkeeper who managed to block Tyler’s shot and sent it out for a corner. For the previous 10 minutes or so there has been wave after wave of Pennine attack but the Radcliffe defence & goalkeeper have managed to keep the ball out of their net! 20 minutes and another fine shot by Jackson Davis-Iqbal saved by the Radcliffe goalkeeper. Tyler Carberry pounced on the rebound but shot just wide of the post. 21 minutes and Daniel Bentham also had a fine shot saved by the Radcliffe goalkeeper. Just 2 minutes of the match remaining and with all their attacking play in this match Pennine surely deserved an equaliser, Tyler Carberry broke down the right flank following some excellent work by Daniel Bentham, Tyler crossed the ball into the danger area with Charlie Atkinson there to meet it right in front of goal but Charlie’s thunderbolt shot just cleared the crossbar. A fine team performance and definitely deserved more from it. Daniel Bentham was awarded man of the match and it’s now a well earned rest for the team during the Christmas break. Opponent: Westbury Sports Club Wolves Date: 18th January 2014 Venue: Away Result: Won 0-5 Match report From the kick off, a through ball from Joe Trinnaman found Jackson Davis-Iqbal whose shot at goal was saved but Jackson followed up with a close range shot past the Westbury keeper. A welcome early goal for Pennine! Westbury 0 - Pennine 1 Westbury kicked off, but failed to control the ball in midfield - Pennine capitalised , winning the ball and surging forward. Three attempts on goal by Pennine from Jackson Davis-Iqbal, and Charlie Atkinson caused chaos in the Westbury defence, resulting in an own goal but the credit given to Charlie Atkinson. Westbury 0 - Pennine 2

Page | 22

The two early goals gave Pennine a great cushion. From the kick off, Westbury again lost possession, and a nice pass from the left to Jackson Davis-Iqbal saw his shot goalwards well saved by the Westbury keeper. More pressure from Pennine, and a ball from midfield was picked up by Tyler Carberry who drove forward with great conviction and let fly a powerful shot only to be pushed past the Westbury goal - a fine save from the goalie. The resultant corner went out-of-play. The Westbury keeper’s goal-kick reached Pennine's last third - Joe Trinnaman again came to the rescue, clearing the ball and finding Tyler Carberry on the right hand side. Tyler surged forward again, getting the upper hand against a weak Westbury defence and forcing a corner which was cleared by the nervous Westbury defence who now looked shell shocked. A Charlie Atkinson shot was well saved by the keeper. Pennine sent on Elle Clarkson for Nathaniel Hughes. Westbury now found some confidence, and some neat passing saw Westbury move into the Pennine goal area, and a shot from a Westbury forward saw James Wynne pull off a fine save. Joe Trinnaman was again strong in defence following more pressure from Westbury - the rest of the Pennine defence seemed to lose shape and control. Doug Poole stepped up to calm the defensive nerves, picking up the loose ball, then being brought down - play was waved on, and a Westbury shot was again saved by James Wynne who looked strong and confident. The Westbury corner was met strongly by Ellie Clarkson who was having a fine game, showing great determination by clearing with both head and feet. Dan Bentham picked up the ball, shooting goalwards which was saved by the Westbury keeper. Half time score : Westbury 0 - Pennine 2 2nd Half Westbury kicked off, and began to show some better possession and passing control - Ellie Clarkson was again called upon to clear. Pennine looked like they were taking their foot off the gas, pulling out of some 50-50 tackles and showing signs of fatigue. Will Strudwick and Jackson Davis-Iqbal were substituted for Nathaniel Hughes and Doug Poole to bring back some stability and control in defence and midfield. Nathaniel Hughes’ impact was immediate, riding a strong tackle and sending a super pass to Tyler Carberry who sent a great ball past the hapless Westbury keeper - a really great goal. Westbury 0 - Pennine 3 Westbury kicked off , but again lost possession - Pennine seemed to pick-up the pace having lost some ground and confidence midway through the first half. Some nicely worked passing and interplay found Dan Bentham who sent a great ball into the Westbury goal area which was only partially cleared by the Westbury defence. Pennine surged forward in numbers Nathaniel Hughes picked up a loose ball and had the confidence to produce a 20 yard run goalwards, slotting a fine goal past the stranded Westbury goalkeeper. Westbury 0 - Pennine 4 Page | 23

Pennine now looked unstoppable, winning the majority of loose balls in midfield and seeking out more goals. Doug Poole and Nathaniel Hughes again giving really gutsy performances - a Dan Bantham shot went very close, just shading the Westbury crossbar. The Westbury goalkick went straight back to Dan who shot at goal again - two more attempts in quick succession from Tyler Carberry and Dan Bantham resulted in a well deserved goal for Dan. Westbury 0 - Pennine 5 The last 5 minutes of the game brought some late pressure from Westbury and in the final minute with almost the last kick of the game a Westbury shot brought another fine save from James Wynne. The final whistle sounded - a really strong performance from Pennine this week, with every player playing their part in what was an entertaining game with plenty of goals. Well done Pennine!!

Final Whistle : Westbury 0 - Pennine 5 MOTM : Ellie Clarkson - a towering performance!! Opponent: Radcliffe Borough Crusaders Date: 8th February 2014 Venue: Home Result: Won 2-1 Match report This was going to be a very tough test for Pennine Red for 3 reasons......a) We were missing 3 key players (Jackson Davis-Iqbal, Charlie Atkinson & Daniel Bentham), b) The weather was awful and with the pitch being very heavy and having no substitutes it was going to be very tiring for the 9 players on the pitch and c) we were playing a team who were top of the league and currently the only unbeaten team in this league! Radcliffe Borough Crusaders won the toss and opted for the advantage of playing with the strong wind behind them. The first 5 minutes saw both teams passing the ball around well and trying to gain advantage which fell to Radcliffe Borough Crusaders when they were awarded a free kick just outside the Pennine penalty area. The free kick was blocked resulting in a scramble but the ball found it’s way into the Pennine net (Pennine Red 0-1 Radcliffe Borough Crusaders). Again both teams were passing well but unable to penetrate past each others defences but after 15 minutes a half chance came to Joseph Trinnaman but his shot on goal rebounded off Dougie Poole, taking the sting out of it, and into the goalkeepers hands. The remainder of this first half saw some good football played in difficult conditions but I guess with Page | 24

Radcliffe Borough Crusaders having a very strong wind behind their backs they must have hoped to be going into half time with more than a one goal lead. The second half kicked off and both Andy & myself agreed that we had a great chance of winning this match, not just because we had the wind behind us, but we felt that Pennine played the better football in the first half and if they could keep up that momentum as well as maintaining good stamina then there was every chance of a win. 10 minutes into the second half and Ellie Clarkson shot at goal, the wind held the ball in the air and it looked like it was going to loop just under the crossbar for a goal but the Radcliffe goalkeeper just got a hand to it and it was a fine save. The resulting corner by Tyler Carberry was well directed into the Radcliffe penalty area but the Radcliffe goalkeeper caught it before any Pennine player could get near it. Just a few minutes later and Pennine goalkeeper, James Wynne, pulled off a brilliant save by turning the ball onto the post from a fierce shot by the Radcliffe striker. Pennine very quickly turned this into an attack with Dougie Poole powering down the right flank, turning inside the defender and unleashing a powerful shot on target but the wind caught a hold of it and it hit the crossbar. 15 minutes gone and a defensive clearance by Tom Watson was carried by the wind, headed by Dougie Poole into the path of the advancing Tyler Carberry who didn’t hesitate in slotting the ball past the Radcliffe goalkeeper for the equaliser (Pennine Red 1-1 Radcliffe Borough Crusaders). The move was reminiscent of Manchester United in the early-mid 90’s when they would turn defence into attack and within 3 moves find the back of the net.....just superb! There was sheer delight by everyone because we felt Pennine were the stronger team and there was no reason why they couldn’t go on to win this match and I think this was also when one of our missing players, Daniel Bentham, arrived so he was immediately brought on in place of Will Strudwick who’d had a good game but we needed some fresh legs on the pitch. The Pennine players obviously felt they go on to win this match because you could see the determination on their faces and within a minute Pennine were on the attack again via Tyler Carberry but his shot just went agonisingly past the post. Just 1 minute later and Ellie Clarkson scored a great goal but unfortunately I missed the build up as I was busy writing these notes! The final 13 minutes or so saw some very strong defending by Nathaniel Hughes, Tom Watson, Luke Trinnaman and Joseph Trinnaman who all had a fine game today. Whenever Pennine had the opportunity to attack Tom Watson was very quick to get himself up with the action but he was ordered to stay back in defence in order to preserve our lead and when the final whistle was blown, the delight on the faces of the Pennine players was a joy

Page | 25

to see! This was a monumental win which has now taken us up to third place and just 4 points behind the leaders although many teams have games in hand over us. After his arrival part way through the second half, Daniel Bentham gave his all, Will Strudwick played very well by getting in some important tackles and passing the ball very well, Tyler Carberry was committed as always and his 10th goal of the season sees him at the top of the score table just 2 ahead of Jackson Davis-Iqbal. Dougie Poole was as solid and determined as ever. A nice gesture by the Radcliffe coaching staff at the end of the match picking out Pennine goalkeeper, James Wynne, by saying that his superb save kept us in the match but man of the match was awarded, for the 2nd successive time, to Ellie Clarkson who had been superb today! Not only for scoring the winning goal but also because she had been fully committed in all areas of the pitch whether it was defending or attacking. Well done to everybody! Opponent: Whitworth Valley Date: 1st March 2014 Venue: Away Result: Lost 1-4 Match report This was always going to be a tough match as three of our players were unavailable for this fixture - Ellie Clarkson, Doug Poole & Nathanial Hughes. Pennine were to have to dig in with only a bare 9, no substitutions. First Half Whitworth kicked off having won the toss. An early strong run by Tyler Carberry was quickly dealt with by Whitworth, who broke forwards, winning a corner which was met by Whitworth head straight into the Pennine net giving James Wynne no chance. Whitworth 1 - Pennine 0 Pennine kicked off with some nice interplay between Charlie Atkinson and Tyler Carberry on the right hand side. However, Pennine lost the ball far too much, which meant there were far too many incursions by Whitworth into the Pennine half. Whitworth were playing much the better football, with Pennine not picking up players and failing to deal with the Whitworth attack far too often. Whitworth were always first to any loose ball which invariably meant more and more pressure on the beleaguered Pennine defence. A Whitworth corner was hacked away, but the ball fell again to Whitworth who moved forward again in numbers, with at least two Whitworth attackers free to receive any successful pass. Pennine weathered the Whitworth pressure which seemed to steady their nerves. A Pennine break on the right hand side from Tyler Carberry saw his shot just whistle past the Whitworth goalpost. Another Pennine attack brought a corner which was met with a strong header from Dan Bantham but went wide of the post. More good passing play from Page | 26

Whitworth again showed up Pennine deficiencies in midfield and defence .However, Pennine ended the first half strongly, with a slick pass from Tyler Carberry to Jackson DavisIqbal who shot wide of the Whitworth goalpost. The whistle for the end of the first half sounded - Pennine would need to play much better and up their game in the second half!! Second Half Pennine duly kicked off - a good period of possession followed, with some great work down the left from Charlie Atkinson, passing neatly to Will Strudwick whose shot went wide. Pennine began to show better possession and link-up play - a nice bit of football between Will Strudwick and Jackson Davis-Iqbal on the left hand side should have found a Pennine attacker but went out of play. Pennine gained more of the ball in midfield, with Charlie Atkinson showing some great determination and willingness to chase loose balls. Pennine however did not learn the lessons from the first half, leaving Whitworth's forwards free to move unmarked into the Pennine last third on far too many occasions. Pennine looked tired, but showed good spirit to strike a series of shots at the Whitworth goal from Luke Trinnaman, Tyler Carberry and Charlie Atkinson, but all were wide of the mark or well blocked by the Whitworth defence. Luke Trinnaman was called upon to break down two good Whitworth attacks with some strong clearances. However, the ball was picked up by the Whitworth midfield and a through pass found a Whitworth attacker unmarked in the final third - a shot went passed James Wynne who bravely tried to save but it was in vain Whitworth score. Whitworth 2 - Pennine 0 Midway through the 2nd half and Whitworth showed no signs of tiring, using their substitutes to good effect. Pennine looked jaded, having no subs to call upon. Whitworth broke again, and a shot was well saved by James Wynne. The keepers kick found Dan Bentham who passed quickly to Jackson Davis -Iqbal - Jackson went on a great solo run, dribbling passed two Whitworth defenders and slotting the ball confidently past the Whitworth keeper. Whitworth 2 - Pennine 1 Whitworth broke free again from the kick-off, and a nice pass found a lone attacker upfront, who sent a nicely angled shot passed James Wynne. Again poor defending cost Pennine dear. Whitworth 3 - Pennine 1 The last few minutes ticked away - Pennine won a free-kick in Whitworth's last third - a shot at goal was well saved .Whitworth surged forward again, also winning a free-kick, and the shot at goal brought a fantastic save by James Wynne. Pennine made one final run forward, with a good attack down the left hand side finding Will Strudwick whose shot went straight Page | 27

to the Whitworth keeper. A final push from Whitworth left an attacker free once more, his shot passing through the Pennine keeper's legs for a fourth goal. Final Whistle : Whitworth 4 - Pennine 1

This was a poor performance from Pennine who lacked awareness at the back and desire to win tackles. The Man of the Match was a hard choice - Tyler Carberry put in real shift, creating chances and tracking back when required. However, the manager awarded the MOTM award to James Wynne who pulled off some great saves and stopped mores goals adding to Whitworth's tally. MOTM : James Wynne. Opponent: Chadderton Park Dragons Date: 8th March 2014 (from 11th January 2013) Venue: Home Result: Won 2-0 Match report We were almost back to full strength today with the return of Nathaniel Hughes, Douglas Poole and Ellie Clarkson but we were missing Will Strudwick. From the kick-off Pennine were in attack mode and playing some very positive football with good passing & movement and won a corner after 3 minutes which was taken by Tyler Carberry. Tyler crossed the ball into the danger area and it was crying out to be headed by an attacker but the Chadderton defence managed to clear the ball from danger. Just a minute later and great work led to Daniel Bentham breaking through from midfield with the Chadderton defence backing off which enabled Dan to advance on goal but his shot was just wide. 5 minutes and a fierce shot on target by Jackson Davis-Iqbal was fingertipped by the Chadderton goalkeeper onto the crossbar which bounced out and was cleared by the Chadderton defence. Full marks to the Chadderton goalkeeper for such a fine save! 10 minutes played with constant attacking play by Pennine and Charlie Atkinson found the ball at his feet just outside the penalty area, he began to run at the defence weaving in and out through 3 defenders towards goal but was tripped inside the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty. Up stepped Tyler Carberry and calmly slotted the ball home! (Pennine Red 1-0 Chadderton Park Dragons). 12 minutes and once again fine work in midfield created a chance for Jackson Davis-Iqbal who scored a brilliant goal but the referee disallowed it because he judged the ball to have hit Jackson on the arm just before he unleashed his shot (unlucky Jackson but it was a great Page | 28

goal). Daniel Bentham and Tom Watson were substituted after 15 minutes by Nathaniel Hughes and Ellie Clarkson and just a minute later Charlie Atkinson forced a fine save by the Chadderton goalkeeper. There were several minutes of good attacking play by Pennine but they just couldn’t find the back of the net, most shots either went wide or saved by the goalkeeper and it was 22 minutes into the match when Chadderton Park went on the attack and ventured into the Pennine half for the first time, this was the extent of the pressure from Pennine. Anyway, the Chadderton Park attack was soon thwarted by Nathaniel Hughes, Joseph Trinnaman and Luke Trinnaman and Pennine were on the attack yet again but this too was thwarted by the Chadderton Park defence. Just a minute to half time and both Charlie Atkinson and Douglas Poole bossed the midfield again, putting Tyler Carberry through on goal but his shot was straight at the Chadderton goalkeeper! The half time whistle then blew. The second half was kicked off by Pennine and once again into the attack but there weren’t really any clear cut chances as the Chadderton Park midfield and defence had tightened up and seemed more organised than they were in the first half. This was pretty much the pattern for the first 15 minutes when the Pennine manager, Andy, decided to make a change. Off came Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Charlie Atkinson with Daniel Bentham and Tom Watson returning to the pitch. Tom Watson was immediately involved with the build up play and unleashed a fierce long range shot which crashed into the crossbar and was cleared from danger. It was a fantastic effort and really did deserve to hit the back of the net so Tom was very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet! Chadderton Park were now gaining confidence because, although they had enjoyed very little possession, they were only trailing by a single goal and it was like they sensed they could get something from this match which seemed to spur them on . Chadderton Park began to pass the ball with confidence and were winning more balls in midfield from where they were able to penetrate through to the Pennine defence. I think Andy, the Pennine manager, realised that some players were getting tired after all their hard work so on 23 minutes Douglas Poole and Tyler Carberry were replaced by Jackson Davis-Iqbal and Charlie Atkinson. Jackson Davis-Iqbal was straight into the action by breaking down the right wing and taking a shot on goal but it went just wide. 25 minutes played and our hearts were in our mouths as Chadderton Park went on the offensive a couple of times and Pennine keeper, James Wynne, was there to save the day yet again! Literally a minute to go and a fine through ball from Daniel Bentham found Jackson DavisIqbal advancing towards goal but his shot was finely saved by the Chadderton goalkeeper. I must have missed a substitution because Douglas Poole & Tyler Carberry were back on the pitch and Dougie had a shot saved by the keeper with Tyler putting the rebound just wide. Seconds later and Tyler Carberry played a delightful ball through to Daniel Bentham who Page | 29

calmly stroked the ball into the far corner to seal the win for Pennine! (Pennine Red 2-0 Chadderton Park Dragons). Man of the match today was Tyler Carberry! Opponent: Unsworth JFC Predators Date: 15th March 2014 (From 14th September 2013) Venue: Away Result: Won 2-6 Match report As the Manager, Andy Watson, was away for the weekend, the team management was the responsibility of Javed Iqbal (Jackson’s Dad) and Terry Wynne (James’s Dad). Many thanks to Ged Bentham for penning today’s match report! A sense of anticipation filled the Unsworth air as the Pennine Management team took the under 11s through their final pre-match preparations. The team were in confident mood following previous outings against Unsworth, the young Douglas Poole captured the mood with his call to arms, ‘Only a win will do lads!!’. As Tyler Carberry and Jackson Davis-Iqbal kicked the game into action, Pennine slipped into their customary formation of 1-3-3-2, with James Wynne controlling matters from the goal mouth. Pennine’s confident mood was reflected in their lovely ‘footy’, pass after pass found its target with some spell binding link play. Unfortunately the Pennine pressure could not be converted into goals and a rare break from Unsworth led to a corner being converted by Unsworth’s number 5; 1-0. Pennine showed great character in their immediate response as Tyler stepped inside a desperate Unsworth tackle before driving the ball home; 1-1. The crowd woke from their slumber and roared with delight ’GOOOOAAAL!!!!’. A series of further chances followed with Jackson and Tyler linking like Van Persie and Rooney. (but better….) Tyler once again converted his opportunities with a shot across goal finding the back of the net leaving the Unsworth goal keeper scratching his head; 1-2. The management team decided upon a couple of early tactical changes as Nathaniel Hughes and Ellie Clarkson entered the fray for Daniel Bentham and Tom Watson. As Pennine took control of the game Unsworth’s efforts on goal were in rare supply. Eventually the pressure became too much for Unsworth and a pin point accurate corner from Tyler was accidentally turned into the Unsworth net by one of there own defenders but the full credit was given to Tyler for his outstanding hatrick;1-3. This calamity momentarily spurred Unsworth into action, fortunately the Pennine defence of Nathaniel Hughes, Luke Trinnaman and Joseph Trinnaman were not buckling and held their line with a combination of bone jarring tackles and sweeping passes. Douglas Poole, Ellie Clarkson and Charlie Atkinson created the space and time to run the legs off the Unsworth midfield, demonstrating a level of skill and guile rarely seen before on the fields of Unsworth. Despite the festival of football unfolding before them the crowd became unsettled as they demanded more goals. Pennine responded as Ellie sliced open the Unsworth defence with a precision pass that Jackson despatched into the back of the net with clinical accuracy; 1-4.

The crowd purred with delight as Pennine ran through their full repertoire of flicks and tricks resulting in Charlie Atkinson hammering home a 50 metre pile driver from his own half; 1-5. Not for the last time today, James was required to put his body on the line and deliver a save of unparalleled quality to keep out a plucky break by Unsworth. Despite the heroics of the Pennine goal keeper he could not keep out Unsworth’s second as it was nodded home from a clever corner;2-5. (Half time) Pennine’s management team had their work cut out to settle nerves and keep the Pennine team playing their open brand of football. Daniel had slotted into the back line and continued to work well as he broke forward and combined well with midfield. Despite Pennine’s efforts Unsworth continued to pose a threat with James being forced into one acrobatic save after another. Pennine went agonisingly close through Joseph Trinnaman as his shot drifted just wide. At this stage Pennine appeared content to see the match out and secure a win, unfortunately Unsworth had not read the same script and continued to battle for a 3rd goal that would have had Pennine nerves jangling. A tactical stalemate ensued with neither team able to break the deadlock. Slowly but surely Pennine wrestled control of the game away from Unsworth and delivered a series of spellbinding inter-plays. The reintroduction of Nathaniel Hughes was the final straw for Unsworth, seeing Nathaniel’s strength and determination move into midfield, Unsworth physically wilted. A final flurry from Pennine resulted in a well-deserved goal for Jackson as he broke from his own half and left the goalkeeper clasping at thin air; 2-6. Pennine saw out the remaining moments with the traveling faithful in buoyant mood. As Man of the Match, Douglas Poole, was replaced by Ellie the crowd broke into cheers in recognition of a ‘Galactico’ Poole performance.

Opponent: Woodbank Black Date: 22nd March 2014 Venue: Away Result: Lost 0-6 Match report Two of our established defenders, Luke & Joseph Trinnaman, were missing from the lineup today and as we were up against one of the top teams in the division we knew we were in for a rough ride! After only 5 minutes some neat first time passing in midfield resulted in Woodbank drawing first blood with a first time shot perfectly executed past the Pennine goalkeeper, James Wynne, and into the far corner of the net (Woodbank Black 1-0 Pennine Red). Pennine tried to penetrate into the Woodbank half many times during the next 5 minutes or so but the well organised Woodbank midfield and defence halted the attacks and after 12 minutes Pennine found themselves 2-0 down when James Wynne pulled off a great save but the Woodbank attacker was more alert to the loose ball than the Pennine defence and slotted the ball past a helpless James Wynne (Woodbank Black 2-0 Pennine Red). Page | 31

15 minutes and some great work in defence by Tom Watson, Daniel Bentham and Nathaniel Hughes resulted in a break down the right flank with some lovely interplay between Jackson Daniel-Iqbal and Charlie Atkinson but Charlie was quickly surrounded by Woodbank defenders and just couldn’t get the ball across to Tyler Carberry who was quickly advancing into the Woodbank penalty area. 18 minutes and a fine cross over the top to Tyler Carberry in the Woodbank penalty area again but was brilliantly tackled just as he was about to shoot on goal. Substitution, Will Strudwick on for Daniel Bentham. 20 minutes gone and Pennine had their first shot on goal following a fine pass from Ellie Clarkson in midfield to Jackson Davis-Iqbal who then laid the ball off to Douglas Poole but Dougie’s shot was blocked by the Woodbank keeper and was then quick enough to gather the ball at Tyler Carberry’s feet before he could tap it in. 24 minutes and Woodbank caught us on the break , mounting there own counter-attack but Pennine keeper, James Wynne, was alert and pulled off a magnificent diving save to push the goalward bound ball onto the post. An advancing Woodbank attacker blasted the rebound back at goal but another brilliant save from James Wynne! 28 minutes, Tyler Carberry forced a fine save by the Woodbank keeper with the ball going out for a Pennine corner which Tyler took. Tyler fired the corner into the danger zone and Will Strudwick flicked it on with his head but no other Pennine players were attacking the danger zone and Woodbank managed to clear their lines. Half time. 3 minutes into the second half and some wonderful football by Woodbank resulted in their third goal and some of the Pennine players looked at each other wondering what had just happened! (Woodbank Black 3-0 Pennine Red). Pennine were trying their best to mount an attack but the Woodbank team were so well organised and were able to halt the attacks and quickly mount their own. 10 minutes and several Woodbank players mounted a strong attack through the midfield and quickly found themselves entering the Pennine penalty area, the Woodbank attacker turned inside Daniel Bentham and fired a fierce shot at goal but once again James Wynne made a brilliant save! 5 minutes later James Wynne was called upon again and managed to keep the ball out of the net. At this point, most of the Pennine spectators were wondering what had happened to our midfield and defence because they were getting well & truly bossed by Woodbank! 19 minutes and Woodbank carved through the Pennine defence once again like a hot knife through butter but once again James Wynne made a great save putting the ball out for a corner. Woodbank took the corner but not a single Pennine defender made any attempt to clear it and the ball was flicked past James (Woodbank Black 4-0 Pennine Red). Just 2 minutes later and exactly the same scenario with Woodbank freely carving through the

Pennine defence resulting in their fifth goal, James Wynne had no chance! (Woodbank Black 5-0 Pennine Red). Just 5 minutes of the match remaining and Douglas Poole found himself in the Woodbank penalty area with the ball but the Woodbank keeper was quick to smother Dougie’s shot and the ball was cleared. Pennine mounted another attack with some fine work through the midfield via Charlie Atkinson and Tyler Carberry which resulted in Pennine being awarded a free kick just outside the Woodbank penalty area. Woodbank organised a wall of players to prevent the direct shot on goal so Tyler Carberry passed it sideways to Jackson Daniel-Iqbal who tried to chip the ball towards the far top corner of the net but it was headed out by a Woodbank defender as far as Charlie Atkinson, on the edge of the penalty area, who immediately smashed it against the crossbar and it was cleared. Final minute of the game and Woodbank mounted a counter-attack forcing another diving save from James Wynne but once again, the Woodbank attackers were more alert than the Pennine defence and blasted the ball past a helpless James Wynne. (Final score Woodbank Black 6-0 Pennine Red). In summary, Pennine tried really hard today but they were up against, based on what I have seen this season, the best team in the division! Woodbank were superior in every department and full credit to them and their coaching staff. Although the Pennine Keeper, James Wynne, conceded 6 goals today there was no hesitation in awarding him man of the match because he was outstanding and wasn’t supported well enough by his defenders. The brilliant saves he made prevented Woodbank from scoring well into double figures!
