WHERE: PENN HEART & VASCULAR PAVILION, 1ST FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM This year’s Cultural Competence Conference focuses on increasing health care providers’ knowledge about health technologies that can assist minority communities in reducing preventable diseases, managing chronic diseases, and locating vital community resources, along with ways to remove barriers to access. Our keynote speaker is Brian Wells, MBA, associate vice president of Health Technology and Academic Computing at Penn Medicine. His morning keynote address, “Can Health Technology Help Close the Gaps in Health Equity?” will examine the importance and benefits of using technology to increase access to health care; explores several technologies now in place at Penn Medicine, including Apple HealthKit, wearable devices, wireless pill bottles, and EMR integration; and explains challenges to the adoption of technology. The centerpiece of the afternoon session is the iHealth Technology Café, during which six health technology innovators/leaders profile technological solutions that are both affordable and accessible. Technology platforms include mobile apps, social media, telemedicine, and a wearable computer device. An Open Micsegment concludes the café. Closing the conference is a presentation by Michael Baime, MD, director of the Penn Program for Mindfulness, titled “Empathy: Reclaiming the Human Connection in a Technology-driven Culture.” Dr. Baime will discuss how (continued on back)
