MLK DAY CELEBRATION REMEMBERS THE RICH CONTRIBUTIONS AND IMPACTS MADE ON OUR SOCIETY For some, 2016 marks a time of celebration and progress, while for others it is a time of uncertainty. In the early days of the New Year, the Pennsylvania Hospital Culture Competence Committee sponsored the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Celebration,” to honor the life and legacy of Rev., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fifty years after Dr. King’s speech to the Medical Committee for Human Rights in 1966, we’re taking the time to reflect on how his legacy can be used to eliminate the health care disparities that still persist among the underserved and underrepresented in our nation today. This year’s event focused specifically on healthcare justice and equality for everyone – regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation. “This year’s topic, “Healthcare Justice and Equality for All,” was momentous to all of our participants, and even more so for those who work in the healthcare system,” said Odinae Fisher, a residency coordinator and member of the Culture Competence Committee. “All of those in attendance were wholeheartedly challenged to become the change they wish to see.” “The Martin Luther King Day of Service celebration provides Pennsylvania Hospital the opportunity to bring members of our organization and our community together,” said Clinical Director of Nursing, Angel McCullough, MSN, MBA, CCRN, NEA-BC. “It’s moments like these that allow us to reflect on the great progress our nation has made / / / Continued on page 2
