MLK DAY CELEBRATION REMEMBERS THE RICH CONTRIBUTIONS AND IMPACTS MADE ON OUR SOCIETY For some, 2016 marks a time of celebration and progress, while for others it is a time of uncertainty. In the early days of the New Year, the Pennsylvania Hospital Culture Competence Committee sponsored the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Celebration,” to honor the life and legacy of Rev., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fifty years after Dr. King’s speech to the Medical Committee for Human Rights in 1966, we’re taking the time to reflect on how his legacy can be used to eliminate the health care disparities that still persist among the underserved and underrepresented in our nation today.

This year’s event focused specifically on healthcare justice and equality for everyone – regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation.

“This year’s topic, “Healthcare Justice and Equality for All,” was momentous to all of our participants, and even more so for those who work in the healthcare system,” said Odinae Fisher, a residency coordinator and member of the Culture Competence Committee. “All of those in attendance were wholeheartedly challenged to become the change they wish to see.”

toward unifying people of all ethnicities, but also reminds us that our work is not yet done.”

Open to both hospital employees and surrounding community members, the event featured a spoken word performance from Jamillah Muhammad, a Patient Care Technician, musical performances by the University of Pennsylvania Jazz Ensemble and Tracy King, an OR Technician, accompanied by Jeff MacIntyre from Facilities Services. Jaya Aysola, MD, an assistant professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and associate director of Institutional Operations for Health Equity and Inclusion, delivered the keynote address on health care justice.

Aysola’s address focused on the injustices in our health care systems, from access to care to the challenges associated with ensuring that all patients receive unbiased treatment. Specifically, she noted, patients with tattoos are often judged before a conversation with administration or a healthcare provider is even had, which can negatively impact a patient’s care. This type of bias or discrimination can often be subconscious, she noted. Aligning with Dr. King’s beliefs that all people should be treated fairly and equally, Aysola issued a call to action for health care professionals – and citizens of the world – to pause and think about how they can consciously prevent and overcome these innate tendencies.

“The Annual MLK Day Celebration at Pennsylvania Hospital was again a success,” said Carolyn Griggs, assistant to the Chairman of the department of Medicine. “This year’s theme left me with thoughts of needing change for betterment of society.” Griggs remarked that the celebration reminded her of a quote from Dr. King himself.

“It was a great pleasure to see employees from many departments throughout our hospital come together to celebrate the talents that we have in our health system,” added McCullough. “On behalf of the entire Cultural Competence Committee, we thank everyone who supported this event, and look forward to hosting others throughout the year that uplift and celebrate the ‘Power of Diversity.’”

Heart Month Pulses at Pennsylvania Hospital February marks American Heart Month and Pennsylvania Hospital is celebrating alongside the American Heart Association and thousands of other organizations and individuals.

On February 17th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at PAH, the cardiovascular team will host a heart screening station – the Heart Health Awareness Table – in the cafeteria of the hospital where visitors and staff can come for a heart health screening and to learn more about their health. The station will include information on cardiovascular disease risk factors, precautions and general heart-health tips.

Penn Medicine’s Heart Age – Cardiac Risk Profiler, a quick and confidential health profiler that can help you to discover important information about your cardiovascular health, heart risk factors and your heart age, will also be back in action.

This simple, easy-to-use tool provides an easily downloadable or emailed report that helps individuals discover important cardiovascular health information, which patients are encouraged to bring to their next cardiovascular appointment.

The Heart Age Cardiac Risk Profiler is also available any time at PennMedicine.org/heart.

DISTINGUISHED NURSE CLINICIANS ACADEMY Spreading nursing excellence throughout PAH Nurses provide over 90 percent of frontline patient care, so it’s no surprise that the higher the quality of a facility’s nursing staff, the better its patient outcomes and the higher the patient satisfaction rates.

Pennsylvania Hospital has long encouraged and supported nursing excellence, and as a result, the hospital has recently received Magnet status, the highest level of recognition nursing services can receive.

Only 7 percent of health-care organizations in the nation hold this prestigious designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association.

Now, a new program — the Distinguished Nurse Clinician Academy — will help spread this level of clinical excellence throughout the Health System as well as into the practices of future nurses. Academy members will have exceptional clinical knowledge and interprofessional skills as well as a passion for their work. As Kathleen Burke, PhD, RN, corporate director of Nursing Professional Development and Innovation for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, noted, “It’s that nurse on the unit who everyone knows, the best of the best. The person who can negotiate and work with the team, gets things done, and loves working at bedside with patients.”

Denise Sees, BSN, RN, CMSRN, a clinical nurse level IV in the Day Stay unit was named an Inaugural Member of the Distinguished Nurse Clinician Academy from Pennsylvania Hospital.

The Distinguished Nurse Clinician Academy is based in part on Penn Medicine’s Academy of Master Clinicians, which John Glick, MD, president of the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute and VP of the Health System, helped create in 2013.

The call for nominations brought in 32 submissions from across Penn Medicine, and letters were filled with examples of these nurses’ dedication to patient care. “The persons nominated epitomize the call to nursing,” Glick said. “They are people you’d want to take care of you or a member of your family.”
