Nurses Week 2015 Recognizing the Best in Relationship-Based Care

Welcome Back!

On April 25th, members of the PAH School of Nursing Class of 1965 visited the hospital as part of their 50th class reunion.

The “Main Thing” is Our Focus …Our Journey is MAGNET! This is a very exciting time for nursing at Pennsylvania Hospital as we continue on our way to Magnet certification.

There is a four phase process to become an American Nurses Credential Center (ANCC) Magnet designated hospital: application, written documentation, site visit, and commission vote. Currently, PAH is in phase two and on June 1, Nursing will submit our Magnet Document to the ANCC. In addition to the submission of our patient outcomes, RN satisfaction, and patient satisfaction, there are 78 different examples of the nursing excellence that occurs every day at PAH in the Magnet Document. From December 2014 to April 2015, a team of writers diligently worked on completing the document to highlight the amazing work and improvements in care that have been accomplished over the last four years.

At the RBCA ceremony, guest speaker Garry Scheib, chief operating officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and executive director of HUP, shared the following impressive statistics which illuminated Nursing’s efforts towards achieving Magnet certification:

PAH participated in the 2015 Philadelphia Science Festival’s Explorer Sunday as one of the stops on a free, self-guided tour through Old City and Society Hill called Discover the History of Philadelphia Science. For three hours on April 26, over 50 folks of all ages explored PAH’s historic Pine Building and grounds.

»» PAH Nursing outperformed national Magnet hospital benchmarks in all 11 domains. »» PAH has an 84 percent BSN rate which is 25 percent above the national benchmark. »» PAH has a 42 percent professional certification rate, which is 67 percent above the national benchmark. »» PAH was the first hospital in the health system to establish a Nursing Clinical Research Scholarship program.

Attendees, all honored to be part of Pennsylvania Hospital’s history, shared fascinating stories of life as a student at PAH in 1965. Here are a few highlights: »» Their classes were held in Harte Memorial building. »»The Pine building still had patient wards. »» Isolated tuberculosis patients were “isolated” only by curtains drawn around the bed. »» The hospital “turned blue” after dark meaning that the hospital was staffed with just nursing students led by a nursing supervisor.

14th Annual Patent Safety Fair

National Patient Safety Week was March 8 through 14 and on March 12, PAH hosted its 14th Annual Patient Safety Fair. Staff demonstrated their commitment to patient safety through week-long poster presentations in the Pine Basement which covering such topics as patient safety and effective communication, Day Stay quality and safety, and active shooter training for hospital staff.

Paving the Way to Change

This year marked a special year for the social work community at PAH and across the U.S. — the 60th Anniversary of National Social Work Month and the National Association of Social Workers — which was commemorated throughout the month of March. The goal during the month is to educate the public about how social workers have created and will continue to create major positive social changes and improve the lives of individuals and families.

Social workers at PAH embraced the 2015 theme “Social Work Paves the Way to Change.” When our patients and families are experiencing a change in their lives that requires making some adjustments, the social worker is there to guide patients and families through the process. Often a patient requires a transition to an additional health care facility upon discharge from the hospital.

It is the social worker who supports the patient and family by helping to identify appropriate facilities, explaining the transitional process, and navigating the complex world of health insurance. The expertise of the social worker also includes identifying and setting up home health services for patients. “The road that social workers help to pave is lined with every effort to make the patient experience to be as positive as possible,” said Anne Arnold, RN, MS, director of Clinical Resource Management.

Together We Can Make a Difference!

Hundreds gathered at The Diamond Club at Citizens Bank Park on March 20 for the Abramson Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital’s bi-annual fundraiser Together We Can. This year’s benefit raised $110,000, which will fund supportive care services, cancer research, community screenings and educational program for patients and families facing cancer.

Helping to Give Life a Second Chance

PAH showed its support of the Gift of Life Donor Program and Donate Life campaign by participating in the 20th Donor Dash and Blue & Green Day to raise funds and awareness to promote the critical need to increase the number of registered organ and tissue donors. Team Penn Medicine received the award for the largest registered team at the Donor Dash.

2nd Annual PAH Cribs for Kids Campaign a Success

The PAH Women’s Health Outreach team kicked off the second annual Cribs for Kids campaign last month. Cribs for Kids provides sleep education and a portable crib to families in need in the Greater Philadelphia area.

In addition to monetary donations, employees donated diapers, baby wipes, tissues, classroom supplies and children’s books to the Maternity Care Coalition.

“I wanted to express our gratitude to the many staff and teams that contributed to the Cribs for Kids campaign this year. We were able to exceed our goal by raising $2,808,” said Elizabeth Quigley, MSN, RNC, NEA-BC, nurse manager of the Intensive Care Nursery. “This money will be put to good use in the Philadelphia community, including our own patients who can benefit directly from the Cribs for Kids campaign. This year we had many units and departments collect for this cause. It was so heartwarming and we are incredibly grateful for everyone’s generous support of this important program!”

National Cancer Survivors Month at PAH — Ce l e b r at in g L ife a nd Ra i s in g Awa r en e s s All across the globe, people will gather on Sunday, June 7, to observe the 28th annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Dedicated to supporting cancer patients from diagnosis through active treatment and survivorship, the Abramson Cancer Center at PAH is, for the third year in a row, extending survivorship celebrations for patients, caregivers and staff throughout the month of June.

National Cancer Survivors Day brings patients, their loved ones and care providers together to recognize the cancer survivors in our communities and raise awareness of the ongoing challenges they face. Cancer survivors also have the chance to connect with other survivors and celebrate the milestones they’ve achieved.

It is also a time to recognize family members, friends, and health care professionals who have supported survivors along the way.
