And perhaps most importantly, the removal of DC-295 is ultimately about improving the lives of residents east of the Anacostia, and the potential benefits of removing the highway–better health outcomes, access to recreational space, connectivity, and more–far outweigh costs to out-of-district commuters. Wards 7 and 8 are home to 160,000 people–a fifth of DC’s population–who are all impacted daily by the highway’s presence.[45] In the 50-year lifespan of this project, the removal of the highway will benefit hundreds of thousands of DC residents.
