Spring 2016

In this issue: • Becoming Penny Brohn UK • Picnic for Penny • Supporting the NHS

New name matches mission Spring has finally sprung. Welcome to this latest edition of Connect, in which we invite you to get out into the fresh air; maybe pack a tasty, healthy picnic, and experience nature in all its glory. Inside, we proudly announce our new name, Penny Brohn UK, which reflects our growth into a national charity, delivering services to thousands of people throughout the UK. We know that millions of people are living with the impact of cancer. The number is rising and the NHS cannot support their needs alone. Using our 35 years’ pioneering experience, our mission is to help everyone to live as well as possible with cancer, whatever their circumstances. We thank and acknowledge the remarkable achievements of Walk the Walk founder, Nina Barough, CBE. Walk the Walk continue their exceptional support of us and our national programme. Such donations, alongside many individual’s dedicated fundraising, mean we can expand our services to places such as Jersey, and continue to launch exciting new initiatives.

We also thank our client, Jo Rogers for sharing her inspirational story for our Spring Appeal. She openly and honestly recounts her cancer experience, to raise vital funds and awareness of how we help people take back control of their lives following diagnosis. Finally, congratulations to everyone – bosses, their colleagues, donors, staff, volunteers and media – who helped make our first Bungee the Boss fundraiser a giant success. There were some nervous faces on the day, but everyone had a great time. Best wishes

Laura Kerby CEO

Reaching everyone in the UK We are excited to launch our new name – Penny Brohn UK. New research shows that around 352,000 people are diagnosed with cancer annually, and 2.5 million live with or beyond cancer in the UK; expected to be 4 million by 2030. The NHS alone is unable to support the many people living with the impact of cancer and we play a vital role in filling this gap. Our new name expresses our ambition to reach every UK adult with cancer and their families, with our 35-yearstrong innovative work. The goal – to give hope and ensure that everyone has the information and support to live as well as they can, before, during and after medical treatment.

Bristol: where it all began From our early days as the Bristol Cancer Help Centre, we have continued to lead the way with our powerful and life-affirming Bristol Whole Life Approach. We focus on every aspect of a person’s life including mind, body, spirit, emotions, diet, exercise and stress management. Our pioneering approach enables each individual to find the support they need to boost their immune system and improve their own health and wellbeing.

Giving in Memory Losing someone you love is very painful and everyone deals with it in their own way. Some find fundraising for a cause close to their loved one’s heart a positive way to commemorate their life. For some of our supporters, giving in memory is a special way to honour a family member or friend, and enables friends and family to unite to support our work. We are always humbled and thankful to our supporters for thinking of us at such a difficult time. We are often told that knowing they are making a difference to someone else living with cancer is a great source of comfort.

Leslie leads “sanctuary for the arts” It’s music to our ears that we have received over £15,000 from The Patsy Wood Trust to launch a wide-ranging arts programme, headed by our Lead Arts Therapist Leslie Bunt. Music therapy professor Leslie, who has built music and art into our services since the mid-80s, leads The Penny Brohn UK Creative Arts project to create a “sanctuary for the arts”. Plans include launching talks, exhibitions, and expanding music and arts therapies into more of our core services. Leslie said: “ The arts are fundamental to the search for one’s self. For cancer patients, as with any illness, the arts, listening to, making and communicating through music plays a crucial role. Creativity is at the root of Penny Brohn’s approach. Creative arts and arts therapies are integral to the charity and to a person’s health and wellbeing.” For more information, call 0303 3000118 or email info@pennybrohn.org.uk 5

Pioneering programme aids the NHS We’re overjoyed to be one of five UK organisations invited to join a cutting-edge team to improve the UK’s health and wellbeing. Penny Brohn UK has been chosen to inform the NHS England-funded Realising the Value initiative, which unites some of the country’s leading healthcare providers to find ways to help engage people in their health and self-care. We were chosen for the programme, which is part of NHS England’s Five Year Forward View,

because of our recognised expertise in promoting self-management, and will lead a best practice interest group. Our Trusts Manager Anna Greaves said: “This is a major coup. This confirms our work as the UK’s leading charity offering whole person healthcare to people with cancer. It means we can reach more people needing our lifeaffirming support.” For more on Realising the Value, visit www.realisingthevalue.org.uk

Recognising Nina’s remarkable work Nina Barough CBE, founded the charity Walk the Walk 20 years ago to raise money for breast cancer and other cancer charities. The Bristol Cancer Help Centre, as we were then called, was one of the first beneficiaries of her support. Walk the Walk has continued to support us for the past 20 years and was instrumental in funding our move into the National Centre in Pill in 2006. We are delighted that Walk the Walk is celebrating raising an incredible

ÂŁ100 million for charity.

We feel very fortunate to be one of the charities that have benefitted and are deeply indebted to Nina and everyone involved in the Moonwalk for such incredible support. For more on Walk the Walk, visit www.walkthewalk.org

Showcasing our new suite of films We have created a brand new suite of films to help us deliver our services beyond our National Centre. Our new Preparing for Treatment and Health & Wellbeing films are being used in treatment centres and at information events throughout the UK. You can see some of the films on our website, including an introduction to our National Centre and self-help instructions on how to bring physical

activity into daily life. The films were made possible thanks to the generosity of the Gerald Micklem Charitable Trust, Albert Hunt Trust and Department of Heath funding.

Services island hop to Jersey As part of our expansion plans, we piloted a free, weekend-long Living Well course on Jersey in April. This proved so successful, we are looking to host more courses to benefit the islanders.

Our South Coast Regional Development Manager Kathy Adams said:

“ It was a calm, relaxed course, run over one weekend to keep costs as low as possible, so that we can reach even more people in the future. For more on our national services, visit www.pennybrohn.org.uk 9

Volunteer’s viewpoint: Meet and greeter Marion Poole “Sadly, my mum and brother-in-law faced cancer, and I’ve worked for other charities, so I know how vital volunteering is. It’s a win win situation. Penny Brohn UK benefits from my time, skills and energy, while I enjoy being with inspirational clients and staff. There are numerous volunteer roles on offer. Mine is flexible and suits me on both a skills and personal level. I support the night team, helping to welcome, settle in and have supper with clients. I look forward to it and know that I’m contributing to something

so valuable, as part of a professional, caring and supportive team. If you’re thinking of volunteering, call 01275 370094 to find out more. You may feel nervous, but honestly, it’s an absolute honour to help.

Piano’s pride of place In perfect harmony, National Centre visitors can enjoy the soothing sounds or tinkle the ivories of a new, £4,000 baby grand piano. We thank our volunteer, music-loving Rob Morley, his family and friends, for rallying to raise the money, whilst Mickleburgh Musical Instruments, of Bristol, kindly took £1,000 off the price.

Penny Brohn Community Choir member Rob simply wants “everyone visiting the Centre to benefit from the wonderful piano’s beautiful and uplifting sounds”.

Bosses swap boardroom for bungee A bunch of bosses went above and beyond to help ensure our first Bungee the Boss fundraiser was a superb success – raising £14,000. Crowds watched 14 people plummet from a 160ft crane at Bristol’s iconic Lloyds Amphitheatre in April. People nominated their bosses and raised £1,000 to see them take the picturesque plunge. But things became interesting when some superiors match-funded the figure to Bungee Bail, and chose one of the staff who nominated them to take their place.

Organiser Jamie Bramhall said:

“ We’re delighted that so many embraced Bungee the Boss. It was wonderful – thanks to everyone who supported the day. It was exciting to see some strategic Bungee Bails and the expressions on the faces of those taking their place.” Bringing bungee back to Bristol The first modern bungee jump took place off Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge in 1979 – the same year charity co-founder Penny Brohn was diagnosed with breast cancer. Jumpers David Kirke and Simon Keeling were arrested shortly afterwards, but continued to bungee across the world, spreading the concept.
