Harvest Time in the West Kootenay is a time for celebration. There is a harvest party every weekend from now until October 1st. :-)
CRESTON FALL FAIR
ROSSLAND FALL FAIR
Fri, Sept 9, 2pm-9pm Sat, Sept 10, 9am - 6pm
Sat, Sept 10,11am - 5pm Rossland Arena, Rossland
Creston & District Complex
This traditional fall fair is housed in the Rossland Arena, two or three steep blocks up from Rossland’s pretty downtown. The best in the region’s crafts and agricultural products are showcased inside the huge barn-like wooden structure. Who will win the Blue Ribbon for best carrot – or the most fantastic carrot? Or the finest squash?! Go to find out! It’s a true local experience, and a great introduction to this mountain community. This fair is an integral part of the annual Rossland Golden City Days celebrations. The town will be buzzing with live musical and theatrical entertainment, craft and market vendors, even a petting zoo! Let loose and enjoy Rossland’s incomparable mountain culture and join in for this last hurrah of summer. A great weekend destination for the family.
Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children www.crestonvalleyfair.com The Creston Fall Fair has been going strong for almost a century – so you know it’s the real deal. Now in its 98th year, it is still an old fashioned, traditional agricultural fair. Fair-goers will get to see 4-H shows, plus red ribbon adjudication for the best in local farming and homestyle products like canning, pickles, and pies. Bring your pocketbook for the vendors, who will be displaying produce and locally made crafts and products of all kinds. Lots of unusual events will appeal to everyone. Cheer on the human “horses” at the Cherry Chuckwagon race; the Pedal Tractor Pull competition for kids is too cute for words! There will be an auction, wine judging, most-beautiful-baby contest and so much more to see and do. See you in Creston at the fair!

HILLS GARLIC FEST
ARGENTA FALL FAIR
HARROP HARVEST FESTIVAL
www.hillsgarlicfest.ca Music, family stuff, 160 vendors, food, produce, crafts, and of course … GARLIC!!!! Only service dogs permitted. Admission is $5, free under 12! The sheer size of this fair is almost overwhelming. Just start with the coffee vendor and weave around each section. One of our favourite destinations is the crêpe stand and we always stop for the gelato. Yum! In addition to the food vendor area, there is a farmers’ market with lovely local produce, locally made crafts and other cottage products. The Hills Garlic Festival is the perfect way to get away from your daily routine and enjoy a September blue sky day with your family and friends.
The Argenta fair is small, but more than worth the beautiful drive north up the shore of Kootenay Lake. This up-thelake escape takes you to a heart warming place with lovely people. Once you leave the tarmac and are on the dirt road leading into Argenta, you might get an uncanny sensation that you are entering Hobbitville… A much anticipated feature of the Argenta fair is the arrival of the Honey Truck. Bring your containers and fill them up with golden streams of Grand Forks honey. Argenta is justly famous for the quality of its musicians. Enjoy live entertainment and food and craft vendors. Once it gets dark, the stage is set for the fair’s finale. Everyone gathers in a circle and, in the middle of a field, the stick monument is set afire, weather permitting.
Harrop Hall, 6066 McConnell Road, Harrop BC Free admission This annual event has over 35 vendors, great food from the Harrop Hall volunteers, music, and children’s events (parade and Imagination Station hosted by the Kootenay Lake Family Network). It offers a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere that encourages you to browse at leisure, have lunch and listen to local musicians performing throughout the afternoon. There are prizes to be won through various draws, including the always popular ‘Guess the weight of the pumpkin’ draw – the winner gets the pumpkin and half the proceeds! All revenue goes to Harrop Hall renovations, so plan to come for the day and enjoy the great atmosphere and lots of local produce and craft.

Start the day off right with the Salmo Children’s Centre Barnyard Breakfast. Then head to the Youth Centre, the vibrant hub of this area. Check out the skate jam – indoors if it’s rainy and outside if it is nice. The kids will have fun participating in old-fashioned games, farmers will be displaying local produce and there will be vendors of fine crafts from all over. The Salmo Valley is home to many musicians and the live music throughout the day will keep that festival vibe hopping. For the 4th year running, young artists will be painting spontaneous works of art – outside, in public. The finished panels will be on display for the duration of Art Walk.
