Fishing with Forrest Growing up in the West Kootenay, with all its beautiful and various stretches of water, learning to love fishing comes naturally. From the main part of Kootenay Lake and all its tributaries, to its west arm and the Kootenay River, the opportunities to cast your rod seem endless. However, I have yet to find a match for the mighty Columbia.
Near Castlegar, there are dozens of excellent holes and back eddies that have proven to be very productive. Beneath the railway bridge at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers is one spot that is definitely worth checking out. Or try casting in the large back eddy by Little Photo: Bernelle Bear Golf Course. You’ll Thiessen also enjoy some great fishing from the shores of the Columbia within Castlegar (or Trail) city limits.
The Columbia is an amazing highway system for many different species including rainbow trout, walleye, northern pike, and whitefish, just to name a few. The interactions between the runs of fishes, the timing of the insect blooms they feed upon, and the complex flow patterns in the river, result in a fishery that is endlessly challenging and always rewarding. In the summer the river seems to boil with excited rainbows surfacing to feed on the caddis hatches as well as hosts of other insects. If fly fishing is your method of choice, a flat bottomed boat with two people is ideal, but you can also have an excellent day fishing from shore in your hip waders. If spincast fishing is your preference, a variety of techniques and lure choices will come into play, helping you land the big lunker.
The Columbia is a mighty river and it can be dangerous for the unwary. It takes a whole lifetime to learn half of its secrets. If you’re a first timer, consider going with a guide. Ask about tours at the Visitor Centre. If you’re more confident and experienced, talk to Rod at the Castlegar Sports Centre and Fly The months from Shop; he will be able May to October to tell you what is provide awesome dry fly biting and where. Before you head action, especially from the to the river, reend of June to the end of member to check August. You’ll actually start the regulations for closures and to choose your targets, quotas. May your since there can be such lines sing and the abundance! fish answer the call!

Rossland
It seems that the mountain town of Rossland has just been waiting for the right bikes and riders to be born. With so many native advantages – old whiskey-running routes, miners’ trails, the winding roadbeds from long disused narrow gauge railways – the mountain biking scene was all set to explode. And it just did, and how! Over twenty trails are graded with either ther a green (easy), blue (intermediate) or black k (advanced) ( d d) ratt ing, so choosing the right trail for your skills and attitude is easy. The most famous of all of Rossland’s mountain biking trails is the Seven Summits. Recognized by the International Mountain Biking Association as an official ‘Epic’ and awarded ‘Trail of the Year’ by Bike magazine (2007), it is the crown jewel of the Rossland trail network.
Follies are still going strong with original ver Fo stories from Rossland’s rich gold mining hisstor ttory. While artistic licence is often in play, many of the characters are based on real m people from Rossland’s past. p This live musical theatre show only runs ffor two months from June 28 to August 27. The Grand Opening is July 6. Show2 ings are at 3 pm and 7:30 pm, Tuesday in through Saturday (no matinee on June 28.) thro Find the Follies in the old Bank of Montreal building in downtown Rossland on the corner buildin of Columbia Avenue and Washington Street. Be sure to come early. Space is limited! For ticketing information and more visit www.goldfeverfollies.com
Not suitable for beginners, the Seven Summits Trail is an all-natural terrain trail with no stunts or constructions. It doesn’t need them – it’s carved on the backsides and ridges of the mountains themselves, including sweeping alpine meadows, and their rocky scree underbellies. Lung-busting climbs alternate with exciting descents; the last part, the Dewdney Trail, is a joyful swoop. The fastest cross country riders can do the Seven Summits in less than three hours; competent weekend riders will want to walk some sections and should count on taking a full day. The Seven Summits, like many of the trails around Rossland, is in the remote backcountry, with only intermittent cell phone coverage from start to finish and little in the way of fresh water. Travel with a friend; then when you get back home and you find you can’t stop talking about your experience, there will be someone who feels the same way! For more information visit www.mountainbikingbc.ca or www.tourismrossland.com.
Gold Fever Follies Every year for 30 years, Rossland’s unique theatre group has been entertaining visitors and locals with their live performances. In 1987, a small group of theatre enthusiasts started a musical revue based on Rossland history. The show was embellished with local lore, old time tunes and real Can-Can dances from the Boomtown Garter Girls. Almost three decades later, the Rossland Gold Fe-

Visit the Sports Hall of Fame and Trail Museum, where you’ll find, among other things, a collection of Interior Salish native artifacts. Both are located in the Trail Memorial Centre on Bay Avenue. Take a Teck Tour. The Teck Interpretive Centre Centre is located above the TD Bank in downtown Trail on Bay Avenue. Open 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Stroll. More and more of Trail is becoming a pedestrian-friendly city. You have to make a point of spanning the Columbia on foot. The brand new Columbia River Skywalk is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in North America at 1000 feet in length. This majestic, signature structure is part of the Trans Canada Trail network and a local 2 km walking loop known as “Walking the Bridges. Cycle. Just a short ways out of Trail, at Warfield, is the Railgrade Trail. It is 7.1 km connector trail popular year round. Trails accessed from the Railgrade Trail include the Rubberhead, Whisky, Stunted Growth, Drakes, Spring Cleaning, Sudden Exposure and Green Door Trails. The Railgrade Trail is also part of the TCT (Trans Canada Trail). www.trailforks.com/region/trail-bluffs Do Gyro: There’s usually something happening at Gyro Park and it’s only a ten minute walk from downtown Trail. It’s a great place to stroll for the views and beautiful landscaping, or you can sunbathe on the boulders or on the wide sandy beach at the river’s edge. There is a naturally protected little cove and a safe area marked off with floating beads for the security of the less confident swimmers and children. Best place to pick up an al fresco lunch? Ferraro Foods grocers downtown. On a Thursday evening in Gyro Park in the summertime you can enjoy live music at the gazebo. Cast a line: Bring your gear and fish the Columbia River. Many people claim the Columbia offers the very best fly fishing anywhere in the province. You can fish right from the boulders near Gyro Park and there are plenty of back eddies to try along the river banks near the City of Trail. Stop in at the Visitor Info Centre at 1199 Bay Avenue; the staff will be happy to give you some good leads!

Much To Do About Trail
FRUITV FRUITVALE
Fruitvale A short distance from both Trail and Salmo, Fruitvale was once just a railway stop named Beaver Siding on the great Northern Railroad. In 1906, the name was changed to Fruitvale – an important part in the marketing and settlement strategy which depicted Fruitvale as the best fruit growing area in the West Kootenay. For the sports lover, Fruitvale is a great place to live with excellent facilities and many teams to join. The surrounding Beaver Valley is a paradise for the adventurer. Visit Fruitvale May 26 – 28 to take part in the festivities of the annual Beaver Valley May Days. It all starts Friday with the Citizen of the Year presentation and a great fireworks display. On Saturday the Fruitvale Express train rides to Beaver Falls and there’s a parade. The fun continues through the weekend with kids’ games, ball tournaments, the “Beavarian” beer garden and much more.

Walk inside this tiny 1914 log schoolhouse and take a look at the fourth R: Restoration. The desks are topped with old-time books and ink wells. You can almost hear the music from the 1885 piano as you gaze at the wool Union Jack flag sitting in the corner by the teacher’s kerosene lamp. It seems to be just waiting for the students to arrive for school. The log school is 8 km east of Fruitvale on Highway 3B. It was built in 1912 (16´x18´) by John Potter Bell on the corner of his property. The Beaver Valley & Pend Oreille Historical Society restored the school in 1989 with financial assistance from the Government of BC through BC Heritage Trust and BC Lotteries. Believed to be the oldest remaining log school house in the interior of BC, it is now a fully furnished school museum.
For the explorer, there are hiking trails galore. A number of trailer and tent sites with hook-ups are available at reasonable rates. Other amenities are showers, a covered kitchen area and a lovely gazebo. For more information on the Beaver Valley Family Park, call 1-800-355-7352.
Camp At Champion Lakes Provincial Park
Champion Lakes Provincial Park Photo courtesy of the Village of Fruitvale, www.village.fruitvale.bc.ca
With three small lakes this park is a canoeist’s dream. There’s an adventure playground and a “safe for kids” shallow swimming area right next to the campground. You’ll enjoy the weekend interpretive programs, and the many nature walking trails. These lakes are regularly stocked with rainbow trout. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the lakes, but powerboats are prohibited. The park is situated off Hwy 3B between Salmo and Trail, and 5 km east of Fruitvale.
Beaver Valley Family Park Looking for a campground to stay at for several days? A location for your family reunion, or even just a picnic spot? Beaver Valley Family Park at Marsh Creek can’t be beat. There is so much to do! Small kids will love the playground, for the older kids there are volleyball and basketball courts and a field large enough for football or soccer. If you’ve heard about disc soccer (think frisbee-golf) and have always wanted to try out this fast-growing sport, the park has an 18 hole PDGA standard disc golf course – and it’s free to play! The course, which was designed by Devon Gunn of Grand Forks (one of Canada’s top disc golfers), offers some really challenging holes that will make the course competitive even for the seasoned player. Disc golfing is easy on the body and a whole lot of fun for all ages.

Originally named Salmon Siding, Salmo was once just a whistle stop on the Nelson/ Fort Shepherd Railway. The ruins of abandoned mine structures still dot the hillsides, remnants of the boomtown years of 1896 and 1897 when gold, silver, lead, zinc and tungsten were mined and Salmo boomed as a centre for supplies and entertainment. Salmo’s famous balconied wooden hotel dates es from this time of roaring men and industry (and no doubt, more than a few bold ladies.)

With three exceptional wineries and counting, the Creston Valley has been dubbed Canada’s next wine region. Take a wine tasting tour around Creston, and you will be impressed by the variety and quality of wines that these boutique wineries produce. There are two award-winning wineries in Creston, located side by side. It could not be easier to taste and tour. A third winery is located just north of Creston. Skimmerhorn Winery & Vineyard opened in 2006. It features cool climate grapes such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Marechal Foch as well as other outstanding varietals. Skimmerhorn has a wine shop and free tasting bar, which is open Wednesday to Sunday in the spring and in the fall, daily in July and August. The patio is a perfect place to indulge in offerings from the Tapas Menu with a glass of wine as you enjoy the beautiful valley view. Skimmerhorn offers tours on weekends from late June through late September. The tours cost $5 (for the adults only, no charge for minors), refunded on the second bottle of wine purchased that day. Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery is named after one of the region’s legendary pioneers, William Baillie-Grohman. It was purchased in 2006, and the first wines were released in November 2010. The approach at the 5000-case boutique winery is to produce small lots of super premium wine. Everything is done by hand and according to sustainable practices, from the farming to the picking and sorting at harvest. Grape production is maintained at a low yield per vine, to ensure concentrated flavours and high quality. Visit their tasting room which opens April
1 for weekends and then 7 days a week starting May 13 through to mid-September. Bring a picnic and sit out and have a glass of wine by the vineyard. Tours are provided as time permits. The latest foray into the vintner’s art in the region near Creston is Wynnwood Cellars, which began in 2007 with the planting of the Sirdar vineyard. The site slopes south to southwest above Duck Lake and benefits from soil rich in limestone and the depth and strong reflected light off the lake which moderates the temperature, keeping the climate suitable for growing grapes. Visit this unique winery and taste the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Merlot. They are sure to please your palate. The Wynnwood Cellars tasting room is open daily May 15 – October 15, 11 am – 6 pm.
And The Stars Line Up! Not too big and not too small, Starbelly Jam is a “just right” festival. Goldilocks would approve. Festival organizers have always gone out of their way to make Starbelly a very family-friendly festival and a whole generation of kids now have memories of the fun and freedom-to-play that they enjoyed at Starbelly. If your kids are the kind that you know would thrive if they joined the circus, take them to this festival where the experiment will be just as fun but happily, only temporary. There is a lot of open space to race around and play. The kids parade, when the kids all wear their fantastic masks and headdresses, is a highlight. Crawford Bay Park is 5 minutes south of the ferry landing. Basic camping by the park will appeal to families and the area also has many other types of accommodation. Visit starbellyjam.org for info – selling early bird tix till May 1st.

They may not tell you everything you need to know about Gray Creek (pop. 354), but the signs are a pretty good indication that this community has a sense of humour, and at least one person who is handy with a chainsaw. (That would be Tom and though of course he is unique in his own way, he isn’t the only one handy with a chainsaw, it must be said.)

But of course it wasn’t always this way. In the late 1880s it was a rough camp catering to the needs of miners drawn to the area by a silver rush. Located at the foot of Toad Mountain, the camp grew rapidly into a town, and by the early 1900s Nelson boasted several fine hotels, a number of churches, substantial residences and elegant public buildings. Incorporated as a city in 1897, with a population of 1000, Nelson owes many of its beautiful buildings to the civic pride of its early citizens.
It is quite possible that Nelson can boast of more restaurants, breweries, pubs and coffee joints per capita than any other Canadian city. All that mountain air must inspire the appetite! There’s plenty of culture too. You might take in a world class performance at the Capitol Theatre, or spend a day touring Touchstones Museum and all the art galleries downtown. Getting to know the wide variety of independent shops, from booksellers to handcrafted jewellery, would take the better part “This small of a week. town of 10,000 people

Even after living in an urban area of two million people in the States and visiting many artistic communities, Nelson is, per capita, astounding…Walk down Baker Street—the main thoroughfare of town—and you’ll see what I mean. The sensory overload spills down adjoining streets, only stopped by Kootenay Lake’s shoreline.”
For residents, and visitors too, there is so much to do in Nelson. With an aquatic centre, curling and ice rinks, and soccer pitches right down on the lake, it’s easy to get into a game at any time of year. There is also an indoor climbing emporium, a mountain bike skills park and skatepark, sailing, rowing, classes in yoga, boxing, martial arts, dance… It would be hard to think of a recreational or cultural activity that you couldn’t get involved with here.
Why not begin your stay in Nelson with a visit to the new visitor centre. Find it at the bottom of Baker Street in the refurbished Gina Bégin, ginabegin.com Railtown District. The Capitol Theatre After dinner at one of Nelson’s many fine and original restaurants, a perfect way to top off your evening is with some engaging entertainment at Nelson’s intimate theatre, the Capitol. Constructed in 1927, this Art Deco gem is not too big yet not too small and feels really old-timey. Going to a show at the Capitol is a great way to absorb some local atmosphere. The Capitol provides Nelsonites with many different types of productions throughout the year. Summer youth productions (this summer, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming) have been the training ground and inspiration for generations of young local thespians, singers and musicians. The lushly restored old theatre also brings in top quality acts – classical ballet, contemporary dance theatre, classical and contemporary music, comedy and a variety of other performances – from the Kootenays, other parts of Canada, and around the world. The Capitol Theatre is located at 421 Victoria Street, 250-352-6363. Check out the calendar of events at www. capitoltheatre.bc.ca to see what’s playing during your visit.
Take A Stroll Back in Time… Dubbed “the prettiest small town in Canada” by the New York Times, Nelson possesses charm and character. With over 350 heritage homes and office buildings, there are more heritage buildings per capita than in any other city in BC. The architectural styles used in early construction were influenced by styles typical of San Francisco, Spokane and Seattle. The loving restoration of these buildings to their old glory is a movement that has been embraced by the residents, business owners and local government. These historic buildings define Nelson for visitors and residents alike and are a great source of pride. The Nelson Chamber of Commerce has two fascinating brochures worth picking up. One brochure, The Architectural Heritage Walking Tour, will take you on a stroll through the downtown core of the city where you can admire its many beautiful buildings and learn some very interesting facts about Nelson’s history. The second, The Architectural Motoring Tour, is a great way to get to know even more of this wonderful city and its heritage, and to enjoy its beautiful scenic splendour. Both brochures can be picked up in the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce office at 91 Baker Street.
Keeping your eye on the ball is only the first challenge. Overlooking the beautiful City of Nelson, Kootenay Lake and Kokanee Glacier, Granite Pointe offers a golf experience that’s as much about the view as it is about the score. Self-contained traveller? Book one of Granite Pointe’s RV sites and stay just steps from tee box #1 and the clubhouse. The clubhouse has every service including a restaurant, pro-shop, washrooms and showers.

Zebra & Quagga Alert!
A day spent fishing on Kootenay Lake is like a day in the bank. You’ll be withdrawing from it forever – whenever you need to find yourself again.
In the spring and summer, when the weather gets warm in the Kootenay region, most of us seek refuge in our refreshing lakes and rivers. Whether it’s boating, fishing, or swimming, our waters are valued for their many recreational possibilities. However, how many of us know that aquatic invasive species pose a serious threat to our enjoyment of these recreational activities?
You can fish by boat, kayak or canoe. Gear? Try bucktail streamers on the surface or plugs down deep. Or cast from shore with spoons and jigs. There are three different types of rainbows in Kootenay Lake; Mykiss, Kamlooper and the world renowned Gerrard rainbow with sizes ranging from 1 to 20 lbs! Not to be outdone is the bull trout or Dolly Varden. They are great to eat or smoke up for later and range from 1 to 15 lbs.
Invasives, such as zebra and quagga mussels, can ruin recreational activities as they damage boat motors, reduce sport-fishing opportunities, and cover beaches with razor-sharp shells. These non-native mussels spread easily across waterways by “hitchhiking” on watercraft from infested provinces and states.

The West Kootenay EcoSociety is the force behind the great outdoor markets in Nelson. Two markets operate each week from spring through fall. Neighbours support each other at these markets, since 80% of each vendor’s wares must be made locally. It’s a do-good and feel-good coming together, and everyone has a good time.
The EcoSociety’s Nelson Garden Festival is back, and it is bigger and better than ever! Whether you’re landscaping or planning a tomato crop, you’ll find it all at the West Kootenay EcoSociety’s 16th Annual Nelson Garden Festival. It takes place on Saturday, May 13, in downtown Nelson on the 200 block of Baker Street, from 10 am to 3 pm, rain or shine and it’s free.

It is located at Cottonwood Falls Park. Follow the signs! The 2017 Nelson Downtown Local Market is a Wednesday market and is located in the 400 block of Baker Street. It starts June 14th and runs until September 27th. The Wednesday market is open from 9:30 am until 3 pm.

When the evenings warm up, Baker Street heats up as EcoSociety’s Marketfest spills out over the sidewalks. These street parties are filled with 100 vendors, kids’ entertainment and bands playing on two stages. This year Marketfest will take place on July 28 and August 25. These family-friendly events run from 6 pm to 10:30 pm on the 200 and 300 blocks of Baker Street. A $5 donation for admission is kindly requested for anyone over 18 to help cover costs. All Aboard! Nelson’s electric streetcars first started running in 1899. The line was only five miles long and could boast only three cars, but it served the city faithfully for fifty years. After the Second World War, the electric tramway service was replaced by buses. Car 23 was re-purposed as a gift shop, a storage shed, even a dog kennel before it was rescued and restoration began. The Nelson Electric Tramway Society was formed in 1988 and soon the vision to have Streetcar 23 back “on track” started to become a reality. The car made its second debut in 1992, carrying over 20,000 people in four months. Today there are over 70 volunteers who look after all aspects of the operation and new members are always wel-

What’s In The Car Barn? The Nelson Tramway Society has put Streetcar #23 back on track along the lakeshore in Nelson. Go for a ride, then take some time to check out the Tramway Society’s museum in the Car Barn, which is where Car 23 sleeps at night in Lakeside Park. Inside the car barn you will find lots of information about Nelson’s tramway system, you will learn how trams operate and see how the streetcars are maintained. Check out the restored Birney Car, a lightweight trolley car that was innovative in its day, back in the roaring ’20s. Also on display is an impressive array of local artifacts that were donated to the society by Nelson citizens from all walks of life. The museum is open daily noon to 3 pm, after May 19. www.nelsonstreetcar.org

drop of the Selkirk Mountains, Nelson’s rides take the West Coast style and crank it up a notch! There are many tracks within a 15 minute drive and quite a number of trails that you can get to from Nelson on your own two wheels.
Challenge what you think you know about yourself by trekking the magnificent mountains surrounding the City of Nelson.
Stop in at one of Nelson’s sport or bike shops for current information. Gerick’s on Baker Street specializes in making sure you get your biking fix while in and around Nelson. The knowledgeable staff can help you determine the best trails for your interest and ability. Some of the trails serve a double purpose, hiking and biking, so ask about the trail etiquette for these multi-purpose areas.
Is rock climbing your thing? Enjoy a day ascending The Date, a very accessible multi-pitch climb within reach of Nelson. It is a great walk into the base of the route, and a fun and thoughtful climb from there. You’ll enjoy stunning views at the top – the rewards of this great adventure. Pick up a copy of The West Kootenay Rock Guide book at the at the Visitor Centre in the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce office at 91 Baker Street, for information on the more than 400 climbs in the Nelson area!
The Nelson Mountain Bike Guide describes 40 trails developed since 2009. All proceeds from the sale of the guide go directly towards funding the trail crew’s building and ongoing maintenance. Hiking is another great way to spend some time. Nelson is central to many types of hikes for all abilities. Check the book stores for Where Locals Hike in the West Kootenay or, again, ask for trail info at the Info Centre or sports stores around town. Another great guide is The Kootenays (Backroad Mapbook, Number 4). It will get you just about anywhere you need to go.
Mountain biking is a journey to Nirvana for the avid biker or for anybody, really, who is reasonably fit and has the desire to get away from the pavement. Showcased in many mountain bike films, Nelson’s trails offer everything from gentle railway grades to steep, rooty technical tracks. For the hard core freeriders there is enough diversity to keep the adrenaline pumping. With the breathtaking back-

Just about a twenty minute drive from Nelson along Highway 3A, is the beautiful Kokanee Creek Provincial Park. From a glacier high above, Kokanee Creek carves out a canyon down to the wide sandy beaches below, creating a spectacular natural delta on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. The swift flowing Kokanee Creek is an important fish-bearing stream. The park has both man-made and natural spawning channels for Kokanee salmon – landlocked since the last glacial age – that spawn in large numbers in the late summer. In the low-lying areas closest to the beach are playgrounds, picnic areas and camping spots. Walking trails have been teased through the marshes and forests of fir, hemlock and pine so you can meander up from the beach to the Nature Centre.
Spend a little time at the nature centre (they have good coffee!) and find out about the programs that are sponsored and organized by the West Kootenay Eco-Society. The naturalists on staff create exciting programs to help you explore and understand the amazing variety of flora and fauna in the park. On Tuesdays, local scientists share their research in the Science in the Park series, while an aboriginal perspective on wildlife is brought to you every Thursday. For amazing wildlife photos and video cam footage, see the Kokanee Creek Nature Centre Facebook page. For more information about Nature Centre programming go to www.kokaneenaturecentre.org. For camping info see www.kootenayswparks.com View down the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, facing east. Kokanee Park is the delta in the foreground. Photo: John Davis

BALFOUR LFOUR
Balfour In most rural communities, there is an ebb and flow of social and creative energy. It’s almost always volunteers who make things happen in places like Balfour and it takes a critical mass of people who are at the right stage of life (they have the time!) to get things started. External forces can also have a lot to do with why people come together, and so it was for Balfour when the provincial government proposed relocating the Kootenay Lake ferry landing. The ferry landing is, in lots of ways, the lifeblood of this small town. Many (but by no means all) of Balfour’s 60 small businesses are clustered within strolling distance of the dock. ‘Choose Balfour’ was the name of the campaign launched by the residents last year to keep the ferry traffic in Balfour. Thousands of people from all the outlying communities showed their support for the cause and the end result? The ferry landing is still in Balfour! To thank all their supporters Balfour is throwing a series of parties in 2017, Canada’s 150th year.
70th Jubilee Celebration This two day event (June 10, 11) is Balfour’s jubilant response to assurances that their future as the Western terminus of the Kootenay Lake Ferry is no longer in doubt. The celebration starts with a ceremony at the little park by the landing, followed by live music, and old fashioned events all afternoon. Party like it’s 1947! Time to find your fedora or your Sunday hat, to air out your double breasted suit or special dress with the wide shoulders and swingy skirt. Parties are always more fun when everyone is dressing up and you and the crowd will all look pretty swell. Later in the evening, down at the beach, there will be draws and prizes, and when it gets dark, a fireworks display. The next morning there will be a pancake breakfast outside of Holly’s Diner, with more music by the Princeton Community Band on Tour.

Cody Cave Tours
Come to the hamlet of Ainsworth Hot Springs for a treat for body and soul. Immerse yourself in the naturally warm, healing waters. The source of the springs that fill the pools at Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort lies in the mountains above, in the Cody Caves area. The water works its way down through porous calcareous rock, renewing the water naturally approximately six times a day. You can see the outflow of the springs as you drive (slowly!) by or walk on the highway just beneath the hotel. The steaming water cascades over the cliff through a tangle of English ivy and watercress on its way to the lake.
Total darkness. Underground cascades. Soda straws. Calcite and sedimentary rock formations. Stalactites, stalagmites. Draperies. Climbing ropes and ladders. Ancient abandoned fossils. Galleries. Huge granite boulders. Dog leg passage. 40 foot rappel. Fragile conservancy section. The squeeze. John’s Crawl. Recently discovered passageway. Cave extension. Spectacular soda straw passage…
Since time immemorial, the Ktunaxa people (pronounced K-too-nah-ha) have valued the springs as a place for healing. After battle, warriors would come to soak in the spirit waters (nupika wu’u), easing their heart and limbs back from injury and strain through to strength once again.
Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort Today, the site of the ancient hot springs is home to the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort. In a pleasing circularity, the resort is now owned and operated by the Lower Kootenay First Nations Band. They are proud to bring their unique warmth to the hospitality you will experience when you stay at the resort. Staying at the hotel means you have exclusive use of the healing waters in the mornings before 10 am. Float in the steaming open-air pool, then wade into the horseshoeshaped cave, where the darkness, mineral deposits and the humidity all combine to offer an exhilarating experience. The Hot Springs restaurant, renamed the Ktunaxa Grill, has been re-vamped to be a welcoming lounge with a family friendly vibe. The resort’s regulars and Kootenay Lake locals give rave reviews about the new menu which features Chef Aaron Day’s interpretation of First Nations cuisine. His kitchen uses classic and innovative cooking techniques, using ingredients that are heal–––thy, nonGMO, hormone and antibiotic-free. Try the Bannock Bruschetta or the Maple Roasted Chicken Breast!
Sound like an adventure for you? From May to September there are tours suited to all ages from 5 years up, lasting from 2 to 7 hours including the forest hike from the parking lot to the cave entrance. All tours are by reservation only. For more information call 250-359-CAVE (2283) or visit www.codycavetours.com

First called Kane’s Landing, this Kootenay lakeside settlement on the delta formed by the Kaslo River sprang up almost overnight back in the roaring 1890s. In those days of the western silver and gold rushes, the area was swarming with prospectors. Picture the BlueBelle Bistro on Front Street as it was then – the Silver Dollar Saloon – which was only one of 27 saloons in the new boom town of Kaslo.
Kaslo
Kaslo has been celebrating May Days in its own inimitable style for over a century. This year, May 20 – 22 marks Kaslo’s 125th May Days. In the old days the sternwheelers ran excursion trips from Nelson and stopped to pick up revellers at every point along the way, while others arrived in every type of boat and conveyance, filling the streets of Kaslo with miners, prospectors and their families. The main event then was a horse race down Front Street, with prizes as high Photo: Dave Heagy as $250, and a unique “Prospectors’ Race.”
So it’s a bit Kaslo, once quieter on your world famous for its average week Bing cherries and night now, Gravenstein apples, but there are took 1st Place for its cherries still plenty at an international fruit exhiof good reason to stay bition in London in 1909 9 and a while in 1st Place for its apples att th the Kaslo. Take fruit exhibition in a look across Chicago, in 1912 the brilliant clear water of Kootenay Lake at the mountains opposite. The Purcells appear unmarked by roads and manmade structures. Rent a kayak at the Adventure Centre on Front Street, or a houseboat from the shipyards to really appreciate the drama of the lake and its enfolding mountains.
If you’re someone who enjoys driving, getting here – especially in a sports car or on a motorcycle – is an adventure. The curvy blacktop, the sudden vistas of glaciers or lake demand your attention and your skills. Kaslo is on the West Koot Route, which is getting more well-known all the time as a favourite driving route for bikers of all kinds. In Kaslo you can enjoy live music in the cafes virtually any week of the year. The number of music festivals is astonishing, considering the population. Backcountry hiking and biking is huge and the lake provides scope for all kinds of adventures and good fishing too. Come and visit, and make Kaslo the base camp for your adventures!

May Days
May Days has events for all ages and tastes – theatre, musicians in the park, a slow-pitch tournament, a Show ‘n’ Shine, kids’ races, as well as food, craft and wellness booths. On Saturday and Sunday, join the crowds at the Logger Sports Grounds down by the beach. On Monday join the people lined up along Front Street and catch the sights and sounds of the Kaslo Parade. Afterwards, walk down to the Maypole in Vimy Park and watch the children weave ribbons in a traditional Maypole dance, just as their parents and grandparents did when they were children themselves.
Logging is Tougher Than It Looks This is a show you don’t want to miss. Every Victoria Day long weekend lumber Jacks and Jills come to Kaslo’s Logger Sports Grounds from all over North America and even further. These athletes, whose skills are linked more closely to Canada as the land of legendary timber than any other sport, put on a show that always wows the crowds. The sport has a rich and colourful history originating in the logging camps in this country in the late 1800s. The individual events are fast-paced and range from tree climbing an 80 foot spar pole to chopping through a 12 inch standing chop block to precariously balancing on a springboard 10 feet in the air and log burling – one-on-one log rolling – which ends with competitors splashing into the chilly water of the burling pond. We’ll see you Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21. Admission is free!

iDIDaRide & Run
The signature race is the 41 km Ride. Competitors are in for some technical rooty paths, edgy flats with stunning views, testy climbs on shady forested single track, flowy riverside runs and endless vistas from the ridge tops. This course will challenge an experienced rider to do it quickly, but will be very satisfying for the rider who takes a little longer as well. The 41 will be longer next year, growing in length each year as trails are developed and connected. The long term goal is to offer an epic 100 km point-2-point all around Kaslo!
The middle race, the 20 km Ride or Run, is designed to appeal to athletes who are strong, but maybe have never done a race before. Spectacular scenery, some climbing and gliding, and a few technical sections will test your biking and running skills. The 8.5 km Ride or Run is designed for the beginner or ‘tourist’ racer of all ages, who is active but would prefer a lighter commitment. Expect some short climbs and easy downs, a few roots to bounce over and then towards the end, some lovely flowy and well bermed trails through the Family Pump Park. iDIDaRide-Run is, of course, named after the epic dog sled race in Alaska, the Iditarod. More about Kaslo’s new backcountry challenge and registration information at http://ididaridekaslo.ca Are you a mountain biker? Get the skinny on Kaslo’s backcountry trails and maps too at www.trailforks.com (search Kaslo).
Come down to the ship at the bottom of Front Street for a journey into the not-so-distant past that feels like a world away. The sternwheeler belongs to the era when only the steamships could have brought so many settlers and prospectors to this difficult landscape. Kootenay Lake was the only highway. Once on board, you will be immersed in the old days when ladies’ dresses swept around their ankles and men wore woolen suits and always a hat. You can tour her decks and her state rooms, including the elegant Ladies Salon, or go down below and look at all the cargo in the hold and the great coal fired engine in her belly. The sternwheeler is open daily after Mother’s Day. She is also home to the Kaslo Visitors Centre. For more information see www.klhs.bc.ca

The Langham
Jazz is in the name, but in the last 25 years and counting, the scope of the music at the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival has broadened. All kinds of genres spill over the crowds in the amphitheatre-like festival site at Kaslo Bay. Jazz, blues, world beat, and yet-to-be classified beats get blown over the lake, into Kaslo’s downtown and, finally, the summer vibe gets reinvigorated at all the pop-up campsites and on the beaches.
The Langham Cultural Centre is the hub of cultural, arts and heritage in Kaslo. Inside is an 80 seat theatre, 2 galleries, a multi-use room for classes and workshops, 14 studios and the Japanese Canadian Museum.
As festival organizer Paul Heinrichs points out “There’s not much traditional jazz in the lineup. But what it really comes down to is – what’s jazz? You could talk for hours about that.” Festival goers will discover a diversity of musical genres, a natural laid-back environment that’s very family friendly, quality sound, and truly exceptional talent. Mountains rising over 10,000 feet from the lake are the backdrop for the performers. The audience can watch and listen while reclining on the sunny, sandy beach, in the shade of the trees, or even while swimming or boating in the water around the stage. Who’s on the ticket? Saskatoon’s rock ‘n’ rollers the Sheepdogs (“Pure, simple, good-time music,”), Fred Penner, lately a surprise hit on the university/college circuit (you’re never too old for Fred Penner!) is coming, and you have to go see the world famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans. The floating stage will be bouncing! Find out about all the different acts, the workshops and more at www.kaslojazzfest.com
The clapboard sided, cedar shake-roofed building on A Avenue and Fifth Street was originally built in 1896 as a hotel. It was so busy in town back then that each bed was rented out to three miners, who slept in shifts. It later became a bank, a bottling company for ginger beer and sodas, and a boatworks. 75 years ago, in the late winter of 1942, the Langham became the home for eighty men, women and children who did not arrive by choice. It was World War II and the BC government, with an Order In Council, initiated a scheme whereby Canadians of Japanese descent were exiled to the interior of the province. With only one bag of possessions each to remind them of their former life on the coast, thousands were forced to live in tent camps and in the old buildings that had been abandoned after the mining boom went bust. In 1942, Kaslo’s heyday was a distant memory. This influx of new residents made a big impression and animated the half empty town. 75 years later, in 2017 a series of events throughout the summer will commemorate this tumultuous period of our history. For details and a schedule of events, visit www.thelangham.ca The Langham art galleries are open Thursday to Sunday 1 to 4 pm; the Japanese Canadian Museum Sunday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and Saturdays when the door is open.

Nakusp
Incorporated in 1892, Nakusp’s strategic location led to it becoming part of the fur trade route as well as the jumping off point for some of the early silver, lead and zinc mining in the Slocan Valley. Since there were no roads or railways between the Kootenay mining areas and Vancouver, goods had to be shipped via waterways from Nakusp, all the way up the Arrow Lakes to Revelstoke where the main CPR line was located. Go to the Visitor Centre for all the info you need to set up your day. Be sure to reserve some of time for the museum next door. Of special interest is the brand new 3650 sq ft addition to the museum that is dedicated to telling the Sinixt story, from the last Ice Age to the present day. There is a lot to see and take in, including a diorama and a tule tipi made of woven bulrush reeds.
sites and open grassy meadows. You can always find a quiet spot for yourself, try some beachcombing or join in the fun at the main swimming area. Heading southeast towards New Denver, you reach Summit Lake. Take a day or a couple of weeks to enjoy Three Islands Resort or Summit Lake Provincial Park. The resort offers pull-thru and tenting sites. Enjoy beautiful mountain and lake views, friendly staff, and a variety of great amenities. Reservations by phone only. The provincial park visitors can enjoy canoeing, fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout or swimming in the lake’s clear, refreshing mountain water. There is a boat launch, covered picnic shelters, day use area and campsites/tent pads. A As you continue towards New Denver, you will come to the hamlet of Rosebery. Rosebery used to be the northern mooring of the Slocan Lake railway barge. Now it is easily recognizable by the log yard at the top of Slocan Lake. It is the location of one of the nicest camping spots in the area, Rosebery Provincial Park. This densely treed park offers 36 spacious campsites alongside the rushing Wilson Creek.
Cool Camping Nakusp has some great camping areas. The Nakusp Municipal Campground is located in the heart of the village, close walking distance to the public beach, playgrounds, ball fields, shopping and restaurants. Sites are treed, some are powered and there are showers, water fill-ups and a sani-dump on site (and huckleberries if you’re there at the right time) McDonald Creek Provincial Park is located 12 kms south of Nakusp on Hwy 6, heading towards Burton. It has recently been updated with new water faucets, a shower building, sani-dump and newer toilets. McDonald Creek features several kilometres of fine sandy beach, waterfront

One of the first things you should do after arriving in Nakusp is to take a stroll along the path that follows the shoreline of upper Arrow Lake. The lovely landscaping, the view, the beach, the fact that you can walk from one end of town to the other and feel energized rather than tired – those factors are just the beginning of why residents of Nakusp love their town. But there’s lots more, and this year is a special year, because this year, Nakusp is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

Hot Springs Hikes
In 2017, the storied Kootenay Sufferfest is a series of biking and running challenges.
Starting in the Nakusp Hot Springs parking lot, hikers can choose trails ranging from short to long, level to steep. Begin on the pet friendly, wheelchair accessible trail leading to the newly built Kuskananx foot bridge.
The Marin Wildside Enduro takes place in Nakusp April 29, 30 and is the first course in the Sufferfest smorgasbord. May 6-7 is the salad course – road bike racing on some of the West Kootenay’s most beautiful roadways, like the scenic mountain highway between Nakusp and Trout Lake. There will be several distances from which you can choose, and in celebration of Nakusp’s 125th anniversary, a challenging 125 km turnaround route that includes lake views and roadside waterfalls. In late May the conditions are right for the long distance outback runner. If that suits your appetite, you’ll want to register for the half marathon, but don’t think of it as Boston Marathon Lite. It may be only half the length but consider what the Kootenays have that an eastern seaboard city does not: moss, bogs, stones and forests, but most of all hills, mountains, ie: LOTS of ups and downs.
On the far side of the bridge you can view a spectacular waterfall, check out the source of the resort’s mineral water, view the cathedral cedars in the area, swim in an alpine lake or walk along the 8.5 kilometres of cross country trails one of which will lead you down into the village. Maps can be picked up at the Nakusp Hot Springs lobby or at the visitor centre on 6th Avenue NW, downtown Nakusp. After your day of hiking, come for a relaxing soak or stay in the campground or cedar chalets for more days of exploring the area.
Relax. Refresh. Return.
Other races on the menu this summer include the Burton Amazing Race & Relay, June 24, and leading up to the main course and happening on Canada Day, July 1st, a 48 hour ultra run for teams or individuals called The Last One Standing. On July 23, Kootenay Sufferfest serves up their epic race, the Idaho Peak Ultra Trail Marathon. Find out more and to register: Kootenay Sufferfest on Facebook or their website kootenaysufferfest.com

Spend Canada’s 150th Birthday in Silverton
Prospectors arrived in New Denver in 1892 and cobbled together the beginnings of a town on the shore of Slocan Lake. The name they gave to what was hardly more than a camp with only a few wooden buildings was El Dorado City. Early hopes were that the settlement would soon rival the boomtown cities that had sprung up during the California gold rush, but the golden moniker, in the absence of a major gold strike, was soon to change. The name that eventually stuck was another promotional effort, this time attempting to borrow the allure of Denver, Colorado.
Silverton has been celebrating Canada almost as long as BC has been a Canadian province. This year the party is going to be huge! There is something for everyone to enjoy, starting with a pancake breakfast at the Memorial Hall, followed by a parade down main street led again this year by the RCMP and a Kiltie Bagpipe Band. Nikkei Memorial Centre During World War II, over 22,000 Japanese-Canadians were forcibly resettled from the West Coast into camps in the interior of BC; 4000 of these were resettled in New Denver. The Nikkei Centre on Josephine Street tells their story. The centre consists of five buildings, three of which are the original huts built in 1942. Inside you will see the furnishings used in daily life. At times two families occupied one hut, one family on either side of a common kitchen. Toilet facilities, rows of outhouses, are also preserved. Exhibits in the large central hall display the equipment, tents, desks and other luggage used by the Nikkei – all they had been allowed to keep or could build. The centre is opens May 1

Silverton Silverton “the Beautiful” was first settled in 1892 by miners working the south face of Idaho Mountain, extracting the rich deposits of lead and silver. By the late 1890s the town had six hotels, three general stores, a newspaper, a school and telephone connections to the mines in New Denver and Sandon. Silverton feels a bit smaller than that now, and in fact it is the second smallest municipality in BC. In 2011 there 195 residents, and in a remarkable instance of Steady Eddy, when the census rolled around again in 2016 there were still 195 people. But apparently not exactly the same ones. It seems that if you’re going to move away from this beautiful village, it’s incumbent on you to find your replacement first. At least, that’s the scuttlebutt. BC Canada

Mountains, lakes, the serene beauty of the Slocan River, winding roads and the friendly villages all combine to make the Slocan Valley an inspiring place to visit. The Slocan River was used as a transportation route by native people, miners and loggers. To this day you can still find stretches that feel just as it once did when the paddle was the most common engine – a wild, unspoiled ecosystem. The water is crystal clear and by early summer becomes warm enough for pleasant swimming in its many deep pools. Rafting and tubing are favoured sports on the river. The first section of the river is a gentle float area; in the last few kilometres the pace of the river increases as you progress to the rapids. There, you will enjoy some really great class II and III whitewater. Scenic in all seasons, the well loved Slocan Valley trail is used year round. Other popular recreation areas in the valley include the Winlaw Nature Park and the Walter Clough Wildlife Area. The Slocan Valley is home to one of the few remaining great undisturbed and relatively undiscovered natural areas of the world, Valhalla Provincial Park. This park is perched above the valley in the Selkirk Mountains. Offering 49,600 hectares of dramatic granite peaks, river valleys, and sub-alpine lakes, it is the playground of hikers, bikers and back country enthusiasts and a well-spring for those seeking solitude and inspiration. Slocan Lake forms the eastern boundary of the park. This deep, clear lake has great fishing. Access is by trail north of the lake, by boat across the lake, or by road south of the lake from Slocan or Passmore.

Welcome to the best kept secret in the Kootenays – Slocan – a picturesque lakeshore village that lies at the south end of pristine Slocan Lake. Guarded by the Valhallas in the Selkirk Mountain range, our friendly and safe community is a wonderful place to visit or live. We enjoy four distinct seasons with very different activities available during each one (see our list below.) We are a very diverse population, ranging from young families to retirees. Here there is something for everyone regardless of age, from sitting on the beach reading a book to rock climbing along the shores of the lake. No cell phone service in most of our valley, however free WIFI is available in Slocan. We have a pay phone on Harold Street!

Have you noticed the West Koot Route signs on the highway? The route brings you to a handful of lakeside towns and through deep mountain passes and river valleys. Roughly, it’s a circle that connects the towns and villages along Kootenay Lake, Slocan Lake and Upper Arrow Lake.

The West Koot route was established in 2014 by the Nakusp, Slocan Valley and Kaslo chambers of commerce. Connect the dots on your map and connect with nature as you travel these meandering highways and byways – the West Koot Route is a great way to add some form to your wandering. Slocan City Unity Music Festival
With two stages, a kids’ zone, workshops, live art, good food, and dancing on the sandy beach, Unity is not to be missed! The success of this community project is owed to member groups and individuals getting involved. Volunteer and vendor applications, (as well as all event details) are online at www.unitymusicfestival.ca
Unity Music Festival is a sweet family festival on the beautiful beach of Slocan City. Held this year from July 14-16, Unity features world and dance music, an eclectic mix of dance, world, folk, electronic, hip hop, reggae, afrobeat music. Performers come from far afield but many are local, in the spirit of supporting talented neighbours. “This area is a hotbed of performing arts. Offering showcase opportunities along with headliners is key to the heart of this project,” say organizers.

You will find this serene 22.7 acre parkland just north of the Winlaw Bridge on the west shore of the Slocan River. The area was once old growth forest made up of cedar, cottonwood, spruce and hemlock. The original forest was logged, and the site burned in the early 1900s. While naturally caused forest fires are a normal part of eco-system rebuilding and continuity, during the mineral rushes, it was not uncommon for prospectors to set fires to swathes of forestlands so as to reveal the underlying rock formations. You can still see large blackened stumps throughout the park’s forest. Before the 1970s the land was used for cattle grazing, and in 1971 the area was designated as a park.
snowshoe or ski, to have picnics, to swim and to build sand castles and visit with each other while the kids play on the swings or chase each other in a game of tag. It is the place to share with guests, to have weddings, to do yoga, to have Art in the Park shows, for open air theatre. The park is also the destination for the famous Slocan River Poker Float that takes place in August. Come and visit! Hike down the path through the shady forest and over the boardwalk, listen for the cry of the eagle, watch the ducks and Canada geese feeding by the shore of the river, have a seat on a riverside bench, breathe the fresh air and relax. Welcome to nature.
Community volunteers have worked hard to maintain it ever since. The beach area includes washrooms, change rooms and a covered gazebo. Two newly-replaced boardwalks over wetland areas are a key part of the trail system, as is the quiet service lane which provides maintenance access. The rest of the park is forest and wetlands with trails meandering along the river and into the forest.
