Balfour was originally a

steamboat terminus for all the mining activities up and down Kootenay Lake. In 1889, a wealthy Englishman named Charles Busk, envisioned Balfour becoming a centre for fruit farming and gardening, and had it surveyed and staked as a townsite. Agriculture did not flourish. Instead, Balfour has survived as a popular area for fishermen, and as the western terminal of the Kootenay Lake Ferry. Today, the Balfour area has a population of over 1200 friendly folks. You won’t see it at first glance, but 60 businesses contribute to the lifeblood of this small town on the outlet of Kootenay Lake.

The prestigious Balfour Golf Course, designed by Les Furber, provides a complete golfing experience. Players will find the front nine carved neatly through a forested region with sand and water hazards strategically placed; while the back nine uses the mountains to add excitment. Stay close by at the Kootenay Lakeview Resort. You can spend your days on the course and come back to a massage or a soak in their large outdoor jacuzzi. This resort is also a favourite for weddings! Its grounds are lovely, the lounge has amazing views, and you are close to all the outdoor recreation the area has to offer.

MV Anscomb

Saturday, July 6th is Homecoming Day in Balfour! Everyone is welcome to join in the party and enjoy the live bands and other local entertainment at the community hall and soccer fields, just off Busk Road. Come hungry – there’s a pancake breakfast to start the day, then a chili cookoff, BBQ and beer garden too. Car buffs can check out the Show & Shine and chat with the owners. Admission is FREE!

The MV Anscomb ferry plied the waters of Kootenay Lake from 1946 until 2000. For a glimpse into the history of travel on Kootenay Lake, take a tour of the restored wheelhouse which is now at the Balfour ferry landing. See items of local historical interest on display as well as ferry and lake artifacts and lore. Open Monday and Tuesday in July and August, 10 am to 2 pm, and longer on holidays.

BALFOUR

Balfour Daze

#ProcterBC ~~~~~ ~~~~~ #HarropBC and lovely area. The ferry to Harrop

Harrop and Procter are connected to the north shore of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake by an on-demand cable ferry. The two communities are about 7 km (4 miles) apart with a main road that connects them.

Just over 600 people live in Harrop and Procter. During the mining boom this area was the transportation hub of the region, the place where the rail line met the historic sternwheelers. Procter is just about right across from the Balfour Ferry, a little bit south on the opposite shore. Together with Balfour, these villages call themselves The Outlet. If you like bike touring on country roads be sure to pencil in a day on your travel calendar for this

Procter is a few kilometres south of the Balfour Ferry landing on Hwy 3A. It’s free and a lovely little 5 minute trip to the other side! Once on land hop on your bike and cycle the 8 km to Procter. Reward yourself with a stop at the Village bakery, settle in to one of the handful of tables inside or out, and treat yourself to brunch or one of their famous cinnamon buns (fresh made Thurs to Sat). Oh my, they are tasty! After you eat, the village of Procter is worth a little walk around. Halfway back to the ferry, swoop into Sunshine Bay Regional Park. Take a dip, do a few whoop-de-doos at the dirt pump park, relax on the beach. What a good day!

West Kootenay Ferries We ride for free! KOOTENAY LAKE FERRY

Connects Highway 3A from Balfour on the west side of the lake to Kootenay Bay on the east side. It is the longest free ferry ride in the world at approximately 35 minutes. See schedule on right.

"Paradise, Canadian Style...

~ Doug Firby of Troy Media, 2015

Once off the ferry heading south towards Creston, you’ll find yourself on a wonderful winding Hwy 3A. This road is built for drivers of cars and motorbikes, and takes an hour to get to Creston. If you'd like to explore al little before you get on the road, take the left turn to the little community of Riondel, home of the Bluebell mining claim infamous for the story of the dastardly act of claim-jumping that precipitated a storm in

the press and even a murder. Riondel is a comparatively quiet town now with a campground, art shop and 9 hole golf course. It offers the visitor a great neighbourhood pub and a sandy beach. Riondel Daze take place the first weekend in August.

Back on 3A and heading south, you will arrive at the small community of Crawford Bay, home to many talented artisans. Along the strip, you will find interesting shops featuring everything from iron work at the forge to blown glass, pottery, wood carving, and more. In addition to the artisans, Crawford Bay also has plenty of accommodations, a championship golf course, hiking trails and a great children’s playground. It’s also home to Starbelly Jam.

#cvklroute

Next, you’ll come upon Gray Creek, famous for its lost gold boulder in the bay, and Kootenay Lake’s oldest and largest general store – the Gray Creek Store.

Boswell had its share of mining camps, but really owes its existence to its fruit orchards, which until the 1930s shipped apples and cherries around the world.

What was that you ask? Stop and turn around and take a tour of the Glass House! It is mostly built from 500,000 embalming fluid bottles... seriously! Kuskanook is a Kootenay Native word for “end of the lake” where the American owned Great Northern Railway met steamships on the lake in the 1800s. It once had the reputation of being the toughest town in Western Canada.

Overlooking little Duck Lake is Sirdar. Here an Italian gold seeker decided to settle, terracing the hillside. Stop at the pub – you can’t miss it, it’s smack dab on the roadside.

Starbelly Jam Come to Crawford Bay Park for the 20th Anniversary of Starbelly Jam! The festival landscape in BC is pushing boundaries as a new audience thirsts for an evolutionary adventure in the music event world. Since its inception back in 1999. Mark your calendar for July 19 & 20. Come early for best camping and take some time to explore this lovely community. Visit starbellyjam.org or follow us at #starbellyjam

Creston Farmer’s Market. Photo - Karma Halleran

Known today as the “Valley of Swans”, Creston has a population of approximately 5300. Surrounding orchards and the rich valley bottomland produce a bounty of fruit, vegetables and grain, and the valley’s gentle slopes are seamed with rows of grapevines. As befits an agricultural hub, your first view of Creston from the north will be the tall wooden granaries. The Visitor Centre is right there too – so pick up a map, and ask about the many different tours around the area. On the main road through Creston there are farmers stands where you can buy

local produce and other products. Creston’s many artists display their work in galleries and gift shops throughout town and there is no shortage of unique shopping and eateries. The valley is also home to Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, several wineries, and a fascinating historical museum showcasing rural life and examples of aboriginal culture. You can learn more about the Lower Kootenay band at lowerkootenay.com.

“Nostrala, one of three cheeses they produce, is styled after the classic Italian cheese fontina, traditionally made in the Italian Alps. Nostrala’s aroma is full with sharp, fruity, fermented notes. The texture is addictive with a supple, pleasing chewiness. The ďŹ rst bite hits you with rich savoury intensity. There’s a sharpness at the edges of the tongue and subtle notes of herbs and fruit....â€? Sue Riedl, The Globe and Mail

At the cheese shop on the farm you may taste the cheese, make purchases, meet the cheese-maker and learn more about how the cheese is made. Explore the farm, peek in the barn and meet the cows, or watch a milking!

Photo - Kootenay Meadows

Kootenay Meadows Farm is certiďŹ ed organic, and uses sustainable management practices. It is well known for the delicious cheeses produced on the farm by the Kootenay Alpine Cheese Company. The company’s own recipes are modeled after the tradition of French and Italian cheese-makers. Months of careful aging of the cheeses and, of course, the milk from the farm’s herd of well-loved cows, combine to ensure the rich, complex avour that is unique to their milk, their farm, and this region.

Open for visits from May until Thanksgiving, Thursday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. The farm is on the corner of Sinclair Road and 16th Street, and right beside Lister Park, just minutes from the town of Creston and the American border. Visit www.kootenaymeadows.com

Wetlands Discovery Centre The Kootenay Columbia Discovery Centre, a 17,000 acre wetland that stretches from the south end of Kootenay Lake to the US border. Over 286 species of birds, 57 species of mammals and 29 species of ďŹ sh, reptiles and amphibians call the wetland home. The whole family will enjoy a day of guided exploring and educational presentations at the centre. The Discovery Centre is open May to October. Take a one-hour guided tour of the waterways and wetlands; your group will be paddling in a voyageur-style (cargo)

canoe. Nighttime walking tours of this lush and active wetland are also available in August. Or just walk along the trails. There are multi-storied wooden viewing towers located along the route that give you breathtaking views of the valley.

At the Centre, check out the programs and events, educational displays, hands-on science lab and live osprey web cam. Call 250-402-8661 to book excursions. Visit discovery-centre.ca for more information.

Creston Farmers Market Every Saturday, from May through October, the Creston Valley Farmers Market offers up fresh, quality produce and everything made, baked or grown in and around the Creston Valley. Find the market at the west end of Canyon Street near the Visitor Centre. Salmo

Your one stop for...

Salmo Salmo today is a quaint town at the junction of two highways – the “Hub of the Kootenays.” There are fishing and swimming holes to be discovered along the picturesque Salmo River, hiking and mountain biking and BMXing at the ski hill, there’s a municipal campground and on any Thursday until the end of September, you can stroll the Farmers Market from 4 to 7 pm, where you will get a taste for the valley and its people. The Village of Ymir sits just 12.5 km north of Salmo on Hwy 6. In 1900, Ymir was a bustling mining town and you can still see some of the old mine workings on the hillsides. Today, Ymir is a laid back town and is extremely family friendly. Paragliders enjoy the air currents

in the valley, mountain bikers can ride a little piece of history and jump on the Trans Canada Trail, which connects Ymir to the greater world (at least to Salmo and Nelson), kayakers run the river rapids, and canoeists paddle the Salmo River through town. Formerly called Salmon Siding, present day Salmo was originally just a whistle stop on the historic Nelson/Fort Shepherd Railway. A century ago Salmo was a mountain boomtown that quickly became a centre for supplies and entertainment for prospectors, miners and loggers. This Salmo Hotel was originally built in 1912. There has been a hotel on this location continuously since 1860.

9 Scenic Holes

Located in the Beaver Valley a short distance from both Trail and Salmo, Fruitvale is known for its lovely natural surroundings. When it was just a railway stop on the great Northern Railroad, it was known as Beaver Siding. In 1906, the land corporation, Fruitvale Limited purchased large tracts on both sides of this stop and changed it's name to Fruitvale. This decision was an important part in the company’s marketing and settlement strategy to depict Fruitvale as the best fruit growing area in the West Kootenay.

Recreation is important in the Beaver Valley area. Facilities include an ice arena, soccer fields, baseball/softball parks, curling rink, bowling alley, horseman’s grounds, and campgrounds. Boating, fishing, cross country skiing, the Champion Lakes Golf & Country Club and Champion Lakes Provincial Park are also popular attractions.

The Log School House The Champion Lakes Golf & Country Club always extends a warm welcome to visitors. You can play 9 or 18 holes in a beautiful setting surrounded by mountains. There is an abundance of trees, a winding creek, rolling hills, 3 ponds and 41 strategically placed bunkers that will test your accuracy. Lessons by a CPGA professional are available ~ please ask! The Club has an excellent licensed restaurant, and also offers on-site overnight parking for self contained RVs. Green fees are $29 for 9 holes and $42 for 18 holes plus GST. Check our web page for specials and events: www.golfchampionlakes.com or phone 250-367-7001. Located on Highway 3, 8 kms east of Fruitvale. Take the Champion Lakes Park Road.

Yay for May Days!

Walk inside this tiny (16′x18′) 1914 log schoolhouse and take a look at the fourth R: Restoration. The desks are topped with old-time books and ink wells. You can almost hear the music from the 1885 piano as you gaze at the woolen Union Jack flag sitting in the corner by the teacher’s kerosene lamp; it seems to be waiting for the students to arrive for school.

The school is 8 km east of Fruitvale on Highway 3B. It was built in 1912 by John Potter Bell on the corner of his property. Believed to be the oldest remaining log school house in the interior of BC, it is now a fully furnished school museum. www.gokootenays.com #gokootenays

Since 1911 Beaver Valley residents have entertained themselves and visitors with their May Day Celebration, held the last weekend in May. Beginning on Friday, the ball tournament gets things swinging, and the fireworks display in the evening ends the day with a bang.

Saturday starts with a pancake breakfast, the parade at noon, followed by the kids’ carnival and the motorcycle show and shine. On Sunday there's a classic car and truck show. Beaver Valley May Days is just plain ol’ good fun! All weekend enjoy live music, vendors, great carnival food and the beer gardens too. The little guys will love the kiddie car ride, over and over again... Visit the website for updates beavervalleymaydays.com.

Beaver Valley Family Park at Marsh Creek can’t be beat. There is so much to do! Small kids will love the playground, for the older kids there are volleyball and basketball courts and a field large enough for football or soccer. If you’ve heard about disc soccer (think frisbee-golf) and have always wanted to try out this fast-growing sport, the park

Champion Lakes Provincial Park has three small lakes. It’s a canoeist’s dream and an ideal place for the whole family, with an adventure playground and the “safe for kids” shallow swimming area. You’ll enjoy the weekend interpretive programs, and the many walking trails. These lakes are regularly stocked with rainbow trout. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the lakes, but powerboats are prohibited. The park is off Hwy 3B between Salmo and Trail, and 5 km east of Fruitvale.

has an 18 hole PDGA standard disc golf course – and it’s free to play! The course, which was designed by Devon Gunn of Grand Forks (one of Canada’s top disc golfers), offers some really challenging holes that will make the course competitive even for the seasoned player. Disc golfing is easy on the body and a whole lot of fun for all ages.

Trail has experienced more than her fair share of flooding. This mural on the wall of the RiverBelle, located at 1350 Esplanade Ave, is a beautiful testament to the people of Trail who always deal with problems as they arise… Photo - Karma Halleran

Five communities hugging both sides of a curve on the fast flowing Columbia River make up Greater Trail. Today about 7700 people call this riverside area home. Trail boasts affordable real estate, an abundance of outdoor activities, superb fishing and an active arts and culture community. The City of Trail has a growing and innovative economy and attracts investors who are intrigued by this rural town with a high-tech mindset.

Today Trail’s growth is due to leadership that is actively looking inward, recognizing and assessing its strengths, and reaching outward in a bold way. In a phrase, the city and its supporting economy is now being promoted worldwide as Metal Tech Alley, which is a “simple” recognition of a more complex fact, that Trail is culturally and historically a mining town. The 1890 discovery of gold and copper ore on the face of Red Mountain was the single most

important event in the history of Trail. In 1898 the first smelter was built to process the Red Mountain ores, and the small town named after the Dewdney Trail grew. It was incorporated in 1901. Citizens of Trail have always been active in sports; it has two baseball teams to represent the city and is home to the famed Smoke Eaters Hockey Club, the last amateur Canadian team to win a world title. The Home of Champions monument downtown recognizes the importance Trail places on excellence in sport.

There are plenty of choices for accommodation in Trail, and the family-run restaurants and groceries boast a marvellous variety of European specialties. So after a day exploring the town, its parks or the great outdoors all around the city, you are sure to find a meal to match your appetite and a comfortable room in which to dream of your next day’s activities.

Sky High Rossland

Rossland’s story began in the 1890s with the discovery of gold. The Le Roi mine was the claim that started a gold rush, and within a decade, the town went from a straggly encampment to a city of 7000. The streets must have echoed night and day with the sounds of hammers and boards being sawn. Two and three-storey buildings with balconies, false fronts and turrets were put up as fast as the timber could be felled and milled. Some of these 1890s buildings still exist (the Miner’s Hall, for example, and the buildings on Washington Street) but after a disastrous fire in 1902, it was decreed by city bylaw that future buildings be constructed using brick.

The population of 3,729 is half what it once was, but despite the 21st century, there are no still no traffic lights or sprawling malls. Visit the City of Rossland and find out what living in a mountain town is all about!

Get Outside! Today, Rossland is experiencing a second boom. During the winter, Red Mountain Resort is a magnet for skiers and snowboarders. When the snow melts, the mountain bikers own the slopes for the spring and summer. With so many existing advantages – old whiskey-running routes, miners’ trails (the “rawhide” trails), the winding roadbeds from long disused narrow gauge railways – the biking scene has exploded in recent years.

More than 20 trails are graded, so choosing the right trail for your skills and attitude is easy. Rossland’s most famous mountain biking trail is the Seven Summits, an all-natural terrain trail with no stunts or constructions. It doesn’t need them – it’s carved on the backsides and ridges of the mountains themselves, including sweeping alpine meadows, and their rocky scree underbellies. Lung-busting climbs alternate with exciting descents.

Most of Rossland’s trails are in the remote backcountry, with only intermittent cell phone coverage and little fresh water. Travel with a friend; then when you get back home and you can’t stop talking about your experience, there will be someone else who feels the same way! For more information visit mountainbikingbc.ca or www.tourismrossland.com. A less extreme way to enjoy Rossland's outdoors is to play disc golf. Thin Air is 18 "holes' of fun and gets you into the spectacular landscape, encouraging the young and old alike, to act like kids again! Best of all, it’s free!

The course is at the Blackjack Ski area, 5 km or so up Hwy 22 from the Visitor Centre and Rossland Museum. You can buy your discs, and pick up a brochure explaining the course and how to play, at Seven Summits Service, just across the road from the museum.

Take a travel break - Skate & Bike Parks

Ride or Glide!

Beaver Valley: This all wheel

skatepark in Montrose was designed by Newline Skateparks. It’s adjacent to a major bus route so kids can hop on the bus from Rossland or Castlegar. There are also washroom amenities on site.

Castlegar: The largest bike park in the West Kootenay is at 110 5 St. in Millennium Park. Three masterpiece pump tracks built by Dig Designs feature progressive levels of dirt jumps, pump tracks, a flow trail and a technical zone – all designed to challenge riders of every skill level. So much fun! Kaslo: Kaslo’s skatepark is

right on the beach in Vimy Park. BMX or board or scooter. Toddlers to adults love this

park. Get wet when you are done! Kaslo’s family pump park is on the river trail system. From downtown Kaslo head upriver on the north side trail. Watch for the skills park sign on the left, or continue straight up to access the top level pump park which is now connected to the lower track with a beautifully bermed trail.

Nakusp: The skatepark of

Nakusp is a street style park, designed by Newline, and built by the local community.

Nelson: The 15,000 sq ft Nel-

son Skatepark is stacked with features and the Nelson Bike Park offers challenging BMX biking. Find both at the Art Gib-

Wikipedia Fact Check

Skateboarding, as we know it, was probably born sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s when surfers in California wanted something to do when the waves were flat. In 2016, it was announced that skateboarding will be represented at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Nelson International Mural Fest is going into its second year. The Nelson District Arts Council recognizes the successful increase of cultural vibrancy created in the

New Denver: No bike park

here, but you can’t beat the Galena Trail for family fun. Get dropped off at 3 Forks and ride down into town. Historic!

Rossland: Bike Skills Park at Esling and Irwin Drive. This beginner to intermediate skills park includes ramps, jumps, ladders, boardwalks, hills and a large backboard. Salmo: Check out the small bike skills area at KP Park downtown in Salmo. There are dirt jumps, a pump track and a few easy wood features. Salmo is also home to West Kootenay BMX – find it at 434 Ski Hill Road, and an indoor skate park is located at 206 Seventh Street, in the community centre.

Trail: A new and long-anticipated addition to Gyro Park. The Trail SK8 Park is a topnotch facility with 13 features including a large bowl, half pipes and rails. Village of Slocan: The

skatepark in Slocan is called TENACITY. Find it near the intersection of Harold Street and Giffin Ave.

Warfield: There is a little pump park in Warfield near Webster Elementary School. All of Warfield’s parks are connected by trails and these are connected to the wider system of hiking and biking trails that take you into the high country. Ymir: The Ymir skatepark is

a hub of activity from spring to fall. Located between the river and the commercial block downtown.

In the heart of the Kootenays, at the confluence of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers, is the City of Castlegar. The city’s waterway location has had a great influence on the historic and cultural evolution of the community. The area was initially used as a trading and fishing area for First Nations people. Zuckerberg Island, separated from downtown Castlegar by a pedestrian suspension bridge, has paths and interpretive signs and features a reconstruction of the Salish

semi-pit-style winter dwellings of Castlegar’s first people.

If you’re a visitor to Castlegar, there is a lot to go and do. Castlegar is “The Sculpture Capital of Canada™”. Downtown is a must see with over fifty pieces on display along the sidewalks and in the green spaces. Spend an afternoon or the whole day exploring Millennium Park, the walkway along the shore and Zuckerberg Island. In the hills around Castlegar the adventure recreation possibilities are

limitless: hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, trail running … and the river and lake fishing is legendary.

Castlegar boasts some very good restaurants and shops, there are three golf courses nearby, several art galleries and historical museums and Chances Gaming centre, which is right next door to the West Kootenay Regional Airport. You can downCastlegar Explorers

The Brilliant Bridge

The Brilliant Bridge was built in 1913 to cross the Columbia River, joining the Doukhobor community of Brilliant to the growing city of Castlegar. A piece of heroic construction, it nevertheless fell into disuse after a new and wider concrete bridge was built.

The new idea for the future of the bridge was to convert it to a “walking bridge”, not for vehicular traffic. With tremendous support from businesses and government and years and years of perseverance by the working group, construction began. The grand re-opening celebration of the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge happened in 2010. For more information on the reconstruction, photos and history of the bridge, please see www.brilliantbridge.ca

The Wealth Of The Columbia

Growing up in the West Kootenay, with all its beautiful and various stretches of water, learning to love fishing comes naturally. From the main part of Kootenay Lake and all its tributaries, to its west arm and the Kootenay River, the opportunities to cast your rod seem endless. The mighty Columbia River, though, is the river that will always beckon the avid fisherman. It’s an amazing highway system for rainbow trout, walleye, northern pike, and whitefish, just to name a few. The interactions between the runs of fishes, the timing of the insect blooms they feed upon, and the complex flow patterns in the river, result in a fishery that is endlessly challenging and always rewarding. Near Castlegar, there are dozens of excellent holes and back eddies that have proven to be very productive. Beneath the railway bridge at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers is one spot that is definitely worth checking out. Or try casting in the large back eddy by Little Bear Golf Course. You’ll also enjoy some great fishing from the shores of the Columbia within Castlegar city limits. BC Canada

Wild Or Easy – You Pick!

The mountain biking and trail building scene in and around Castlegar is on a high these days. Ironically, the area’s relatively low elevation works to the advantage of Castlegar riders. Since it’s lower than Rossland, the season for snow-free riding is that much longer. The Castlegar Parks and Trails Society has already achieved a lot and has ambitious plans for this season. The trails and structures at the bike skills park in Millennium Park are almost complete. Even if you don’t have your bike with you, go and see what a challenge the skills park presents to bikers both young and old. www.destinationcastlegar.com/biking

Canada Day

Join over 100 paddlers for the Canada Day Paddle Parade! Meet at Lions Head Pub on July 1st at 11 am with your own kayak, canoe, SUP or paddle craft. The parade winds up in Genelle at around 2:30 pm. Be sure to arrange shuttle for your return to the Lions Head where your vehicle is.

Participating in the Paddle Parade is free or you can book a spot on a raft for $25. You can also rent a craft, inflatable kayak (singles & doubles) or paddle board with all the safety equipment. The fee includes the ride back! Endless Adventure also rents life jackets for $5. Contact Endless Adventure 250-3598181 to take part in this super fun event!

A Dam Visit

Dams on the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers provide electricity for nearly half of British Columbia as well as parts of the United States. Eleven of those dams are within easy driving distance of Castlegar and it makes a fascinating day trip to visit some or all of them. Several of these monumental dams can be viewed along Highway 3A, and further down Broadwater Road in the Robson area.

What else is there to do? Do Sculpturewalk: Castlegar is recognized as the Sculpture Capital of Canada™. Get maps at the Visitor Centre or local businesses.

Do Music in the Park: Summer music concerts every Wednesday evening at 7 pm. Bring your lawn chairs. Concession on site (Kinnaird Park,14th Ave.),

Do Golfing: The Castlegar Golf Club is a 4 star course that has hosted the provincial Ladies’, Men’s, Senior and Junior Championship events (visit their website at www.golfcastlegar.com); and the Little Bear Golf Course, a 9-hole executive par 3 course, is located at 872 Waterloo Road.

Inside The Complex

The indoor aquatic facility includes a 25 metre 6 lane pool and a zero depth tots’ spray pool. Special features in the Aquatic Centre are a swing rope and a slide in the main pool. Both pools are wheelchair accessible. In addition, The Complex offers a steam room, whirlpool, dance studio, weight room and outdoor patio.

The Arena seats 1,050 and features an NHL regulation-sized ice surface. The ice season runs from August to March. In the remaining months, from April through to July, the arena floor is dry and available for circuses, exhibitions and trade shows, like the CANADIAN PEONY SHOW June 20 to 23, 2019.

The Station Museum

At Castlegar’s Station Museum you can share in the rich and colourful history of this vibrant Kootenay hub. Built in 1902 as part of Canadian Pacific Railway’s BC network... burned to ground in 1906, then rebuilt in 1907 - the station... is now home to heirlooms and artifacts offering a glimpse into a bygone era. A refurbished caboose (the city’s

inside...

first jail cell) provides a nifty backdrop for selfies to share and commemorate your trek through time. Open 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday – Saturday from April through to October, and seven days a week during July, August and September!

Doukhobor Discovery Centre

In 1908 the largest internal migration in Canada took place when 5,000 Doukhobors moved from Saskatchewan to the Castlegar area. The community had little choice but to leave the prairie province, after the government seized the land where they had originally sought refuge from persecution in their native Russia. Their leader, Peter V. Verigin led his people to the river valley he called Dolina Ootischenia, the Valley of Consolation, and negotiated the purchase of land that soon grew to 14,000 acres. On this land the Doukhobors built a successful agrarian commune based on the motto of “Toil and the Peaceful Life”. The orchard land first purchased in 1908 is the setting for the Discovery Centre. Inside the ten buildings of this

recreated and restored community you will see over 1,000 examples of arts and crafts, customs and religion of their communal lifestyle. You will be transported back in time when you step into the restored home with unique features that kept several generations warm and well fed. www.Doukhobor-Museum.org

Shop!

The downtown area of Castlegar is made for strolling. Besides all the artwork and the sculptures that you will find on ’most any corner, there are many Mom-and-Pop shops and restaurants. Further up on Columbia Avenue a couple of small malls with stores and offices cater to particular needs (like fishing gear, sports equipment and fancy underwear), and some larger national stores and chain restaurants. If you want something fun as a gift or a souvenir, or if you need something practical or you’re hungry, you will find it in Castlegar – uptown or downtown.

Kootenay Gallery Of Art

The Gallery, a unique public institution in the Kootenays, is located across from the airport in Castlegar. It provides a professional venue for regional artists to show and sell their work. The gallery features two conjoined exhibition spaces, and presents the work of local artists as well as hosting touring shows.

Outside the gallery are the butterfly and xeriscape gardens. Over the years, the butterfly garden has proved a valuable teaching tool, and has attracted some rarely seen species such as the western tiger swallowtail, pale swallowtail and grey hairstreak.

Hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm. Admission to exhibitions is only $2 for adults; seniors and students only $1; for members and children the admission is free. Visit www.kootenaygallery.com to find out what’s on exhibit.

Fishing The Columbia River

The Columbia River system around Castlegar has an excellent fishery that offers multiple species, from rainbow trout and walleye to bass and whitefish. There are sturgeon as well, but they are protected. If you catch one by mistake, let it live! RAINBOW TROUT are the species that most fishermen in the area target. The Columbia is teeming with these beautiful, strong and feisty fish. Castlegar’s guides and outfitters have the equipment, locations and knowledge to help you to hook into a gorgeous rainbow.

WALLEYE FISHING The Columbia River in Castlegar is home to one of the best walleye fisheries in all of western Canada. The best time of the year for fishing walleye is from late August until mid October.

Millennium Park

This amazing riverside park is the pride and joy of Castlegar and you can walk to it from anywhere in downtown. The natural ponds, complete with sandy beaches and grassy areas for lounging, are a calm and welcoming apron along the shore of the wild and powerful Columbia river. Bring a picnic or buy a snack at the concession, and stay a while.

Hiking & Biking

The hiking in Castlegar is world-class. There’s everything from strolls along sandy beaches to epic romps in the alpine. Check these out!

SCATTEBO REACH This is a fairly long, sometimes rocky trail of intermediate skill level that follows the Kootenay River to Glade.

MELDEANNA An easy to intermediate trail, it is both bike and dog friendly. It is a 5 km loop, level and shaded, and great for bird watching. BRILLIANT OVERLOOK This is a dog friendly but difficult and challenging climb up the back of the bluff on the east side of the Kootenay River. It is not bike friendly. For more trails and information visit https://friendsoftrails.org

Kinsmen Spray Park

Family tired of travelling? Come and enjoy Castlegar’s spray pool located in Kinsmen Park. It is open from May until mid-September from 9 am to 9 pm daily.

Zuckerberg Island

Spend a beautiful afternoon at Zuckerberg Island, a tiny oasis cradled in the embrace of the mighty Columbia River. Lush gardens and winding pathways promise visitors a serene welcome to a world removed from the hustle-and-bustle, just minutes from the city’s downtown core.

Even on the flat, calm waters of the lakes in the Castlegar area, there are important safety precautions and regulations all paddlers should abide by. Firstly, Transport Canada mandates that, by law, all paddlers, whether in a canoe, raft, kayak or on a SUP must have the following:

• Tread lightly on loose rocks, wear proper footwear

This popular spot is the only fully developed provincial park on the south end of the Arrow Lakes Reservoir. It offers camping on the lake shore, with 61 campsites, of which 30 can be reserved in advance, 3 double campsites, beaches, fishing, nature walks and an adventure playground. Two nearby marinas offer boat rentals and one has a store to satisfy most camping and fishing needs.

Craft brewing universally involves boldly flavoured beers coupled with a defiantly independent spirit. Garrett Oliver, in the Oxford Companion to Beer That’s true as far as it goes, no doubt. But I want to add that there is always a dash of humour that goes along with that boldness of the brew. There is something about the alternately brassy and comforting experience of drinking craft beer in a brew pub that tickles the irony bone. Kootenay Rockies brewers may take their brewing very seriously, but not themselves. The logo for the Angry Hen in Kaslo is a frumpy chicken with a cleaver. Ask Manon or Andy, the Hen’s co-owners along with brewmasters Shirley and Frances, about the origin of the name and you may or may not get a straight answer. I’m sure the gigantic hop-flower-shaped pendant lamps have heard it all. In all mock seriousness, the mission of Nelson Brewery Company is: Brew unto others as they would brew unto you. The Angry Hen’s slogan is more to the point: Just Shut Up and Drink It, while the motto of the Trail Beer Refinery is Work Hard Play Harder. Not a problem after downing a pint of Holy Hefeweizen.

Names of the beers!

Brewers are a whimsical bunch when it comes to naming their products. That’s especially so when it comes to the seasonal brews. Some fun local beer BC Canada

sented, from execs to mountain bikers (who can be one and the same) and they’re all sharing a table or a counter.

The more you know If you’re like me and have a bit of an anthropological bent, the best people-watching is at Backroads. There’s a bar right at the big picture window that faces onto Nelson’s main drag, Baker Street. In the summer, their streetside patio is the place to quaff your brew. Beware of a quirky BC law that applies here – you can buy your beer at the taps, and walk with it to a table, but to cross the public sidewalk with a beer requires the help of a professional (the staff will let you know.)

Don’t forget to eat! At the five breweries on the map opposite, the food choices are as original and tasty as the beer. The Angry Hen, Nelson Brewing Company and Backroads Brewery don’t have kitchens, but they do bring in some very creative fare prepared by local cooks and served hot (or cold) alongside your pint. The fare served by Torchlight and the Trail Beer Refinery will make you wish you had an alternate reality life and could eat twice.

Of course you do! Here are a few ideas on how to spend some quality time in Nelson, and perhaps do something you haven’t done before - or at least not with such style. DROP IN TO A DANCE CLASS at Front Street Dance (612 Front Street.) No registration is required. Check the schedule for Ballet, Jazz or Broadway, whatever your inclination. www.frontstreetdance.ca

PADDLE Wind down with a relaxing late afternoon/evening paddle. This 2 hour paddle takes off from beautiful Lakeside Park. Travel upstream under what locals call BOB (the big orange bridge) and come back floating over still waters towards a setting sun. www.kootenaykayak.com CATCH A MOVIE at the restored Civic Theatre on Vernon Street. That may sound ho-hum, but you will find that the movie selection is not, and the graceful Art Deco building has an elegance that makes you want to move more graciously to match the ambiance. Order your popcorn with nutritional yeast, s’il vous plait.

FLOW JAMZ TUESDAYS at 7 pm all summer. Head down to Lakeside Park by the Big Orange Bridge and join in with the hoopers and jugglers and the neo-circus dancers who call their discipline Flow, and themselves flow artists. Not familiar with terms like poi or devil sticks? These props can be seen at Lakeside Park on Tuesday evenings or occasionally at Taghum Beach just 10 km or so west of Nelson.

TUESDAY NIGHT LADIES’ RIDE Shuttle and group bicycle ride every Tuesday night (until Sept. 18) leaving from Sacred Ride on Baker Street at 5:30 pm. Nicole Walker and Jenny Petersen will be there providing pointers and high levels of STOKE. The ride is followed by a post-ride pop at one of the local breweries! $25 per night. LAZER TAG If you’re a gang, lazer tag is a fun way to get your ya-yas out. After an afternoon running around outside and virtually shooting each other, you’ll have a good appetite for all of Nelson’s amazing eateries or brew pubs. Lazer tag combines the classic games of hide-and-seek and tag with a high tech twist. Nelson’s City Parks

GYRO PARK is located in the heart of Nelson on Gyro Park Road. Its a bit of a climb, but once you make your way up to Gyro Park you are greeted by spectacular views of the city below and the West Arm of Kootenay Lake to the northeast. On a hot summer day, take yourself and your kids to the swimming pool. This pool is for younger children and shallow at both ends. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.

COTTONWOOD FALLS (above) On Saturdays, in the warm months of the year, head to this park for the market. At any time, this park is made for strolling. Designed to evoke the experience you might have contemplating a garden in Japan, the Friendship Garden is the gardening equivalent of a hug between Nelson and its sister city, Shuzenji, Japan.

The little bridge crossing Cottonwood Creek is modeled after the larger bridge crossing the Katsura River in Japan, and cherry trees have been planted on the slopes. At the end of the park is a beautiful waterfall. With the run-off from the sno-topped mountains that tower above Nelson the waterfall is at its most spectacular in spring and early summer.

LAKESIDE PARK Located at the foot of the big orange bridge (BOB), this park is the place to swim, play soccer or tennis, or wander through the gardens and see what’s in bloom. There is even a labyrinth if you’re in the mood for contemplation. A long, beautiful beach, adventure playground, summertime concession, large open green spaces and mature trees provide an expansive backdrop to your stroll or picnic stop. LIONS PARK You will find this tidy little green-space gem in upper Nelson on Kootenay Street between Richards and Delbruck. Part sunny, part shady, with picnic tables, playground equipment and a spray park, it is a great place to stretch and run your kids and dogs!

The Nelson Electric Tramway Society was formed in 1988 and soon the vision to have Streetcar 23 back “on track” started to become a reality. The car made its second debut in 1992, carrying over 20,000 people in four months. Today there are over 70 volunteers who look after all aspects of the operation and new members are always welcome. These people make it possible for you to relive the past with a ride along the shore of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake from the Prestige Inn to Lakeside Park, two kilometres of relaxing nostalgia. The fares are modest and the ride is great fun.

Nelson’s electric streetcars first started running in 1899. The line was only five miles long and could boast only three cars, but it served the city faithfully for 50 years. After the Second World War, the electric tramway service was replaced by buses. Car 23 was repurposed as a gift shop, a storage shed, even a dog kennel before it was rescued and restoration began.

Looking down the length of Baker Street, you might think it will only take five minutes to go from one end to the other, and back. Three hours later you still haven’t had time to explore all the art and craft shops, the bookstores, the hip home furnishing outlets, the funky and fine clothing boutiques, to say nothing of trying out the restaurants and coffee bars housed in some of the antique buildings that line both sides of the street. Be kind to yourself... take your time, and treasure will be yours!

Village of Slocan

At the southern end of Slocan Lake lies the lakeshore village of Slocan, “Gateway to the Valhallas”. A farmers market is held every Sunday at 10 am in the heart of town, beginning in June. The trailhead for Valhalla Provincial Park’s Slocan Lakeshore Trail is on the west side of the river. Nearby, a sandy beach on the lake is the best place to be on a hot summer’s day.

Winlaw

The traditional lumbering and farming roots of this village on the east shore of the Slocan River have nourished a diverse community of originals. It’s probably the funkiest little town in the Slocan Valley.

Silverton

Silverton “The Beautiful” was first settled in 1892 by lead and silver miners working the south face of Idaho Mountain. The galena ore was packed down to Silverton on horseback or, in the winter, by “rawhiding”. The ore would get loaded and lashed into the hide of a steer and get pulled downhill like a toboggan. That packhorse trail is now called the Wakefield trail and it’s a spectacular, demanding, hike to Idaho peak. Silverton has a 40-site campground with boat launch, and an interesting museum that is worth a visit even when it’s closed, since many of the mining artifacts from the silver rush days are outside. Wander across the highway to the bustling Silverton Building Supplies, a mercantile that hearkens back to the good old days! It has all your summer supplies and then some – from fishing licences to board games!

Clean, comfortable, fully equipped cottages with kitchens & baths. Spacious campsites in forested setting with hot showers and partial hookups. Recreation area, spa, WiFi, small beach. 5370 Cedar Creek Road, Winlaw

Dramatic mountain vistas, lakes, the serene beauty of the Slocan River, winding roads and friendly villages all combine to make the Slocan Valley a peaceful and inspiring place to visit. The Slocan River was used as a transportation route by aboriginal people, miners and loggers. The Slocan Valley Rail Trail is a beloved local feature developed from an old rail line that follows the curves of the Slocan River. Other popular recreation areas in the valley include the Winlaw Nature Park and the Walter Clough Wildlife Area.

Every year on July 1st, Silverton hosts a grand Canada Day celebration. Enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast, then watch the parade as it makes its way to the fairgrounds. This is where your children can play supervised games for prizes and you can cheer on your favourite team in the Dick Hambly Annual Bocce Tournament while enjoying a beverage in the open beer gardens. Join in for a rousing singing of “Oh Canada” before the May Queen cuts the cake. #SilvertonBC

Prospectors arrived in New Denver in 1892 and cobbled together the beginnings of a town. The name they gave to what was hardly more than a camp with only a few wooden buildings was El Dorado City. Early hopes were that the settlement would soon rival the boomtown cities that had sprung up during the California gold rush, but the golden moniker, in the absence of a major gold strike, was soon to change. The name that eventually stuck was another promotional effort, this time attempting to borrow the allure of Denver, Colorado. The Silvery Slocan Museum in the old Bank of Montreal building at the bottom of Main Street is the place to get an introduction to this turbulent early history.

The Arts Have It

If you love the fine arts, the small communities of New Denver and Silverton may become your own personal rural and remote New York. For a small fee you can – try your hand at the various fibre arts on display! Workshops will offer quilting, knitting, spinning, rug hooking, dyeing, and felting (wet and needle). A highlight of the festival is the Saturday “Yarn Tasting” at the Bosun Hall. Wine, cheeses, yarn samples, SWAG and prizes are all part of the fun! One of the first things you can do upon arriving in Nakusp is take a stroll along the paved path that follows the shoreline of upper Arrow Lake. The landscaping, the view, the beach, the fact that you can walk from one end of town to the other and feel energized rather than tired – this is just the beginning of why residents of Nakusp love their town. There is always lots to do in Nakusp and the surrounding area. Fishing, boating, swimming, snorkelling, walking, hiking, biking, camping and golfing. For a more leisurely adventure, check out the many downtown shops and restaurants, or have a soak in the hot springs. If you’re in Nakusp on a Wednesday evening in the summer, head to the gazebo in the park for live music. Go to the Visitor Centre for all the info you need to set up your day. Be sure to reserve some time for the museum next door. Of special interest is the new 3,650 sq ft addition to the museum that is dedicated to telling the Sinixt story, from the last Ice Age to the present day. There is a lot to see and take in, including a diorama and a tule tipi made of woven bulrush reeds.

Historic Leland Hotel

The Leland Hotel was the second hotel in Nakusp. Built in 1892, it served the railway workers, merchants, and shipbuilding crews who poured into the new town but at first had nowhere to live. Today the Leland is British Columbia’s oldest operating hotel! BC Canada

Nakusp Hot Springs

Tucked away in the Selkirk mountains, the Nakusp Hot Springs resort is the pride of the village. The circular shaped hot springs pool is housed in an ampitheatre-like structure above Kuskanax Creek. The large side of the pool contains warm water, while the small side is for bathers who like it hot! After enjoying the soothing waters, go hiking and mountain biking, or camp at the resort’s campground in the serene setting of old growth cedars and hemlocks on Kuskanax Creek. Check out the website, www. nakusphotsprings.com or 1-250265-4528.

Hot Springs Hikes

Starting in the Nakusp Hot Springs parking lot, hikers can choose trails ranging from short to long, level to steep. Begin on the pet friendly, wheelchair accessible trail leading to the newly built Kuskananx foot bridge. On the far side of the bridge you can view a spectacular waterfall, check out the source of the resort’s mineral water, view the cathedral cedars in the area, swim in an alpine lake or walk along the 8.5 kilometres of cross country trails, all the way back into the village, if you wish. Maps can be picked up at the Nakusp Hot Springs lobby or at the visitor centre on 6th Avenue NW, downtown Nakusp. After your day of hiking, come for a relaxing soak or stay in the campground or cedar chalets for more days of exploring.

Valley of the Ghosts. In the 1890s, at the time of the major North American gold and silver rushes, this rugged and steep-sided valley between New Denver and Kaslo was known as the Silvery Slocan. Mines and claims dotted the hillside, railways and roads were hacked through the dense forest, mineral concentrators of enormous size sprang up, built quickly out of green timber. And Sandon, perched way up a mountainside, was a bumping boomtown with banks, brothels and bars. From a one-time population of thousands, there are now only a few pockets where people still live. But the abandoned railway beds and pack horse trails are fascinating routes for hikers and mountain bikers. Highway 31A, from New Denver to Kaslo is a top-ten in Canada favourite for motorbikers. But going slowly, and taking side trips in the Valley of the Ghosts has rewards that will feed your spirit long after you’ve rejoined civilization. BC Canada

When the sun lit up the sky as it set behind Sandon’s historic City Hall, the fabulous acoustics of the valley merged with a visual drama more powerful than any modern light show.

Take the Wagon Road

On foot or on two wheels, the old Wagon Road now extends from Kaslo to Three Forks. The grades are gentle and you can mostly ride side-by-side. Start in Kaslo at the trailhead at the top of Zwicky Road or at several points along Hwy 31A.

Unforgettable.

#PicturePerfectKaslo For a village of under 1,000 people, Kaslo celebrates a lot. May Days, Jazzfest and IdidaRide & Run in August, ... the Kaslo Jamboree in December and the Winter in the Forest Festival in February are just some of what goes on in the active community. This is not just the contemporary face of Kaslo, either – in the 1890s Kaslo was often called “The City of Energy.” Perhaps it’s relative isolation from other larger cultural centres that both inspires and provides the stimulus needed for the community to create it’s own fun - necessity IS the mother of all invention, after all. It’s an easy place to fall in love with; the beauty of its setting is almost overwhelming at first. Looking across the brilliant clear water of Kootenay Lake at the mountains opposite, the Purcells appear unmarked by roads and man-made structures. The forested slopes beckon hikers, mountain bikers and backcountry skiers, and provide inspiration for musicians and artists. Kaslo kids grow up with the lake as their front yard and the bush as their backyard. All that wildness fosters a sense of adventure, an urge to get out there. Come to Kaslo for a rest, a dose of inspiration, or to get your pulse racing on the lake or in the back country. Come for a day, a week or forever – you’ll be welcome!

Jazz is in the name, but in the last 26 years and counting, the scope of the music has broadened – grown outward, spilling over the lake and into Kaslo’s downtown, reinvigorating the beaches and pop-up campsites with it’s summer vibe. You could talk for hours about that.” Festival goers will discover a diversity of musical genres and quality sound, a laid-back and family friendly environment, delivered by truly exceptional talent slike Buffy Sainte-Marie. Kaslo’s iDIDaRide & Run is a five event mountain bike and trail running race, to be held Saturday, August 10 on the fabulous Kaslo and area trail network. This is the third year for this event and offers something for every member of the family. Bike races of 8, 20 and 40 km as well as running races of 8 and 20 km are on the menu. More than 100 athletes signed up the first year, and 19% more the second year. Participants came from as far away as England to compete on the world-class single track around Kaslo. Some starts and all the finishes are at the logger sports grounds, situated on the shores of Kootenay Lake. The venue is unparalleled in beauty. Many a racer last year happily went straight into the lake upon finishing. The five events offer a variety that make it “a day” for all. From novice riders and runners to the most experienced athlete competing in the longer races, everyone will be challenged and satisfied at the end of the day. The feedback from last year gives clear evidence that the growth of IDIDa-Ride will continue to be exponential. Mark it on your calendar and book the time off you need to take part in BC’s hottest new event! Register online at www.iDIDaride-kaslo.ca

Golf

At the Kaslo Golf Club there is a spectacular view at each of the nine holes. The course has rolling hills, well conditioned greens and defined fairways. Sand in the bunkers is carefully maintained. There is a picturesque water hazard adjacent to the 9th green that has a waterfall and an accurate scale model of the SS Moyie. The club also has a driving net and a practice green. The timber frame clubhouse features a fully licensed restaurant with a varied menu. Dine inside or on the covered patio where you can relax and enjoy the view. The clubhouse is open from April to October, dependent on seasonal weather. At the Kaslo Golf Club you do not usually have to pre-book tee times – come when you want to play, register and start in order of arrival. There are rental clubs and pull and power carts, and motorcyclists can get free club rentals.

SS Moyie

The Sweetheart-of-the-Lake is embarking on a journey through history and you are invited. For nearly 60 years, the SS Moyie and her sister ships provided a transportation lifeline to the many isolated communities on Kootenay Lake, literally opening the Kootenay region to miners, businesses, farmers and pioneer families. When the Moyie was launched on October 22, 1898, there were no roads or trains into these remote mountain valleys. When the SS Moyie was finally dry docked in 1957 the Village of Kaslo purchased her from the CPR for the grand sum of $1. Now a designated National Historic Site and BC Landmark, the sternwheeler is open daily for guided or self-guided tours from Mother’s Day through to Thanksgiving weekend. She is also home to the Kaslo Visitor Centre. Visit her at 324 Front Street, Kaslo.

Kaslo’s recreational trail system is the pride and joy of her residents. The trails are so numerous, with so many options for access, that you rarely bump into other users as you walk, ride or run the various routes. KASLO RIVER TRAIL Bracketed by two beet-red bridges, this riverside loop can be traversed in under an hour. Starting at the south end of Higashi Way in downtown Kaslo, head west along the north side of the river towards the Trailblazer Bridge. The first section of the north side trail is wide, with shallow grades and interpretive signage, making it family friendly and, for much of the way, wheelchair accessible. Halfway to the bridge is the Family Pump Park, which is lots of fun for mountain bikers young and old. If you keep going west along the riverside after crossing the Trailblazer Bridge, you’ll be travelling the Lettrari Loop. If it’s a hot summer day, you’ll love this section. There are wooden boardwalks and a couple of little bridges to cross, with deeply shady spots where you can stop and cool your toes in the icy water. In early summer the Kaslo River is at its wildest, and the damp forest floor is spangled with the white-petalled Queen’s cup. The path eventually leaves the river, and climbs steeply to the Kaslo airstrip and the True Blue Recreation Area. TRUE BLUE TRAILS There is a lot of variety on the multi-purpose trails above the airport in the True Blue Recreation Area, with many trails of various difficulty. The Spanish Moss trail is one of our favourites to walk or mountain bike! If you take Straightface you can connect to I’ll Call Rusty, a trail which heads west, then does a big loop to return you to the south side of the River Trail. Wooden bridges and boardwalks carry you over ephemeral streams, brooks and boggy BC Canada

areas, which is fun for the hiker or fairly confident mountain biker. To get to the True Blue Recreation Area, take Hwy 31 heading south out of Kaslo, and turning right on Balfour Ave. Follow Balfour Ave up the hill until you reach the gravel pit on the left. Look for the sign indicating the True Blue Recreation Area. THE MONSTER – This is a downhill mountain bike trail that leads from the top of Mt. Buchanan to the valley bottom. This trail is rated difficult and not for beginners.

ACCESS TRAIL – You can begin this trail from four different points: the top of Wardner St in Kaslo; off Hwy 31 north of town just before the brake check and again just past the brake check by turning left up Branch 7; or from the highway to New Denver, at the intersection of Wagon Road and Nordic Ski area, about 3 km west of Kaslo. The trail takes about 4 hours to hike, and less on bike. A great hiking trail and a challenging mountain bike - it is part of the iDIDaRide 40 km. Pick up your copy of the Visit Kaslo & Area Guide at the Kaslo InfoCentre, or just about anywhere around town. It has a detailed map of the trails and local communities to help you get around. Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort

Today, the site of an ancient natural hot springs is home to the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort. In a pleasing circularity, the resort is now owned and operated by the Lower Kootenay First Nations Band. They are proud to bring their unique warmth to the hospitality you will experience when you stay at the resort. Staying at the hotel means you have exclusive use of the healing waters in the mornings before 10 am. Float in the steaming open-air pool,

then wade into the horseshoe-shaped cave, where the darkness, the mineral deposits and the humidity all combine to offer an exhilarating experience. A hot steamy, odourless shower of mineralized water falls from the cave’s roof and forms a waist-deep pool, providing a rejuvenating natural steam bath. For the brave of heart, there is also a streamfed cold plunge. The Hot Springs restaurant has been recently renovated; the wall of windows overlooking Kootenay Lake offers spectacular views. The resort’s

regulars give rave reviews about the new menu which features First Nations inspired cuisine. Their salads are

Woodbury/Ainsworth Hot Springs

Cody Caves

Deep into the slope above Ainsworth Hot Springs, Cody Caves was discovered in the late 1800s by Henry Cody, of Prince Edward Island. It became a popular destination for adventurous residents of Kootenay Lake throughout the 1900s and was made into a Provincial Park in 1964. As the only low elevation cave in the West Kootenay, its guided tours make an excellent introduction to caving for visitors. The limestone cave displays an impressive array of ancient calcite formations, growing at the slow rate of approximately one cubic centimetre each century. Up to 500 metres of passageway are safely accessible for tourism activity. Visitors experience underground waterfalls and ancient limestone passages carved by flowing water. Cody Cave Tours offers a variety of caving adventures for those ages five and up. Visitors should be reasonably fit. Warm clothes and sturdy footwear are important for spelunking comfort. Reservations are required. For more information visit www.codycavetours.com or call 250359-CAVE (2283). A fascinating journey into the fragile underworld of Cody Caves awaits you.

Woodbury

It takes less than 5 minutes to drive north from Ainsworth to Woodbury Resort. The early history of this tiny lakeshore community, as with many settlements along Kootenay Lake, is inextricably linked with mining. In 1897, the length of Woodbury Creek was the site of a mining boom. Prospectors staked and then worked their claims all along the creek for kilometres up into the mountains. But the boom didn’t last, the mining declined and the prospectors eventually went elsewhere. Today, Woodbury is home to the thriving resort and marina, and the well-known Jones Boys Boats, which offers boat sales and service. When you arrive, head into JB’s Pub and enjoy a meal. Linger over dinner and later chat with the locals in the fun and laid-back atmosphere. The resort, a natural playground, is open year round. It has everything from boat rentals and camping to a restaurant, store, chalet rentals, a recreation hall and a swimming pool. Fishing is excellent in general, but is at its best in fall and winter. Kootenay Lake #CodyCaves is famous for having some of the biggest #woodburyresort Gerrard rainbow trout, reaching phenomBeautiful outdoor enal sizes of over 20 pounds, as well as family-friendly location Dolly Varden (bull in Ainsworth Hot Springs trout) and kokanee. Woodbury Resort sponsors a Dolly Tournament at Easter and a Rainbow Tournament at Thanksgiving, the second Monday in October. Woodbury is also a gateway to Kokanee Glacier Park and the Silverspray cabin. In the summer you can access the park by driving up Woodbury Creek Forestry Road for 13 kilometres to the trailhead. If you are interested in hiking and maybe staying at the Silver Spray cabin, contact the Alpine Club of Canada through their website www.alpineclubofcanada.ca

Spend A Day Fishing... Or 2!

Kootenay Lake has some of the best fishing in Canada. You can fish by boat, kayak or canoe with bucktail streamers on the surface or plugs down deep. Or cast from shore with spoons and jigs. There are three different types of rainbows in Kootenay Lake; Mykiss, Kamlooper and the world renowned Gerrard rainbow with sizes ranging from 1 to 20 lbs! Not to be outdone is the bull trout, or what the locals call dollies. They are great to eat or smoke for later and range from 1 to 15 lbs. For up to date fishing reports, licensing and gear, step into the store in Woodbury or at Barren’s Sport Shop on 4th Street in Kaslo. Want to go fishing with an expert? Contact Hooked-Up Charters at 250-551-3404 www.hookedupfishingtours.com or Reel Adventures at 250-505-4963 www.reeladventuresfishing.com Another option is to go with a buddy and rent a boat from Jones Boys Boats or Woodbury Resort or how about a kayak or two from the Adventure Centre on Front Street in Kaslo? Fishing regulations are online at www.env.gov.bc.ca Kootenay Lake is Region 4 in the province. You won’t be sorry for spending a day on Kootenay Lake! Share your tale! #kootenaylkaefishing
