real winter. real good.

A sled that’s just right ight h ffor you – d just j h quick and responsive and the weight you can handle – is a beautiful thing. Freeriding in the alpine – winding through tight trees, popping out into a mountain meadow, into the sunshine and above the layer of clouds shrouding the valleys… your heart is pounding and there is a big smile stuck on your face. Motocross with skis. The track behind you is the track you made, and is nobody else’s. But…! Getting to those high elevation forests and powder bowls can be jarring on the kidneys. A groomed trail to the alpine is your friend. And you can ride groomed trails with company, kids and novices too. Groomed trails don’t just happen of course. Those pathways to sledding nirvana are almost always groomed by a volunteer from one of the area’s snowmobile clubs. If you’re new to the West Kootenay or new to the sport, join up with a club. You’ll learn where to go – and you will have the best company on the trail – the people who get it! #2 WALKING TOUR OF NELSON’S CRAFT BREW-

ERIES. There are four craft breweries in Nelson. Starting from the top: Nelson Brewing Company is located in Nelson’s original 100 year old brewery building in Uphill Nelson at 512 Latimer Street. Backroads Brewing Company is right on the main drag at 460 Baker Street. Moving down Baker Street, stop in at the Savoy Hotel’s Falls Lounge. Head down towards the waterfront via Vernon and Front streets to Torchlight Brewing at 511 Front Street. Come with a thirst and leave with a growler! #3 GO SLEDDING! Nip into a hardware store and buy a plastic crazy carpet or flying saucer. Although there are a lot of hills in Nelson, not all hills are great for launching your 4 year old (or 40 year old) no matter how tightly they can hang on. Actually it’s all about landing. You don’t want to end up spinning in a roadway or smacked into a tree trunk… or the lake. Your best bet for a good landing is the hill at Queen Elizabeth Park (Cottonwood and Fifth Street.)

#4 RENT A FAT TIRE BIKE at Gerick’s (Baker and Hall streets) and ride up to the Bike Skills Park on West Richards Street in Rosemont. Maybe take the bus – Art Gibbons Memorial Park is on route #3. Every Nelson City bus has space for two bikes.

#5 CHEER ON THE HOME TEAM! Go to a Nelson Leafs Junior Hockey home game at the Community Complex at 305 Hall Street.

When people think of the Cold War, at first they think of the United States and Stalinist Russia and the looming threat of nuclear war. For Canada, America’s big northern neighbour – literally stuck in the middle between these two superpowers of the post war era – there were more than a few reasons to be nervous. If there was to be fallout, it would be nuclear, and it would fall on Canada as well as intended targets.

Touchstones Nelson: If you think the outside looks interesting… Come in from the cold! Join the community and see what’s inside Touchstones Nelson. This great historic building in the heart of downtown gathers together artifacts and displays about the history and prehistory of Nelson and area plus a changeable mix of art, history and shopping – all in one location. In the two permanent galleries visual and interactive stations present the compelling culture and stories from and about the first nations who lived on Kootenay Lake. One area is devoted to the fascinating history of transportation in this rugged area – starting with the unique sturgeon-nosed canoes of the Kutenai through to the sternwheelers and the forging through on land of the railways and the roads. A mini-theatre offers short films on hydro power in the region and a re-telling of the Sinixt creation story of the Columbia River. Two temporary exhibition spaces on the main floor offer regularly changing exhibitions featuring local and regional artists. Don’t miss the gift shop! You will find work by local artists, historical books and unusual items for every budget.

In 1959, Canada’s Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker, very quietly initiated the building of a series of nuclear fallout shelters. The biggest, naturally, was built underground a short distance from Touchstones Nelson. Ottawa, the nation’s capital. But Photo: Peter Williams Nelson got the order too, and soon the region’s go-to place for all its important people (judging by the bathroom facilities, the important people were mainly men) was a shelter built deep in the bowels of what is now Nelson’s main post office, The Gray Building on Vernon Street, next door to Touchstones Museum. Since the time it was built, Nelson’s Diefenbunker has not been changed. It’s a time capsule of the era – the same paint on the walls, the original fixtures and furniture, the tanks that once held a three month supply of water. The museum has added a few touches, put up posters from the era, and laid in some vintage magazines, grocery packages and supplies. It’s all a bit unnerving. If you want to visit the Diefenbunker, you will have to wait until the spring of 2018. Until then, stay tuned. As a radio announcer from back in the fifties would have said, “Don’t touch that dial!”

The ‘Upstream Benefits’ Exhibition is in Gallery A until February 11, 2018. Meet the work of ten artists who all call the Kootenays home. The place in which we live is an important part of the creative process; artists are informed and fostered by place, where they live and where the work was conceived and created. This exhibition is about artist run culture, about the creative process and the importance of place. Touchstones is open from 11am to 4pm Sunday and Tuesday, 10am to 5pm Wednesday to Saturday, closed Mondays and open by donation from 5 to 8pm every Thursday. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, less for younger folks. Touchstones Nelson is located at 502 Vernon Street. Its archives are now online and searchable. Visit the online portal and see most of its collection of artifacts at http://nelson.pastperfectonline. com/ For more information visit their Facebook page or www.touchstonesnelson.ca

Capitol Theatre

Civic Theatre

After dinner at one of Nelson’s many fine and original restaurants, a perfect way to top off your evening is with some engaging entertainment at Nelson’s intimate theatre, the Capitol. Constructed in 1927, this Art Deco gem is run by a society that is thrilled to present world class touring artists and home-grown talent – live theatre, classical ballet and contemporary dance, classical and contemporary music, comedy and a variety of other performances. The Capitol Theatre is located at 421 Victoria Street, 250-352-6363. Check to see what’s playing during your visit to Nelson. www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca

At a time when most of North America was reeling with the dire realities of the financial turmoil that was the Depression, Nelson citizens imagined a complex that would combine an auditorium, ice arena, meeting rooms and offices. It was BC’s major building project of 1935. The auditorium was primarily a movie theatre until it closed in 2011. But this is Nelson, and a society with new energy emerged to bring the movie experience back. Of course technology has changed radically since images were projected through celluloid film. The next step for the Civic will be its future as a workshop for digital film creation. To see what’s on screen today and what the future might hold, visit www.civictheatre.ca

Lakeside Labyrinth. Photo: Donna Nett

Lakeside Labyrinth The Labyrinth in Lakeside Park, Nelson is based on sacred geometry. It is an ancient pattern, with only one path that meanders into the centre and then out again. Unlike a maze, there are no tricks or dead ends.

On the longest night of the year welcome the advent of longer days to come by joining fellow seekers of peace and inner quietude at the Lakeside Labyrinth. Intentional Walks always mark the changing of the season: the winter solstice (December 21), the vernal equinox in late March, the summer solstice in June and the autumnal equinox in September.

Fat Tire SnowBiking

If you want to experience a winter’s day in the woods, under your own power, at your own pace and without lift lines or crowds, head to the hills just above Nelly town. Is your dog with you? Does she need a good run? Take her to Mountain Station and she will love you forever. Leave your vehicle at the parking area at the top of Gore Street, or, if it’s just you and human company, take the Uphill bus. You can rent cross-country skis for the day at Gerick Cycle & Ski on Baker Street if you don’t have your own. Mountain Station was a stop on the Nelson and Fort Sheppard (N&FS) Railway that once connected Spokane and Nelson. The old rails have been removed and now the Great Northern Rail Trail is used by bikers and hikers. In the winter the path is groomed for cross country skiing. There are other trails that branch off from Mountain Station and meander into the forest. Experience the beauty of the deep woods as you enjoy the rhythm of your stride, your breath and the sound of your skis on the crisp snow, like brushes lightly swishing a snare drum.

How many ways can there be to fly through and across mountain snowscapes without using any fuel but your own high energy? It’s been quite a while since snowboards were the brash new powder pushers. But yes, now there is a new kid on the block – or you could say that now your mountain bike has a cool cousin – the fat tire snowbike. Fat tire bikes are mountain bikes with a few modifications – most obvious of these is the slightly under-inflated big bouncy tires. To see one of these new sticky traction puppies is to want one. Once you’re hooked on that bounce, you’ll want to test your snowbike on all kinds of terrain that would bog down your summer bike. In Italy there is a festival where people ride their fat tires from the snows of the Alps down to the soft sand of the Mediterranean seashore. Sounds like somewhere near Nellie, doesn’t it? When you think about it, fat tire bikes are the perfect solution for at least three of our Kootenay seasons – which are divided just as much by elevation as the calendar. A path that is mucky at the trailhead progresses more and more icily as you ascend till you find yourself traversing windblown powder at the top of a bowl. But no worries – you’re a on a three-season bike and it just got you there and it will swoop you down. Rent one before you buy. In Nelson, Gerick Cycle & Ski (downtown, 702 Baker Street) rents snow bikes and you can also rent them at Whitewater Ski Resort. The staff will be happy to share with you their preferred trails for bouncing in the backcountry.

Take It Up A Notch Maybe you’re a rank beginner, or maybe you are someone who has been addicted to the rhythm of crosscountry skiing for decades. Either way, head to Apex and Busk. The Nelson Nordic Ski Area has over 28 kms of groomed trails unrivalled for their beauty and variety, and it is just ten minutes south of Nelson. Head towards Ymir and Salmo; the trail-

head is right across the highway from the Whitewater Ski Hill Road. For this excursion into the white, you will need to leave the dog at home. On these well marked trails, rated beginner to expert, you’ll be spooling through marsh, meadow and old growth forest. There are warming huts to give a little rest to the rhythm – a chance to pause, breathe deeply, rehydrate and chow down some trail mix. A 1.3 kilometre loop is lit at

night until 10pm and that makes for a gorgeous skiing experience. The Club Area operates in co-operation with private landowners and the BC Forest Service. Daily or nightly fees are payable at the trailheads or season passes may be purchased from the club. If you have membership with Blackjack or Castlegar Nordic Ski, you only pay half price day use fees on the club’s trails. Visit www.nelsonnordicski.ca and their Facebook page for updates on trail conditions and club events.

To make the most of your experience, take a course at the Adventure Centre. These courses get skiers and snowboarders alike past the falling or falling in love stage, and will turn you into a Whitewater lifer. From basic learn-to-ski to advanced clinics and two levels of avalanche awareness, the centre is a one-stop shop. Whether you are downhill skiing, snowboarding, telemarking, cross -country skiing, or heading off into the backcountry, the committed, professionally trained snow school and snow safety instructors are passionate about ensuring you have the tools and information you need and will likely use.

Once you’ve spent a day here, keeping this cat in the bag is hard to do. And that’s got some of the regulars a little worried. Whitewater still has that out-of-the-way vibe of a community ski hill far from the madding crowds. Cradled in British Columbia’s legendary Selkirk Mountains, at the day lodge beneath Ymir Mountain the elevation is 5400 ft (1640m), Whitewater’s dependably dry snowfall totals over 10 metres a season. That is more than 40 feet.

Salmo is also known as the home of the now infamous Salmo Dinner Jacket, a red and black plaid lumberjacket defined in the Urban Dictionary as the “archetypal Real Man’s Jacket and a classic piece of working man’s attire.” This jacket, together with a full array of official Salmo gear, is available online at www.salmo.ca/promotions or in person at the Village office located at 423 Davies Street in Salmo.

Salmo Hotel. Photo: Linda Buffy

salmo Salmo, Erie and Ymir were small mining towns that grew up along the right-of-way of the historic Nelson/ Fort Sheppard Railway during the gold rush years of 1896 and 1897. Gold, silver, lead, zinc and tungsten were mined in the surrounding mountains and Salmo was born as a centre for supplies and entertainment. The Salmo Valley was also famous for the large cedars that grew there. The early logging industry and forest fires have destroyed much of that original forest, but isolated stands can still be found. The remains of Salmo’s logging heritage can be seen today in Springboard Park, a majestic natural forest with a well maintained trail about a kilometre long. Today, Salmo calls itself the “Hub of the Kootenays” because it lies at the junction of two main highways. It is a quiet, friendly village of about 1,140 people. It’s noted for its stone murals and its wooden architecture, with many heritage buildings dating from the 1920s and 1930s. The oldest building in town – which somehow managed to escape the fires that were so common in the West Kootenay’s first settlements, is the Salmo Hotel, built in 1912. The logging roads that have been carved into the mountains provide access into the backcountry for snowmobiling and cross country skiing. The local ski hill has great downhill skiing and snowboarding. Other activities to pursue in Salmo during the winter include backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and winter fishing. Learn lots more about the area by visiting www.salmo. ca/discover-salmo/recreation-attractions.

THE TRUE CANADIAN ADVENTURE BC Canada

It takes about an hour on skins to reach the Ripple Ridge and the new Lightning Strike cabin from the Stagleap parking area. Stagleap Provincial Park is a wilderness area about halfway between Salmo and Creston in the Salmo-Creston (Kootenay) Pass. The tracks left by previous skiers are usually easy enough to follow and for this first segment, there is no appreciable avalanche danger. The trail from the highway goes up and up (you will gain about 1500 feet in elevation), then levels off before it drops into the next valley. Look for the trail on the right leading to the cabins. You can actually reserve to stay overnight through www.rippleridge.ca If you are an experienced backcountry skier, head out to where the real rewards are, further out to Baldy Rocks, The Muffin or Cornice Ridge. You are in for a ski day you will remember for the rest of your life.

When was the last time you went bowling? bvbowlingclub.ca

For over a hundred years, this small town on Beaver Creek has been important as a provisioning and social centre to miners, loggers and sawmill workers, and a home to the workers at the smelting plant in Trail. It is now home to about 2,000 people.

For a rural community there is a surprising variety of sports and activities to choose from, even in the wintertime. Almost all are organized, developed and enjoyed by volunteer clubs, but newcomers and visitors are usually welcome to join in. The bowling club keeps its five lanes humming all year; and during the winter a cross country skiing club and a snowmobiling club maintain trails throughout the area. Fruitvale also has some great little stores and places to get a bite. Grab your skis, your kids and your friends and head out for a bracing day of skiing in the Beaver Valley. A lovely spot to ski is where a lot of local people take their

The terrain is gentle and there is a warming shelter when you need to take a breather. To get there take the Champion Lakes Road, approximately 10 kms east of Fruitvale on Hwy 3B – watch for the blue sign.

Nitehawks Home Games Fans say the best hockey in the Kootenays takes place at the Beaver Valley Arena. The Beaver Valley Nitehawks offer experienced hockey, and the prospect of watching them hoist another trophy at the end of the season keeps their loyal fans in the stands year after year. If you’re in the area when they are playing, why don’t you take in a game – you’ll be highly entertained! Beaver Valley Arena located at 1777 Green Rd, Fruitvale.

But Trail is not all about tech. Its large Italian community is another side to the city’s distinctive character. Some say the best Italian food in the province is to be enjoyed here. You’ll be inspired by the great selection of Italian specialties at Ferraro’s grocery downtown. Or, the Colander Restaurant serves Italian right – family style with massive entrees and a big bowl of salad placed on the table for everybody to share. Another great choice if you’re hungry after a day on the slopes is the casual fine dining to be had at Benedict’s Steakhouse, or raise a glass with friends while you warm by the fireplace at the Tunnel Pub or at Foxy’s in the Best Western – there are many great choices in Trail.

Stay In Trail, Ride To Red Make Trail your home base while you explore all the winter recreation options nearby, like Red Mountain. The award winning Best Western Plus Columbia River Hotel with its well-appointed rooms is right downtown. Another popular place to stay is the Glenwood Motel. It has consistently high ratings for cleanliness and friendliness. It has a hot tub and a fitness room, and the motel is dog friendly. rossland Powder Mecca Steeped with a history rich in gold and silver mining, the picturesque alpine city of Rossland is perched high in the Monashee Mountain range. When gold was discovered on Red Mountain in 1890 by two transient prospectors, Rossland quickly became known as the Golden City. Skiing has played a large part in the town’s history. Olaus Jeldness came to Rossland in 1896. He represented the very peak of skiing ability in Canada, and even perhaps the continent, at the time. Local legend has it that Olaus jumped clear over a train standing at the Red Mountain station, a prodigious and spectacular feat in any day. A day at Red Mountain Resort is a must do for any skier on the powder highway. Red Mountain ski area encompasses three big mountains, Red, Granite and Grey. With 2877 total lift serviced acres of terrain (2,919 vertical feet), 110 marked runs plus 4,200 acres of easy to access backcountry, Red boasts a powerful potential for unforgettable skiing and boarding. If you are a new guest to Red Mountain, take advantage of the fantastic Snowhost program with free tours of the mountain.

Winter Carnival 2018 marks the 120th Annual Rossland Winter Carnival. Olaus Jeldness pioneered the event in 1898 – the first ever winter carnival in Western Canada. Rossland and Red Mountain are bopping both day and night on carnival weekend, every year at the end of January. It begins with a variety show on Thursday evening and hardly stops until Sunday night. On Saturday and Sunday, the internationally award winning artists of the Slocan Snow Sculptures will be creating new works throughout town. Friday sees a lot of action: races and a parade downtown, bonfires, fire spinners, live music… Watch the street fill up with dancers stomping, the best way to keep warm! During the day, there are creative races with bobsleds, snowmobiles, GTs, skis, snowshoes, mountain bikes with the big fat tires, golf clubs, and running shoes. Keeping the beat, the Boomtown Garter Girls will be performing around town. Plan to be in Rossland January 25 – 28, 2018 and immerse yourself in the finest kind of winter mountain culture. It’s a blast! Can’t make it to the carnival? That’s alright – for such a small town, it is truly amazing that you can find something original to watch or try out in any month of the winter. Here are just a few: At Red Mountain: Jan 17 – 24 Canadian Open Freeride Championships (Junior skiers and Collegiate skiers and snowboarders) Jan 27, 28 Fat Bike Fest & FATDURO Race March 16, 17 RED Mountain Resort’s Beer Goggles 2017 Craft Brew Fest is back for its 5th hop-inducing, sud-soaking year in a row.

What To Do Today? When you want to mix it up a bit, a little indoorsy and a little outdoorsy, here are five suggestions: 1. BOOK A TOUR OF THE NAKUSP & DISTRICT MUSEUM: Of special interest is the brand new 3650 sq ft addition to the museum that is dedicated to telling the Sinixt story, from the last ice age to the present day. There is a lot to see and take in, including a diorama and a tule tipi made of woven bulrush reeds. Call 250-265-2120.

2. GO CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING on the new trails and expanded play area at the Valhalla Nordic Ski area. hillsnordic.wordpress.com

3. SKATE OR PLAY HOCKEY: Toonie skate or drop in hockey. Times? www.nakusparrowlakes.com/events-calendar/ 4. TOUR A LOCAL CIDERY: Burton City Cider is 30 minutes south of Nakusp. www.burtoncitycider.ca Call ahead to book a tour: 250-265-7044. 5. GO TO THE MARKET! There are two year-round markets: Fringe Fridays, 1 to 6pm and the Farmers Market on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, both at the old firehall on 5th Street, just up from Broadway.

Nakusp Hot Springs The Nakusp Hot Springs is located deep in the forest in the Selkirk Mountains 12 kms above Nakusp along the roaring Kuskanax River. Cozy, updated cedar chalets provide charming accommodation, and there are many trails that radiate from or lead to the hot springs that are perfect for snowshoeing. The Kuskanax trail is one of these – it takes about four hours to hike from just south of Nakusp at Carson’s Corner to the hot springs. The trail follows the river all the way, and you’ll be “shoeing” in the footsteps of Nakusp’s early mineral prospectors and pioneers since the route is the packhorse route dating to 1912. See www.nakusphotsprings.com for details. After your nice outdoorsy day, luxuriate in the two naturally heated mineral pools at Nakusp Hot Springs: one is hot at 41°C (106°F) for your soaking enjoyment, the other, at 38°C (100°F) is lovely for swimming.

Summit Lake Ski Hill You sure can have a lot of fun in a day here. Summit Lake is a volunteer-run hill and the community spirit that keeps the hill going guarantees fun that is worlds away from the trendy resorts. There are 8 ski or snowboarding runs from beginner to expert (T Bar lift), a bunny hill (rope tow) and a tube park! If half your party prefers a more horizontal snow trek, there are cross-country trails and snowshoeing trails in the Summit Ski area as well as the downhill runs. Hours are Wed – Sun 10am to 3:30pm, and Friday nights 6 to 9pm. (It’s kinda old-school, so bear in mind it’s cash only.) www.skisummitlake.com

Fishing is great on Arrow Lake and many a good trout or dolly has been caught from the dock at Halcyon. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at the resort or in the surrounding areas is invigorating. After all that activity, come relax in the healing waters of Halcyon Hot Springs.

Situated on the shores of Slocan Lake, beneath the snowfields of the Valhalla Glacier, the Village of New Denver (population 473) has a surprising number of restaurants, shops and galleries to explore along its heritage main street. Make a point of visiting the beaches or the gallery in the tiny Village of Silverton, also on the lake shore and a few minutes away to the south.

SLOCAN LAKE’S GROCERY STORE

Kaslo, the pearl of Kootenay Lake, is a picturesque village that has been called “a vintage silver dollar in the West Kootenay’s pocket” by Beautiful British Columbia magazine. Tucked away within the surrounding mountains, and skirted by a rushing river and spectacular lake, its location is breathtaking. In winter, Kaslo is your gateway to heliskiing, cross-country skiing, skating, snowmobiling and fishing. Kaslo, originally called Kane’s Landing, was founded in 1893. It is celebrating its 125th birthday in 2018. If you are in Kaslo during BC Heritage Week (February 19 – 25), you’ll be able to tag along on a guided tour or two of its beautiful heritage buildings. The Village of Kaslo has undergone dramatic changes since the boom days of the 1890s. Where there were once 27 saloons full of boisterous prospectors, there is now a myriad of activities for everybody to enjoy.

Come for the amazing outdoor recreation – the trail network is spectacular and varied – but save some time for the eclectic and original shopping opportunities that abound on or near Front Street in Kaslo’s downtown. Treat yourself to a live show and an overnighter in the heritage hotel or one of the many other cozy accommodations nearby. Wind down in the evening with a locally brewed Angry Hen, and you’ll know you are living the dream.

Hours: 8am - 6pm, 7 days a week www.newmarketfoods.ca

Rich in history, strong in community spirit, spectacular in location, Kaslo offers those who live there a quality of life others can only envy. If you can’t come and stay, you can come and play!

Winter Solstice Celebrate the Winter Solstice on December 21 from 4 pm till 6 pm at the Unity Bridge in lower Kaslo. There’s plenty of parking at the Public Works Yard. Visit with your friends and neighbours and enjoy the pedestrian bridge light up. There will be free hot chocolate and apple cider and fire barrels to keep you warm. If it rains or snows there will be cover for everyone on the bridge or under tarps. EVERYONE WELCOME!

Baby, It’s Cold Out Here! A new year’s day tradition in Kaslo, the Polar Bear Dip gets hardy (and foolhardy) souls out for a brisk swim in the lake. This annual event is a fundraiser for the Langham Cultural Centre. Take the plunge at 12 noon sharp (hopping around on the beach waiting for latecomers is not an option), or drink some hot chocolate with the local spectators and enjoy the great outdoors on January 1.

Catch A Live One Just about every week of the year there is an original musical performance at the BlueBelle Bistro. Check the Pennywise paper or visit www.BlueBelleBistro.com for who’s playing when you’re in town and want a night out. The Kaslo Hotel also hosts bands or evenings featuring DJs or (surprisingly good!) Open Mic nights. Buddy’s Pizzeria presents mostly local talent and occasional out of town finds. The Kaslo Concert Society has for many years hosted some amazing classical musicians at the Heritage Hall in the United Church. If you’re in Kaslo on March 9, you’ll have an opportunity to hear one of the most promising young virtuoso pianists representing the Golden Age of the Russion Piano School, Alexei Tartakovsky. The Langham Cultural Centre hosts a series of live performances throughout the year; this year there will be folk, roots and bluegrass shows on the schedule. They also show the FLIKS Movie Series with screenings on January 12, February 9 and March 16. The Langham Gallery displays a series of exhibitions as well, openings are January 5, March 2 and May 18, 2018. Check their website www.thelangham.ca, to find out what’s going on while you’re here.

2017/18

Got the winter blues? This rather unusual festival offers a quick dose of fun at a dark time of year. The Kaslo & District Community Forest Society sponsors this quirky family festival at the east end of the Kaslo airport on BC Family Day, the second Monday in February. Popular contests that are regulars at this festival include the human dogsled races for charity and the woodsman skills competitions such as the water boil, swede sawing contest and dot split. Enjoy homemade soups, hotdogs, bannock over the fire, maple taffy on the snow, skiing and snowshoeing (skis provided), storytelling, live music and more! For more information check it out on Facebook: KasloWinterForestFestival.

National Historic Sites Kaslo has two National Historic Sites – its original City Hall, built in 1895, and the SS Moyie Sternwheeler, now dry docked on Front Street. For the past several years, the City Hall has been undergoing extensive renovations. With the building under restoration, the affairs of the village have been run from a block away in the historic Kemball Memorial Centre, a foursquare brick edifice built in 1912. In 2018, which will be the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of Kaslo, Mayor and Council are expected to move back into the original seat of Kaslo’s municipal government. The building will contain offices and council chambers, but the one room that has been closed for years and whose unveiling is highly anticipated, is the lovely old courtroom on the top floor. With its high vaulted ceilings and large arched windows, it’s a beautiful gracious room with superb acoustics.

SS Moyie

For nearly 60 years, sternwheelers provided a transportation lifeline to the many isolated communities on Kootenay Lake. The SS Moyie (the world’s oldest intact passenger sternwheeler) and her sister ships literally opened the Kootenay region to miners, businesses, farmers and pioneer families. When she was launched on October 22, 1898, there were no roads, no trains, and of course no air travel into these hidden mountain valleys. The ships were the only means of mass transportation, freight and mail service. And so they came – the rich, the poor, prospectors and settlers – sailing up the pristine waterways on ships that were themselves works of art. The sternwheelers were the bearers of our destiny.

You’ll find cross-country skiing and snowshoeing smack dab in Kaslo’s back yard. The True Blue recreation area has many kilometres of marked trails – woodland paths and gentle grades as well as some good climbs and swift flying slopes if you are on skis. These are multi-purpose trails, so you may encounter snowmobiles (though rarely) but there are just as many trails that are perfect for snowshoeing as there are trails imprinted with skiers’ tracks. Also, no one minds if your dog runs alongside you. To get to this network of trails, head towards Kaslo’s air strip. A map of the True Blue trails is on the Kaslo Chamber website, www.kaslochamber.com or buy the little yellow trail map booklet at merchants downtown for only $2.

Now a designated National Historic Site and BC Landmark, the sternwheeler is closed for the winter, re-opening on Mothers Day. She is located at 324 Front Street, Kaslo. For more information see www.klhs.bc.ca or phone/fax 250-353-2525.

Kaslo also has a Nordic recreation area on the flanks of Mt Buchanan, known locally as “Bucky.” To access these groomed trails, drive 6.5 kms west of Kaslo on the highway to New Denver and park in the pullout. From the parking lot the trail goes south and has a 5.5% grade for 1.1 kms to the equipment shed. Bucky Cabin is about a 7.5 km ski further along; a good chunk of that trail has a 10% slope, so you’ll be really glad to see the cosily appointed cabin with wood stove, mats and benches – plus a terrific view across the valley. Trail grooming extends another 2 kms past the cabin. If you’re skiing with your dog, you are asked to take the track to the north of the equipment shed.

Kaslo Area Community Complex The Kaslo Complex is home to the hockey and curling rinks. The Arena offers public skating, Fridays 7 - 9 pm and Sundays 2 - 4 pm; Drop-in co-ed/beginner hockey is Mondays, 6:30 - 8 pm; Thursdays, 7:30 - 8:30 there is an all levels hockey development called Skills & Drills. A reasonable fees is charged for each of these ice times. For rates and private rental information visit kasloarena.ca or email HockeyInKaslo75@yahoo.ca or call 250-353-2855.

For more information go to the website of the Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society, www.korsbc.blogspot.ca for maps, and dates for coming events such as moonlight skis, chili nights, Valentine’s Day chocolate fondue, Jackrabbits ski program and the annual 30 km skiathon.

Come to immerse yourself in the naturally warm, healing waters and to allow the power of nature to soothe your body and soul. Since time immemorial, the Ktunaxa people (pronounced tuhnah-ha) have valued the springs as a place for healing. After battle, warriors would come to soak in the spirit waters (nupika wu’u), easing their heart and limbs back from injury and strain through to strength once again. The source of the springs lies above, in the Cody Caves area. The water works its way down through porous calcareous rock to flow through to the pools below, renewing the water naturally approximately six times a day.

Balfour Balfour lies on the western shore of Kootenay Lake, just as the lake’s west arm splits off from the main body of the lake to flow through the narrows. (The water once again becomes the Kootenay River, southwest of Balfour, past Nelson near Taghum.) Stroll down to the sandy beach by the ferry landing for wonderful views of the Purcell Mountains. The hemlock/fir/cedar forests on the lower slopes reflect greenly in the water, even in the winter, since the swiftly flowing channel never freezes. If you’re coming to Balfour via the longest free ferry ride in the world, aboard the Osprey 2000, the Selkirks are the mountain range that dominates the western view. There are plenty of ways to enjoy a bracing winter’s day in and near Balfour, but the best part of your day might be the warm-up, after it gets dark outside and you are indoors, telling stories by the fireside at the pub.

Cruise Kootenay Lake From west to east and east to west, 10 times each day, the MV Osprey will ferry you and your vehicle safely across Kootenay Lake. It is the longest free ferry ride in the world and takes approximately 35 minutes. Think of it as a winter cruise in the Kootenays! On the other side of the lake from Balfour, Pilot Bay Provincial Park is a 10 minute drive. Hike up to the old lighthouse. From there you can see south, north and west – really the best view of Kootenay Lake. Enjoy a burger or a bowl of soup on the ferry when you make your way back to Balfour. Or… Spend a leisurely morning, enjoy breakfast at Holly’s, feed the ducks… Then go for a swift crosscountry ski on the Balfour Golf Course until your cheeks are red and your hair is a tangled mess. Afterwards, pamper your face and body at the spa at Kootenay Lakeview. Resort. A Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage sounds like the perfect end to a winter’s day

New Year’s Day Derby How do you celebrate the dawn of a new year? If you live in Balfour, you live in a community where getting out fishing on the lake seems like the natural way to greet the new year. Casting your line and enjoying the company of family, friends and your neighbours, maybe musing about the future and the past – this little local derby has all the anticipation and nostalgia that seem to suit this holiday. The New Year’s Day derby in Balfour is just for fun. Whether you’re a local or are visiting the area, you are welcome to join in! Winter Fishing is the Best!

reward of a typical February day fishing. Trolling with flashers and Gibbs Delta G-Force spoons seem to be what’s effective.

Fishing is at its best on Kootenay Lake in fall and winter. What’s the catch? Some of the biggest rainbow trout, the Gerrard rainbows, which reach phenomenal sizes of over 20 lbs, as well as Dolly Varden (bull trout) and kokanee, a landlocked salmon. The main body of Kootenay Lake was slower fishing than normal. Although, the cooler water temperatures usually slow things down for February and March. We did about a dozen trips throughout the month and had some mixed results.

“Lots of nice kokanee being caught on the weekends down in the lower west arm, and some pretty nice bull trout being caught throughout the arm. Our biggest bull lately was a fat 14 pounder. But most fish averaged between 5 – 10 lbs. Looking forward to the weather finally starting to warm up and hopefully the fish will follow suit.” Kerry Reed, March 2017 Check out Kerry’s blog for Kootenay Lake specific information and videos too.

Last winter was unusually cold for long spells, but even still, most days yielded a couple of fish for the brave souls who will fish at any time. At that time of year, slow trolling is key. Rainbows from 2 – 4 lbs and Bull Trout from 3 – 14 lbs are the
