Boasting ng the longest free ferry ride in the world, w the Kootenay Lake ferry runs year round. The ferries, Osprey 2000 and MV Balfour, operate between Balfour on the west side, and Kootenay Bay on the east side, forming a link with the Trans-Provincial Highway 3A. The crossing takes approximately 35 minutes cruising at 15 knots and passengers enjoy a marvellous view of the area from the decks of both vessels. During the winter months, the Osprey is the only ferry providing service. The capacity of the Osprey is 80 vehicles – 250 passengers. There is indoor seating on the top deck. There is a coffee bar on the main deck where you can treat yourself to breakfast or a light lunch during your crossing. All times stated on the Kootenay Lake ferry schedule are in Pacific Time (local time, Balfour). Kootenay Lake is the boundary between the Mountain and Pacific time zones in winter. Crossing from one time zone to another means having to change your watch. If you are approaching the ferry from the Creston side - change your watch now - and you’ll have the same time as the ferry schedule.

The West Kootenay has the most fantastic snow in the world for riding ... and skiers, boarders and tourers of all descriptions know that. There is so much snow at the higher elevations that it can be overwhelming. Snowshoers and crosscountry skiers prefer the valley trails … the sledders and alpine skiers and boarders own the high country.
There are many powder adventures that ‘branch off ’ from downhill and nordic skiing. Downhill ski areas like Summit Lake and Ski Salmo provide accessible, inexpensive, and patrolled venues to practice your basic telemark or downhill turn skills. The risks are low, the parking lots are easily accessible. Alpine or telemark touring provides a lighter, quieter, and more independent way to access the backcountry. Lodges offer various options to get info about the backcountry, with different levels of support for wayfinding and snow safety. Kaslo Manor Lodge for example offers base-camp type assistance with transportation, wayfinding, and local knowledge about the snowpack. Ice Creek Lodge offers remote lodging and guide services from a registered mountain guide.

Play Safe Those of us who live for winter share a few basic skills to keep ourselves warm and safe. As we take on more adventures, we learn more skills. Basic winter safety is first about learning to dress for changes in temperature. Second, understand that minor accidents can have big consequences if you are by yourself. Ski hills offer patrols on the runs – but when venturing in the backcountry, take a buddy. Third – know the terrain. Ask a local, get a map, tell someone where you are going. And finally, every powder adventure from snowshoeing to touring to helicopteraided riding involves some snow risk – learn snow safety. Everything is flow. The sun shines, the snow rolls up and billows, a mouthful at every turn. A dancer and her mountain, running down the hill, effortless, breathless. Pure joy. I seat my skis into the snowpack, check my balance. My goggles are fogged from the climb, and I’m hot. I’m too excited to do anything about it, just unzip all those zippers. Trail
where legends are born
The City of Trail, set along the banks of the Columbia River, is where almost 8,000 people call home. The town takes its name from the Dewdney Trail, and was earlier known as Trail Creek. The single most important event in its history was the discovery of gold and copper ore on the face of Red Mountain in 1890. Located in the land of legend and pioneers, Trail is one of BC’s important economic centres and is the industrial heart of the Kootenays. When the Dewdney Trail was started in 1860 to serve as a trade route from the coast to the BC interior, the area that became known as the Silver City was completely undeveloped. Trail’s transition from frontier to settlement began in 1895 when there was interest in locating a smelter in the area to serve the rich mines in Rossland. A small copper smelter on a bench above the townsite was completed in 1896, and named the British Columbia Smelting and Refining Company. This smelter evolved into what is now known as Teck, a successful and innovative worldwide mining company. Over the years, Trail has become the home of a large Italian community that has contributed to the city’s distinctive character, giving it a definite Old World feel. Trail is very proud of its Italian heritage. The terraced homes and intensive gardens tucked into the winding streets of “Little Italy” are a delight to see. Some say the best Italian food in the province is to be enjoyed here. Whether your passion is outdoor recreation, history, sports or the arts, you will discover plenty to occupy yourself in and around Trail. The small town friendliness and quick access to first-class recreational facilities in any season make it easy and affordable to “explore your Trail.”

Smoke Eaters Hockey in Trail means the “Smokies”. The Trail Smoke Eaters are part of the BC Junior Hockey League, and the team has a long and rich history which has contributed significantly to the remarkable sporting reputation of the city. The Smoke Eaters still hold the distinction of being the last Canadian amateur hockey team to win a World Championship (1961). They say “When you’ve played for the Smoke Eaters, you become a Smoke Eater for life,” and that is true of their fans too! Be sure to catch a game. Try A Teck Tour
“Home of Champions”
For over 100 years there has been a smelting industry in Trail, and today Teck’s Trail Operations is one of the largest zinc and lead smelting complexes in the world. Using state of the art technology and employing 1,500 people, Teck’s smelting and refining complex at Trail produces a wide range of metals and related products. The smelter was originally built to process concentrates from local mines; concentrates are now purchased from mines throughout the world.
The greater Trail area is well known as the “Home of Champions”. A monument was needed to celebrate this designation! The Home of Champions monument is located in the 900 block of Farwell Street next to the Kootenay Savings Credit Union. The monument recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to the communities of Greater Trail in the categories of Sports, Industry and Lifestyle, or who have reached a significant level of achievement in their chosen field of endeavour.
The Teck Interpretive Centre is a mini science centre located in downtown Trail and featuring interactive, hands-on exhibits telling the story of what Teck’s Trail Operations do and how this major industry monitors and protects the environment.
The monument was sponsored by Kootenay Savings Credit Union and was constructed in 1996. A society has been established to select individuals to be honoured as a champion of their home city, and to organize induction ceremonies as required.
The centre is located above the TD Bank in downtown Trail, #200-1199 Bay Avenue, and is open 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday all year round. Free guided tours of the giant Zinc Electrolytic and Melting Plant are given Monday through Friday and begin at the Teck Interpretive Centre. Minimum age is 12 years. Flat walking shoes, slacks, and long sleeved shirts or jackets are required. Call the Trail Chamber of Commerce at 250-368-3144 to book a tour. In winter, book 24 hours in advance. Take advantage of this great opportunity to experience the innovative processes at Teck’s Trail Operations.

This is Trail’s only gallery and primary creative activity centre. Their mandate is to “present the work of emerging and established Kootenay artists and to provide training opportunities at all levels.” The downtown gallery recently received a much needed makeover courtesy of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. With a full schedule of exhibitions planned, the gallery is fresh-faced and ready for a bright future.

Sweeeep In 1908, with 52 members, the Trail Curling Club delivered its first rock to the button. As with other regional clubs, in the early days the matches were played on natural ice – which was often slushy. Despite less than ideal conditions in the days before artificial ice chilling, in only five years the sport of curling was so entrenched in Trail that the club hosted the 1913 British Columbia Curling Bonspiel.

Membership in the Trail Curling Club climbed as the population of Trail grew. By 1929 the club had 216 members, and 13 women’s rinks. Next to hockey, curling was the most popular winter sport in town. Between 1947 and 1957, Trail rinks won the BC Curling Championship nine times. Yet another reason for Trail’s claim to fame as BC’s Best Sports Town!

Rossland Winter Carnival 2015 marks the 117 year for the Rossland Winter Carnival. As ever, it is sure to promise spectacular family fun! Olaus Jeldness pioneered the event and kept it successful for many years. He is still honoured each year at the carnival. th
The carnival kicks off on the last Thursday evening in January with a variety show and the auctioning off of the bobsled teams. After the race is run down one of Rosslands’ steepest streets at speeds reaching a stomach-churning 85 kmh, if you are the owner of the winning team, you will win cash! On Friday you will see

Steeped S d in a history h rich h in gold ld and d silver l mining lore, this picturesque alpine city is perched high in the Monashee Mountain range. When gold was discovered on Red Mountain by two transient prospectors in 1890, Rossland was quickly dubbed the Golden City. The find that precipitated the ensuing gold rush was uncovered on the Le Roi claim. In 1898 the Le Roi mine was sold for just over $3,000,000 to the British American Corporation. Between the years 1901 and 1916, 50% of the entire gold production of British Columbia came from the mines on Red Mountain. Rossland had become one of the largest and richest gold mine cities in history, at its peak boasting a population of over 7,000, with 42 saloons, a total of 17 law firms and several newspapers.

Slocan Valley
This wilderness park encompasses 49,600 hectares, from the sandy beaches of Slocan Lake, up past tumbling waterfalls, to alpine lakes and meadows, crowned by the New Denver Glacier. Observant boaters will spot pictographs painted long ago by members of the Arrow Lakes Band. A great place to stay while exploring the park is Valhalla RiverSuites. The Slocan Valley is dotted with small farms, The farms mountainside hideaways, and quiet lakeside villages. Slocan Lake averages 500 feet in depth; steep cliffs guard the shoreline at many places. The lake is fed by mountain streams, and is the source of the clean, clear Slocan River, which has been used as a transportation route by miners and loggers for well over a hundred years. Yet the river valley still has the feel of a wild, unspoiled ecosystem. A multipurpose path which is unusually wind sheltered, has been developed from an old railway bed that skirts the shores of the Slocan River. Scenic in all seasons, the well loved trail is used year round. Like most places in the Kootenays, the Slocan Valley is known for deep powder snow. In winter the trails are busy with cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and hearty hikers. These trails are for non-motorized use only; explore them and enjoy the peace and beauty of a world in white. Other popular areas in the valley for winter recreation include the Winlaw Nature Park and the Walter Clough Wildlife Area. The Slocan Valley is a wonderland for those who love the outdoors. Valhalla Provincial Park stretches along two-thirds of the western shoreline of Slocan Lake. If you are coming from the south, there is an entrance to Valhalla Provincial Park at Passmore.

The Nelson Curling Club has been in existence for a very, very long time. It was founded in 1898 and in the early years, operated in three different locations. In 1935, with the advent of artificial ice, the club moved into Nelson’s Civic Centre. From there, a six sheet curling facility was built in 1972 and that’s where the curling takes place to this day.
The Nelson & District Community Complex is your action-packed centre for inside fun! There are three swimming pools including a tot pool with water features, a water slide, hot tub, sauna, steam room and a full range of water aerobics classes. Hot areas as well as at least half the Leisure or Shallow pool are available to the public during all hours of operation. Lap swimming is also open to the public during all hours of operation except during special events. Unfortunately, the aquatic area will be closed April 1, 2015 for about eight months. The good news is that when it reopens, it will be a new, improved facility.
With six sheets of quality ice, a lounge/meeting area, bar and kitchen facilities, the Nelson Curling Centre also makes an ideal location for private functions such as conferences, corporate wellness days and team building events, private parties including birthdays, and staff Christmas parties. Boarding Big Time Did you know that snowboarding began with the invention of a toy in 1965? The first board was dubbed a “snurfer”, combining snow and surfer. The toy proved so popular that over a million snurfers were sold in the next decade. This heralded the emergence of snowboarding as we know it now.

The Capitol Theatre During the grand era of Hollywood glitz and glamour, a prominent Nelson contractor, Mr. A.H. Green, purchased the Central Garage on Victoria Street and had it transformed into a theatrical palace of style and refinement. The Capitol Theatre officially opened on September 5, 1927.

Kootenay Lake is home to the world famous Gerrard rainbow trout that can weigh in as heavy as 35 lbs. There are also great numbers of Dolly Varden (bull trout). They have been caught up to 29 lbs. Fishermen from all over the world come to Kootenay Lake for their chance at catching ‘the fish of a lifetime’.
Winter Fishing As Kootenay Lake cools down in the fall, the fish begin to feed heavily. This is the time of year when you can catch some of the biggest fish. Imagine trolling your lure right on the surface and having a giant Gerrard rainbow take the lure and start running with it. The acrobatic maneuvers of these great fish, as they leap out of the water over and over will give you a thrill that can’t be described until it happens to you, too.

In 1864, mountain men and prospectors following the Dewdney Trail discovered the beautiful Creston Valley. Travel in and out of the valley was difficult back then, and the waterways were the primary access. Gold provided the incentive for an east-west overland route to link the coastal communities with the gold fields centred on Fort Steele. When the mining fever shifted north to the Kaslo-Slocan region, the valley and its waterways became a northsouth throughway. The building of the railroads in the late 1890s played a large part in the economy, as all goods were transported by rail and ship. Wintertime is beautiful in Creston. The moderate temperatures very seldom dip below -10ºC, so “It’s too cold outside” is rarely heard. There are a host of winter activities to engage both locals and visitors. Cross country skiers and snowshoers have an endless supply of trails. Creston is close to world class downhill ski resorts, no matter which direction you travel. There are many backcountry spots for snow activities but keep in mind that these are in avalanche country and be sure to check with the Forestry Service or the avalanche awareness websites before heading out. Curling, hockey, snowmobiling, even hay rides are part of winter in Creston.
Winter Wildlife A wonderland of winter activities starts to unfold before your eyes at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. The public boardwalk takes you out to a three storey viewing tower where you can get a bird’s eye view. Duck Lake is a must see for wildlife watching, fishing, and walking or skiing along the flat top dykes. Enjoy the day watching the winter birds as you explore the trails. The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area also provides the opportunity to see large mammals such as elk, moose, deer, coyotes, muskrat, beaver and river otters in addition to the diverse bird species for which the Area is best known. The CVWMA is a 17,000 acre wetland habitat that stretches from the south end of Kootenay Lake to the US border. It is a designated wetland of international significance (Ramsar site) and recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and nationally as an Important Reptile and Amphibian Area (IMPARA). Over 286 species of birds, 57 species of mammals and 29 species of fish, reptiles and amphibians call the wetland of the CVWMA home.
Snowmobile Playground Creston is home to an enthusiastic snowmobiling community. The Kokanee Country Snowmobile Club works hard to grow its membership and its trail systems. With a fun, family vibe, this club is dedicated to keeping the sport alive in the area. Char Creek Cabin Trail: Although not groomed, the Char Creek Cabin Trail is a favourite outing for sledders. The deactivated logging road turned snowmobile trail is located about 50 km up the Salmo Creston Pass on the left hand side. With lots of staging room, it’s easy to access the trailhead. The trail to the cabin is about five km in length and is maintained by the Kokanee Country Snowmobile Club. Russell Creek: Directly above the historic mining town of Kitchener, about 15 minutes from Creston, is the Russell Creek logging road. Contact the snowmobile club to ensure there is no active logging in the area before staging. The trails go on forever, so be sure to pay close attention to your gas and time. Powerline Hill, about 15 kilometres in, is a great place for family tobogganing and fun time. Dropping into the Little Moyie, the cutblocks become a bit steeper, but still great for the beginner or intermediate rider. Salmo, Erie and Ymir were small mining towns that grew up along the right-of-way of the historic Nelson/Fort Shepherd Railway during the gold rush years of 1896 and 1897. Gold, silver, lead, zinc and tungsten were mined in the surrounding mountains and Salmo grew as a centre for supplies and entertainment. Ski Salmo If you’re looking for a fun family ski experience, Salmo has a great local hill just 2 km south of town on Highway 3. Salmo Ski Hill is a volunteer-run enterprise that is a well-deserved source of community pride. With friendly staff, incredible scenery and great winter temperatures, the hill is really a mustdo. Amp up the experience by skiing at night on fully lit runs. Enjoy a wide variety of skiing opportunities suitable for all skill levels. There are six groomed runs: gentle slopes, moguls, steep slopes, racing courses, a half pipe for snowboarders, and a bunny hill will ensure that all members of the family will have a great time. The trails are serviced by a T-bar and a handle tow. If you are interested in cross-country skiing, there are trails for that as well. The ski hill is patrolled by qualified Level 1 and 3 OFA volunteer patrollers. At the day lodge you can warm your toes and fingers and have lunch or a snack. If you haven’t come prepared to ski, but would like to try out the hill, you can rent skiing and snowboarding equipment at reasonable rates. Lift Hours: 5:30 pm to 9 pm Monday to Thursday and 9 am to 3:30 pm Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday nights are made available for hill rentals. Half day pass starts at noon. Fruitvale, originally named Beaver Siding, began as a stop on the Great Northern Railroad. In 1906 a land corporation called Fruitvale Limited purchased a great deal of land on both sides of this stop and Beaver Siding became Fruitvale. Its new name more accurately reflected the valley as it was â&#x20AC;&#x201C; boasting the best fruit growing in the West Kootenay. The Village of was incorporated on November 4, 1952.

Ainsworth & Woodbury It is really hard to believe it now, but back in the early 1880s at the height of the mining boom, 3,000 people lived in what is now the hamlet of Ainsworth Hot Springs. As mining ceased to be profitable, the fortunes of the area diminished and the population fell to what is now less than 100 permanent residents.

X-Country At Its Best The magic of winter in beautiful Kaslo enfolds visitors and locals. A wonderland of snow, mountains and hot springs awaits – a feast for the spirit. Cross country skiing is smack dab in Kaslo’s backyard. The True Blue recreation area has many kilometres of marked skiing trails – woodland paths and gentle grades as well as some good climbs and swift flying slopes. To get to this network of ungroomed trails, head to Kaslo’s air strip near the arena. A pullout is plowed so you can park. You can find a map of the trails on the Kaslo Trailblazer’s website, www. kaslotrailblazers.org Kaslo now boasts a recreation area on the flanks of Mt Buchanan, known locally as “Bucky.” Stop by Pennywise, at 400 A Ave during the work week, for directions and to grab a $2 trails map, or you can find a maps and more information about the Buchanan Wilderness Recreation Area on the Kaslo Community Forest website www.kaslocommunityforest.org/recreation There are a number of cross-country ski events in a season, and you can find information if you visit

SS Moyie
New Denver
For nearly 60 years, sternwheelers provided a transportation lifeline to the many isolated communities on Kootenay Lake. The SS Moyie and her sister ships literally opened the Kootenay region to miners, businesses, farmers and pioneer families. When she was launched on October 22, 1898, there were no roads, no trains, and of course no air travel into these hidden mountain valleys. When she was finally dry docked in 1957, the Village of Kaslo purchased her from the CPR for the grand sum of $1. The ship is now a designated National Historic Site and BC Landmark. New Denver was first settled by prospectors in 1892. Mining for silver, zinc and lead was a mainstay of New Denver’s economy for many years, but by 1929, the mining boom was over. Today, logging, tourism and home based businesses represent the town’s economic drivers.
Winter In The Forest Festival The Kaslo & District Community Forest Society and the Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society host a terrific outdoor community party complete with giant puppets, human dogsled races for charity, cross country skiing fun races, a four on four hockey tournament, fire-making and swede sawing contests, and music and storytelling by the bonfire. Homemade soups will be served along with hotdogs, and you can toast your own bannock over the fire. Finish your outdoor lunch by twirling some hot maple taffy on the snow!
Winter Solstice Come celebrate the beginning of longer days and shorter nights with a community solstice celebration at the pedestrian bridge spanning the Kaslo River. The Trailblazers Society is your host. On Saturday December 20, the annual event begins at 4 pm with a lantern walk from the Railroad Ave trailhead. You may also join the party by parking at the New Denver Highway 31A trailhead, about 1 km west of Kaslo, and walking a short trail to the beautiful covered bridge. bay of quiet waters
This unique lakeside community is embraced by both the Monashee and Selkirk Mountains. The name of the town derives from the native word for “bay of quiet waters” Neqpo’sp. In historical times it was the discovery of ore that brought miners and prospectors to the area. Since there were no roads or railways between the Kootenay mining areas and Vancouver, goods had to be shipped by water transport from Nakusp to Revelstoke where the main CPR line was located and for a time Nakusp became a thriving community on this shipping route. There’s plenty to do in Nakusp once old man winter checks in. Snowmobiling is a fast-growing sport, which appeals to locals and visitors alike. For cross country skiers and snowshoers, there is a network of old logging roads all through this area. You can go to the source of the hot springs for a beautiful winter outing. You can find trail maps at the Visitor InfoCentre in downtown Nakusp or you can download them from www.nakusparrowlakes.com
