Cityshoppers

We Bring IKEA and Other Vancouver Stores to You! Julia Morley 9215 Fisher Ave, Queens Bay 778-227-7456 www.cityshoppers.ca Cityshoppers started in March 2014. At the time, my husband was working up north and had to fly out of Castlegar every three weeks. At the end of each two week shift, I would pick him up from Vancouver, as there were no connections from Calgary to Castlegar by the time he got to Calgary. We were looking for a way to cover a part of the gas. In addition, we had just renovated our house extensively and rented Budget trucks to pick up our kitchen cabinets from IKEA, which was extremely expensive.

Thinking other people might have the same problem, we started an IKEA (and other stores) shopping service for the West Kootenay. While we were able to make the first two shopping trips with just our truck, we quickly had to purchase a trailer because the demand exceeded the space we had in our truck alone. We love the Kootenays, the lake, the people, and the active lifestyle. I like that people are generally appreciative of the service we offer and deliveries are always fun because our customers are excited to receive their orders. We also have a lot of return customers and it is always nice to see them again.

Julia & Paul Morley We have two delivery options: we have central drop off locations for people to pick up their purchases when we’re coming through (nice way to keep delivery costs down), and curbside delivery. We have transported all kinds of items over the past few years – a wheelchair going to a home in Vancouver, a piano coming to Nelson, a sewing table for a local company, an ice cream machine we had to pick up from the Port of Vancouver, recovered bikes from Vancouver Police. Coming up in the future, we may add a Kelowna trip if there is enough demand!

You Have a Project? We Can Dig it. Sean Brenton 250-353-7653 / 250-551-4058 www.brentonindustries.com Brenton Industries started in 2009. The opportunity to buy the earth moving equipment came up and I was curious to find out if I could make it as a self-employed entrepreneur. Thankfully the community trusted my services, supported my endeavour and I’ve been doing it ever since! At Brenton Industries, we offer general excavating (basements, utility services, landscaping), septic installations and repairs, tree work (land clearing, single tree removals, topping and spiral thinning, chipping), excavators, dump truck, skidsteer and compactors. New this spring, I purchased a full-size dump truck to in-

crease my ability to move large volumes of dirt. What I love about my job is helping people to create their visions for their yard or project, big or small. I am constantly amazed at what can be achieved with machinery, especially when you consider the terrain around here! I love living in this area – the geographic setting, the environment around it, all of my friends and family. The Kootenays are a great place for my daughter Ava to grow up and for us all to live. You have a project? We can dig it! For more information, call or email Sean.

As a young woman I moved to Argenta from Toronto. It was paradise then, and twenty-five years later, it is still paradise. My children were born and raised here and they will always identify Kaslo and the Kootenays as home. What I bring to real estate is this personal investment. The area is unique, wonderful and varied. There are a spectrum of properties, from small to large, upscale to rambling and 2

rustic. Bringing together good matches of people and place is what I love about my job. My sense of community is finely tuned and I can identify the nuances of what will work and what may be a challenge for anyone new to the area. For local people needing to change, my network and experience help me find what they need. It’s important to me that we create a community. I want to help my neighbours and invite others in. My business goal is to be able to offer clients choices that best fit their budget and needs. It may take time and research, but being able to provide real life solutions to real estate is important to me.

Kaslo Community Pharmacy Luckiest Pharmacist in the World Ward Taylor kaslopharm@gmail.com 403 Front Street, Kaslo 250-353-2224 It all began in August of 2012 when I purchased Kaslo Pharmacy from James and Shirley Morris. I later expanded to a second pharmacy in New Denver in May of 2015. My family and friends were an amazing help with the extensive upgrades and renovations. Being a small owner-operated business means escaping “corporate pharmacy.” Being able to practise my profession as an independent pharmacist in Kaslo and the New Denver/Silverton area is beyond a dream come true for me. My approach has always been overall wellness and preventative care. We carry

a full range of products to support health – from vitamins and supplements, to special sections devoted to diabetes and seniors, through to spa supplies. Check out our mobility aisle; we have scooters, grab bars and much more to help keep you mobile! I am happy to continue to provide the great service that Kaslo & Area residents have grown accustomed to, while working hard to build the same ties in the Slocan Valley through Silverton and New Denver. Building solid relationships with so many members of the community to the point where I re-

ally look forward to seeing them – this makes my days enjoyable. The Kootenays are amazing because of the connections between people – close ties that you would never see in a larger city. We look out for one another and are happy to lend a hand when someone is in need. As well, I enjoy the healthy lifestyle we have here and the picturesque surroundings.

Commercial, Residential Garbage & Recycling Jon & Dana Carlson 250-434-4313 kootenaywasteservices.ltd@gmail.com The idea of owning this business started years ago while we were living in Kelowna. We wanted to come back to Kaslo to raise a family in the same community that we were so thankful to be raised in, so we asked the previous owner to let us know when he’d be ready to sell. About five years later, after we had moved back home, he knocked on our door, ready to sell! Both of us grew up in families that owned and operated businesses in Kaslo, so we get plenty of advice and support from our parents. We’re excited to provide

the same experience to our kids, as we both value the lessons and opportunities entrepreneurial life has presented to us. Kootenay Waste Services provides commercial and residential garbage and recycling. We serve Shroeder Creek to Castlegar and everywhere in between – Kaslo, Balfour, Harrop/Procter, North Shore, Nelson, South Slocan and Thrums. In the future, we are planning on processing some of our own recycling. It will help keep our pricing competitive, make it easier for people and businesses in remote

areas to recycle, help us to accommodate more clients and hopefully create employment. We’re working very hard to bring this business to the next level and it is quite rewarding to know that we’re building something. We’re so glad to take our son to the same beach and park we went to as kids. Every day we get to say ‘hi’ to so many people who helped shape us, and spend time with our parents, watching them being amazing grandparents.

Yoga With Josana Yog

Bringing Balance, Calm & Serenityy Bring Josana Starbuck Kaslo South Road, Kaslo 6221 K 250-353-7351 josanastarbuck@gmail.com 250-35 il

Josana Starbuck, RYT200, teaches gentle flow prana yoga, emphasizing breath, heart opening and inner transformation. Josana, a longtime resident, moved to Kaslo after falling in love with the beauty and grandeur of the area and the warmth and welcoming nature of the community. She has practised yoga for many years and followed her passion into teaching for the past three years. Yoga is not about attaining perfect poses.

Moderation and the use of props is encouraged. We work within our limitations, letting go of judgment and becoming present to who we are in each moment. The ancient spiritual practices of yoga offer a way to move into stillness, discovering our deeper essence. The heart of a yoga practice is the deepening relationship between mind and body. Physical postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama) work together to open energy channels creating fluidity and flexibility. To see which class is best for you, call or email Josana. Register for the six week beginner classes or the upcoming three hour workshop: Journey Through the Chakras. Now is the perfect time to set your intention to experience the benefits of yoga.

Clean Between Mobile Dental Hygiene Denise Pawlyshyn Kaslo Integrative Health Clinic, 415 Front St. 250-365-8024 cleanbetween@gmail.com www.cleanbetweencastlegar.com

It all started with my mom (my biggest supporter!), who worked in the dental field her whole career. I grew up in the dental office and my first job was cleaning the floors of the clinic where she worked. I had always wanted to have my own clinic one day and after 13 years of working within a dental clinic, I decided to take the leap and start my own practice. In January 2012, I opened my office in Castlegar. My family were huge supporters, they helped me renovate the space...everything from demolition to electric and plumbing to paint and decorating. 4

My favourite thing about being a dental hygienist is teaching people about their mouths. Each and every person, their health and dental history, is unique. I like to give tips for better results and to help my clients link their oral health to their overall health. I love helping to make beautiful, healthy smiles. A funny story about teeth … I have goats and when they were about a year old, I noticed they were missing their two front teeth. I started worrying (being a first time goat owner!) UNTIL I realized they were just losing their baby teeth. Haha. I should have known that!

September 13, 2016

I participate in the Gift From The Heart event every year. This event is held around Valentine’s Day and welcomes all independent dental hygienists across Canada to open their hearts and offices for one day to offer locals-in-need free dental cleanings. It’s always a wonderful day and fully booked. In addition to my office in Castlegar, I also offer mobile dental hygiene in rural communities, including Kaslo, which I visit every second Friday. The soothing surroundings at the Kaslo clinic will relax you and put you at ease during your treatment. Call or email to book an appointment!

Kaslo Building Supplies ACE Hardware

Jeff and Monica Davie 6521 Hwy 31, Kaslo 250-353-7628 www.kaslobuilding.com

Twenty years ago Jeff and Monica Davie took over Kaslo Building Supplies from Monica’s parents, Fred and Elaine Richinger. Back then it was known as Irly Bird. Throughout the years the business has been through a few banner changes but it has always remained independently owned and operated. Kaslo Building Supplies employs between 15 and 20 people through the

seasons. Two of the three Davie boys work at the store, as well as a number of long-time locals, adding to a familiar and friendly atmosphere. The staff and the family’s dedication to the business and their loyal customers are what has helped the store become what it is today. With a strong service culture and commitment to quality, Kaslo Building Supplies works with members of the community to help their building dreams come true.

Since joining the ACE buying group, there have been some positive changes to the store including competitive pricing and a wider inventory of building products and tools. Come in and see the changes and have some popcorn! Check out the garden centre, the new paint products (local painters are really happy with the new products), the kids’ toys and our great selection of animal feed.

Rhonda Ruston Q.C., Lawyer More than 30 Years Experience 2nd Floor, 404 Front Street, Kaslo 250-353-2028 www.RustonLaw.ca

I fell in love with Kaslo and Area D the first time I visited 32 years ago. I was a young lawyer in Lethbridge, Alberta at the time – where I was born and raised. The natural beauty of this place and the incredible gardens of my friends here called me to return year after year, and ultimately compelled me to buy land in Shutty Bench in 1998. Through the following years I spent what time here I could manage, and made the full-time move in March 2008. Living here allowed me to indulge in my passion for gardening and all that rural living has to offer. But it became evident to me that the activities of my “retirement” were not enough for me. I

needed to reach out beyond myself. It was a natural next step to become admitted to the Law SociSylvie Pat ety of BC and open a law practice Rhonda in Kaslo. My career in real estate began when I purchased my first home, which led to me leaving the corporate world behind in sales in 2002. Discovering Kaslo and Nelson over ten years ago is when I fell in love with this beautiful area; from skiing

to hiking and biking, this was a perfect fit for me being a nature and outdoor enthusiast. Living in Kaslo and Nelson has taught me not only how important community is but how special living in co-existence with the wildlife which frequents my property regularly. With 15 years experience in real estate, I always find it interesting when meeting new clients from hearing their stories whether they are buying or selling a home or property, each story is unique. Finding what meets their needs is what is

most important to me and guiding them through the process is my passion. A complimentary home staging consultation is always included when clients list their home with me. Ready to buy or sell, an appointment at your convenience is easily arranged.

& The Residences at Wing Creek Experience a Natural Paradise

Debra Hamilton & Kevin Hoffart 9114 Highway 31, Kaslo 250-353-2475 www.wingcreekresort.com, www.wingcreekresidences.com

Since opening Wing Creek Resort in the fall of 2004, we have hosted thousands of guests from all over the world. We fell in love with the property after selling everything and touring much of North America in search of a business opportunity that spoke to our hearts. We were both delighted to say goodbye to our high-tech, high-stress city jobs and create a new life here – and it is definitely agreeing with us! Wing Creek Resort is now an awardwinning resort, featuring five upscale onebedroom cottages, a spa, retreat centre, hiking trails, flower gardens, an orchard, forest, 6

and of course Wing Creek cascading down to our beautiful, private beach. Our gift shop showcases the work of many local artists as well as the hundreds of jars of organic jam we produce from our very own orchard fruit every year. The spectacular views of Campbell Valley, the Purcell Mountains and Kootenay Lake create an inspirational setting for many honeymoons, anniversaries, elopements, engagements and other special occasions each year. Our resort is also a haven for couples seeking an authentic BC experience or simply a great getaway in the mountains. In addition to vacations, we also offer retreats such as yoga, art, and writing.

September 13, 2016

Most recently, we have teamed up with Dwight and Debbie Smith and Jeff and Monica Davie to expand the resort into an environmentally friendly residential community. An experienced team from Sotheby’s is now marketing our first Hamill Creek Timber Home. The Residences at Wing Creek is being designed as a legacy project featuring high quality timber frame homes on 20 acres of waterfront. We look forward to continuing to provide local employment as the project builds out. If you’re curious to see the resort or learn more about the community, come out and we’ll be happy to meet you, share our vision and even give you a tour if time permits!

We Build Dreams into Reality Dwight & Debbie Smith 13440 Hwy 31, Meadow Creek 250-366-4320 www.hamillcreek.com I first got the “timber frame bug” in 1978, when I moved to the Kootenai area and had an opportunity to introduce timber framing into a couple of projects, including the renovation of the Mariner Inn. After several years of dabbling at timber framing and taking workshops, in 1989 we committed to building only timber frame homes, working out of our back yard and garage in Hamill Creek. From there, the business grew from one employee to our current staff of forty. In the year 2000, we moved our facility to Meadow Creek where we built a new 16,000 square foot shop. We have designed and built timber frame structures in Japan, the British Virgin Islands, throughout Canada and

the continental US, and Hawaii and Alaska. Our projects range from small cottages to luxury residential homes, award-winning lodges, restaurants, boutique hotels and churches. Locally, we can offer complete general contracting services as well. Some of our exciting public projects include the Kokanee Hut and Silver Spray, Kaslo Golf Clubhouse and many residential homes. Both my wife Debbie and I continue to work in the business full-time and our daughter works summer holidays when she’s not in school. It’s wonderful to live

in such an amazing place and community and be able to work at a job and business you are passionate about. It has been a rewarding experience – not only being involved in building great timber frame projects, but seeing how a business, as it evolves, creates so many opportunities within the company for employees to grow and find their “passion” and develop skills, whether it is timber framing, designing homes, carpentry, millwork, project management or office management. The key to our success has been having so many great people working for us.

Emailed E il d Weekly W kl Straight St i ht to t You! Y ! Barb Olson 250-551-7441 www.classicanadianxwords.ca If I were at a trade convention my name tag would read, “HELLO! I’m Barb Olson,” and sprawled across the tag would be the clumsy job title “Cruciverbalist.” It’s a hefty handle that simply means “crossword maker.” Every week I create a ClassiCanadian Crossword which I email to subscribers. I base each puzzle on a theme, sprinkle in some Canadian content and add a dash of humour to my clues. My interest in crosswords began as a child growing up in Kaslo. In my family there was always a communal crossword that my parents (Dick and Dee-Dee Smith) and the kids (Toby, Lorna and I) would pick away at until

it was done. I carried my love for crosswords into my university years and well into adulthood. Oddly though, despite having solved thousands of crosswords over those years, it never occurred to me that somebody actually makes these things! When the light finally flashed on, I knew I had to give this a shot. Once my first puzzle was accepted by the New York Times, I was hooked. Soon my crosswords appeared in the L.A. Times, U.S.A. Today, Canadian Reader’s Digest, Saturday Night Magazine and others. As well, I provided the Nelson Express with their “Kootenay Crossword,” and I co-authored four books of Canadian crosswords. Today,

besides my weekly subscription puzzles, my crosswords also appear in Zoomer Magazine. I love the mental gymnastics involved in making crosswords, and often find inspiration while riding my bike in Kokanee Park or gazing at the lake from our home in Crescent Beach. To take a puzzle for a test drive, check out the website. An annual subscription costs $19.99 (52 puzzles.) They make an easy, wrap-free gift as well!

We continue to serve the advertising needs of small businesses all over the Kootenays, despite being surrounded by newspaper giants, because we are really good at bringing buyers and sellers together. Along our publishing journey we have embraced many new technologies. We are always willing to consider, if not try something new if it has proven itself useful to our clients. We went to a desktop computer from the massive Compugraphic type8

setter; learned the magic of desktop publishing and QuarkExpress; we added a photocopier and fax of our own (that was magic), we figured out how to classify our reader ads (remember when they weren’t? LOL) learned to digitally paginate and send files via FTP, and then moved to uploading directly to a server. We launched our first website in 2001, and figured out how to live update, work a cell phone, Facebook, Tweet, Snapchat … and now we have learned how to build websites for you. Having worked our way through these progressions, we truly understand when other longstanding businesses are hesitant to embrace the shiny new toys. Technology can be intimidating. You know it is well used when you can’t get your 30-something kid off their dumb smartphone! They do everything on them – from keeping track of their friends and family members to texting, sharing videos, photos and shopping for great prices on products and services. Did you realize that 82% of them have either purchased online or shopped online before making a purchase? Do you know how many people that is exactly? We don’t either … but we do know that it is a huge number. These shoppers are entrenched in every marketshare in the West Kootenay. If you don’t have a website, you aren’t being found. A few years ago we realized that we could be even more useful to our clients by helping them step out of the dark into this high speed new world. We hired a professional and trained ourselves in WordPress and have been building fabulous websites for small businesses ever since. We come highly recommended!
