It’s an early morning in June. Zipping down the hill is a 12 year old boy bent low over the handlebars of his bike to reduce the wind drag. From the pack on his back a fishing rod protrudes, the line hooked in, creating an arc like a bow. The fishing line vibrates at a high, barely audible pitch. He crosses the wooden planked bridge and turns right, toward the river mouth. Down at the four corners, a treeplanter leans against the wall at the Mohawk. She’s nursing a coffee and comparing war stories with a chokerman. They are both waiting for the company crew cab to pick them up and take them out to their respective patches in the bush. And so begins a summer day in this small Kootenay town. One street over is Front Street and Kaslo’s downtown. The Treehouse Restaurant is the one of the first to open up for business, but gradually the shopkeepers and workers in the other businesses arrive and unlock their doors. At Barren’s Sports, kitty corner to Kaslo’s famous wooden city hall, Gord sets up the wild turkey decoys on the lawn in front and then goes back inside to haul out the life-size grizzly bear. Kaslo is at least a five hours’ drive away from what anyone might call a city. Its isola on from the box stores, chain coffee shops and traffic of the city is a good part of the reason that it works. In this village of less than 1,000 souls, people rely on each other and support their merchants and other local services. It’s an easy place to fall in love with; the beauty of its setting is almost overwhelming at first, but it’s the community of individuals that compel people to stay. It’s no mystery why the settlement sprang up almost overnight back in the roaring 1890s. The Kootenay Lake and Kaslo River valleys were swarming with prospectors in those days of the western silver and gold rushes. Picture the BlueBelle Bistro on Front Street as it was then – the Silver Dollar Saloon – which was only one of 27 saloons in the new boom town of Kaslo. But those days of frantic mineral exploration are long gone. Why do people stay here now? What is there to do? Look across the brilliant clear water of Kootenay Lake at the mountains opposite. The Purcells appear unmarked by roads and manmade structures. The forested slopes beckon hikers and backcountry skiers, and provide inspiration for musicians and artists. The most dramatic peak, snow-topped for all but a few weeks every year, is the mountain named after the Norse god Loki, a legendary trickster and

a shape shifter. If you’re there when the sun goes down, the peak of Mt Loki (at 2771 metres) is the last one to glow with the rays of the dying sun. Climbing Mt Loki is a rite of passage for many Kaslovians. If you’re someone who enjoys driving, getting here – especially in a sports car or on a bike – is an adventure. The curvy blacktop, the sudden vistas of glaciers or lake demand your attention and your skills. Later, if you find yourself waiting in your car for a line of ducks to cross Kaslo’s main street, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the pace of life here is slow. But residents of the north Kootenay Lake region do get busy. Over 60 organiza ons and socie es, ranging from the Trailblazers to the Lifewriters to hockey and curling clubs, have an ac ve membership. A lot of cultural adventuring is going on as well. You can enjoy live music virtually any week of the year – hi-brow, low-brow…from open mic night at the Kaslo Hotel to a concert by a world renowned soprano or cellist at St. Andrew’s Church. The number of festivals is astonishing, considering the population. Backcountry hiking and biking is huge and the lake provides scope for all kinds of adventures and good fishing too. Come and visit, and make Kaslo the base camp for your own adventures!

T he Story Unfolds... Originally called Kane’s Landing, Kaslo was founded in 1893 and was the region’s first incorporated city. Its peaceful cove, one of only a few such natural harbours along the 100 kilometre long lake, bustled with activity. Ore barges, rowboats, private launches and steamships all jostled for a place alongside the busy wharf. In 1889 and 1890 G.O. Buchanan and brothers George and David Kane came to Kaslo to stake timber claims. Back then the nascent community was more like a muddy space carved out of the forest. When silver mining activity was reported in the area, the Kane brothers subdivided their lease into town lots. There seem to be several stories relating to the name of Kaslo. David Kane was quoted as saying,“For a time when I was alone here I had an old Frenchman trapper staying with me in the cabin for awhile. He told me that years before, when the Hudson Bay Company came in on this lake to get lead from the Blue Bell Mine for bullets, that there was a Frenchman with their party by the name of John Kaslo or Kasleau. He had come up the lake to the head looking for placer gold and had named the river after his name.” In only a few short years, newcomers transformed the rough settlement on the delta. The stumps of the huge fir, cedar and cottonwood trees were pulled and burned; the streets were laid out grid-fashion in lower town and the first proper houses with glass windows and porches were built. Many of these original houses came as a kit; a settler would order an entire house package from the catalogue and have it shipped to Kaslo by sternwheeler.
4 Kaslo and Area Guide 2017| Kaslo BC, Canada
The population soon grew to 3,000 people, most of them intent on seeking their fortunes in the newly discovered mines. At one point in the 1890s, the town boasted 27 saloons. A series of disasters struck in 1894 as fire, flood and gale force winds came in succession. In February, half of the town’s commercial district was destroyed by fire; and in June flooding and hurricane force winds destroyed 60-70 houses, two hotels, the jail and several other two storey buildings. By 1895 and ’96, Kaslo had turned her fortunes around with the completion of the K&S Railway, a public telephone system, and electric and waterworks plants. By 1897 Kaslo had all the services of a progressive mining supply centre: a cigar factory, brewery, dry goods stores, saloons, hotels and brothels, and its own newspaper – The Kootenaian. Over the next 50 years, metal prices fell, mining costs rose and many of the mining industry workers and their families were obliged to move. By the end of the thirties a number of buildings were abandoned. A few years later, during the second world war, these derelict buildings became more or less inadequate housing for the Japanese Canadians who were interned here as a result of a federal government decree under the War Measures Act. For a while fruit-ranching was a thriving industry, then forestry became the mainstay of the economy in the last quarter of the 20th century. Eventually a home-grown economy was created that was varied enough to withstand the changes of time. Lifestyle, tourism, forestry, and a surprising variety of small and home based businesses are now the foundation of Kaslo’s prosperity.

May Days
M ay 20-22
Kaslo has been celebrating May Days in its own inimitable style for over a century. Her first May Days was celebrated in 1892. Plan to share in the excitement of the 125th May Days this year from May 20 – 22. In the old days the sternwheelers ran excursion trips from Nelson and stopped to pick up revellers at every point along the way, while others arrived in every type of boat and conveyance, filling the streets of Kaslo with miners, prospectors and their families. The main event then was a horse race down Front Street, with prizes as high as $250, and a unique “Prospectors’ Race.” May Days has events for all ages and tastes – theatre, musicians in the park, a slow-pitch tournament, a Show ‘n’ Shine, kids’ races, as well as food, craft and wellness booths. On Saturday and Sunday, join the crowds at the Logger Sports Grounds down by the beach. On Monday join the people lined up along Front Street and catch the sights and sounds of the Kaslo Parade. Afterwards, walk down to the Maypole in Vimy Park and watch the children weave ribbons in a traditional Maypole dance, just as their parents and grandparents did when they were children themselves.
Show n’ Shine Come down to Front Street on the Sunday of May Days. From the SS Moyie on up to the top of Front Street, classic cars and trucks will be displayed in a splashy array of gleaming paint and chrome. The street will be closed off to regular traffic, music will be playing and you can grab some great street food too. A few classic car owners have been coming to this event for each of the twenty years Kaslo’s car aficionados have been hosting this fun street party. It’s old home week for the guys – and increasingly the women – who can express themselves through vehicles. This is such a friendly scene that it’s always a relief to the organizers if some out-of-towners agree to perform the necessary but pitfallladen job of judging, even though usually there are as many prizes as entrants. If you see a spectacularly mustachioed man in animated conversation, without doubt you’ve spotted Dave B., one of the Show n’ Shine organizers. Introduce yourself!

Kaslo Logger Sports t - Tougher T h th than it llooks k This is a show you don’t want to miss. Every Victoria Day long weekend lumber Jacks and Jills come to Kaslo’s Logger Sports Grounds from all over North America and even further. These athletes, whose skills are linked more closely to Canada as the land of legendary timber than any other sport, put on a show that always wows the crowds. The sport has a rich and colourful history originating in the logging camps in this country in the late 1800s. Today, there are logger sports competitions across North America, northern Europe and even Australia and New Zealand. Kaslo’s early spring event is the kick-off show for the Canadian western circuit. The individual events are fast-paced and range from tree climbing an 80 foot spar pole to chopping through a 12 inch standing chop block to precariously balancing on a springboard 10 feet in the air! Don’t forget the log burling – competitive one-on-one log rolling – which ends with competitors splashing into the chilly water of the burling pond. In 2016 the crowds were also entertained as they watched Canadian television personality Andrew Younghusband get in the thick of it for an episode of the Discovery channel series Tougher Than It Looks. Probably his finest moment was when, using only his chainsaw, he neatly opened 12 bottles of beer in under a minute. Cool skills! But he did discover that all the logger sports the pros make look “doable”, if not easy, require more than just your Average Joe skills! The venue is the shore of beautiful Kootenay Lake with its backdrop of the Purcell Mountain Range. Logger Sports is run by volunteers and is sponsored by local businesses, groups and individuals. Mark your calendars (Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21) and we’ll see you at this exciting family show. Admission is free!

IDIDaRide-Run iDIDaRide-Run is a spinoff from Kaslo SufferFest, the event which launched Kaslo into the world of mountain biking and trail running races in 2010. Kaslo became famous for the 100 km mountain crossing to New Denver and the epic Peak2Peak 50 km marathon. These events have evolved into the new iDIDaRide-Run hosted by the Kaslo Mountain Bike Club (a division of KORs Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society). The organizers are excited to welcome old and new riders and runners to town. Kaslo is well known for its organizing capabilities and this crew of backcountry enthusiasts have planned several challenging and fun point-2point races for you to choose from. The signature race is the 41 km Ride. Competitors are in for some technical rooty paths, edgy flats with stunning views, testy climbs on shady forested single track, flowy riverside runs and endless vistas from the ridge tops. This course will challenge an experienced rider to do it quickly, but will be very satisfying for the rider who takes a little longer as well. The 41 will be longer next year, growing in length each year as trails are developed and connected. The long term goal is to offer an epic 100 km all around Kaslo! The middle race, the 20 km Ride or Run, is designed to appeal to athletes who are strong, but maybe have never done a race before. Spectacular scenery, some climbing and gliding, and a few technical sections will test your biking and running skills. The 8.5 km Ride or Run is designed for the beginner or ‘tourist’ racer of all ages, who is active but would prefer a lighter commitment. Expect some short climbs and easy downs, a few roots to bounce over and then towards the end, some lovely flowy and well bermed trails through the Family Pump Park. iDIDaRide-Run is, of course, named after the epic dog sled race in Alaska, the Iditarod. More about Kaslo's new backcountry challenge and registration information at http://ididaride.ca Are you a mountain biker? More Than Jazz – The Kaslo Jazz Etc. Fes val offers free-range fun for the whole family. Jazz is in the name, but in the last 25 years and counting, the scope of the music has broadened – grown outward with the event itself, which spills down over the lake, into Kaslo’s downtown and, finally, the summer vibe gets reinvigorated at all the pop-up campsites and on the beaches. As Festival organizer Paul Heinrichs points out “There’s not much traditional jazz in the lineup. But what it really comes down to is – what’s jazz? You could talk for hours about that.” Festival goers will discover a diversity of musical genres, a natural laid-back environment that’s very family friendly, quality sound, and truly exceptional talent. Mountains rising over 10,000 feet from the lake are the backdrop for the performers. The audience can watch and listen while reclining on the sunny, sandy beach, in the shade of the trees, or even while swimming or boating in the water around the stage. Keep an eye on their webpage as the acts are confirmed. Fred Penner, lately a surprise hit on the university/college circuit (you’re never too old for Fred Penner!) is coming, and you have to go see the world famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans. The floating stage will be bouncing! For a very special finale, an act that is sure to have everyone dancing in the sand: the Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra. Find out more at www.kaslojazzfest.com USA Today rated this fes val as one of the “top 10 in North America to get in tune, be outdoors”.

Events 2017
’ ON! We got it goin Winter In The Forest Got the winter blues? February is the shortest month Fe b 1 2 in the year, but sometimes you wonder if it will ever 2018 end. When you feel blue from too much white, it’s time to celebrate outside with music and food and good company. Some unusual events in this outdoor festival include human n dogsled races for charity, Swede sawing competition and the water boil race. Enjoy the sweet stickiness of maple taffy, a steaming aming cup of homemade soup or baked beans, hot dogs and cocoaa and hot cider. Or make your own bannock on a stick over the bonfi onfire. Local musicians and storytellers will entertain you. The festival takes place on BC Family Day every year at the Kaslo airstrip which is just below all the True Blue trails.
When the Light Returns
Dec 20-21
In mid-December, when the sun slips behind True Blue Mountain just after 2 o’clock in the afternoon, people in Kaslo really yearn for the promise of longer days. For people throughout the ages–from the ancient Egyptians and Celts to the Hopi–midwinter has been a significant time of ritual, reflection, and renewal. Though the year’s shortest day heralds the onset of winter, it also promises the gradual return of the sun after a prolonged period of darkness. There are usually a few solstice celebrations happening in the area on December 20 or 21. Join the Kaslo Trailblazers in a lantern procession from the main trailhead at the end of Higashi Way to the covered bridge. Gather at the bridge picnic area for free hot chocolate while you cozy up around the fire pits. Down at the beach, at the spot where a labyrinth of stones provides a meditative pathway, you’ll may find another group observing the solstice. It’s a very welcoming crowd. Join in! Spend the evening of the shortest day of the year in good company!

Kaslo Jamboree
Late Dec 2017
“What does it mean to be a man? Or to be a strong woman in a world where men grapple with the defini on of manliness? These are just some of the ques ons that only The Greatest Hockey Tournament On Earth tackles.” (www.kaslojamboree.com) For eight years now, on the last weekend before Christmas, the infamous, nay notorious, K-Jam has fogged the air in the Kaslo Arena. It’s old home week for all of the graduates of Kaslo’s storied Minor Hockey Association but anybody can play as long as they have a connection to Kaslo. The hockey players always have a lot of fun, they usually raise a bit of money for charity, and the players on the winning team get to hoist the coveted Colander Cup. Plus they get a full year of bragging rights until K-Jam rolls around again next December.

Sandon As the crow flies, the nearly abandoned town of Sandon is 23 km northwest of Kaslo. The route up the Kaslo River Valley, dubbed the Valley of the Ghosts, is a beautiful drive by car, motorcycle or bicycle. If you’re pedalling, the last stretch after turning off Hwy 31A is a steep challenge. The frenzied rush and wild speculation that surrounded the boom–town of Sandon equalled the magnitude of America’s great gold rushes. In the 1890s, Sandon was a city of 5000 with 29 hotels and 28 saloons. Carpenter Creek was flumed right through its downtown. A boardwalk, long since destroyed by fire, kept folks out of the rushing current. Visit the original city hall, the museum (open June 1 to mid-September, seven days a week) and the Silver Smith Power Plant. Close to Sandon are some great hiking, biking and cross country skiing trails.
The Langham - If these wooden walls could talk… There are many old buildings in Kaslo, but arguably none can match the Langham as a witness to the challenges met by all those who have climbed its elegant central stairway. For some, the clapboard sided, cedar shake-roofed building on A Avenue and Fifth Street was their workplace – it was originally built in 1896 as a hotel. It was so busy in town then that each bed was rented out to three miners, who slept in shifts. It later became a bank, a bottling company for ginger beer and sodas, and a boatworks. 75 years ago, in the late winter of 1942, it became the home for eighty men, women and children who did not arrive by choice. It was World War II and the BC government, with an Order In Council, initiated a scheme whereby Canadians of Japanese descent were exiled to the interior of the province. With only one bag of possessions each to remind them of their former life on the coast, thousands were forced to live in tent camps and in the old buildings that had been abandoned after the mining boom went bust. In 1942, Kaslo’s heyday was a distant memory. This influx of new residents made a big impression and animated the half empty town. 75 years later, in 2017 a series of events throughout the summer will commemorate this tumultuous period of our history. The events will culminate in early October over the Thanksgiving weekend with lectures, films, and a gala evening performance and exhibition.
The Langham Cultural Centre is the hub of cultural, arts and heritage in Kaslo. Inside is an 80 seat theatre, 2 galleries, a mul -use room for classes and workshops, 14 studios and the Japanese Canadian Museum. Galleries are open Thursday to Sunday 1 to 4 pm; the Japanese Canadian Museum Sunday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and Saturdays when the door is open. Retrace the footsteps of such notable prospectors as Andrew Jardine, Eli Carpenter, Jack Seaton, and the Noble Five ou it. In the bush, in the Valley of the Ghosts, hikers can s ll find remnants of their storied mine sites, abandoned rail lines, rawhide trails and aerial tramlines.
Kootenay Star Mining Museum This little museum, right in the middle of Front Street, celebrates Kaslo’s rich heritage of mining and forestry. Relics on display depict the toil, the danger and hardships that were experienced by the pioneering families of days gone by. A visit to the museum gives visitors the chance to reminisce about a time when Kaslo was the gateway to the “mining metropolis of the world”; when fortunes were made and lost in a day during the Kootenay mining boom. After your visit, enjoy the warm atmosphere at Teresa’s, a unique coffee shop above the museum, which serves homemade delectables, sandwiches, espresso coffees and ice cream.
SS Moyie Come down to the ship at the bottom of Front Street for a journey into the not-so-distant past that feels like a world away. The sternwheeler belongs to the era when only the steamships could have brought so many settlers and prospectors to this difficult landscape. Kootenay Lake was the only highway. Once on board, you will be immersed in the old days when ladies’ dresses swept around their ankles and men wore woolen suits and always a hat. You can tour her decks and her state rooms, including the elegant Ladies Salon, or go down below and look at all the cargo and the great coal fired engine in her belly. Storyboards at street level describe the scope and scale of the restorations that are still ongoing today. If you hear her whistle blow, someone has succumbed to the message on the little sign “Blow the whistle, $5.” Show me a kid of any age, anywhere, that could resist that whistle cord! The sternwheeler is open daily for self-guided tours from Mother’s Day through to Thanksgiving weekend. She is also home to the Kaslo Visitors Centre. The Moyie is located at 324 Front Street, Kaslo. For more information see www.klhs.bc.ca or phone/fax 250-353-2525.

Kaslo Area Trails Kaslo River Trail - You can traverse this lovely riverine loop,Bracketed by two beet red covered bridges, in under an hour. Starting at the south end of Higashi Way in downtown Kaslo, and heading west along the north side of the river, walk or bike up towards the Trailblazer Bridge. The initial section of the north side trail is wide, with shallow grades and interpretive signs, making it family friendly and for much of the way, wheelchair accessible. Halfway to the bridge is the Family Pump Park, which is lots of fun for mountain bikers young and old. Crossing the bridge to the south side trail, head back down towards town to complete the loop at the newest Unity Bridge. This is an enchanting single track trail with steps, hand ropes and benches at view points. In early summer the Kaslo River is at its wildest.
If you keep going west along the riverside after crossing the Trailblazer Bridge, you’ll be travelling the Lettrari Loop. If it’s a hot summer day, you’ll love this section. There are wooden boardwalks and a couple of little bridges to cross and some deeply shady spots where you can stop and cool your toes in the icy water. It eventually leaves the river, and climbs steeply to the Kaslo airport. Pick up a trail map at a local business or go online to Trailforks.com Wardner Street Lookout or the Viewpoint leads to a ridge with a beautiful view of Kaslo and Kootenay Lake. It is steep with switchbacks; the gain in elevation is about 100 metres. The trail head is located on Wardner Street in upper Kaslo. After the viewpoint you can continue up and head west on the Connector, which will take you to the Buchanan Fire Access Trail, an additional 250 metre climb upwards.

Buchanan Fire Access Trail trailhead is a kilometre north of downtown Kaslo on Hwy 31. You will find a parking area just off the highway next to the truck brake-check pullout. As you hike or bike along this forested trail, it will break out to some viewpoints high above Kootenay Lake. This trail can be travelled all the way westward to The Monster mountain bike trail and the K&S Wagon Road.
Trails A Li le Out of Town Mount Loki – Accessible on the east shore of Kootenay Lake, Mount Loki offers a great 10 km return day hike with spectacular panoramic views from the summit. The hike is not for the faint of heart and requires some exposed scrambling near the top. The trailhead is a 15 km drive on a gravel road north of Riondel up Portman Creek Road. Bring lots of food and water and dress appropriately. Hiking poles really help, especially for the descent. Mount Buchanan Lookout – (High clearance AWD vehicles only.) From Kaslo, head west towards New Denver on Highway 31A for 10 km to the Blue Ridge Forest Service Road, then follow the signs. The Buchanan Lookout features a refurbished forest fire watch tower. This is a great spot for family oriented outings; views are spectacular and flowers are lovely in season. A 2 km loop trail below the lookout provides access to viewpoints. Whitewater Canyon Trail – This hike takes you through alpine bowls and offers spectacular viewpoints, even fascinating remnants of the valley’s mining past. It’s also pretty easy walking. Start with the Whitewater Forest Service Road. It begins from Hwy 31A just after the abandoned mine buildings and before the sign for Retallack. Walk as far as you like and then return. Most people opt for a 3 to 5 hour excursion. Galena Trail– At the turnoff from Hwy 31A to Sandon at Three Forks is the start of the Galena Trail. This easy single track bike or hiking trail follows the old rail bed approx. 11 km to New Denver and features mining ruins and a cable car over Carpenter Creek! Approx 40 minutes drive west from Kaslo. Season: June - October Idaho Peak– This is a beautiful place to view alpine flowers during July and August. The gravel, switchback road begins in Sandon and climbs 12 km past sights of lakes, valleys and old mine sites. Idaho Peak is at 7479 feet and the alpine meadow lies at the 12 km mark. The road near the top may be snow-covered as late as mid-June. View from Idaho Peak trail - Photo: David Grieve
Kokanee Glacier Park. You can get to this scenic but rugged alpine park from Woodbury. After you’ve parked your high clearance vehicle, you will gain almost 1,000 metres as you hike and scramble the 4-6 hour hike to either of two cabins. Get more info on this route into the park at Woodbury Resort. You can reserve the cabins through www. alpineclubofcanada.ca The other way to access the high alpine in this provincial park is to take Hwy 31A west of Kaslo 4 km to Southfork. Cross the bridge you see on your left and keep driving up and up the Keen Creek mainline. It’s just over 14 km to the boundary of the park. From there you are in for some true wilderness hiking as the trails in that section of Kokanee Glacier Park have not been maintained.

Susan Grimble, B.Ed., Cer fied Feldenkrais Prac oner By 50 most of us have pain and s ffness. Is this part of aging or how we use ourselves? Why do we wear out only one hip? For most of us moving is an unconscious ac vity. We get in/out of chairs all day but find it impossible to ar culate “how” we do it. More weight on one leg could contribute to hip problems. Since movement is part of everything we do it is important to learn how to move well. Woodbury It takes less than five minutes to drive north from Ainsworth to Woodbury Resort & Marina and Jones Boys Boats. In 1897, the length of Woodbury Creek was the site of a mining boom. Prospectors staked and then worked their claims all along the creek for kilometres up into the mountains. And as with other communities, the boom didn’t last, the mining declined and the prospectors eventually went elsewhere. Today, Woodbury is home to the thriving resort and marina, and the well known Jones Boys Boats, who offer boat and ATV sales and service. The resort, a natural playground, is open year round, and occupies a breathtaking location on the shore of Kootenay Lake. Woodbury has everything from boat rentals, and camping to a restaurant, convenience store with fishing tackle, chalet rentals, a recreation hall and a swimming pool. When you arrive, head into JB’s Restaurant and enjoy a meal. Linger over dinner and later chat with the locals in the fun and laid back atmosphere of the pub. Woodbury is also a gateway to Kokanee Glacier Park and the Silverspray Cabin. In summer, you would access the park by driving up Woodbury Creek Forestry Road for 13 km to the trailhead.
“The best days are spent fishing!” Kootenay Lake has some of the best fishing in Canada. You can fish by boat, kayak or canoe with bucktail streamers on the surface or plugs down deep. Or cast from shore with spoons and jigs. There are three different types of rainbows in Kootenay Lake; Mykiss, Kamlooper and the world renowned Gerrard rainbow with sizes ranging from 1 to 20 lbs! Not to be outdone is the bull trout or what the locals call dollies. They are great to eat or smoke up for later and range from 1 to 15 lbs. For up to date fishing reports, licensing and gear stop in at Barren’s Sport Shop on 4th Street. A little north of Kaslo, Woodbury Resort can also help you get set up. Want to go fishing with an expert? Contact Hooked-Up Charters at 250-551-3404 www. hookedupfishingtours.com or Reel Adventures at 250-505-4963 www.reeladventuresfishing.com Other options: A Kootenay style houseboat from Kaslo Shipyard will guarantee your crew an epic day on the lake, or find a buddy and rent a couple of kayaks at the Adventure Centre on Front Street. If you catch a really BIG rainbow or dolly (and are still within your limit) be sure to keep it! These alpha predators of the lake are making life difficult for our Kokanee (land locked salmon.) Fishing regulations are online at http://www.env.gov.bc.ca Kootenay Lake is Region 4 in the province.

Ainsworth Hot Springs Check in at the comfortable Ainsworth Motel, The Mermaid or at the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort. Come to immerse yourself in the naturally warm, healing waters and to allow the power of nature to soothe your body and soul. Since time immemorial, the Ktunaxa people (pronounced K-too-nah-ha) have valued the springs as a place for healing. After battle, warriors would come to soak in the spirit waters (nupika wu’u), easing their heart and limbs back from injury and strain through to strength once again. The source of the springs lies in the mountains above the resort, in the Cody Caves area. The water works its way down through porous calcareous rock to flow through to the pools below, renewing the water naturally approximately six times a day.
Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort Today, the site of the ancient hot springs is home to the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort. In a pleasing circularity, the resort is now owned and operated by the Lower Kootenay First Nations Band. They are proud to bring their unique warmth to the hospitality you will experience when you stay at the resort. Staying at the hotel means you have exclusive use of the healing waters in the mornings before 10 am. Float in the steaming open-
air pool, then wade into the horseshoe-shaped cave, where the darkness, the mineral deposits and the humidity all combine to offer an exhilarating experience. The Hot Springs restaurant has been re-vamped to be a welcoming lounge with a family friendly vibe. The resort’s regulars and Kootenay Lake locals are also eagerly anticipating the launch of the new menu which will feature First Nations cuisine.
J.B. Fletcher Museum This was Ainsworth’s general store from 1891 until 1972. With all its original fixtures, it looks much as it did when J.B. (Pop) Fletcher first came to Ainsworth in 1912 to manage it for owner Henry Giegerich. An ancient cash register, medicine bottles, canned goods, and old cereal ads, among other things, make it feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Open during the summer months. Admission by donation.
Next Door To Ainsworth Hot Springs Pools & Cave Experience clean, quiet comfort in newly renovated spacious units that will sleep 2-6 persons. All units have private balconies, boasting panoramic views of Kootenay Lake and Purcell Mountains. • Comfortable Units • Reasonable Rates • Pet Friendly • Wireless Internet • Satellite TV/Radio • Outdoor Hot Tub/Jacuzzi

On the flanks of Mt Buchanan, just a few kilometres west of Kaslo towards New Denver, is a the four-season wilderness recreation area, locally known as “Bucky.” Many trails and logging roads, plus the K&S Wagon Road, criss-cross the area. The Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society grooms over ten kilometres of trail throughout Bucky for classic skiing. Since the elevation of the trails ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 feet, the snow is reliably good through March in most years. There’s a cozy warm-up cabin in the upper reaches, and basic facilities with a tiny woodstove for you to warm up and wind down at the lower range. In mid-April, the south facing slopes lose their mantle of snow and the mountainbikers hit the trails: The Monster and Mr. Skinny are big attractions for the more extreme riders. More sedate riders and hikers love the Wagon Road. Photo: Kendrick Lawless Access: Drive 6.5 kms towards New Denver along Hwy 31A, the pullout is on the right. Ski/ snowshoe/sled the 1 km up to the staging area. The area will remain multi-use, with no fees charged. For more info: wwwkorsbc. blogspot.ca and trailforks.com
At the Kaslo Golf Club there is a spectacular view at each of the 9 holes. Whether you are an experienced golfer or a beginner, there are enough nuances of play to keep you coming back to enjoy the course. The timber frame clubhouse features a fully licensed restaurant with a varied menu, specials and take-out. The food is always fresh and made from scratch. Dine inside or on the covered patio where you can relax and enjoy the view. Occasionally you’ll catch sight of a few deer, elk or a bear strolling across the greens, taking the shortcut to the lake. Have your camera ready! At the Kaslo Golf Club you do not usually have to pre-book tee times – come when you want to play, register and start in order of arrival. There are rental clubs and pull and power carts, and motorcyclists can get free club rentals.
Snowmobiling Kaslo makes a great base camp for some challenging deep powder excursions up to the sunny high reaches of the Selkirk Range. 15 minutes west of Kaslo off Hwy 31A, you can park at the foot of the Buchanan Lookout road to access the Nelson Sno-Goers’ Empire Cabin and some epic sledding terrain. Or drive to the Bjerkness logging road, which branches off from Kaslo West Road just before Kaslo’s small airstrip. Then just go UP.
Heli/Cat/Backcountry Skiing If playing in the deep powder of the backcountry is your passion, Kaslo has several options for heli-skiing or snow cat skiing. After all, commercial heli and snow cat skiing operations were born here! North End of Kootenay Lake Forty km (25 miles) north of Kaslo is the beautiful Lardeau Valley which embraces the small communities of Lardeau, Cooper Creek and Meadow Creek, Howser, Argenta and Johnsons Landing. The rich valley bottom farmland is the result of the ebb and flow over thousands of years by the Duncan and Lardeau Rivers through the flats at the head of the lake. The area was first settled at the turn of the last century when a flood of prospectors searching for rich lodes of ore invaded the area. In 1912, the first of several homesteading families arrived to eke out a living by farming and logging on the bench land. Starting in the 1950s the area saw an increase of people who were looking for a way to build a principled and sustainable community or just to get back to nature. The north end of the lake includes five biogeoclimatic zones, from low-lying wet valleys with towering cedar and cottonwoods to the scree on the peaks dribbling down into spectacular alpine meadows. Wildlife includes deer, moose, elk, black and grizzly bears, mountain caribou, wolverine, wolves and mountain goats. More than 68 species of birds have been recorded. Some of the streams contain native stock of cutthroat and rainbow trout, Dolly Varden (bull trout) and mountain whitefish.
Gerrard Rainbow Trout Would you like to see the largest species of rainbow trout in the world? There is only one place in the world you can see these trout, and it’s a marvellous day-trip to take from Kaslo. Gerrard was once a settlement on the Lardeau River although it’s only a few cabins and a bridge today. For local folks, a trip upriver to picnic and view the spawning Gerrard is a popular Mother’s Day tradition. From the viewing platform, the huge fish can easily be mistaken for logs in the river. Then you see that they are moving, slowly upstream. Not logs! Due to overfishing, the Lardeau River has been closed to fishing rainbows since the 1940s. But this closure has worked in favour of the fish. Back in the 1950s the Gerrard run was down to less than 150 fish. Today, thanks to fishing regulations and the addition of nutrients to the north arm of Kootenay Lake by the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program and the Ministry of Environment, the Gerrard run is approximately 1,000 fish in a year. To reach the viewing platform from Kaslo, take Highway #31 towards Meadow Creek. From Meadow Creek stay on Highway #31 (well-maintained gravel road) until you cross the bridge over the Lardeau River near the outlet of Trout Lake (approx. 45 minutes from Meadow Creek). The viewing platform and parking area is to the right of the road after the bridge.

Duncan Dam Kootenay Lake was dammed in 1967. The Duncan Dam, a 40 metre earthfill dam with no power generation facilities, was the first of the three Columbia River Treaty dams to be built in the Canadian section of the Columbia River Basin. It was designed to control the flow of water from the Duncan River into Kootenay Lake. The Duncan is the tributary that provides about 13% of the water flowing into Kootenay Lake. As the dam neared completion, the valley bottom was cleared of large trees, the original residents of the community of Howser displaced, and some farms and orchards were flooded. When the water began to rise and fill the new reservoir, the original Duncan Lake increased in size from 25 km to 45 km in length. You can visit the dam. Follow the signs on Highway 31 north of Meadow Creek to Duncan Dam – or do the armchair version! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoOTEZFrJGA Water in the Duncan Lake reservoir fluctuates seasonally by as much as 30 metres in elevation. When the water is low in winter and early spring, you can still see traces of the prior settlement and the ghostly stumps of the trees. Operations of the dam can cause fluctuations in water levels downstream, at the north end of Kootenay Lake. This is an attractive area for canoeing, but care must be taken because of the potential for sudden flooding. For reservoir information call 1-877-924-2444.
Lardeau Valley Museum A little north of the Meadow Creek town centre, just past the Lardeau Valley Community Hall, is a small museum dedicated to local history. It is open during July and August or by appointment, email museum.lvhs@gmail.com. If the museum is not open it’s worth stopping anyway. There is still a fair bit to see just roaming about the grounds. The buildings themselves are quite interesting and six interpretive signs posted outside give a good sense of time and place back in the day. The history lessons become hands-on at the Lardeau Valley Fall Fair every year as some of the old equipment is still functional.

Growing (Up) With Art
Artwalk
Almost 400 years ago, Shakespeare wrote “All the world’s a stage‌ and one man in his time plays many parts‌â€? On the small stage of Kaslo, if any artistic production is to come off, there are dozens of people who never fail to pitch in, create the sets or costumes, or tune up and play with the band. And it happens all the time. For instance, every couple of years the school’s drama department, under the direction of the unstoppable Jill Holland, puts on a major production. For a school (all grades, from Kindergarten to grade 12) with a student population of just 222, its theatrical ambitions are high. The sets and performances are consistently impressive, thanks to the mentoring from Kaslo’s artistic and musical adults, who manage to make the most of the confidence and raw talent of Kaslo’s kids. After school, most days of the week, if you walk by the Langham Cultural Centre, you’ll hear violin, cello, guitar and piano lessons in progress. The children who come from up the lake to attend school in Kaslo also bring a busload of talent to Kaslo’s cultural ride. (Argenta, particularly, is well known for the quality of musicians it produces.) At just about any time of year you can sign on for art classes, either private lessons or through Selkirk College, which has a campus on Front Street.
is a fusion of visual art and performance. It is undergoing a metamorphosis of sorts in 2017. North Kootenay Lake Art & Heritage’s David Stewart says there “are plans to make it a more celebratory event with musicians, food, and guided tours‌â€? Sounds like fun! Details will be made available as the plans unfold. The best way to know what’s coming up is to keep an eye on the events listings in the Pennywise paper or on Facebook VisitKasloToday.

GLORIOUS & L ocal
FOOD IS LIFE and good food is the promise of living well. How evocative is the scent of a ripe tomato warm from the sun? A chilly apple plucked from a branch? Good fresh food brings us to where we are, the soil beneath our feet and the people with whom we are sharing. Kaslo was the first community in Bri sh Columbia to adopt a food charter. In the Kootenays, the sustainability of the supply chain cannot be taken for granted. Nature is always seeking the level: the same forces that created our fertile valleys also, occasionally, make our roads impassable. And there are so many other factors, besides transportation, that make choosing locally grown a preferred option: supporting the enterprises of your neighbours, for one; knowing what’s in, or what is not in, your meal is another.
Church basement. Its director, Patrick Steiner, a farmer by avocation, designs programs to encourage residents to grow food and process it for winter keeping. The Food Hub sponsors the Edible Garden Tour in July and stocks a lending library of books and tools, including a large hand-cranked apple press. On pressing day in September, neighbours get together with bushels of apples for an afternoon of juice making. Little kids love to throw the apples in the hopper. It’s a sweet and sticky process from beginning to end. Much of the farmland that feeds folks in Kaslo and area lies at the head of the lake in the spectacular and fer le Lardeau Valley.
The vegetable gardens on the east facing flanks of the Purcell Mountains in Argenta and Johnsons Landing are warmed by the late afternoon summer sun, long after the “Sustainability central” in Kaslo is the Food sun disappears behind the villages on the Hub, which operates out of the United western shore of Kootenay Lake. But the morning sun belongs to Meadow Creek the Shutty Bench 250-353-2594 and farms closer to Kaslo.

Reversing the trend of the twentieth century, the number of acres under cultivation has been increasing. It’s a fact that high land prices make it difficult for farmers to make a go of it, but the innovative ideas of Lakehead and Beyond Produce Society are making an impact. Young farmers can find mentors, and can rent land and equip-

ment to get started without having to make a big capital investment. Adding to the viability of local food growing and marketing is the increasingly high cost of foods imported over long distances. Get a taste of our area at Kaslo restaurants, most of which choose to cook with locally grown produce whenever possible. Kaslo Front Street Market, Cornucopia and Sunnyside Naturals all stock the organic produce grown nearby. A newcomer on the shelves is Mr. Mercy’s Mushrooms, grown right here in Kaslo. Try a freshly “hatched” oyster or elm mushroom – you’ll never go back to plain white buttons! Besides farmers, there are a surprising number of food entrepreneurs. Having mastered the ancient technique of controlled fermentation to raise their breads, Kaslo Sourdough Bakery owner Silvio Lettrari has applied his knowledge to a line of pastas. Pasta Fermentata – the world’s first sourdough pasta, is sold throughout western Canada. The pasta is an excellent product with a backstory that describes an intriguing foray into the art and science of fermentation. Find out more at www.pastafermentata.com Be sure to head into Eric’s Meat Market. Their signature sausages are made the oldfashioned way, in small batches using the same equipment that this third generation business has meticulously maintained since 1924. Also at Eric’s are homemade meat pies, soups by the litre and even the chieftain o’ the puddin’ race – haggis! For a northern European inspired feast, try any of Eric’s sausages and serve them with Michael Silver’s sauerkraut made from cabbages grown at Earth Temple Gardens. Bon appétit!

During the summer, the outdoor markets are fun places to go to fill your picnic basket. Fortify yourself for a morning of fine food-sourcing with a cup of coffee brewed from Kaslo’s Bean Roasting beans. At the Kaslo Saturday Market, you’ll want to choose a jar of Elaine Smith’s preserves which all begin with the bounty of the Smiths’ Kaslo gardens. It’s a good idea to arrive early to be sure of purchasing Croissant Moon’s famous chocolate and savoury croissants before they sell out. The big ones go first! Jane Gao’s (Rawsome Delight) Asian inspired appetizers, desserts and kimchi get rave reviews for creativity and flavour. Dawna McLellan’s musical and poetic talent also finds expression in her line of fine fare with the Feed Your Soul label.
North “up the lake” (that’s a Kaslo expression) there is another market that takes place in the summer on Sundays, the Lardeau Valley Sunday Market, also open from 10 am to 2 pm. Besides food, expect lots of hooping and music and a good time. Wednesdays, the place to do lunch is the Soup Kitchen at the Argenta hall. Have a bowl of soup and hang out with the people who live in this special part of the world, all the while enjoying some toe-tapping music!
