Author and broadcaster Mark Forsythe and journalist Greg Dickson will be giving a presentation about their most recent book, From the West Coast to the Western Front: British Columbians and the Great War (Harbour Publishing). Come down to the Castlegar & District Public Library, 1005 3rd Street on Friday, April 17 at 7 pm. It has often been observed that the first world war jolted Canada into nationhood, and as Mark Forsythe and Greg Dickson show in this compelling book, no province participated more eagerly in that transformation or felt the aftershock more harshly than British Columbia. In From the West Coast to the Western Front, Forsythe, host of CBC Radio’s mid-day show BC Almanac, marks the 100th anniversary of World War I by teaming with historian Greg Dickson and the ever resourceful BC Almanac audience to compile a sweeping portrayal of that crucial chapter of BC history. Of the 611,000 Canadians who fought for King and Country, 55,570 were from British Columbia – the highest per capita rate of enlistment in the country. Of that contingent, 6,225 died in battle, a critical loss to a fledgling province of barely 400,000. Compiling stories, artifacts and photos sent in by BC Almanac listeners from across the province, this volume tells of submarine smuggling, bagpipes lost on the battlefield and of the ongoing struggles by soldiers who made it home. It tells of battles that set records for mass death amid conditions of unequalled squalor, but also of the heroism of front-line nurses and soldiers like George Maclean, a First Nations man from the Okanagan, who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal. By turns devastating, harrowing, insightful and miraculous, these stories reveal much about the spirit and resilience of a people who survived one of history’s greatest disasters to build the province we have today. Mark Forsythe was the long-standing host of CBC Radio One’s BC Almanac. Raised in Toronto, Forsythe moved to BC in the mid-seventies and has come to know the province well through broadcasting assignments in Smithers, Prince George, Prince Rupert, the Okanagan and Vancouver. Greg Dickson was a journalist and producer at CBC radio and television for over 20 years. He also taught journalism at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Café Langham Kootenay Archaeology Kootenay Archaeology is the Langham’s second talk in our 2015 series. Discussion at Café Langham will range from modern and local applications of archaeology, with the examination of the Kaslo Bay boat launch project/process to our region’s fascinating pre-contact history. Ian Tamasi (BSc, RPCA) has been working in the field of archaeology in the East and West Kootenays since 2003, involved with cultural resource management in the forestry, hydro-electric, mining and residential sectors. Employed by Tipi Mountain Eco-Services since the incorporation of the company in 2011, he manages day to day operations and fieldwork. Tamasi has been involved in a variety of academic projects including: a Paleo-Indian to middle period site at Lake Minnewanka (Banff ), a middle-to-late period bison pound site in Fish Creek Provincial Park (Calgary), various oil sands development and large scale excavations in the Little Bow Reservoir basin (S. Alberta). Besides fieldwork, Ian has a keen interest in Public Archaeology, educating youth (of all ages) about the region’s fascinating 12,000 year pre-contact history. Join us Thursday April 23 at 7 pm at the Langham Cultural Society in Kaslo. Donation at the door, and youth are free! Mr. Tamasi will also be involved in the Langham’s Columbia Basin Youth Program, Archaeology Outreach. New Look At The Kaslo Thrift Store

This winter many members of the Hospital Auxiliary Society have worked hard to improve the Thrift Store. It’s brighter and cleaner, and it’s easier to find what you want. Our prices are the same and we still aim to reduce waste, recycle and re-use. Now spring is here, we hope to return to our summer hours of being open 3 days a week. But we need more volunteers. So what does volunteering at the store entail? If you like meeting the public and can spare three hours a week, or every other week, we would be happy to show you how to work at the front of the store. If you could spare only two hours a week, or every other week, we need people to come in on Mondays to sort donations, or keep the store tidy and attractive. Either job is a lot of fun, with a very friendly group of people. Shifts are flexible, so you would not be committed to a fixed day at the store if you are out of town. All our profits go to support the health and wellbeing of our community. Breaking Boards Breaking Chains

Did you know that there are more slaves today than ever before in human history? An estimated 36 million men, women and children are held as modern-day slaves in the world today. Master Dean Siminoff and the students of Kootenay Christian Martian Arts School here in Nelson are participating in their third annual Breaking Boards Breaking Chains event to raise awareness and financial support to help free modern-day slaves. The school asks that you join them on Saturday, April 18 from 1:30 – 5:30 pm at the Nelson Civic Theatre in their demonstration and stand against oppression. There will be a brief video about the work of International Justice Mission, an organization that investigates, rescues and rehabilitates victims of oppression as well as prosecutes the criminals who have broken the laws that are in place to protect the poor. This will be followed by a fantastic breaking demonstration by the students and instructors from the school. We will end the night with a screening of Karate Kid (2010) by donation. All ages are welcome and all proceeds will be donated to IJM and their fight for justice. Please join us and support the Champions of Freedom and Justice in our community.

Brutus and Bruiser are both 8-year-old black and tan German Shepherd/Border Collie mixes. They came to us at the BC SPCA Nelson Branch when their living arrangements changed and their owner was not able to exercise them enough. They would both beneﬁt from a diet with frequent exercise as they are both slightly overweight, but luckily they are an energetic pair and just love their walks! They are well trained and will respond well to commands, especially if there is treat in it for them. In the house they are very calm and relaxed; when out for walks they can pull a bit on lead but are great off lead at the dog park or on the trails. Having grown up together since they were puppies, they are best buddies and we are hoping to adopt them out together. Primary Health Nurses in Kaslo The Primary Health Care model is based on health promotion and disease prevention. The Primary Health Nurses play a key role in this model and the services offered in Kaslo are many. The nursing services are offered by Georgie Humphries and Rhonda Addison and cover the clinic from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Working together with other members of the health care team, they are more than happy to help you with your health care needs. The list of services are as follows: Women’s Health: including regular PAP screening, breast examination, sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing (if requested), education around women’s issues such as aging, issues around the time of menopause and coping strategies to manage stress and anxiety. Chronic Disease Management: This features strongly in the nurses’ practice. Primary Health Care referrals can be requested for the management of high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), 24 hour blood pressure monitoring, stopping smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and osteoporosis teaching. Cognitive screening is also available. The Heart Manual is a 6 week program available for those clients who have suffered a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack, or stroke. The program engages the patient to participate in his/ her road to recovery. It addresses the issues which caused the event and teaches the client how to make the necessary lifestyle changes. The nurses work closely with the physicians and other team member to ensure that the best and most appropriate care is obtained for the client. What is the Urgent Access clinic at the Primary Health Centre in Kaslo, and when is it held? It is held from 3:30 – 4:30pm and you will need to book an appointment for it. It is for times when you have a problem that is not an emergency, but needs to be looked at promptly. This could include a bladder infection, a rash, worrisome cold/cough symptoms, worrisome vomiting/diarrhea and minor injuries. It is not for long standing issues, for a prescription reﬁll, for a referral to another doctor or service, or to ﬁll out forms. For such needs you will need to book a regular appointment with a doctor at the clinic. If you take regular medications, do plan ahead so that you have an ongoing supply and book a regular appointment with your doctor when you need more. Urgent access appointments are short 5 – 10 minute appointments to address one topic. This way, the doctors can help a number of people with urgent problems. If you are not sure if your problem is appropriate for the urgent access clinic, call the clinic at 250-353-2291, and select option 5. One of the receptionists will help you decide and, if needed, book your appointment. The best time to call is between 9:00 and 9:30am to ensure that you get an appointment, since there are limited spots available. When coming to the clinic with cold/cough symptoms, please don’t forget to wear one of the masks provided, and wash your hands or use the hand washes provided. You will be less likely to spread germs to others. Emergencies If you have an emergency, call 911 to call an ambulance. Kaslo Emergency is open Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm. When not in these hours, or on weekends or holidays, you should call 911. The Kaslo ambulance is available to take emergency patients to the emergency in Nelson or beyond. Will I be charged for this ambulance service? The charge for an ambulance trip is $80. Prevent dowager’s hump while you’re young While “forward head posture” is a growing problem even among young people, Dowager’s Hump (that hump at the top your back) generally develops later in life. That’s because it results from years of repeating damaging patterns.

Here’s how that happens: poor posture, injuries, and some movements (some of them quite subtle) form pathways between your muscles and your brain. Over time, joint and ligament sensors known as proprioceptors – whose job is to inform the brain of joint angles, muscle tension, and muscle length – get “lazy.” That’s when communication between brain and body becomes muddled. Fortunately, this is not inevitable, because with regular exercise, healthy patterns can be established between your brain and your muscles. The ﬁrst step is to maintain correct posture - head and spine aligned. Be cautious and aware of your posture when using electronic devices. Sit straight and raise your head and shoulders frequently. If you are working at a computer, make sure that you set up the monitor of your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. That way you are always looking down a bit as you look at the screen and there is less of a tendency to poke your chin forward. Here’s a quick exercise you can do between texting/gaming time - stand against a wall with feet shoulder width apart and heels touching the wall. Reach up with one arm as if climbing a ladder, bring arm down while raising the other. “Climb the ladder” 20 times while keeping your head and upper back against the wall and your eyes looking ahead.
