Kaslo photographs make it to Ottawa Library and Archives Canada (LAC), home of the National Photography Collection, has acquired the negatives and contact sheets for Gordon Brown’s Butcher, Baker...the Faces of Kaslo project. These local portraits, made from 1986 to 1992, were combined with those of Kaslo’s first photographer a hundred years earlier, A. T. Garland, to produce a book marking Kaslo’s centennial in 1993. Six exhibitions of Brown’s work were presented at the Langham during this period and a selection of images from the first in ’86 was previously acquired by LAC. The original exhibition prints will stay in Kaslo and will be donated to Kootenay Lake Archives. The acquisition of Brown’s work also includes the old Calgary Greyhound Depot, negatives, contact sheets and exhibition prints from 1972; negatives and contacts from a portfolio shot at the Indigenous village of Spahomin (Upper Nicola Band) near Merritt, BC in 1973; the Canadian Artist series, 1986 to 2016, including many performers from the Kaslo Jazz Festival; negatives and contacts from the Japanese Canadian ‘Writing the Wrong’ event at the Langham in 1992. This material will join portfolios previously acquired by LAC: negatives, contacts and prints of Calgary’s Peking Cafe from 1977 and the prints from Spahomin and Butcher, Baker. Regarding the Kaslo material Brown said, “I fell in love with Kaslo when I first saw it as a fifteen year old in 1958 and now that I’ve made my home here for forty years, it’s very gratifying to realize that a representation of the people and their accomplishments, who make up this community will be preserved at a national level. I’m very grateful to those who let me into their lives, however briefly, in order that Butcher, Baker could come to be.” – Gordon Brown

Pastures and hay fields are good options. Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional performing soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Immunization program to protect against measles The Ministry of Health is launching a measles immunization catch up program for school age students due to the recent outbreaks in the province. Students in SD8 – Kootenay Lake School District who have not previously been immunized against measles or require their second dose are eligible. The program will be offered by local health authorities and runs April through June 2019. A series of immunization catch-up clinic days will be scheduled for those children who may be unimmunized or not fully immunized for measles. Florence Zakordonski It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Florence Zakordonski who passed away peacefully at Columbia View Lodge in Trail. Florence was born in Glade, BC to Mike and Lena Stoochnoff and was the youngest of four children. At the age of 15, Florence worked in Nelson at the McDonald Jam Factory, where she bottled pop, and the 4X Bakery. At age 17, Florence started working at her uncle’s laundromat, which was located at the Reno Motel, in Salmo. It was there that she met her husband, Basil. Shortly thereafter they bought the Reno Motel and began sharing 65 wonderful years together. Florence was well known for her cooking, especially her Borscht, which was a favorite for all who had the pleasure of tasting it. She worked in many restaurants in Salmo and worked at the Sheep Creek Mine as a short order cook. Florence was a loving, soft-spoken, compassionate person and often stated “I love everyone.” This is what led her to her career with the Nelson Home Support from 1992 until 1999 when she retired. Florence travelled to California, Hawaii and across Canada and in her early days enjoyed curling, square dancing, golfing, playing music and bingo. Later in life she became a member of the Old Time Fiddlers and The West Kootenay Bluegrass Society. She and Basil would spend many hours entertaining people at countless events in many locations including senior homes throughout the Kootenays. Florence is survived by her four children Shirley (John) Hudec, David (Theresa), Dwayne (Dena) and Sandi (Tom) Oorthuis; her grandchildren David Jr, Celena (Shane), Raycene (Tyler), Kaylee, Kyle, Brittany (Charles), Sherri, Darcy, Mantis; and her great-grandchildren Jaxon, Keegan, Madison, Shyanne, Lily, Bethany, Ruthie and Paityn; and great-great-grandson Jackson. The arrival of a new season can be an exciting time. Homeowners may have renewed vigor to start home renovation projects or even tackle some cleaning and organization tasks.
