Write a Letter – Change a Life
International Human Rights Day
The Nelson Amnesty group is standing up for human rights and inviting the community to join in Amnesty International’s annual Write for Rights campaign, a global letter writing campaign around International Human Rights Day on December 10. It offers the public the opportunity to write on human rights issues and bring meaningful change to people and groups who need support to uphold their human rights: Saturday, December 8 at Nelson Public Library 10 am – 3 pm and Sunday, December 9 at Oso Negro Café 10 am – 3 pm. “When hundreds of thousands of people around the world get together and send a clear message demonstrating they will stand by a person or group whose human rights are being violated, the impact is huge. It gives people the strength to keep going”, says Judith Fearing, Nelson Amnesty organizer. “It also sends a message to those who are violating human rights that they cannot keep their crimes secret because the world is watching. Every letter, email and petition signature chips away at the problem.” Phyoe Phyoe Aung, Myanmar, a beneficiary of an earlier campaign, wrote: “Thank you very much each and every one of you. Not just for campaigning for my release and the release of other prisoners, but for helping to keep our hope and our beliefs alive.” This year, all ten cases focus on women human rights defenders, to celebrate the role of women who stand up against injustice and lead the charge for change. At the same time, we will also show how discrimination, abuse, intimidation and violence uniquely and disproportionately affect women and in particular, women who speak out in society. A full list with more information about the ten cases featured in this year’s Write for Rights campaign is available at www.writeathon.ca. For more information, contact Judith Fearing, 250-551-4456. Submitted by Judith Fearing
The Amnesty International group in Kaslo will be at the Bluebelle Bistro on Saturday, December 8 from 2 – 4 pm to write to individuals for International Human Rights Day. You will select a card or cards and write your own words of support and encouragement to help lift the spirits of those undergoing incredible abuses. This is a reminder to them that people around the word are aware of their plight and are working to help rectify it. Amnesty International reports that such cards offer immeasurable hope for those in despair. You can choose to write individuals in Morocco, India, South Africa and Kenya. Donations gratefully accepted to help with postage. Submitted by Shelagh Smith

250-353-1053 kootenaytrailsphysio@gmail.com When I graduated from UBC with my Master of Physical Therapy and returned home to Cherryville, my husband and I knew we wanted to move into the Kootenays. I reached out to Elizabeth Scarlett after hearing about her retirement and after a few visits to Kaslo it was an easy choice to make the move this way! I have only been open for 2 weeks, but I know
Elizabeth ‘passing the ball’ to Nikita without a doubt we chose an amazing community to move to and become a part of. We look forward to enjoying all the wonderful things Kaslo has to offer. Thank you to Kaslo for being so warm and welcoming! Special thanks to Elizabeth, for going above and beyond to ensure that the opening of this business could happen. - Nikita Harvey MPT, BHK

Youth Centre to take over day to day operations of City Parkade On January 1, 2019, the City of Nelson parkade located at 420 Vernon Street will transfer operation from the current contracted Parkade Operator, Jim Reimer to the staff at the Nelson and District Youth Centre. The decision to move to an internal operator coincided with Mr. Reimer’s contract ending in December and the overall capacity available at the Youth Centre to take on this new enterprise. “The City has been incredibly pleased with how the parkade has been operated over the past 22 years.” Says Colin McClure, Chief Financial Officer. “Jim has been integral in the successful operation of the parkade, including increasing patron use.” The Youth Centre currently manages the City Campground and provides a number of youth in our community employment. This social enterprise employment model has been very successful and will be applied to the operation of the parkade as well. The Youth Centre will employ local youth at the parkade and provide the same level of service that currently exists. Day-to-day operations will remain the same going forward, with an emphasis on excellence in customer service and safety. www.nelson.ca BOX YOUR CLASSIFIED AD! As we head into December and the days become shorter and cooler, we know that the holiday season is just around the corner. At North Kootenay Lake Community Services, we are gearing up for our annual Food Hub fundraising event. Last year saw a record-breaking year for the Kaslo Food Cupboard with over 3,400 visits. The Kaslo Food Hub is not just about feeding hungry clients. At the heart of our mandate is food access, food skills and improved food security for Kaslo and Area D residents. The Harvest Share food recovery program provides high quality food donated by local businesses and individuals. In 2017, the recovered food value was $46,483, with 14 local businesses participating. The Feeding Families Not Bears program helps to avoid humanbear conflict by matching residents with excess fruit with volunteer harvesters. The fruit is shared amongst the tree owners, harvesters and Food Hub. 6,000 lbs of fruit was harvested in 2017. Food from the Kaslo Food Cupboard kept hunger at bay for 85 unique individuals in March alone. The need is constantly growing, so your support is requested to keep the Food Cupboard running. If you know someone in need of a Christmas Food Hamper, application forms are available from the Kaslo or Meadow Creek Family Centres, the Food Hub (Tuesdays 10 am – 1 pm or Thursdays 5 – 7 pm), the NKLCSS office at 336 B Avenue, or online at www.nklcss.org Applications are due back by December 7. Your contribution can make a profound difference in the lives of people in need. You can help us by:

Cassie is a beautiful 8-year-old girl looking for a quiet home. Her previous owner recently went into a senior care facility and can no longer care for her. Cassie has not been around dogs or children but might adapt with time and patience. She also hasn’t been around other cats and would prefer a home without any. Cassie is currently looking for a forever home to love her for who she is, a very sweet, shy senior who will do better in a quiet, loving home. For more information on Cassie, please contact the BC SPCA Nelson Branch at 250-352-7178.

Century 21 Mountainview is pleased to welcome Heather Kentrop to their team of professional Realtors! Born and raised in Toronto, ON, after dabbling in culinary school, I indulged my wanderlust and moved West to Squamish, BC. There I met my wonderful husband, Tymen and we welcomed our daughter Trinity. In 2006 we made the momentous decision to move to Castlegar and have never regretted a moment. We love it here! I’ve worn many hats in my work life. I’ve been a veterinary assistant, office manager, I worked for a real estate appraisal firm and for the last 5 years I’ve been head receptionist at a busy chiropractic and wellness centre. One theme has always strung all my jobs together, my love of working with people and making their worst day better and their good days the best! I hope to provide my clients with honest, open and knowledgeable service. I want to make your real estate experience the best I possibly can.

Bringing the latest technology to communities
Much of life today revolves around technology. More and more people are seeing new opportunities in the areas of video and music production, creating digital art and animation or recording their own podcasts. Yet not everyone has access to the technology required to participate or thrive in this digital world. Soon, more Columbia Basin residents will be able to access digital equipment and software, with support from Columbia Basin Trust’s new Community Technology Program. The two-year, $1.5 million program will provide grants and support to registered nonprofits and First Nations and local governments that operate public spaces like libraries and community centres. These organizations will be able to outfit their public space with sophisticated digital equipment so that residents can access the latest technology to help bring their creative ideas to life. “It’s easy to say that everyone should be online these days, or using state-of-the-art digital equipment, but not everyone has the means to do so,” said Johnny Strilaeff, Columbia Basin Trust President and Chief Executive Officer. “This new program will help level the playing field so that Basin residents can enhance their digital literacy and get creative. They can try out things like 3D printers, robotics kits or receive training to learn, connect and create using technology for free at community spaces.” Creating a tech-enabled community space may include purchasing equipment such as desktop computers with specialized software, video cameras and digitization and recording studio equipment. The program will also support renovations to house the equipment, or acquiring suitable furniture. Educational and training components that teach the public how to use the equipment will also be supported. The application process has two stages. First, interested organizations must submit an expression of interest by December 17, 2018. Selected organizations will work with a program advisor to develop the concept and write the application. A second intake will be held later in 2019. Learn more at www.ourtrust.org/communitytech This program is one of the ways the Trust helps communities address their priorities. It also supports community efforts through several other programs, including its Community Development Program and Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Programs. Learn more at www.ourtrust.org/community Visit www.ourtrust.org or call 1-800-505-8998 for more information. Submitted by CBT
