The Alzheimer Society of BC is inviting Nelson residents to come together and join them in changing this by registering a team at the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, on Sunday, May 5 at Nelson Rotary Lakeside Park. The Walk is the Alzheimer Society of BC’s flagship fundraiser. It provides a meaningful way for Nelson residents to celebrate and remember people in their lives who have been affected by dementia and take action at the same time to raise critical funds and awareness within the community. “There is a lot of misconception and fear surrounding dementia. cont’d from pg 9 encounter stigma and feel isolated. We invite Nelson residents to gather their friends, family and colleagues and create a team for the Walk to show their commitment to building a dementia-friendly society: a place where people affected by dementia are welcomed, acknowledged and included,” says Maribeth Friesen, the society’s regional manager for the Northern and Interior Regions. As well as reducing stigma, teams are essential to the Walk experience. “Teams create such incredible momentum at the Walk. They encourage, motivate and support each other, and this camaraderie is really inspiring,” says Friesen. Funds raised at the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s will help the Alzheimer Society of BC provide support and education programs that directly benefit Nelson residents. To set up a team, simply go to www.walkforalzheimers.ca and follow the prompts. Need an extra incentive? Teams that register online before February 28 will go into a draw to win a pizza party. Together, we make memories matter. Registration at Nelson Rotary Lakeside Park begins at 11 am and the walk is set for noon. Submitted by Gord Woodward

Diane Schreiber has been working at Front Street Market since May 1990, and she has seen the store go from a Shop Easy, to an IGA, to a Marketplace and for the last 10 plus years, Front Street Market. Diane was born in Quebec and moved to the Kaslo area when she was one. She loves horses, local history and raises English labs. Diane is very excited that this May she will become a Nana. Diane’s favourite part of the job is getting to meet and interact with her customers and co-workers. We appreciate Diane’s sense of humour and the leadership role that she has taken on over the years, from Meat Manager to her more recent position of Bakery/Deli Manager. Diane says it’s her goal to be a candlestick maker one day, as she has already been a butcher and a baker!

NOTICE TO PUBLIC: Notice of beach and boat launch closures on both sides of the lake at the orange bridge. Nelson Hydro is advising the public that the boat launches and surrounding areas on both sides of the lake at the orange bridge will be closed to the public for approximately one month this spring. Nelson Hydro is installing new high voltage power line marine cables that cross the lake adjacent to the orange bridge. “This new line is not just a benefit to North Shore customers, but to all Nelson Hydro customers. With this new high voltage marine cable crossing, Nelson Hydro is laying the foundations needed to power Nelson Hydro customers well into the future.” Dan Geissler, Operations Manager with Nelson Hydro. Visit the City’s website at www.nelson.ca to see a map of the affected areas. When will this work be done? x Commencement Date: March 4, 2019 (tentative) x Completion date: April 8, 2019 (tentative) Why is it important for you, our customer? x The existing cable has failed twice and is past its life expectancy. x This new cable lifespan is approximately 45 years. x This new cable is better because of its increased power carrying capacity. x This new cable will improve North Shore reliability and city power supply redundancy. x This has been sized large enough to manage load, not just now, but 25 years from now. How will the beaches and boat launches be affected? x Construction fencing will close off both of the areas by the boat launches. x Boats that are anchored in front of the boat launches or stored on the beaches will have to be relocated. x There will be expansive digging at both sites. x While barging material across the lake, boaters must stay clear.

Southwest of orange bridge – by Lakeside Park & boat launch.

Northwest side of orange bridge – at the end of Jorgensen Rd.

Born in Barrie, Ontario, Doug was to meet his future wife and soul mate, Susan Kinzie, at the local skating rink when the were just a couple of tweeners looking to find their “Night Moves.” Over the course of years they chased, one after another, across the country until finally settling together in the Kootenays in 1992. In 1996 they acquired Lakewood Inn, where, on June 20, 1998, Doug finally made an honest woman of Susan. Doug loved to get out on the road with his Harley gleaming in the sun and run the routes through the Slocan and Kootenay valleys. When it got too hot in the summer, he loved to slip off alone with the boat, out to the middle of the lake and skinny dip. He seemed to be at his apex of happiness at their epic New Year’s Eve parties surrounded by his wife and friends. To share a can of Kokanee with him on the porch and looking out over the lake, the peace and serenity of his face, was an envious experience. Doug is survived by his loving wife Susan, sister Nancy Findley (Howard), brother Ross Stark (Rosemary), brother Al Stark (Beth), stepchildren Rachael Kimola, Kyle Kimola (Kara), and granddaughter Kaelynn Kimola. Please join the family at the Kaslo Legion Hall, March 2nd at 2pm, for a memorial to Doug’s life. Vio Con Dios, Amigo.

The coevolution of bees and plants Friends of the Lardeau River (FLR) is inviting adults and students to an eye-opener presentation by Gord Hutchings entitled, The Coevolution of Flowering Plants and Native Bees. Illustrated with many photographs, his talk will explore the direct interdependent relationship between BC’s flowering plants and the native bee species that pollinate them – an evolutionary process of some 120 million years beginning at the end of the Cretaceous Period. Hutchings will show us how anatomical features of bees and anatomical features of various plant groups have, through time, evolved to complement one another, each species now obliged to reward the other in exchange for survival benefits. Gord Hutchings’ infectious passion for insects knows no bounds. He has spent 20 years as a professional field biologist and his entire life as an insect collector and researcher. During earlier years he immersed himself in studying dragonflies and in recent decades has become equally fascinated with native bees. As a result, he has become widely known as a community educator on native bees, our most important pollinator of crops. His countless hours spent on insect research in diverse habitats throughout western Canada has advanced the understanding of BC insects generally and led to the donation of thousands of his valuable specimens to the Royal BC Museum. As a consultant, collector, researcher and author, he has worked with BC Ministry of Environment Conservation Data Centre, Royal BC Museum, Yukon Territory Government, Canadian Wildlife Service, Forestry Canada, universities and non-profit groups. He also operates an active website. The presentation will be at the Argenta Community Hall, Wednesday, February 20, at 7 pm. Admission by donation. FLR President, Jim Lawrence, expressed his delight with “the high calibre speakers we continue to bring in through our popular Speakers Series, now in its second year running.” Supported by funds from RDCK and Columbia Basin Trust, FLR continues to foster community understanding of and engagement with issues affecting the wellbeing of sensitive ecosystems in our area. Momo is a beautiful and adventurous 2-year-old, spayed female. She has a very assertive personality and would do best in a home without other cats. She enjoys affection and loves to play. She would do well in a household that could give her the stimulation she requires. Momo might do well with dogs, but she has not lived with them in the past. She may do well as an indoor/outdoor cat with proper supervision. For more information on Momo, contact the BC SPCA Nelson branch at 250-352-7178, or stop by the shelter to meet her!

cont’d from pg 26 and in the future, as more of the revenues are injected back into this region and to the province.” The Trust and Columbia Power, which currently own 49% of Waneta Expansion, worked closely with the BC government to make this purchase possible. “This is an incredible opportunity for the government to work in collaboration with Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust to return this valued asset to the people of the Columbia Basin,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister Responsible for the Columbia River Treaty, Columbia Basin Trust and Columbia Power Corporation. “The return on this investment will benefit the province and residents of the Columbia Basin for generations to come.” The 335-MW facility was constructed with Fortis ahead of schedule and on budget, adding a second powerhouse immediately downstream of the Waneta Dam on the Pend d’Oreille River. It shares the existing hydraulic head and generates clean, renewable, cost effective power from water that would otherwise be spilled and provides enough energy to power 60,000 homes. There will be no change to operations or to any key agreements. Long-term agreements are in place with BC Hydro to purchase the energy and with FortisBC to operate the facility and purchase surplus capacity. “This facility is an extraordinary asset that wouldn’t have been possible without Fortis coming on board as a partner in 2010 to help with its development,” added Strilaeff.
