Irene Kathleen Birkett (nee Hughes) Sept. 5, 1918 - Dec. 15, 2018

rene passed away peacefully at age 100, at the Victorian Community Health Center Long Term Care Facility. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years Garnet James and siblings Edna Beddard and Reg, Jack and Doug Hughes. Irene was born and lived in Winnipeg until she moved with her husband and family in 1959 to Oakville Ontario, which was home until her move to Kaslo in 2009. Irene is survived by children Wally Birkett and Donna Corgnati (Bart) of North Carolina and Drew Birkett (Patricia Feeney) of Kaslo BC; as well as sisters Joan, Betty and Sheila. Irene was the dearly loved grandmother of Timothy Pasch (Saori), Adam Pasch, Maeghan Sutton (Jerry), James Birkett (Katie) and Sierra, Brendan, and Robin Birkett. She was great-grandmother of Kai and Riku Pasch and Hudson and Quinn Sutton. Our mother was a gifted poet and writer and homemaker. She loved to sing and Irene and Garnet would often break into song, in harmony. She loved music and sang in the church choir and Sweet Adelines for many years. Even at advanced age Irene remembered lyrics like an encyclopedia. In Kaslo she was known for her singing and ready smile. Irene and Garnet loved to laugh and humour was always central. Cooking and baking, books, cryptic crosswords, golf and curling were her other passions. Irene also helped out with volunteer work in her later years in Oakville. We would like to thank all the staff at the Kaslo Extended Care for the wonderful care they gave Irene in the years she was there. Thanks also to all the volunteers from the area churches and general populace who shared their talents and love of music with our mother and the other residents.

In the mist, you shone a light.

Jeffrey (Jeff) Claude Johnson August 17, 1955 to December 2, 2018 It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Jeff Johnson on December 2, 2018 at his home in Kaslo. Jeff was born in Arborg, Manitoba to Jake Johnson and Margaret Anderson. His early years were spent in Riverton, where he learned to celebrate his Icelandic culture (displayed by the delicate whipping-cream-stuffed Icelandic pastry horns he shared at potlucks). Following in his grand– father Gudjon and father Jake’s footsteps he became a mechanic.

Thirty-one years ago he packed up his wife and daughter and moved to Kaslo, BC. For a number of years, he worked at construction as a ship’s mechanic in the Northwest Territories. Eventually, he built a garage on his ‘J’ Avenue property. But most of Kaslo remembers him as the mechanic at Kaslo Automotive with the quirky sense of humour.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Betsy, daughter Freyja, sister Jacquie, son-in-law Skylar (Jennifer) and stepdad Jim Bowman. We bless and thank the Kaslo First Responders for their caring attention and kindness. A celebration of life will be held on August 17 2019. Time and place to be announced.

Adeline Elizabeth Dixson It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Adeline Elizabeth Dixson (Klatt). Born in Nemiskam, Alberta to Mary and Rudolph Klatt on January 13, 1926, she was the second oldest of six children. After completing high school at a convent in Medicine Hat she became a telephone operator. Later she married Gordon Dixson and had five children, 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Together they went farming in Foremost and Claresholm Alberta, and ranching in BC. PAGE PAGE 22 22

Jan 13/ 1926 ~ July 20/2018 She was always very young at heart and devoted to her children. She was predeceased by two of her daughters, Gail Dixson and Susan Burton. Surviving children are Rhonda Remple, Greg Dixson, and Donna Dixson. Thank you to the amazing staff at the Victorian Community Health Centre in Kaslo who took care of our mother in her last years. A very special thanks to our sister Donna for her undying devotion to our mother.
