Family Literacy Day 2019 The 20th anniversary of Family Literacy Day (FLD) is January 27! In celebration of this milestone, families are encouraged to ‘Take 20’ minutes to make learning together part of their everyday activities. Download the following free resources to support your FLD activities. Click here www.abclifeliteracy.ca/fld/downloads for all English and French resources. English and French PSAs, matte stories, a social media guide and stock images are also available to be downloaded at ABC Life Literacy’s media room, www. abclifeliteracy.ca/fld/media-room Family Literacy Day® is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically and can help a parent improve their skills as well. Wayne Edward Zloty July 19,1957 January 8, 2019
Wayne passed away peacefully with his loving wife Lynda by his side, after an ongoing battle with esophogeal cancer and most recently, suffering a stroke on Christmas Eve. Wayne was a passionate man with an avid love of golf and fishing. He was always willing to lend a hand and had a profound love of all animals. Honesty and truth were hallmarks of how he lived his life. If you were fortunate to be his friend and see beneath the rough outer layer you found that he really was a giant teddy bear. This was most evident in the joy he had being a grandfather to Mackenzie, his “Monkeytoes”, and most recently with the addition of his grandson, Dawson. Wayne will be deeply missed by his wife Lynda; stepsons John and Russell; daughterin-law Holly; grandchildren, Mackenzie and Dawson; as well

Is there untapped value in your land?
We buy cedar poles as his very special Calgary family, Linda Murray (Dennis), Ashley Pederson (Tyler & Kaida), Amber Pederson (Brett, Kaydyn & Alice). Also Lynda’s entire family who Wayne was so unbelievably grateful to have been able to become a part of. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Balfour Evangelical Church on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the BCSPCA, Nelson Branch in Wayne’s memory is appreciated.

Cuddles
Cuddles is a neutered, 7-year-old male who lives up to his name! He loves affection and attention and is more than happy to relax with you on the couch. This boy is on a special diet to help him lose a bit of weight, but he is very healthy otherwise. Cuddles can be dominant with other cats and would need a slow transition period to adapt to other pets in the house. For more information on Cuddles, please contact the BC SPCA Nelson Branch at 250-352-7178, or, stop by the shelter to meet him!

Yes – Kaslo Community Cares! An idea, sparked by a conversation between Andy Shadrack and Patrick Steiner of the Kaslo Food Hub, was to hold a free community dinner at Christmas for those who were alone, seniors, low-income and strangers. This proposal, shared amongst a number of locals, was the beginning of the Kaslo Community Cares Network. Requests for funding, donations, setup crew, decorations and entertainment, along with the support from the Legion and the Legion Ladies food preparation team, was generously forthcoming. The enthusiasm and cooperation of so many people who came forward to participate in this venture made the first Kaslo Community Dinner and Celebration come to fruition on December 20 at the Kaslo Legion. JV Humphries kindergarten and grade one class created and delivered Christmas tree decorations, with the hall festively decorated by another team from the Kaslo
Senior Citizens’ Association. A buffet meal, served to over 150 people, provided a full course Christmas dinner with a wide assortment of desserts. Senior students from JV Humphries assisted with the serving and their participation in cleanup was greatly appreciated. Mrs. Claus mingled with the crowd offering mandarin oranges, candy canes and 3-D printed Christmas decorations and toys. Glen Stewart offered a prayer of Thanksgiving for all the blessings of Christmas and everyone enjoyed the musical entertainment provided by the Moon Family Band and The Celtic Kitchen Party. A few of the Victorian Hospital Care residents were transported by bus to enjoy the dinner and transportation was provided for a number of other individuals, while several meals were delivered to shut-in residents of Kaslo. Door prizes included a Spa Day Pass for two from The Sentinel and a cord of firewood from the Kaslo and District Community Forest Society. The event was a true demonstration of the spirit of Christmas shared amongst all. The evening was deemed a resounding success, based on comments from both diners and volunteers. All donations will be recognized with a personal thank you. The Kaslo Community Cares Network has been firmly established and hopes to take on some other worthwhile ventures in the future, with the approximately $600 received above the costs of the event to be donated to the Kaslo Food Hub for possibly another community meal in the spring. Help prevent the spread of illnesses Interior Health is asking the public visiting our health facilities to please do their part to keep loved ones safe from infectious illnesses this winter. Both gastrointestinal illness (GI) and respiratory infections (RI) are highly contagious and common in the community during the winter months. Children and individuals over 65 years of age are particularly vulnerable. A combination of practices will provide the best protection possible. Five ways you can help to prevent the spread of illness: 1. Don’t Visit If You Are Feeling Unwell: As hard as this is, it’s important to stay home if you are sick to prevent the spread of illness. People can remain infectious for up to five days after symptoms appear. 2. Get The Influenza (Flu) Shot: Flu season is December 3 – March 31, so there is plenty of time to benefit from immunization. See your community pharmacist, physician, public health unit, or www.immunizebc.ca for more information about receiving a flu shot. 3. Wear A Mask: Remember, all visitors are expected to wear a surgical mask during flu season if they have not been immunized against influenza. You can spread influenza before you develop symptoms. Masks are located at various locations throughout Interior Health facilities. 4. Cover Your Cough: Use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. 5. Wash Your Hands Frequently: Use soap or hand sanitizer, located at front entrances and throughout Interior Health facilities. Submitted by Interior Health

GREY DIVORCES RAISE SPECIAL PROBLEMS Divorce is never easy at any age, but couples who split up after the age of 50 face special problems. Such “grey divorces” have exploded over the last decades. Empty-nest syndrome (the kids have flown the coop), improved health and life expectancy, and the desire to re-partner with a better match help to drive this continuing trend. Spousal support – ongoing payments by one ex-spouse to the other after the marriage is over – is a particularly difficult issue. You or your partner may only have a few working years left. So financial security going forward is a special concern. After a long marriage (typical in grey divorces), the more economically disadvantaged spouse is likely entitled to financial support from her ex. But how much financial support, and for how long? And what happens if, unexpectedly, the spouse receiving support later re-partners with a higher-income earner? The BC Court of Appeal dealt with such “grey divorce” questions in a leading case. Helen married David at 17 (names changed). The couple had two children. Helen worked full-time before and parttime after the birth of their second child. She mostly looked after their two young kids and supported the family while her husband studied to become a doctor. The couple separated after 31 years of marriage and divorced two years later. Helen re-trained and worked as a bookkeeper after they split, while David continued practising medicine. With the court’s approval, David agreed to pay Helen monthly spousal support of $6,000. Several years later, David wanted to stop these $6,000 monthly payments. Helen had
re-married, and her new husband earned $175,000 a year. Both sides agreed Helen’s improved financial position after re-partnering was a material change, so the appeal court could deal with David’s request. The appeal court decided a reduction of the monthly payment to $3,000 was appropriate, but refused David’s request to stop the payments altogether. David, 63, was earning some $300,000 a year. In the meantime, he had remarried and divorced again. Helen was almost 58 and earned $45,000 a year (apart from the spousal support). The court said that the spouse more financially hurt by the marriage breakdown should be compensated for the sacrifices they made during the marriage for the family’s benefit. After the breakdown, only the other spouse continues to benefit from those sacrifices. Here, David’s ability to become a highincome earner was made possible by Helen supporting the family early on. Now, there was a big difference between David’s and Helen’s incomes, even taking her new husband’s earnings into account. So given their long marriage (and also tested against some guidelines), the reduced $3,000 monthly payment to Helen going forward was appropriate. In their new financial circumstances, that would allow both Helen and David about the same living standard they enjoyed while married, said the court. Every grey divorce situation is unique. If you and your spouse are separating after a long marriage, seek help from a family lawyer with the thorny spousal support, property division, pension splitting and other special issues that you face.

Robert (Bob) William Douglas March 6, 1937 to December 28, 2018
The family of Robert (Bob) William Douglas are sad to share that their beloved passed away on December 28, 2018. Surrounded by his loving family, Bob died of pneumonia at the extended care facility of the Victorian Community Health Centre in Kaslo, BC at the age of 81. Bob was born March 6, 1937 in Kingston Ontario to Henry Douglas and his wife Jean (Campbell). Bob grew up in Rossland BC with his three siblings: Jean (Tiger Milburn), Sandy (Ila Douglas) and Marion (Raulston) of Trail, BC. He graduated from Rossland High School in 1955, followed by Grade 13 in Trail BC. He received his degree in Education in 1960 after attending Victoria College for one year and the University of BC for three. Bob taught in Rossland for one year, followed by six years in Edgewater, BC before coming to Kaslo with his young family to teach and serve as the Vice-Principal in 1967, a post he held for 27 years. For many years Bob served on the executive of the Kootenay Lake Teachers Association and acted as the area rep to the BC Teachers Federation. Bob met his wife Barbara Rose Burk on a blind date in 1959 in Calgary, Alberta. They raised their family of four children in Kaslo: Bryan MacMillan (Liz Ross), Laura Douglas (Chris Bostwick), Cathie Douglas (Larry Moore) and David Douglas; eight grandchildren: Melanie and Nicholas MacMillan, Kevin John, Douglas and Conrad Watt, Wyatt, Cody and Cole Halleran; one great-grandchild and one great-great grandchild: Ashleigh Gagnon and her daughter Taylor. Bob is predeceased by his parents, his grandson Cole Carter Halleran (2000) and his sister Marion Woodbridge Raulston (2018). To say Bob was an active member of his community is an understatement. He gravitated to positions of leadership in every group he joined. He served in the Kinsmen

club starting in 1969 and was awarded a lifetime membership in 1980 for his contributions. The club devoted many hours to community projects – including maintenance of the Scout Hall, purchase and installation of playground equipment for the park, running May Days, and construction of the ice arena, Abbey Manor and the tennis courts. Bob served the Kaslo Historical Society and was on the Kaslo Hospital board for 20 years. He acted as a coach and a referee for Minor Hockey and coached many girls’ basketball teams. Bob was an accomplished bagpiper, playing in many bands including The Regimental Pipes and Drums of the Calgary Highlanders and the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. He played for many community events including graduations, weddings, parades and funerals. Bob was on the executive of the Kaslo Riding Club and an active member of the Curling Club. After his retirement, Bob acted as Village Councillor for two terms and served for one term as Regional District of Central Kootenay rep and Mayor for the Village of Kaslo. He and his wife enjoyed learning horsemanship and caring for their horses. They spent many hours riding in the arena and on the local trails and organizing the yearly horse show. They enjoyed camping, canoeing and having fun with friends. Bob loved spending time with his grandchildren – taking them riding, knitting them sweaters, telling them stories and basically letting them know they were well loved. By his family, colleagues and community he is fondly remembered as a humanitarian with a wonderful sense of humour. As Bob might say, “It’s time to go feed the horses”. A ceremony to celebrate Bob’s life will be held in the spring.
