Organics workshop food for thought After hosting a workshop in mid February, the RDCK is asking municipal councils and boards if they intend to participate in a proposed regional-scale composting program slated to start by 2022. “Organic waste diversion is a key component of our Resource Recovery Plan update, which will dictate our operations and capital work for the next five-plus years,” said Uli Wolf, general manager of environmental services at the RDCK. “A regional-scale composting system would provide numerous environmental and economic benefits for our entire region, and those benefits are best realized if all the municipalities are on board.” Workshop attendees were given an update on the development and cost estimates of various composting options. They were also given an overview of the benefits of organics diversion programs: they help conserve landfill space, reduce leachate and greenhouse gas emissions, and produce a useful product in the form of compost. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is actively pursuing opportunities for implementation of food waste organics composting for communities in the eastern portion of the region, including potentially partnering with the RDCK on their initiative. For more information about the RDCK’s Resource Recovery Plan Update, visit https://rdck.ca/EN/main/ services/waste-recycling/resource_recovery_plan.html, or contact the RDCK Resource Recovery Department at 250-352-8161 (1-800-268-7325) or ResourceRecovery@ rdck.bc.ca.

Understanding the Gerrard rainbow The legendary Gerrard rainbow trout, renowned for their massive size and tail walking-acrobatics are believed to originate from just one short 300-metre-long spawning stretch of the Lardeau River. Friends of the Lardeau River (FLR) is pleased to announce provincial Rivers Biologist Greg Andrusak will unravel some of the mysteries surrounding the genetically unique Gerrard rainbow trout. The Lardeau and Duncan rivers is home of the Gerrard rainbow trout. These rivers combined are the only place in the region that support the unique life history of these large piscivourous trout that reside in Kootenay Lake. Research to understand their biology has been ongoing over the past two decades and has been highlighted as a priority, given the recent collapse of Kokanee on Kootenay Lake. This research will be used to asses recovery timelines and develop conservation and management thresholds. The study area includes the Lardeau and Duncan rivers with a total lineal length (both banks) of 196.2 km. However, the majority of the study area is located in the Lardeau River which constitutes 141.6 km of river bank from the total of 196.2 km The research on the Lardeau and Duncan rivers is focused at understanding the annual juvenile abundance

since 2006. Nighttime snorkel surveys are conducted to obtain annual estimates of one-year-old abundances which were progeny of the previous year’s spring spawning event at the Gerrard spawning grounds. The information from annual estimates of recruitment are combined with the escapements at the Gerrard spawning grounds to provide a measure of population resilience to increasing threats and mortality. The research has been primarily funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation (HCTF) with additional support from Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) and Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC). The research aims to assess the mechanisms that regulate the Gerrard population across its entire life history. cont’d on pg 28

Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment? Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options. Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional performing soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

“Hosting the RBC Cup in 2021 would be a great opportunity for our community,” said Craig Clare, Director of Hockey & Business Operations for the Trail Smoke Eaters. “Right now, we are focusing on the bid document and gathering all the information that is required in order to be considered. We feel our team and community have so much to offer a tournament of this caliber, but it’s Hockey Canada’s decision as to which team and city are most suitable to host the event.” The Trail Smoke Eaters and the City of Trail have designated staff members working diligently on the bid’s contents and have retained a local graphic designer to professionally design and format the document. “There are many financial and operational requirements that must be included in the bid,” said David Perehudoff, Chief Administrative Officer. “The goal is to invest the time and resources required to compile a thorough and professional document that will hopefully result in a positive outcome for Trail. Once the bid has been submitted, we will anxiously wait for Hockey Canada’s review of the bids received, and their decision.” For more information, contact: Craig Clare, Trail Smoke Eaters Director of Hockey & Business Operations 250-231-3835 c.clare@trailsmokeeaters.com or David Perehudoff, City of Trail Chief Administrativ Officer 250-364-0805 dperehudoff@trail.ca

Since its creation in 2010, through the initiative of Sébastien Walnier (Principal Cello of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels) and Alexandre Beauvoir (chamber musician), these eight musicians never fail to share their passion for the extraordinary richness of their instrument.

On Saturday, February 23 the streets of Nelson filled up with walkers, volunteers and donors. They braved the cold slippery conditions to come out and support the vital work of Nelson CARES Society: its Ready for Home program. Teams were made up of schools, community groups, businesses, friends and families. Thank you to everyone who took part. We couldn’t do this event without countless volunteer hours, donations and generous support from the community. Thank you to the business community for supporting this event with our ‘toques around town’ program, and for the ingredients for the amazing chili. This is the second year that we partnered with the Commercial Kitchen Assistant program students at Selkirk College to make the chili and this has been a wonderful and yummy partnership. We also received numerous donations to create our gift packs for the biggest team (Wildflower School Walkers), the best fundraising team (Erica’s Avengers), and the best fundraising individual (Debbie House). Our total raised so far is $40,260. This is 115% of our $35,000 goal. Nationally we are 49 out of 133 teams. We beat out locations that are much bigger than us, locations like Winnipeg, Kelowna, and Montreal downtown! The website (cnoy.org/nelson) will remain open til March 31st to take donations to teams or individual walkers. If you want to donate by cheque please contact Stephanie Myers and she will help you with this. Let’s see how high we can get that total! “Coldest Night of the Year is an opportunity to experience a few hours of discomfort, where many in our community endure for years. Homelessness can erode our dignity individually and as a community. On Saturday we showed Canada that we are ready to support the most vulnerable in our community. We are so grateful to the community of Nelson for your amazing generosity. The funds will go directly to support our Ready for Home program that supports those who have been homeless or at risk of homelessness to keep and maintain their housing” Jenny Robinson - Executive Director of Nelson CARES Please contact the Coldest Night of the Year coordinator Stephanie Myers: cnoy@nelsoncares.ca, Cell 250.505.7410

School District concerning measles Parents and guardians concerned about the recent measles outbreak in Vancouver can be assured that the ministries of education and health are working together to mitigate the risk of the measles outbreak to our school communities. A message was issued from the ministry to all school districts in the province indicating that over the coming weeks the ministry will communicate actions that will be taken with schools across the province to reduce risk, such as updating immunization records for measles and offering catch-up immunization for students. The Kootenay Lake School District has been in contact with our local public health office and we were provided with the following details: As of March 1, there are no confirmed cases of measles in the Kootenay Boundary or Interior Health regions. Immunization - The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against measles is to get vaccinated and ensure vaccinations are up to date.

• Two doses of MMR vaccine offers the best protection against measles. MMR vaccine is highly effective and safe. • Contact your local IH public health unit if you are unsure about your immunization status or to book an appointment to be immunized. There are health units in Castlegar, Trail, Nelson, Kaslo, Nakusp and other communities. Exposure - If you feel you have been exposed to measles and have symptoms, call your doctor in advance of an appointment. • If you visit the emergency department, please put on a mask at arrival and immediately tell the triage staff that you think you may have measles so that they can take precautions. Kaslo lab moves to drop-in service Effective February 19, the outpatient lab at Victorian Community Health Centre in Kaslo began seeing patients on a first come, first served drop-in basis. Patients no longer need to book an appointment through the health centre to have their outpatient lab work done. The lab will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:30 am to noon for blood collection and from noon to 12:30 pm for Holter (heart monitoring) testing. Patients take a number when they arrive at the lab and are seen in the order they arrive. Patients are reminded to: • Bring your completed lab requisition. • Have your BC Services (Care) Card. • Follow the appropriate fasting protocol (if required). Individuals who do need to fast prior to their blood draws are advised to come at 7:30 am. • Bring samples you collected at home (stool, urine, FIT). Interior Health is making this change and increasing lab hours (lab service was traditionally offered from 8 am to 11:30 am) to improve overall access to local lab services. Protect your vehicle investment
Vehicle owners know maintaining a vehicle can be a lot of work. Taking the time to properly care for a vehicle can prolong its life expectancy and help owners avoid breakdowns and other issues along the way. Regular washing is an aspect of vehicle maintenance that some may classify as a purely cosmetic benefit. Certainly a car wash can keep the vehicle looking its best, but there are other advantages to washing as well. Washing offers preventative maintenance for the car’s paint and can help prevent rust and corrosion resulting from dirt, acid rain and road salt. Rust can compromise hydraulic brake and fuel lines, as well as many moving parts in the chassis and frame. Corrosion of electrical connectors and other parts under the hood can lead to leaks, electrical shorts and a host of additional problems. If you live in an area with a high amount of dust or industry, you may need to wash your car as frequently as once a week. Drivers who live along or near coastal areas may need to wash their vehicles frequently to combat sea salt buildup. Garage-kept vehicles may be able to go longer between washes, but in general washing a vehicle every two to three weeks is a good rule of thumb. In adcont’d on pg 35

Vehicle Investment cont’d from pg 32 dition, a good sealant will protect the paint and other trims throughout the year. The following are some other car-wash tips to follow. • Always use a proper washing soap solution. This will preserve the car’s finish better than other homemade soaps. Avoid using dishwashing liquid, which can strip protective wax coatings. • Be prompt when cleaning off bugs, sap and bird droppings that may stick to the paint and become difficult to remove over time. • Wait until a car has cooled down before washing. Heat speeds up the drying of soap and water and can make it more difficult to clean. • Always use a clean, non-abrasive sponge. Resist the urge to
move the sponge in circles as you clean. Doing so can create noticeable swirl scratch marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the body panels and hood. • Keep a separate rinsing bucket to clean the sponge or washing mitt so that dirt is not mixed into the clean, sudsy water. • Consumer Reports suggests using a soft squeegee to remove most of the water on the body of the car after washing and rinsing. Blot up any extra water with a chamois. • Wax the car every season to ensure it has maximum protection. In between, apply a liquid spray wax to touch up spots. Water beading is not an ideal indicator of whether or not the car needs a coat of wax. • Don’t forget to pay attention to the interior. Vacuum regularly to prevent ground-in dirt and routinely clean the upholstery with a product specific to your vehicle’s interior, whether that interior is leather or fabric.
