Community Futures Expands Presence In Castlegar Community Futures Central Kootenay has partnered with Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce to offer its business services – such as business counselling and loan programs – from the Chamber’s office at 1995 6 Avenue. This new partnership will give Community Futures a greater presence in Castlegar and help local entrepreneurs become aware of and access the services available to them. “We have been helping small business owners in Castlegar for close to 30 years and we want to expand our presence in the community,” said Community Futures, Executive Director Andrea Wilkey. “When business owners are facing new opportunities or challenges, we want to be there for them.” Community Futures Central Kootenay is a non-profit organization that helps businesses be successful through delivering a variety of business support services, including a business loan program, free business counselling, skills training workshops, the Self Employment Program (in partnership with Kootenay Career Development Society) as well as being the delivery partner for Columbia Basin Trust’s Basin Business Advisors Program. Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tammy Verigin-Burk is pleased to have a Community Futures presence in the Chamber building. “Our services complement each other well,” Verigin-Burk said. “The Chamber is a business advocate, working to improve the local business environment and Castlegar as a whole; while

Community Futures works directly with individual entrepreneurs to help them launch and expand their business.” Community Futures business counsellors offer free one-on-one appointments for the general public every Wednesday afternoon at the Castlegar & District Chamber. To book an appointment to meet with Community Futures staff at the Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce office, call 250-352-1933, ext. 100. Raftex 2015 A Great Success! The second annual RAFTEX is again a great success, with 27 registered participants from nine SAR teams around the province. These members of regional swiftwater teams have come together to improve their skills and bond as a technical rescue group in one of the most dangerous rescue environments that volunteers face in organized rescue. Nelson SAR

has hosted a great training weekend. Many in the valley would have seen the flotilla of colorful rafts this past weekend as participants spent three days learning raft operations on many different types of rafts and cat-a-rafts. This included industry standard dryland training in pre-trip safety talks, flip drills, equipment rescue, rigging of equipment, guide throwbag standards and rafting quadrant theory. Participants received instruction in raft guiding techniques to prepare them for their BC Raft Outfitters Association Guides Licence. The BCROA SAR specific guide licence is a new initiative from the BCSARA and BCROA to improve safety on the rivers with SAR teams. Under the direction of a BCROA trip leader, participants were able to log many hours to prepare for the SAR Guides exams. On the Monday morning five members from the West Kootenay and South Okanagan Regional Swiftwater Teams became the first successful SAR members to pass the new BCROA SAR Guides exams in the Province and Canada. After participating in the Know Your Watershed Program, Mrs. Marrandino’s motivated Grade seven class at Salmo Secondary School decided to put on a special water festival for a class of grade four/five students at Salmo Elementary. Know Your Watershed, a program of the Columbia Basin Trust delivered by Wildsight, taught the grade sevens about where their water comes from, how it’s treated and what happens to it when it goes down the drain. They chose to put on the water festival as the Student Action Project component of the program and built a watershed model from a base given to them by the Salmo Streamkeepers group. Together with other water-focused art projects and games, this working model provided an amazing opportunity to teach the younger students about non-point pollution sources. The watershed model and art projects created by the students will be on display at the Salmo Library until the end of May. Submitted by Lindsay Cuff

Open Fires To Be Restricted In Southeast Fire Centre Effective now, Category Two and Category Three open fires will be prohibited in the Southeast Fire Centre to help prevent human caused wildfires and protect public safety. This prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. The Southeast Fire Centre covers the area extending from the US border in the south to Mica Dam in the

north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Monashee Mountains in the west to the BC Alberta border in the east. It includes the Selkirk Natural Resource District and the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District. A map of the affected area is available online at: http://tinyurl.com/ly73mh7 Specifically, prohibited activities include: • the burning of any waste, slash or other materials • stubble or grass fires of any size over any area • the use of fireworks, sky lanterns or burning barrels or cages of any size or description • the use of binary exploding targets (e.g., for rifle target practice) • the use of air curtain burners (forced air burning systems) The Southeast Fire Centre is experiencing drier than normal conditions and an elevated fire hazard. These prohibitions are being put in place due to current weather conditions and the long range forecast. This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half metre high by a half metre wide or smaller, and it does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is served by a fire department. Please check with local authorities regarding any other restrictions before lighting any fire. Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call *5555 on a cellphone or 1-800-663-5555 toll-free. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, go to: http://www.bcwildfire.ca Submitted by Southeast Fire Centre

Would Your Acreage Benefit From Soil Amendment? Zellstoff Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using Biosolids as soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options. Zellstoff Celgar will cover the costs of the consultant to perform soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of the fresh Biosolids based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating the Biosolids into their soil.

Sound Expressions: The Art Of Making Music The Langham Community Gallery in Kaslo presents Sound Expressions: The Art Of Making Music, Friday, June 5 through Sunday, July 19. This exhibition is a collaboration of musical instrument makers who share a passion for creating music and building some of the instruments they play. The Players: Jeremy Behn is a trained luthier, musician, marimba maker, and visual artist who owns The Mountain Fruit Folklore Centre music shop in Kaslo and has lived in Kaslo for 12 years. David Biggar has lived in Kaslo for 40+ years, and is a craftsman, carpenter, musician, guitar builder and a guitar nut. Some have called him a quiet genius. Eric Blanche is a carpenter, percussionist, and drum maker who has lived in Kaslo in the early ’80s and since 2000. He has played music for 47 years and been a part of several Kaslo bands over the years, and loves to play anything that makes a musical tone. The exhibition will involve approximately two dozen instruments and stand alone pieces and the opening night event, on Friday, June 5, from 7 to 9pm, promises to be an entertaining and audible experience!!! Come on out and listen to the music, strum a tune or two, or just soak up the brilliant talent we have living amongst us.

of consumers are changing, online and mobile channel usage is rising and the number of in-branch transactions is declining, it has become increasingly difficult to justify two branches in close proximity to one another in the Greater Trail area. The last day of operation for Warfield branch is scheduled for Friday, July 3. At that time, the branch will transition to offering ATM and night deposit services only. All Warfield Members will receive notification by mail. The Trail branch, located in downtown Trail, operates six days a week, and offers full advisory services including personal and commercial banking, wealth management and legal services. Access to home, auto and travel insurance services is also conveniently located nearby. Submitted by Nancy Crockett

Nelson Reconciliation Walk What does it mean to be reconciled? How can the wounds suffered in Canada’s residential schools be healed? Aboriginal people today still don’t have access to clean water, healthy food or decent housing. What is our collective responsibility in the context of colonization? One result of Canada’s 2008 Statement of Apology to First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples was the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). For six years, the TRC had as its mandate to learn the truth about what happened in the residential schools. On May 31 the TRC will present its final report in Ottawa. To mark this historic event and to work towards a new relationship with Aboriginal peoples, KAIROS is planning a Reconciliation Walk in Nelson at 12 noon on Friday, May 29 from City Hall to Lakeside Park. Participants of all ages are invited to bring banners, to listen and to take action towards a possible new relationship between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples. KAIROS is an ecumenical group working for peace, environmental

Transitional Training Students Selkirk College Transitional Training students from across the region put together an inspirational three-day conference earlier this month that showcased the talents of differently-abled adults. Called Branching Out, the conference featured 19 different presenters and 18 workshops between May 12 and 14 at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus. More than 120 participants took part in the conference that was geared towards practitioners, instructors and families of adults with diverse skills. The conference was opened by Nelson-based student Natasha Bidinoff-Gardiner, who set the tone for the three days with her touching words. “We didn’t ask to be born with a disability or to be physically injured or physically abused, but it happened,” Bidinoff-Gardiner told the audience gathered at Mary Hall. “We are judged and mocked. But instead of focusing on picking on each other’s weaknesses, why not learn to work together, accept each other and collaborate to make life beautiful.” The conference featured workshops in massage, communication, fire safety, self defence, entrepreneurship, dealing with stress, yoga, cooking and more. There was a gala banquet at Nelson’s Mary Hall, a dance and plenty of opportunities for social engagement. “The entire event was inspirational for all because it was so positive,” said Allison Alder, the Chair of the Selkirk College School of Academic Upgrading & Development. “It will have a lasting impact in the community as the event’s inclusivity and the students’ capacity continues to ripple outward. Everyone had shivers and tears hearing first hand what it’s like to live with a disability in our society. Many new bonds were forged and ideas hatched.” Selkirk College offers Transitional Training classes in Nelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks and Trail. The classes enable adults with barriers or disabilities learn to participate more fully in daily life within their communities, including preparing for paid or unpaid work. With a mission to nurture interdependence and independence through meaningful learning, the program builds upon unique personal strengths, confidence, awareness and skills. For more information please contact Allison Alder, Academic Upgrading & Development School Chair, 250-354-3214.

Holiday

Holiday is a nine-year-old male domestic short-hair with a lovely black and white coat. He came to us at the BC SPCA Nelson Branch in February after his living arrangements changed and he was unable to stay with his owner. Holiday is a very special kitty. He is an affectionate and friendly guy who loves a good body rub. He will happily plant himself on your lap for a nice cuddle and a chat. He likes chasing toys, despite his slightly arthritic back hips, and is surprisingly quick on his feet! As he has recently been diagnosed with diabetes he needs a bit of extra care, including insulin injections and a specific diet. Holiday is quite happy around dogs and other cats. He’s used to a mellow house and would probably prefer a quiet home to retire in with someone who can commit to caring for a diabetic cat and give him lots of love! If you are interested in meeting Holiday, please call 250-352-7178 for more information.

Balfour & Kaslo Transfer Stations To Be Upgraded Upgrades to the RDCK’s Balfour and Kaslo waste transfer stations will soon commence as the RDCK awarded the contract to McNally Excavating of Nelson. Construction was scheduled to begin in May but the RDCK rejected all of the original tenders for being over the approved project budget. The RDCK worked with the engineering team to revise the project scope, reduce costs and retender the project, which has been planned since 2010. The total contract value for the tendered works is $963,832. Construction is anticipated to occur from June 15 to October 2. “The RDCK has worked closely with engineers and contractors to create an action plan to minimize any inconvenience for residents” says Tom Newell, chair of the Central Subregion Resource Recovery Committee. Both the Kaslo and Balfour sites will be closed during construction, however, only one site will be closed at any given time. The anticipated closure dates are as follows: • Kaslo Transfer Station: June 15 to July 28 • Balfour Transfer Station: August 1 to October 2 To minimize disruption to the public during the site closures the RDCK will take the following actions: • Small loads of residential bagged mixed waste ONLY will be received at the sites, one day per week at Kaslo and two days per week at Balfour. Kaslo: Tuesday, 10 am to 3 pm Balfour: Wednesday and Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm • A contractor will receive bagged mixed waste at $2.50 per bag outside the transfer station during the posted hours. Larger loads, scrap metal and wood waste will not be received. • There will be extended hours at Balfour during the Kaslo closure (during construction at the Kaslo transfer station), the Balfour transfer station will open on Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm in addition to the regular Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday hours from 10 am to 4 pm. The Grohman Narrows Transfer Station is open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Saturday. • Recycling bins will still be available in Kaslo, the recycling bins will remain at the Village works yard. In Balfour the recycling bins will be moved outside of the construction zone to a safe, accessible area. We apologize for any inconvenience these construction closures might cause, and appreciate your cooperation and patience in managing your waste responsibly during this time. If you have any questions please contact the RDCK at 250-352-6665 or check out our website at www.rdck.bc.ca For further info, please contact Uli Wolf, General Manager of Environmental Services at 250-352-8163. Mozart’s Magical Journey Audiences of all ages will be sure to enjoy this year’s Homelinks production of Mozart’s Magical Journey, with the inclusion of over 20 excerpts of the master’s music, including themes from Mozart’s operas The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute, and some of his most enduring and memorable works such as Ave Verum, Symphony No. 1, Clarinet Quintet, and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The music is magically woven into the drama as the young Homelinks actors, aged five to fifteen, recreate historical events from the composer’s life. Mozart’s young son, Karl, feels isolated at boarding school and burdened by being the son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Wolfgang is experiencing his own pressures from fame and his son’s school antics. But when three children from Wolfgang’s opera show up in Karl’s boarding school room one night, they embark on an adventure through time and understanding as they all discover Wolfgang’s incredible musical talent and passion for composing. Watch this adaptation of the story from the popular Classical Kids Audiobooks come to life, as this community of homeschoolers relive young Wolfgang’s meeting of the Queen of England, are confronted by police officers in Rome, visit Karl’s own mother on her wedding day, and speak with the one and only Ludwig van Beethoven. You can catch a performance of this one act, one hour show directed by Allison Girvan and Miriam Mason Martineau on Wednesday, June 3 or Thursday June 4 at 4 pm at the Covenant Church, 702 Stanley Street, Nelson. Admission is by donation. Submitted by David M. Aaron

West Arm Water Quality Monitoring Program Begins! We are pleased to announce that next week we are starting the third and final year of a three year water quality monitoring program. The study will provide important baseline data for one of the highest populated portions of the lake, encouraging a broader and deeper understanding of the lake’s ecosystem. In the first two years we captured 10,200 data points and provided one on one training with over 50 volunteers. Our plan is to monitor by boat 12 times between May and October, for the following parameters: chlorophyll a, turbidity, total phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate and nitrite, ammonia, fecal coliform, E coli, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, organic nitrogen, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and water clarity. We are also teaming up with the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee to monitor for zebra and quagga mussels. These aquatic invasive species are posing a threat to many of our freshwater systems in BC including Kootenay Lake. Want to get involved with our program? Come join us on the boat to try your hand at water quality monitoring! Check friendsofkootenaylake.ca for water monitoring dates. For further information please contact Claire de la Salle –Program Manager email: info@friendsofkootenaylake.ca Phone 250-777-2955. Submitted by Claire de la Sall

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS! • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would you want to know about an item you were interested in buying? • Include the brand name (manufacturers spend millions promoting the name and enhancing the image of their products, so take advantage of it). Would you rather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire? • List the item’s best features and what makes your item different from others in the same category. (Remember, the more you tell, the clearer picture a potential buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.) • Take time to research pricing for your article so that you price it reasonably (overpriced items may not receive calls). • Include your phone number and the best times to call.
