Scam targets BC Hydro customers

BC Hydro is warning customers about a new twist on a scam seeking to trick them into providing their private banking information. BC Hydro has received dozens of reports of new scam emails that ‘spoof ’ a BC Hydro email address, sending messages that appear to be from BC Hydro, but are not. The scale of this attempt is unprecedented as it is known that thousands of emails are being sent out to addresses across the country. In these messages, customers are directed to click a link to access their account refund by submitting their banking information. This is a scam. Customers should be wary of any messages that seem suspicious or unexpected, including an unexpected email that references account or billing status that seems to be incorrect. To avoid falling victim to this scam, BC Hydro wants its customers to know: • It Does Not Offer Refunds Or Credits Through Interac E-Transfer. • It Does Not Collect Credit Card Or Bank Account Information By Email. • If A Customer Doubts The Authenticity Of An Email, They Should Call Bc Hydro Immediately At 1-800-Bchydro Or Check Their Account On Myhydro. Customers are encouraged to report suspected fraud to their local police department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. – BC Hydro Info Bulletin

Author Joy Kogawa speaks on forgiveness

Famed Canadian novelist and memoirist Joy Kogawa will give a series of talks on the theme of forgiveness in Nelson, Kaslo, New Denver and Silverton, June 7 to 10. Kogawa is the author of the 1981 Canadian classic novel Obasan, based on the author’s internment at Slocan, BC during World War II. Kogawa is a member of the Order of Canada and Order of British Columbia. In 2010 she received the Japanese government’s Order of the Rising Sun for her contribution to preserving Japanese-Canadian history. This year Kogawa is the headliner at the annual Convergence Writers’ Weekend in Silverton. She will speak on the theme of ‘Writing Toward Forgiveness’ on Friday, June 7 at the Silverton Gallery, Highway 6 and 4th Street. Kogawa’s three other talks are on the theme of ‘The Journey Toward Forgiveness’. She will speak on Saturday, June 8 at the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre, 306 Josephine Street, New Denver. Then on Sunday, June 9, Kogawa will speak at the Nelson United Church, 602 Silica Street and on Monday, June 10, she will talk at Langham in Kaslo 447 A Avenue, Highway 31. The focus of Kogawa’s West Kootenay talks will be her most recent book, the 2016 memoir Gently to Nagasaki. The Vancouver Sun’s Douglas Todd called the book “a mature work of history and spirituality, bravely detailing

…the intersection between mass global evils and those perpetrated intimately by members of one’s own family. “Kogawa’s memoir deeply explores how denial works in regards to racism, paedophilia, nuclear power, Canadian internment camps and Japanese war atrocities,” Todd said. The Toronto Globe and Mail praised Gently to Nagasaki for “breaking the us/them dichotomy of victimization.” More information on these events, including how to register for the Convergence Writers’ Weekend in Silverton, is at www.widespot.ca/convergence-writers-weekend – Tom Wayman

Here’s how it works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

TU You And The LAw®

law office

are you a common-law spouse?

Our family law says a couple who have lived together in a marriage-like relationship for at least two years are “spouses” – even if they’re not formally married. Generally this means that common-law couples are treated the same as married folks if they break up, for example, when it comes to child and spousal support or division of family property. But what is meant by a “marriage-like relationship”? It’s essential to prove this somewhat vague concept – that yours was a “marriage-like relationship” – for you to be treated as a common-law spouse. A recent case (under our wills law) considered whether Michael and Sandra (names changed) had a “marriage-like relationship.” Sandra, a former criminal lawyer, died at the age of 65. Her will wasn’t found, though the court concluded she’d probably made one leaving the bulk of her estate to Michael, her close and loving companion of over 20 years. Michael and Sandra had started their sexual relationship in 1993 when Michael was still married. They had carried on their relationship after Michael separated from his wife (later getting divorced) – right up to the time Sandra died in 2015. They travelled together over the years, told everyone they were husband and wife, and were regarded as a loving couple by their friends. When Sandra fell ill, Michael cared for her to the end. Michael asked the court to declare he was Sandra’s common-law spouse, since Sandra and he had never actually married.

Sandra had died childless, without a will. Her parents and sister had died before her. In these circumstances, Sandra’s estate would go to her “spouse”; otherwise, to her next-of-kin. So Michael had to prove he was her common-law spouse. Sandra’s five half-siblings whom she didn’t know – her dad’s offspring from a later marriage – would get her estate if Sandra had no “spouse.” They argued Michael and Sandra had really just carried on a long-standing affair. But the court disagreed, and decided Michael and Sandra had indeed been in a marriage-like relationship. Many factors come into play when deciding whether a particular relationship is “marriage-like,” said the court. No single factor alone is decisive; it’s not as simple as ticking off the boxes on some shopping list. The fact Michael and Sandra never lived under the same roof and kept their finances separate might suggest their relationship was something less than marriage-like. But the overall picture here was overwhelmingly in favour of declaring theirs a marriage-like relationship. Sandra, better off financially than Michael, had made Michael the beneficiary of her valuable RRSP years earlier already. She’d also given him online access to her money. And it turned out Michael didn’t move in and live with Sandra after he separated from his wife because Sandra had developed a hoarding illness. If you’re in a long-term relationship but aren’t married, there are many important things your family lawyer can help you with. Consult her for advice if you need help.

Step back in time

The public is invited to step back in time when the Slocan Valley Historical Society (SVHS) unveils its long-awaited History Walk and website on Saturday, May 25 at 12 pm at the Slocan Village Office. The project aims to tell some of the story of the settlers and citizens that have shaped the community since the late 1800s. The narrative is depicted on nine kiosks located around town, which display photos and text. Themes and events such as First Nations, the mining industry, the Japanese Canadian internment and early entrepreneurs are featured. “This is Slocan’s story as we know it. This tour is about the beginnings of our community and the significant developments along the way,” says Joyce Johnson, president of the SVHS. “It is about the people who built and re-built the community. It’s about resilience and determination. This is a tour of what can no longer be seen but is the story of the Village of Slocan. “In many ways, this was a community effort. We hope this project will educate, inform and entertain residents and visitors now and far into the future,” says Johnson. Illustrated guidebooks can be purchased for $5 or downloaded for free from the SVHS website at www. slocanvalleyhistory.ca – Slocan Valley Historical Society

Time to talk ticks

tick straight out without squeezing it. After it is removed, clean the area with soap and water. If the tick is alive (live ticks can be tested for Lyme disease), you can save it in a sealed container with a cotton ball soaked in water. Record the date of the bite on the container. If you have concerns or need assistance removing a tick, please contact your doctor or visit a walk-in medical clinic. Although most tick bites are harmless, it is important to watch for signs of illness and see a doctor as soon as possible if you notice a bull’s eye rash or other symptoms. If you saved the tick, bring it with you to your medical appointment. Fortunately, a number of precautions can be taken to prevent tick bites and tick-related illnesses. For example, you should: • Walk on cleared trails when in tall grass or wooded areas. • Cover up by wearing a hat, long sleeves, and pants. • Wear light-coloured clothing to help spot ticks easily. • Tuck pant legs into socks or boots.

Spring has arrived and people across the Interior Health region are spending more time outdoors. This can mean an increase in tick bites. Ticks are small bugs, about the size of a sesame seed, which feed on the blood of humans and animals and, sometimes, transmit diseases. Ticks are prevalent throughout the Interior and are typically found in tall grass and wooded areas. They are easiest to spot on a person or pet when they are actually sucking blood. Ticks burrow part way into the skin, bite, draw blood and then drop off. The feeding tick’s mouth will be under the skin, but the back parts will be sticking out. When they are full of blood they are usually blue-grey in colour. This is called an engorged tick. Tick species and symptoms: General symptoms of tick-borne infections include fever, headache, muscle pain and rash. The species of ticks most commonly found through Interior Health are wood ticks (Dermacentor andersoni). These ticks do not carry the Lyme disease bacteria; however, they can carry other diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ixodes ticks (Ixodes pacificus or Ixodes angustus) are the species that transmit Lyme disease. They are more common throughout coastal BC but may be present in some Interior Health areas. Check clothing and scalp (covered or not) when leaving an area where ticks may live. Ask someone to help check hard-to-reach areas. • Have a shower after returning from areas where ticks may live. • Regularly check household pets for ticks. To help keep ticks away from your home and yard, you can: • Keep your lawn short and remove any fallen leaves and weeds. • Keep a buffer area such as woodchip or gravel border between your lawn and wooded areas or stone walls. Any play equipment or play zones should be kept away from wooded areas. • Trim tree branches to allow more sunlight in your yard. • Keep wood piles and bird feeders away from the house. • Widen and maintain trails on your property. Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment? Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options. Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional performing soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment facility.
