This Remembrance Day ceremony in Nelson saw the highest turnout of community members in many years. Was it the ads about it being the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice? Was it the various wars going on around the world? Was it because it was a Sunday? Whatever the reason, it was heartwarming to see so many people take time out of their busy lives to attend the cenotaph. It was so nice to have our Senior WWII Veteran Lionel Binette recite ‘In Flanders Field’ again in his booming voice. Lionel will be celebrating his 99th birthday on November 24 at the Legion. These celebrations happen all over Canada and other Commonwealth Countries throughout the world every November 11. Communities in Canada, fortunate enough to still have a Legion, benefit from the volunteers who organize this each year. Other communities rely on their local government or other volunteers to help. We hear positive comments every year from people who come to the Legion after the ceremony to enjoy the food and cheer offered. The Nelson Legion takes on the responsibility for this event for our area. ...continued on page 21

All monies collected from the wreaths and the poppy campaign are only used for veteran’s programs under very strict guidelines.
