Brilliant Suspension Bridge Closure Canadian Pacific has been working with the RDCK to permit the removal of metal-impacted soils within the RDCK’s lands near the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge and Observation Deck. The impacted soils were identified in this area and appear to be residual from a historic derailment that occurred nearby in the mid-1970s. The soils have been tested and are non-hazardous. They will be excavated and removed to the local RDCK landfill. The work is being carried out by an experienced environmental remedial contractor, Quantum Remediation, and supervised by local Nelson staff from the environmental consultant SNC-Lavalin Environment & Water. The work is expected to occur within a three-week period starting the end of April 2015. Beginning Monday, April 27 during active construction, access to the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge, the nearby Brilliant Road, and the Observation Deck will be closed. Access to the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge and a portion of the Brilliant Road will be reopened outside of regular construction hours. eed growth in a garden can not only prove unsightly, but is also ultimately harmful to plants and vegetables. Waldo Waldo is a 1-year-old male domestic short hair with an orange tabby coat. He came to us after his original owner couldn’t keep him due to the other resident cat fighting with him. Waldo then became a neighbourhood cat. He was well cared for by a number of people but is in need of a more steady home. Waldo is full of life, playful and loves to explore his surroundings. He will be the first on the scene to inspect what you are doing and likes to perch up high to get a good view of his environment. He also likes being petted and getting some quality cuddle time. Waldo is okay with other cats and likes playing with dogs, so long as they are nice to him! Now making inroads in the music industry with their excellent musicianship and songwriting, Campbell + Green dig deep into their life experience to share strong stories, a zest for life, and marital humour in both their songwriting and performances. Their new album, When One Door Closes, is a result of making significant life changes, having moved across the country from Maple Ridge, BC to Dartmouth, NS three years ago to find their musical and artistic voices. “It wasn’t easy,” remarks Green. “We literally started over, choosing to follow our passion for music. We gave up a lot to do this.” Campbell, now approaching his 60th year, muses on the subject: “Time turns precious when one turns 50. You begin to rethink why you’re doing what you’re doing and if that’s really what you want from life.” Having decided there’s no time like the present, they took the leap. With the help of funding through a successful Kickstarter Campaign and a small FACTOR demo grant for one of the new tunes on this, their third album, Campbell + Green have pulled out all the stops with the invaluable help of producer Jamie Robinson, and have created, without a doubt, their best work to date. A contemporary folk/pop style from ballad to upbeat with a touch of blues, country and light rock, their songs range from happy to powerful to poignant. Transgender performer Rae Spoon will be playing an intimate show at Expressions Café, 554 Ward Street, Nelson on Tuesday, May 19. Rae is a songwriter, film score composer, music producer, multi-instrumentalist and published author. They will be playing a solo set of music off of their past five albums spanning genres from folk to electronic and indie rock. Rae has toured extensively in Canada, the USA, Europe and Australia. They have been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in both 2009 and 2014, as well as for the CBC Radio 3 Bucky Awards. They won the Galaxy Rising Star Award in 2004. Rae is the subject of the National Film Board musicaldocumentary My Prairie Home, with their 2013 album of the same name serving as the score and soundtrack to the film. Directed by Chelsea McMullan, this documentary about growing up and surviving in an evangelical Christian family premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival and was released theatrically in Canada in 2014. The film was an official selection for Sundance 2014, won Best Documentary from the Vancouver Critics Circle and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Feature Documentary. New Resource For Sport And Physical Activity In The Region People engaged in sport and physical activity in the Columbia Basin can look forward to improved support through the newly formed PacificSport Columbia Basin Society. Columbia Basin Trust and ViaSport are providing $800,000 and $300,000 respectively toward this initiative over the next three years. The society’s primary goals are to promote sport and physical activity in the Basin; provide services and programs for local athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers; and promote health by encouraging and helping the public to participate in physical activities. “The Trust PAGE 54

has been working on this since May 2013 to determine how we can best support sport and physical activity in the Basin,” said Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust President and CEO. “We’re pleased to partner with ViaSport to establish the PacificSport Columbia Basin Society. Jack Cyril LaRocque June 27, 1930 ~ April 20, 2015 Born June 27, 1930, Saskatoon SK ~ died April 20, 2015, Trail, BC. Papa spent a happy childhood on the prairies. His parents Clara (nee Hemmerling) and John (Jack) LaRocque moved the family from Cavel, to Landis, Bents, and Arlee SK, before moving to Trail, BC when Jack was a teen.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
At age 17, Jack met his future wife, Stella Brown. Jack and Stella were married July 21, 1952. They lived in Trail, moving to Fruitvale, then to Blue Bird Corner in 1959. Their new home provided ample room for their growing family. Dad lovingly developed the property, and met the challenges presented by flooding, deer, beavers, and stately poplars. The entire family appreciated the creekside neighbourhood. A few years ago, when the upkeep of their well loved property became too much, our parents relocated to Trail. Papa dearly missed the privacy of their former home. Dad loved outdoor activities and was involved in the development of the Beaver Valley ski hill, where we all learned to ski. He excelled at woodworking, crafting wooden skis, shelves, and fine carvings. Dad was a director of the Credit Union, member of Knights of Columbus, the Beaver Valley Historical Society, and Fruitvale’s 50 year celebration committee. He was so proud when he qualified for his Ham Radio Voice licence. In 2003, Jack and Stella were recognized as Beaver Valley Citizens of the year .

Dad was a lifelong Scouter. He was honoured with the Medal of Merit from the National Commissioner in 1998 and received his 45 year service pin in 2000. Papa loved family gatherings with guitar singalongs, the annual summer holidays at Radium or Kelowna. Photography was one of Dad’s passions, both professionally and personally. He was hired by Cominco following graduation, starting in the smelter, prior to becoming their official photographer for the remainder of his career until his retirement in 1985. Dad’s experiences while working for Cominco gave him great pride and satisfaction. He regaled us with tales of hanging from helicopters, an Arctic excursion, photographing royalty, traveling to the Ozarks, documenting retirements, and new mine operations. Pennywise
He is survived by his wife Stella C. LaRocque (nee Brown); children Jack (Elaine), Anne (Wally) Saigeon, Teresa LaRocque-Walker, Judy (Jim) Urquhart, Rod (Janet), and Gene; grandchildren Emelia, Caroline, Kate, Aaron, Pat, Rob, Zachary, Rory, Breanna, Tristan, Luke, Daniel Dave, Heather, Stephanie; 19 great-grandchildren; sister Doreen (Bill) DiPasquale, their children Bill, Carol, Dennis, Lisa; Aunt Gladys, nieces, nephews and cousins. An interment service was held April 23rd at the Rossland Cemetery. A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held in July, date TBA. In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to make a contribution to Scouts Canada at 664 West Broadway, Vancouver BC, V5Z 1G1 (for Camp Tweedsmuir operations) or the Kootenay Boundary Hospital Foundation. The family appreciates the supportive care Papa received from Dr. E. Dalla Lana, staff at the Beaver Valley Clinic, Home Care nursing and Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital. Our thanks to friends and family for their kind words and support during this difficult time.
