Tim Borsos
led an eclectic, interesting, unconventional life. He was born in Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) in 1954 and immigrated with his family to Rossland, BC in 1958. Growing up he lived in the Kootenays, the Okanagan, the Fraser Valley and, after finishing high school in Maple Ridge, eventually moved back to the Kootenays where he attended the Kootenay School of the Arts . Trained in graphic design, he was hired on as the first full time employee at the Pennywise paper in Kaslo, and designed the Pennywise logo that is still used to this day. He acquired his ultralight licence, had a passion and skill for photography and was also a potter. In his last years he became a tile setter, at times using his own tiles that he had created, for the jobs. He owned and lovingly repaired a list of vehicles including his cherry red T-bird, Fiats, and his last, a VW. He was a carpenter and spent a number of years in Powell River, building and renovating homes. He had a sweet tooth, and could devour cookies, liquorice  and anything else containing sugar, endlessly. He loved words, books, flying, long distance road trips with his camera, philosophizing, birds, cats, and romantic notions. A dreamer to the end, he refused to believe that he would leave this life so quickly, and during his final days he lived life on his own terms in his home in Keremeos, BC. On July 3, 2015 he left us for greater adventures elsewhere. Predeceased by his parents Bob and Mary Borsos, and brother Phillip Borsos. Staying behind to remember him dearly include: Jeremy and Sus Borsos (brother and sister-in-law);  Beret, Angus and Silas Borsos, (sister-in-law and nephews); Deb Borsos and Rik Valentine (sister and brother-inlaw); a group of loyal, supportive friends, and his beloved long time feline pal, Vincent BlueEyes. Donations in Tim’s memory can be sent to the North Kootenay Lake Hospice Society, Box 801, Kaslo, BC VOG 1M0.

Photographer Douglas Noblet spotted the elk last summer in Jasper Park. He was lying down, massive head arced gracefully, antlers illuminated in early morning sun. A few days later, in the nearby Tonquin Valley, he caught the setting sun on Thunderbolt Peak. These are two of the stunning images by Noblet that are on display at the Nelson Public Library until the end of August. Noblet was born in France and moved to Canada as a child, eventually settling in Nelson. Home schooled in his youth, he had the freedom to explore the wilderness and develop a range of skills including back country skiing, mountaineering, and both powered and non-powered paragliding. He got his fixed wing pilot’s licence at the age of 18 and combined this with his other great love, which is photography. He’s willing to go the extra mile for the perfect shot. Describing the photograph Valhallas Sunrise, he says: “It’s 4:50 am, and the alarm goes off. I can’t see the stars, which is not a good sign, but in the darkness I still get the little airplane ready. We take off and fly towards the opening in the clouds. As we poke through, a beautiful clear sky reveals itself. We head west towards Valhalla Park. Just as we arrive over the Mulvey Basin, the sun finally pokes over the horizon, illuminating the landscape in a bright, pinkish glow. It is stunning, and the air is completely calm. It only lasts a few minutes, but all our efforts are worth it just for this moment.” Noblet works as a professional ski patroller and volunteer search and rescue team member in addition to his ongoing quest for the next stunning image. The City of Nelson is asking residents to restrict their water use even more due to the continuing hot, dry summer. Residents have used 35% more water this year than last year at this time. So far, the summer of 2015 is recording the highest level of water use in recent years.

Transitions For Men
The Transitions for Men program, first developed in Nelson in 2013, will be offering a free group in Castlegar for the first time, beginning on July 20th. The group provides support and tools for men who are seeking fulfilling employment by addressing some of the challenges of living with trauma. In the context of the Transitions program, trauma can include a wide range of experiences, including: physical injuries, mental health challenges, childhood abuse (physical, psychological, or emotional), relationship abuse (physical, psychological, or emotional), poverty, brain injuries, extenuated experiences of grief or loss, experiences in armed combat, or addiction. “Men in our society are often told that to experience trauma is to be weak,” says Samuel Stevenson, one of the program facilitators. “This simply isn’t true. To experience trauma is to be human. And to turn to face it with kindness is a sign of strength.” Stevenson, along with co-facilitator Jesse Evans from CDCSS, offers modern therapeutic and educational models that help reinforce emotional, behavioural and mental wellbeing. Guest mentors are also brought in from the community to contribute. Past mentors have included Aboriginal elders, local employment specialists, art therapists, and health practitioners. Transitions for Men runs from July 20 to August 14 from 9 am to 1pm, Monday to Friday and includes lunch.
