Dancer And Choreographer Shannon Cooney At Oxygen Art Centre
Kokanee Fry Find A New Home
On May 21 97,000 kokanee fry were introduced into Crawford Creek (92,000) and Hendricks Creek (5,000). Approximately 65 people showed up to help bucket the two inch landlocked sockeye salmon into their new home in the creeks, then down into Kootenay Lake. Crawford Bay students and teachers took some time away from the classroom to learn how the process of stocking lakes and rivers works. The young fry made their way over from the Bull River hatchery east of Cranbrook in a large tank truck with four technicians from Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. Once in the main lake they will spend the next three to four years there, before returning to the creeks to start the cycle over. Many will find their fate at the mouths of our famous Gerrard rainbows and bull trout, but these Kokanee are what the lake is short of these days to the point of there is a no bag take on Kokanee, imposed this year in order to help increase the population.
The Oxygen Art Centre will open their summer season with the arrival of multi-talented international dancer and choreographer Shannon Cooney. Energetically titled Dynamic Expansion, Cooney’s presence at the centre and around town will be invigorating as Cooney brings with her a progressive pulse of the contemporary dance world from Berlin, Germany where Cooney is currently living. While in residency for the month of June, Shannon Cooney will be working on the creation of a solo dance installation. Her intention is to use her residency to explore a new process, one that emphasizes the inclusion of everyday interactions and responses of the residency environment to effect the creation of a new dance. This could include the involvement of other people, spaces, sounds and objects. Throughout the month Cooney will be offering several ways to meet her and get involved in her dance process and project. She emphasizes that no experience is necessary to participate in the workshops. The events being offered include an artist talk on June 4 at 7 pm at Oxygen, a dance workshop at the Moving Centre on June 6 and 7, a performance at the June 15 Nelson City Council meeting, and an art event on June 29 to end the residency. The duo consists of Jason Foy, a lifelong musician whose artistry on flute and whistles anchors this duo; and Barbara Calm whose hammered dulcimer drives the rhythm, dances lightly around a melody, and fills a room with warm vibrating sound. Their background is in Celtic traditions and to these roots they remain true, most of the time! They find joy in experimental approaches to traditional tunes and continually find new inspiration from some great contemporary bands from Ireland and the British Isles. You can find out more about them at www.secondwindmontana.com As previous years have shown, the Ravencourt concerts have become very popular. It’s recommended to come earlier and enjoy the ambience of Ravencourt before the music begins. Admission for these concerts is by donation with all proceeds going to the performers. Ravencourt B&B is located at 4615 Upper Passmore Road, www. ravencourtbandb.com Turn off Highway 6 at Passmore, cross the bridge and follow the signs to pure musical enjoyment. It’s a windy drive to this straw bale B&B, but well worth the discovery. Refreshments will be available. For more information phone 250-226-7801.

We Are Made Of Energy
When Albert Einstein said “Everything is energy … this is not philosophy, this is physics,” he was not joking! Scientific research has proven that we are energetic beings. We take care of our bodies by learning to balance our energies. We remind our bodies that we are designed for health. Our physical bodies play out energetic patterns held in our minds, our feelings, and our emotions. This means that illness shows up first in irregular energy patterns. These can be detected and corrected before the patterns develop into physical disease. Energy Medicine work is truly preventive care. This event includes presentations by tourism experts and entrepreneurs, sharing of collaborative tourism marketing initiatives from throughout the Kootenay and Boundary regions, and a tour of the Lower Columbia. It finishes with a unique way to celebrate our uniqueness! In keeping with the tourism theme, we ask all attendees to bring a small tourism-related gift or souvenir from your region to exchange with another participant during the opening ice breaker session. Some examples could be tickets to your local festival or your home team’s sporting event, coupons to your museum or other local attractions, or samples of locally made chocolate or wine. We request that all participants bring examples of successful collaborative initiatives; be prepared to speak to them, there will be prizes! Winning Photographs Grace Nelson Library Walls The West Kootenay Camera Club has clicked with our region’s camera enthusiasts for 25 years, sharing tips and expertise, enthusiasm and support, and a love for the art of photography. In celebration, the club is showing work throughout the Kootenays, including a special show at the Nelson Public Library in May and June. Each year the Club holds a photography show and competition, this year at the Kootenay Gallery in Castlegar June 5 -12, showcasing the work of talented local photographers vying for prizes. This year’s show, with more than 200 entries expected, celebrated a quarter century for the West Kootenay Camera Club. Last year’s winning photographs make up the Nelson Library show. Photographers include Jim Ford (portrait and travel categories), Jim Lawrence (wildlife and nature categories), Peter Moll (human interest), Marie Croteau (flowers), Jerry Schmidt (junk), Ross Scott (open category), and Nel Vandergaag (architecture). The Camera Club meets every second Monday, September through June in the Castlegar Library meeting room, and they welcome new members. Monthly friendly competitions help hone skills, and there’s an annual photo show. There are workshops, field trips, and opportunities for good fun. For more information on the club go to www.westkootenaycameraclub.com Submitted by Anne DeGrace

West Arm Water Quality Monitoring Program Begins! We are pleased to announce that next week we are starting the third and final year of a three year water quality monitoring program. The study will provide important baseline data for one of the highest populated portions of the lake, encouraging a broader and deeper understanding of the lake’s ecosystem. In the first two years we captured 10,200 data points and provided one on one training with over 50 volunteers. Our plan is to monitor by boat 12 times between May and October, for the following parameters: chlorophyll a, turbidity, total phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate and nitrite, ammonia, fecal coliform, E coli, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, organic nitrogen, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and water clarity. We are also teaming up with the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee to monitor for zebra and quagga mussels. These aquatic invasive species are posing a threat to many of our freshwater systems in BC including Kootenay Lake. Want to get involved with our program? Come join us on the boat to try your hand at water quality monitoring! Check friendsofkootenaylake.ca for water monitoring dates. For further information please contact Claire de la Salle –Program Manager email: info@friendsofkootenaylake.ca Phone 250-777-2955. Submitted by Claire de la Sall
Help Turtles Cross The Road With Victoria Day officially marking the beginning of cottage and road trip season, more Canadians are embracing the great outdoors, it’s not just humans that are getting out and about; many wildlife species are also on the move in search of prime nesting habitat to mate and breed. This often requires crossing busy roads. With June being the height of nesting season for turtles, ’tis the time to learn about our reptilian friends and what you can do to help them cross safely! There are 14 species of turtles in Canada: one snapping turtle, one softshell turtle, one mud or musk turtle, six pond and marsh turtles, one box turtle, and four species of sea turtle. Because turtles are long-lived, it can take eight to 25 years (depending on species) to reach maturity and reproduce. As a result, the loss of one reproductive female can take a serious toll on the species’ populations; particularly ones at risk of extinction or extirpation (locally extinct but still exists elsewhere). Besides the threat of road mortality, turtles are also vulnerable to habitat loss and predation. It is estimated that less than one in 100 turtle eggs laid will hatch grow into an adult. By conducting yearly inventories and tracking, scientists can keep a watchful eye on the species’ long-term population trends. Keep these rules of engagement in mind the next time you hit the road: •
Justice Great dog! She's a friendly, loving, affectionate corgi mix, about 40 lbs and 8 years young. Justice came from a rural environment, and is good with chickens, cats, and most other dogs. She's very much a pet though, she loves to be with her person as much as possible and enjoys car rides, watching TV on the couch, sleeping beside or on the bed at night. Adult home or older kids. She needs a moderate level of activity, and often walks are more about sniffing than mileage. Read more about Justice on our web site www. kaap.ca/justice, or call KAAP at 250-551-1053. She is being fostered in Nelson.

Slow down in areas where water and wetlands are on both sides of the road. Be extra alert when driving, especially in the morning, late afternoon and evening, in June, to watch for turtles, snakes and amphibians. Most turtles can be safely carried off roads with two hands, one on either side of the turtle’s shell. Use a flat object (such as a car mat or card board) to move snapping turtles. Always carry or move turtles off roads in the direction they were heading (if moved off the road back to where they came from, they will likely try to cross again). Never move turtles to what you think is more suitable habitat (including your home!); they have a home range and know where they are heading. Contact your local wildlife rehabilitation centre upon encountering an injured turtle. Turtles are resilient creatures that can survive injuries that look fatal. Find out more about how NCC is helping to protect turtle habitats and how you can help by visiting www.natureconservancy.ca or call 1-800-465-0029.

Argentine Tango Workshop
Stroke Awareness Campaign
Lori Mitchell and Patrick Marsolek of Tango Missoula will once again grace local tangueros with their talent and teaching skills June 5, 6 and 7 in Nelson. The pair combine years of dance training and experience and will bring their unique combination of skills to assist dancers in developing dynamic and living connections: to themselves, to each other, to the music and to other dancers on the floor; plus exciting new styles from a recent trip to Buenos Aires. They encourage an organic discovery of your natural way of moving while building on the fundamentals of the dance. Even advanced dancers will find workshop content to satisfy them. Mitchel & Marsolek will offer six workshops at different levels over the weekend, as well as a Friday evening practica and Saturday night Grand Milonga. On Friday a welcoming potluck dinner is scheduled for 6 o’clock at the newly refurbished Taghum Hall, 10km west of Nelson, the venue for the entire workshop. A limited number of private lessons are available too. Please contact franwallis@redmtn.ca for all the details and join us June 5 for an exciting weekend of Argentine Tango! Submitted by Fran Wallis
An Introduction To Death Midwifery Just as birth midwives help us enter this world, death midwives help us leave it. And just as birth midwives reclaimed birth as a family-focused event and a sacred rite of passage, death midwives are doing the same for death. On Thursday, June 4, 6:30 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion in Nelson, join Sarah Kerr, PhD., a death midwife and celebrant, for an evening of storytelling, teaching, and conversation. She’ll speak about her own death midwifery practice, as well as about the growing social movement to offer holistic support to dying people and their families. Dying is a natural and normal part of life, but it’s a learned skill. In a death-denying culture, few of us learn how to navigate the soul journey that our own death, or the death of someone we love, brings. Sarah’s work focuses on creating new family and community rituals that help us learn us to meet death with an open heart. For more information visit www.soulpassages.ca, email sarahkerr@telus.net or call Sarah at 403-289-2230. Submitted Sarah Kerr
The Heart and Stroke Foundation launched a new province wide FAST signs of stroke awareness campaign on the steps of the Legislature on Tuesday, May 26. FAST stands for: Face – is it drooping? Arms – can you raise both? Speech – is it slurred or jumbled? Time to call 9-1-1 right away. The FAST theme has been proven in many countries around the world, and is an easy way to remind people of the major signs of stroke and the urgency of seeking medical attention. The Minister of Health, Terry Lake; neurologist Dr. John Falconer; electrophysiologist Dr. Chris Lane; and Adrienne Bakker, CEO BC and Yukon, Heart and Stroke Foundation were among the speakers at the event. “Our objective is to ensure that all Canadians, no matter where they live or how old they are, know and remember the signs of stroke with the FAST approach,” said Ms. Bakker. “The faster you can get to the right hospital when experiencing stroke, the better your chances of survival and recovery with little or no disability. Time is brain: brain cells die at a rate of two million per minute after stroke, so the sooner normal blood flow can be restored, the greater the likelihood of a good outcome.” Stroke is the number three killer of Canadians, and is the leading cause of disability. Stroke facts: • A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function. • 62,000 strokes occur in Canada each year – that is one stroke every nine minutes. • 83 per cent of those who have a stroke and make it to hospital will now survive. • Brain cells die at a rate of 1.9 million per minute after stroke. • Each year, more than 13,000 Canadians die from stroke. • Hundreds of thousands of Canadians are living with the effects of stroke. • Stroke is a leading cause of disability. • Stroke can happen at any age. Stroke among people under 65 is increasing and stroke risk factors are increasing for young adults. • Half of Canadians report having a close friend or family member who survived a stroke. Lt Governor Of BC Visits Kaslo On Thursday, May 14 the Lt Governor of BC, the Honourable Judith Guichon, visited Kaslo. Because she had only a few hours in Kaslo, it was important to show her our two National Historic Sites. First we viewed the old City Hall, where she honoured Kaslo’s former CAO Rae Sawyer with an engraved plaque in appreciation of her many years of service to Kaslo. Her Honour and entourage were then taken, via horse and carriage provided by Kootenay Horse and Carriage, to the SS Moyie Sternwheeler. After a brief tour of the ship, a beautiful high tea luncheon was catered on board by the Kaslo Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Beautiful classical guitar music was provided by David Stewart over the luncheon hour. Current CAO Neil Smith PAGE 40

presented her Honour with a gift basket of locally made items – soaps, candles and chocolates, graciously provided by Figments in Kaslo. With no time to waste, it was off to JV Humprhries school to meet the school children and attend a 45 minute assembly complete with a short performance of the traditional May Pole dance by grades two and three. The Honourable Judith Guichon spoke to the school children about the electoral process, the importance of the land and the importance of being involved in the government they elected. Her comments on how there are more micro-organisms in a tablespoon of soil than people on the planet was very popular indeed and left more than a few of the students gazing in wonder at their own cupped hand. Die Wise Author Stephen Jenkinson Speaks In Kaslo Stephen Jenkinson, author of Die Wise, will speak in Kaslo on Tuesday, June 16, from 7 to 9 pm at the Langham Cultural Centre. A teacher, author and a social worker, Stephen Jenkinson is also an activist who is passionate about supporting quality care for dying people and their families. He has Master’s degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work), and is the subject of the National Film Board of Canada’s film: Griefwalker. He is currently touring with his new book Die Wise. “Dying well”, Jenkinson writes, “is a right and responsibility of everyone. It is a moral, political, and spiritual obligation each person owes their ancestors and their heirs. It is not a lifestyle option. It is a birthright and a debt. Die Wise dreams such a dream, and plots such an uprising. How we die, how we care for dying people, and how we carry our dead: this work makes our village life or breaks it.” Die Wise does not offer seven steps for coping with death. It does not suggest ways to make dying easier. It pours no honey to make the medicine go down. Instead, with lyrical prose, deep wisdom, and stories from his two decades of working with dying people and their families, Stephen places death at the centre of the page and asks us to behold it in all its painful beauty. For more information Google or You-Tube Stephen Jenkinson or www.orphanwisdom.com This community event is sponsored by the Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake. Advance tickets in Kaslo at Sunnyside Naturals $15, or $20/door. Submitted by Chelsea Van Koughnett

Peony Show Luncheon & Presentation
It is not often that a peony expert and grower comes to Castlegar to judge a show and give a presentation on peonies. On Saturday, June 27 there will be a luncheon and presentation given by Carol Adelman at the Castlegar Community Complex, Growing and Caring for Peonies. Carol is the President of the Pacific Northwest Peony Association and resides in Salem, Oregon where she and her family operate Adelman Peony Gardens. Carol is also a member of the Canadian Peony Society. Tickets for the luncheon and presentation are only $20 and available online at www.peonyfarm.ca or one of the following businesses: Kalawsky GM in Castlegar; The Doorway in Trail; Otter Books in Nelson. Why not enter your peony blooms and then stay for the luncheon? This will be an opportunity to meet other peony enthusiasts in the Kootenays and to see peonies of every type and description. Bring a friend and make a day of it! Worried about how to keep your blooms until the show? Need information on how to cut and store your blooms? All this information and more are available at www. peonyfarm.ca Still need more information or have questions? Email info@peonyfarm.ca Submitted by Darlene Kalawsky

Hardwiring Happiness, Peace and Success In Your Life Most self-help experiences are wasted on your brain, passing through it without changing it. Meanwhile, the brain’s negativity bias makes it like Velcro for anxiety, hurt, irritation and other painful life experiences. This not only can harm your own health and wellbeing given the mind/body connection, but also can harm your relationships with others. Life and relationships can be very difficult and stressful at times, and we often cannot control circumstances and certainly not other people. However we do not have to add to the pain and subsequent problems by making it much harder than it has to be. We can override the brain’s negativity bias and negative life experiences, past, present and future, using the power of positive neuroplasticity to rewire the neuropathways in the brain to turn everyday experiences into a deep sense of contentment, love, and peace. It’s like building muscles for happiness inside our own brains by using our minds wisely! Transforming reactive patterns and stress that have unconsciously driven much of our lives takes a clear and simple understanding of our brain/mind, the tools to transform, and the support required to help achieve true freedom. After all, these are deep-seated triggers we all have that have the power to cause great suffering in our lives and keep us from experiencing true inner peace, happiness and success. We can take steps toward freedom by learning a different way of responding to challenging circumstances, and begin to overcome these subtle and tricky patterns that stand in the way of our experience of wellbeing, happiness and success in all areas of our lives. For further learning on the how of peace, happiness and successful living, and setting steady resilience, confidence, and compassion for oneself and others that is simple and easy to learn, go to www.brainmastery.eventbrite.ca Submitted by SueMarie Crawford

A Special Fieldtrip To The Slocan Narrows Archaeological Project (SNAP) Join Café Langham enthusiasts for a rare opportunity to learn first hand about the archaeology of the area, on Monday June 15 at 10:30 am. The Langham’s special field trip will visit archaeologist and anthropologist, Dr. Nathan Goodale and his students at the remains of one of the largest and oldest pithouse village sites in the Columbia Basin, which date back an estimated 3,800 years. Dr. Goodale leads an archaeological field school from Hamilton College, New York, on the Slocan River. His interests lie in the origin of villages and small scale semi-sedentary societies, as well as human technological adaptations. He specializes in the rise of complex hunter-gatherers in the interior Pacific Northwest, the forager/farmer transition in Southwest Asia, and rural coastal adaptations in western Ireland. His research focus includes paleo-demography, technological adaptations, modeling human behaviour with quantitative methods, lithic technological organization, and geochemical spatial analysis, all couched in an evolutionary theoretical framework to understand human behavior. The aboriginal people who lived at the site are believed to be the ancestors of the Sinix’t people who inhabited the territory along the Columbia River from just north of Revelstoke to Kettle Falls in Washington state. The Lemon Creek site contains 32 pithouse indentations, some of which the archaeologists estimate housed up to 55 or 60 people. Carbon dating shows that the
pithouses were used up to the late 1700s when the first of many smallpox epidemics devastated First Nations populations in the region. To learn more about Dr. Goodale’s research and writings, visit: http://people.hamilton.edu/ ngoodale/nathan-goodale-home For more details and to register, contact langham@netidea.com with subject: SNAP or telephone 250-353-2661. Once registered, you will receive more information. Bring a picnic lunch and optional bathing suit. Cost: individual $25, couples $40, children 8 years and older accompanied by an adult $5. Maximum number of participants, 20. Submitted by Maggie Tchir This, and other editorial articles may be viewed, printed or downloaded from the Editorial page at the Pennywise website: www.pennywiseads.com

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS! • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would you want to know about an item you were interested in buying? • Include the brand name (manufacturers spend millions promoting the name and enhancing the image of their products, so take advantage of it). Would you rather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire? • List the item’s best features and what makes your item different from others in the same category. (Remember, the more you tell, the clearer picture a potential buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.) • Take time to research pricing for your article so that you price it reasonably (overpriced items may not receive calls). • Include your phone number and the best times to call. • Ask for the sale...one gentleman put “BUY THIS CAR!” in his ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!
