Off-road vehicle and backcountry restrictions reminder

The BC Wildfire Service reminds the public that the operation of any off-road vehicle for recreational or hunting purposes on Crown land remains prohibited within the Southeast Fire Centre. In addition, all Crown land within the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District remains closed to public access due to the current fire danger ratings and the number of wildfires burning in the region. While some parts of BC have been experiencing cooler temperatures and rain, the fire danger rating is still ‘high or extreme’ in many areas of the Southeast Fire Centre. The BC Wildfire Service continually monitors conditions in the region and these restrictions may be expanded or rescinded as needed. The off-road vehicle

prohibition that is in effect throughout the Southeast Fire Centre and the public access restriction that is in effect in the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District will remain in place until conditions warrant otherwise and the BC Wildfire Service rescinds these two measures. A map of the area affected by the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District closure is available online: http://ow.ly/ EfiR30eQBUm Anyone found in contravention of the off-road vehicle prohibition or the backcountry closure may be issued a violation ticket in the amount of $767. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. Kootenay writers workshops

Registration is now open for the second St. Eugene Writers’ Conference, November 9 to 13, featuring workshops conducted by four writers from the East and West Kootenays among other speakers. The event will be held at the St. Eugene Resort, located just north of Cranbrook. Presenting workshops November 10 to 12 will be Fernie’s Keith Liggett (on finding your voice), Cranbrook’s Sioux Browning (screenwriting), Nelson’s Deryn Collier (fiction) and Winlaw’s Tom Wayman (poetry). A manuscript evaluation workshop for those with a completed manuscript in any genre will run simultaneously November 9 to 12, led by Vancouver’s Mark Kusnir. Tuition plus two nights lodging at the Resort for these workshops is $665, or $710 for registrants after October 15. This amount includes two breakfasts and a conference dinner on November 11. Tuition alone for the three day workshops is $425 and $600 for Kusnir’s four day workshop. A one day workshop on self-publishing with Kaslo’s Randy Morse, Keith Liggett and other guests will round out the conference November 13. Tuition plus a night’s lodging for the self-publishing workshop is $165. Tuition alone is $85, or registrants in other conference workshops can attend for $65. The conference will include afternoon panel discussions on a range of writing related topics, said conference director Keith Liggett. The conference dinner November 11 will feature Fernie author Angie Abdou, speaking about her new novel In Case I Go. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Capitol Theatre in Nelson is set to celebrate with a stellar lineup for the 2017/2018 season. In addition to the usual exciting lineup, a special anniversary celebration, Setting the Stage: 30 Years of Making a Scene, is in the works for March 10. The new season features 12 main stage theatre, music and dance performances. Ragmop Theatre will treat us to a wonderfully bizarre mastery of physical theatre and Shay Kuebler returns with his contemporary dance piece Telemetry featuring tap dancer Danny Nielson. OURO Collective will be on stage with their dance performance Tangent and deliver workshops on hip-hop, waacking, breaking, popping and contemporary dance. We have a selection of music for all tastes from jazz to world music and amazing performance about obsessive-compulsive disorder Brain by Brendan McLeod. Ballet Joergen Canada will treat us to Anastasia and since we know that laughter is the ultimate medicine we are presenting two hilarious comedy acts. “This season, Capitol Theatre performances will start at 7:30 pm to make it easier for patrons who have to travel back home in the winter months and for parents who have to hire a babysitter,” says executive director Stephanie Fischer. “Our patrons have been asking for this and we’ve acted!” “This year special appreciation is due to those who had the vision and tenacity to refurbish a damaged old theatre,” says Fischer. Myth #1: People spend most of their time online and don’t read printed materials anymore. New York Times: The digital revolution hasn’t put an end to print media, but, rather, has led to the emergence of a new type of reader – a ‘hybrid reader’ – who can easily juggle devices and paper.
