CULTURE CONNECTION DESPERATE TIMES These are desperate times. The flight of refugees from their war-torn homelands have caught the fascination of the world. Over 5,000 refugees, sometimes traveling on overcrowded rubber dinghies, perished in the Mediterranean Sea during the year 2016. Reports reveal that children have been brutally killed as religious and ethnic minorities have been massacred by the jihadist militant group known as ISIS. However, the violence is not confined to remote locations in the world. According to one 2017 statistic, in the city of Chicago, Illinois, a person is shot every two hours and twenty-eight minutes. Yes, these are desperate days, but in the midst of the darkness in our world, we can have peace that passes understanding. As Christians, we have so much for which to thank God. There are so many blessings that come our way. These blessings come so easily that we may not even recognize them, much less thank the Lord for them. Every day God wants to commune with us and encourage us to fellowship with Him in prayer and in the reading of His Word. The Lord loves to abundantly bless His people, loves to provide for their needs, loves to show His strength in their times of weakness, and loves to forgive and restore them when they fail. We trust God in these desperate times. Psalm 121:7 states, “The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.”

This lesson can be a minefield. As we look for the blessings of God, we must step around and beside personal opinions and misguided suggestions from some television and radio evangelists about the blessings of God. Some well-intentioned viewers have emptied their bank accounts to give all they own, seeking blessings, only to be bankrupted. Many who walk this minefield have been hurt by the exploding shrapnel of greed and vow never to be hurt again. The word blessings is a cue for them to exit through the back door, never to come back again through the front door. But it is not God’s will for a few to hijack the beauty of God’s blessings for all.

SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES

The lesson commentary is presented in an easy-toread one-column format.

I. GOD CREATED THAT WHICH WAS GOOD We need only to open the front flap of our Bibles, thumb past the table of contents, turn to the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, and we will see good and perfect gifts God gives. There are seven verses in Genesis 1 where God steps back, takes a look at His work, and sees that it is good. He created light and dark, dry land and sea, fruit trees and plants, sun and moon, fowl that fly and fish that swim, small animals that scurry and beefy animals that roam. Then God reached into the dirt, molded man, and then smiled as wide as the Milky Way and beheld, “it was very good.” (See Genesis 1:3–4, 10, 12, 16–18, 21, 25, 27–31.) A. Good Things Are Gifts from God

Those seven passages in Genesis 1 agree with the one passage in James 1 that every good and perfect gift comes from God. (See James 1:17.) They lift their verses in a duet to teach us God gives us good gifts. If you take inventory of your life and find any good gifts, you can be assured they came from God. You can know the return address without one glance at the card. Life is good because God is good. When your boss promotes you, your banker approves you, you open the mailbox to find money, or you open the door to find food, those are all from God. They are not just gifts from a benevolent boss or banker. They are from God. Man may be the delivery driver, but go ahead and read the return address. You will find the blessings in life come from God. B. God Enjoys His Creation

So why does the Holy God of Heaven, who dwells in unapproachable light, bless us? He blesses us because it pleases Him to bless us. Here is where we tiptoe through the minefield. God’s blessings do not always come with four walls and a roof or four wheels and a sunroof. Sometimes God’s blessings are pink and orange sunsets splashed across the western sky. Sometimes His blessings are the coos and caws of a baby girl, or the gentle hand of a lifelong love to calm fear before a surgery. God’s blessings come through gifts we can wrap and some we cannot. If you think His blessings cause you to smile, read John’s writing in Revelation 4:11. “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased” (Revelation 4:11, NLT). If we could see what John the writer and revelator saw, we would see a smile across God’s face when His people are blessed. Think about that. It blesses God to bless us. It certainly blessed God to bless Solomon. II. GOD BLESSED SOLOMON WITH GOOD THINGS Solomon’s father was the king. From his toddling days, tuxedoed servants waited on Solomon’s every whim. His personal chauffeur shuttled him wherever he wanted and was allowed to go. Solomon did not have to mow the lawn or do the dishes.

Never dealing with dishpan hands was just one of the perks of being the king’s kid. There were servants for the lawn and the laundry. Solomon had other things to do like horseback riding and chess club. But when he was crowned king, his to-do list ballooned to include leading fourstar generals as they led their troops to the front lines to stare down death; levying just enough taxes to stay in business but not too much to cause a coup; keeping enough grain flowing to stave off a famine; and at times playing judge, jury, and even executioner. It did not take many days on Israel’s throne before Solomon realized the crown was far too big for him. Solomon knew it, and so did God. So during a dream, God asked Solomon what he wanted more than anything. Solomon wisely asked for wisdom. “Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” (I Kings 3:9, NKJV). A. Spiritual Wisdom and Financial Blessings

But the gifts did not end with wisdom. (See I Kings 3:10–14.) By the time God was finished bringing all the gifts to the gift table, Solomon went home with wisdom, riches, honor, and a legacy that would not be eclipsed by any other king in Israel’s storied history. Solomon’s greatest blessing could not be measured on a scale or spent in a store; Solomon’s greatest blessing was wisdom and understanding to judge God’s people. Those blessings pleased Solomon, and it pleased God to bless him. God kept His promise. He made Solomon rich. He made him the richest man to ever live. During his forty-year reign, he received twenty-five tons of gold annually from taxes. No wonder the children of Israel begged for tax relief after his reign. (See I Kings 12:4.) These taxes were only the beginning of his fortune. Kings and traders around the world sent tribute money to Solomon. He was the king of the most formidable fighting force, so it behooved the neighboring kings to be kind to Solomon in hopes he would be kind to them. B. The Queen of Sheba

Perhaps that is why the queen of Sheba had to see it for herself. She heard the reports. Maybe she even saw the quarterly profit reports and wanted to know if Solomon’s accountant was really telling the truth. Or maybe she heard about the world famous “divide-the-baby-in-half-to-find-out-the-real-mother” verdict. Could one man leading one nation be so wise and so blessed? This queen marshalled a caravan to travel from Sheba to Israel to meet that king and ask him some hard questions. She did not hold back and Solomon did not disappoint. I Kings 10 tells us she asked him all the questions that were in her heart, and he answered all her questions. She stopped speaking and started looking and she was breathless. She saw the house it took his hired help thirteen years to build, the spread of food on the table, the seating of his servants, the service of his servants, his cupbearers, and the way he ascended to the house of the Lord. Her closing commentary before packing up and

heading home was, “The half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard” (I Kings 10:7, NKJV). » » »

Why are we often uncomfortable talking about the financial blessings of God? Are God’s financial blessings the best blessings He gives? If not, what are God’s best blessings? Even with all his wealth and wisdom, was Solomon happy? Why or why not?

III. GOD BLESSES US WITH GOOD THINGS We know God has so much more to offer when He calls us home, but according to King Solomon, it is the will of God to enjoy living as long as we are living. If God has given you strength to work, then work for the glory of God and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Sometimes the best Friday or Saturday nights are spent on the front porch with a book in one hand and a soda in the other. You have worked hard to make a living, so enjoy living. Make sure you do not work so much that you have no strength left to enjoy the living you were making when you were making a living. A. It Is Not Sinful to Enjoy God’s Blessings

We tend to feel guilty when we kick back and enjoy God’s blessings. When was the last time you enjoyed a day off? Taking a day off and enjoying a day off are not the same. We are such a driven society that many who take a day off feel guilty for not working. We think we should be in the office, in the field, on the job. We should be answering questions, returning e-mails, following leads, contacting clients, reading the latest and greatest business book, or texting a few prospects to make a sale. Even on our days off, we often bulldoze past rest right back into work. B. He Gave Them to Us for Our Pleasure and Enjoyment

But this lesson today is designed to give you permission to enjoy the blessings of God. If God has given you a family with children, drive the car God gave you and go buy the children He gave you some ice cream. Play catch with your sons. Enjoy tea with your daughters (even if there is no tea in the cups). Walk with your wife. Hold your husband’s hand. According to Solomon we toil and labor so we can have time and freedom to enjoy God’s great gifts. But herein lies a danger. We must beware lest God’s blessings become a curse to us. When we spend so much time enjoying life that our pursuit of pleasure eclipses our pursuit of God, His blessings have become a curse to us. There are many parents with children and teens in sports or clubs at school. Good parents want to be a part of their children’s lives, but if your child misses Sunday services, youth services, or youth rallies just to play in a game or in a recital, our pursuit of pleasure has eclipsed our pursuit of God. Understandably, there are times when the boss calls for mandatory overtime. Maybe she calls you to work on a Sunday to prepare the store for the work week, but if you pick up a second job or work overtime and weekends just to buy bigger, nicer,

newer things, God’s blessings have become a curse. Before you work another optional weekend and miss another weekend at church, take time to enjoy the blessings God has already given. One of God’s greatest gifts is the privilege to soak your soul in His presence at church. It is a gift riches cannot buy and poverty cannot steal. » » »

When is the last time you slowed down long enough to truly enjoy the living you were making for you and your family? Ask yourself, have you ever allowed God’s blessings to become a curse to you? Have you ever allowed your pursuit of pleasure to eclipse your pursuit of God? If so, how can you adjust your priorities to put God first again?

IV. WE SHOULD BLESS GOD IN RESPONSE TO THE BLESSINGS HE GIVES TO US We learn some lessons the hard way, as did the hard-working farmer in Jesus’ story. He was a farmer when farming was even harder work than it is now—before air-conditioned tractors built with satellite radio. During those sunup to sundown days, this farmer’s hard work paid off. His bumper crops were bumping against the walls of his barns. He sat down, stroked his sweat-soaked chin a few times, and asked himself what he was going to do with all those crops. He had more food than he could eat and was making more money than he could spend. Then he had a brainstorm—or so he thought. He determined at the next sunrise to break out the tools and break down the barns to make room for bigger barns so he could hold more and more. He had it all planned out. He could take a few years off from work, travel the world, buy a condo on the Mediterranean, and live the good life. Little did he know, that night would be the last night of his entire life. And Jesus opened the altar with this stinging indictment followed by this haunting question in Luke 12, “‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:20–21, NKJV). The right response to the rich blessings of God is not to keep them all to ourselves. It is not to hoard them and hope for more. The right response to the blessings of God is to bless Him and to bless others. A. Blessing Others

There are times when we give and God gives right back. In 2014 Elijah Whitworth was twelve years old. All summer he mowed one lawn after another to save money to buy a shotgun. By the close of summer, he had saved $300. When Living Way Church in Conroe, Texas, received their sacrificial Sheaves for Christ (SFC) offering, Elijah gave $100 of his hard-earned money to SFC. As the church continued to give, Elijah felt a call to give more, so he gave another $100. After service his parents told the family they had decided to give the $1,000 they had been saving for Christmas. Christmas was going to be different this year. There would not be as many presents, if any, but they gave to bless the kingdom of God. The entire family agreed it was more blessed to give.

During the Christmas season, one of the major corporations in their area heard of the family’s sacrifice. Many of the children were foster children, and the corporation was searching for a local family to bless with a surprise Christmas. They chose the Whitworth family. On Christmas morning presents were stacked and laid out in the living room from the wall toward the middle of the floor. It looked like a miniature Toys“R”Us store. The Whitworth family was blessed, so they blessed the kingdom of God. When they blessed God, God blessed the Whitworths. Eljiah’s pastor shared the story of his sacrifice, and a group of three district youth presidents were so moved, they pooled their money together and bought Elijah a shotgun, which was far better than the one he was going to buy. God often blesses us when we bless Him and others. But we do not give just so we can receive. We give so we can bless others, and God’s gracious nature often gives back, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. He does not have to bless us when we bless others, but His gracious nature often does. B. In Worship

The right response to the rich blessings of God is also to bless Him for blessing us. We cannot write a check to make Him richer, build Him a newer house, or give Him a nicer car. So how do we bless our God for blessing us? We bless Him through our worship. When we come to church, we have the privilege to openly and publicly praise and worship God for what He has done and for who He is. When we kneel in the quiet of our home, we have the privilege to privately praise and worship God for what He has done and for who He is. We learned from James 1 that God is the giver of all good gifts.

. INTERNALIZING THE MESSAGE Humanity has been on this march for over 6,000 years now. That means we have been living and learning for over 6,000 years. We are not the first ones to feel guilty for enjoying life, and we are not the first ones to feel jealous of someone else’s life. But we have centuries and millennia from which to learn, so we do not make the same mistakes others made. From this point forward, purpose in your heart to be more thankful for the rich blessings of God—more gratitude, less grumble. And take the time to enjoy the living you are making. Rest. Enjoy your family. Enjoy the view. And be willing to bless others with God’s blessings and bless God for His blessings. You will find the most blessed life is when one blesses others and blesses God.

Unit Aim: This unit calls us to rediscover a complete biblical understanding of the command: “Be ye holy; for I am holy” (I Peter 1:16). When we live in covenant relationship with God, we begin to look more like Him and live in ways that reflect His character and values.

Embark A. Option 1—Discussion

1. Instruct the class to use their student handbooks for this exercise. 2. List as many practical ways as possible that we can imitate the holiness of God in our emotions (heart), intellect (mind), spirituality (soul), and physical nature (strength).

3. Give groups three to five minutes to complete the list. Then gather the groups and combine the lists to see what the groups discovered. a. When we start thinking about imitating God practically, what challenges come to mind? b. What is inspiring about being holy in all facets of our lives? c. What is your prayer as we finish these lessons on imitating God? 4. In today’s session we want to explore how we can imitate God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. This is what it means to imitate the complete (holistic) nature of God and follow the biblical command: “Be ye holy; for I am holy” (I Peter 1:16, KJV). Holiness is imitating the whole character of God.

B. Option 2—Google It

The challenge is for each team to do a Google search on the question: What is love? Then each group will share with the entire class a brief statement of their findings. 3. c. What aspects of God’s love are easy for you to reflect? What attributes of His love are more difficult for you to reflect? d. What would it look like to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength? e. What would it look like to love others as God has loved us? 4. When we are seeking answers, we often go to Google because it is a quick way to find an answer. a. The trouble with Google, though, is there are a variety of answers to consider, and we never know which one is factual. b. While it has been interesting to see how people perceive God, the Bible is the authority for understanding God’s character. 5. When we start thinking about all the attributes of God, it is incredible to think that He wants us to be just like Him. And this understanding should shape our behavior as we aspire to imitate His character. 6. In today’s session we want to explore how we can imitate God with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. This is what it means to imitate the complete, holistic nature of God and follow the biblical command: “Be ye holy; for I am holy” (I Peter 1:16, KJV). Holiness is imitating the whole character of God.

EXPLORE

A. Emotional Holiness

1. Read John 15:11; 16:16–24; Colossians 2:9–10.

2. Holy people should be happy people. a. If reflecting the holiness of God permeates every aspect of our lives, then our emotions are also complete in Him.

b. In fear we may hide our emotions from His grace, but faith encourages us to allow Him to transform our hearts. c. Emotional maturity, then, is typically a sign we are living as holy people. Our hope and happiness are not conditional or circumstantial; they are founded on the holiness of God. 3. As Paul wrote to the Ephesians, we should protect our hearts with the “breastplate of righteousness” (Ephesians 6:14, KJV). When we live a righteous life, doing the right thing, then we protect our hearts and emotions from the attacks of the enemy. 4. Imitating God is joyful. a. In Christ we have the deep-centered reality of joy to guide our emotions. Jesus says that our joy is complete in Him, in spite of the hostility of the world (John 16:33). b. As holy people of God, we can be assured our sorrow is only temporary.

c. We are not aloof to the sorrow or discouraging nature of our world. We are deeply centered in our relationship with Jesus Christ and thus imitate His hope in the world. 5. Joy, then, is not based upon whether we are in good or bad circumstances, but upon the gracious love of Christ. a. A sanctified mind is uniquely set apart from the thinking of people who are not in covenant relationship with Christ. b. Paul’s admonition to the Romans makes it clear for us—when we are transformed by the renewing of our minds, then we can do the will of God (Romans 12:2). c. The correct orientation of our thoughts leads to faith-filled actions that are honorable to the will of God. As Paul explained in his letter to the Colossians, “We have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9–10, NASB). 4. Imitating God is wise. a. Wisdom is a gift from God that results from a sincere desire to live in the image of God as He created us to be—holy. b. God is wise, so if we are to be like Him and imitate Him, then we will also be wise. c. Holiness of the mind is the result of living in the fear of God. The fear (or deep reverence) of the Lord is the first step to wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). d. Recognizing who God is becomes the starting place for the way we think and the way we live. Everything in our lives is viewed through scriptural vision—relationships, work, school, and so on.

The status of our physical health can positively or adversely impact our mental and emotional well-being. c. We are to love God holistically, including with our bodies: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27, NKJV). 3. Read I Corinthians 6:19–20. 4. Imitating God is healthy. a. The context of these verses is referring to sexual immorality, but honoring God not only involves abstaining from sin, but also consecrating our bodies to God. b. We can positively honor God not only by abstaining, but also by taking care of our bodies and in the way we present them. • Have you ever considered holiness in the context of your physical health? How does this influence your understanding of holiness? • What seems to control or influence the physical health of people in our world and how they present themselves? • How can we imitate God with our physical body and be holy?

D. A Look Back

Indeed, it is a work of the Spirit in our lives, but we must remain planted in Him with our decisions and behaviors in order to experience the blessedness of a holy life and be holy as He is holy.

EXPAND A. Option 1—Prayer

1. Have students form groups of two or three. Have them share reflections about today’s lesson with their small groups. 2. Afterward, ask for volunteers to share their reflections with the entire group.

Teacher Tip: Make any announcements and arrange for any supplies needed next week to host the Holiness Project group presentations.

The Expand section provides closing discussion points and prompts for leading students in a time of prayer for the Spirit to move in their lives.

3. At the end, have students pray for one another. Challenge them to allow the teaching on God’s holiness to inspire them to imitate the holiness of God in their lives. 4. After the lesson, discussion, and prayer, invite the entire group out to an activity together as a community. It would be good to make this an activity that encourages healthy physical holiness. 5. While spending time together, talk about how we can become more like God and how we can encourage one another in their pursuit of holiness.

B. Option 2—Holiness Project 1. Direct students to get in their groups for the recurring project. Give them five minutes for review. 2. Instruct them to use this time to develop their “Holiness” project more and make assignments to take home this week. a. What other steps need to be taken in order to make the project a reality? b. Will the teachings from this lesson influence the project? If so, how? 3. Ask each group to give you an update at the end of class so you can redirect any groups that need help.

When we look at holiness, we must understand that this is an all-or-nothing premise. If we seek to be holy, we must endeavour to be holy in action, thought, and in our emotional states. Everywhere we look, God’s blessings are evident. Yet in the struggles of life, we are often blind to those blessings. Similarly, we may become comfortable and take those blessings for granted. In a society filled with entitlement thinking and materialistic attitudes, it is vital that our children study God’s blessings. The needs and wants of life get mixed together, and our children may not see the difference. God’s blessings are far above the things He provides. His blessings enhance every moment of our lives. Teach your students to look for the details when God brings blessings. Remind them that His blessings make life beautiful.

Pass the puzzle-box to collect offering. Students draw one line connecting two dots on the chart (ap) . Introduce the Bible point: God gives us good things to enjoy.

Teachers welcome students with an introduction to the Bible Point, as well as take attendance and offering.

Challenge students to think of a blessing that begins with each letter in the word BLESSING. Write these on the board.

Opening Activity: Count Our Blessings

God’s blessings are all around us. Often we fail to notice those blessings. He blesses us with all sorts of things. • Name a blessing in your life.

An Opening Activity will EXCITE them with a sensory experience and ENGAGE them in a fun, thought-provoking, team-building activity to lay groundwork for the remainder of the lesson.

• Why do you think God blesses His people? Instruct students to each find one hidden Blessing card (trp) and return to their seats. Once all are seated, ask each one to show the card and explain why it is a blessing. If there are still cards missing, continue this activity until all cards are found and discussed. Each picture shows a blessing in our lives. The longer we live for Jesus, the more we see His blessings around us. Sometimes blessings are hiding near us and we must look carefully to notice the blessing. Show the container. We might be like this container—empty inside. We need our lives filled. God’s blessings are the best way to fill our lives. Recall each blessing by calling students up to show their pictures and place them in the container.

Access Prior Experience: Students tell of the richest place they have ever seen or visited (a rich uncle, a tourist location, a house in a news article). Discuss how people react to riches.

Bible Lesson: Solomon Shows His Riches (I Kings 10)

Help students locate I King 10 in their Bibles. Explain that this is where today’s Bible lesson is found. Select volunteers to play Solomon, the Queen of Sheba, and servants. Help students put on costumes, and hand out props to remaining students. I Kings 10 tells us about the wisest and richest king of Israel—King Solomon. What made him so wise and wealthy? It was because he sought God’s wisdom.

Bible Lesson Verse

“Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 5:19).

• Recall how Solomon received wisdom and riches. • Why do you think God blessed Solomon with so many riches?

First teachers prompt students to share personal stories and prior experiences to prepare their minds to RELATE to the experiences of the Bible characters. Then students RECEIVE God’s story through an interactive, ageappropriate presentation.

King Solomon wrote many parts of the Old Testament. Help students find and read Ecclesiastes 5:19: “Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.” King Solomon steps forward. His servants bring him money and items. King Solomon’s wisdom and riches were talked about all over the world. Other nations heard the stories about him. His kingdom was known for riches and peaceful living. One ruler could not believe what she heard. She thought these were just made-up stories—no king could really be that wise and rich.

The Bible Lesson Verse quotes the perfect take-away passage that encapsulates the essence of the Bible lesson as it relates to the Bible Point.

Queen of Sheba walks toward King Solomon, reacting in surprise at the riches she sees. The Queen of Sheba traveled from her county to visit King Solomon. She wanted to see if the stories were true. She wanted to ask the hardest questions she could think of to King Solomon. • What question would you ask King Solomon if you were the queen? God blessed King Solomon with wisdom. He could answer every question the queen asked. She saw God’s wisdom in Solomon. Encourage the queen to ask a hard question. Help Solomon if he is unable to answer it.

The Teacher’s Resource Packet and Activity Paper are commonly used as essential tools in helping the teacher tell the story.

King Solomon took the queen on a tour of his kingdom. She saw all his treasures: his palace, his officers and servants, and his good food and clothing. She was amazed at his offerings and how Solomon worshiped God. The queen told Solomon that while she could hardly believe what she heard, now she knew it was all true. Show the Solomon Shows His Riches Bible art (trp). King Solomon shows the queen treasures, servants, food, clothing, and his offering by leading her among the students. Students interact with her by showing the prop they are holding. After seeing God’s blessings and hearing God’s wisdom, the queen was changed. She was amazed at what she saw. The Queen of Sheba gave King Solomon expensive gifts from her country. She blessed God for giving Solomon wisdom and riches. King Solomon also gave gifts to the queen. They both knew that God blesses those who follow Him. The queen gives a gift to King Solomon. She raises her hands and proclaims, “Bless the Lord!” • What did King Solomon show the Queen of Sheba? • Compare how the queen felt before and after visiting King Solomon.

Prepare a party table. Enjoy a snack with students and continue the role-play between the queen and Solomon. God blesses me. He gives me good things to enjoy in life.

This section challenges students to relate their personal stories to God’s story. Games, activities, discussion, and role-playing help them APPLY the Bible Point to their lives.

• Summarize the visit between the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. God’s blessings make our lives beautiful. Just as the queen saw how happy and blessed King Solomon was, others can see God’s blessings in our lives. When we follow Jesus and ask for His wisdom, His blessings fill our lives. The best blessing Jesus gives us is salvation. It changes our lives. When we repent of our sins, get baptized in Jesus’ name, and receive the Holy Ghost, we feel blessed!

Then students have an opportunity to ACT upon God’s Word through a prayerful response and a call to action.

• Name some blessings that we have from the Lord. Tell about good things God gives us to enjoy. • How do these blessings prove God is good?

Prayer and Call to Action

Distribute activity papers. God provides food and wants us to enjoy His blessing. On the front page, students circle the foods they enjoy. Recite the memory verse, “Every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 3:13).

Each lesson ends with suggestions to connect the lesson to the home.

God blesses us with good food. There are countries where people do not have enough food or the food is not healthy to eat. Healthy food is a blessing for our bodies, and we should always thank the Lord for that blessing prior to eating.

The Home Connection calendar provides a unit overview, laying out each lesson’s biblical text, Bible Point, and Life Application, as well as suggesting a fun family activity to further stimulate discussion.

Show the Blessings cards (trp) and let students think about how God has blessed them in each of these areas. Discuss how we can show these blessings to others without looking like we are bragging. Lead in a prayer of thanksgiving. Teacher offers a starter sentence and helps each student pray, “Thank You, Jesus, for blessing me with __________.”

Home Connection

• For students who did not receive one yet, send home a copy of the unit 2 Home Connection calendar (trp) . • For each student, send home a copy of the lesson 7 devotion URL on page 2 of the activity paper to parents.

Activity Paper

On the back of the activity paper, ask student to find and color the items King Solomon showed to the Queen of Sheba.

Option 1: Blessings Word Search

Hand out Blessings word searches and pencils. Help students, as needed, to find the blessings in the word search. Discuss each blessing and ask why students think God might bless us with that item.

Option 2: Pass the Blessing

Students form a circle. After each is given a prize, start the music. Pass the prizes around the circle until the music stops. If a student likes the prize in his hand, he may keep it and step out of the game.

An additional option will REVIEW a quarterly feature like the Special Memory Passage and Kids in Missions.

In later rounds, consider replacing with nicer prizes. For students who complain because they already opted out, explain that they chose to leave the game because they were satisfied with their prize. Continue the game until all students have a prize.

Spreading the Gospel: Investigation Station The birth of God’s church was powerful, affecting the entire Jewish nation and beyond. Missionaries carried it into pagan territories where signs, wonders, and miracles followed the believers. But as the church grew, so did problems and misunderstandings. Direction was needed. Clues for a strong, growing church were available to those who would investigate God’s Word. It is good for people to ask questions, and it is good for us to help them explore the Word and seek God.

SPREADING THE GOSPEL

The Investigation Station theme is about looking for clues and answers in the Book of Acts and Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians. Toddlers cannot investigate the way older children can investigate, but they can sort, find, match, and identify. Investigation for toddlers is all about exploring and learning new things, searching through sensory bins, matching and sorting, and discovering with magnifying glasses and other fun tools. Introduce the word blessing into their vocabulary, always associating it with tangible items. Help them begin to think beyond themselves by declaring that everything they have comes from God, and it is good to give God thanks.

Teachers welcome students with an introduction to the Bible Point, as well as take attendance and offering.

EXCITE AND ENGAGE Welcome

Welcome children and take their offering as soon as they enter the room. Let them add a fun shape (trp) to the puzzle on their attendance charts (ap) . Talk to each child as children work on their papers. I am so glad God gives us what we need. Can you thank God for giving you shoes to wear to church today?

Students are introduced to the lesson using the front page of the Activity Paper. This focuses children on the lesson objective while giving potentially messy activities time to dry.

Distribute activity papers. God gives us what we need every day. We call His gifts blessings. • What blessings do you see on this page that God gives us? As children identify items, let them color them.

Worship and Prayer lay the groundwork for the remainder of the lesson.

God gave us blessings in our bodies so we can thank Him. Sing “Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes.” Add the verse “eyes and ears, and mouth and nose.” Sing “Count Your Blessings.” Between choruses, take time to count blessings in the classroom.

Prayer

God gives us so many things! We call them blessings. They are gifts from God. Let each child retrieve one blessing from the bag of blessings and identify it. When every child has an item, encourage children to thank God for their blessings. Thank You, God, for blessing me so much!

The RELATE AND RECEIVE section opens with Memory Work, giving two options. 1. The Bible Words option simplifies the passage into an ageappropriate phrase.

RELATE AND RECEIVE At the completion of either method, allow participating children to place a Bible sticker (trp) on their memory charts (ap) .

Memory Work Bible Words: God gave us life.

Point to each word as you read it on the poster (trp). God gave us life. Show a gift bag. God gave us air to breathe. Put your face up to the bag and take a deep breath, and as you lift your face, blow the air out. God gave us life! Give each child a gift bag and lead everyone in repeating the process together, saying the Bible Words after they exhale. Let each child take a turn repeating the process in front of the class.

Bible Verse: “It is the gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 3:13).

2. The Bible Verse option quotes the verse directly from the KJV.

Point to each word as you read it on the poster (trp). What is the gift of God? It is life! God gave us life. “It is the gift of God.” Everyone take a deep breath. Now blow out the air. That is life! “It is the gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 3:13). Lead children in saying the verse and reference in short echo phrases.

Determine which option works best with your teaching method and children’s maturity.

Use the object lesson from Bible Words to help children lock this verse in their hearts and minds.

Bible Lesson: Solomon Shows His Riches (I Kings 10)

Access Prior Experience: Do you own something you like to show people when they come to your house?

The Bible Lesson is a lively telling of God’s story so children can connect it to their upcoming playtime.

As one teacher tells the story, a co-teacher distributes treasures to children to place in the treasure chest. The storyteller paces the story to match the distribution of items. Repeat phrases as necessary. Toddlers learn with repetition. Our Bible story is from I Kings 10. Point to it in the Bible. Choose a child to play the part of King Solomon and place the crown on his head. God loved King Solomon. He wanted to give King Solomon lots of blessings. Place the treasure chest next to the king. The co-teacher distributes treasures as mentioned.

Visuals from the Teacher’s Resource Packet are common tools to help the teacher tell the story.

God gave the king lots of gold. Pause as children place their treasures in the chest. God blessed the king with lots of silver. God blessed King Solomon with fancy jewels. One day, the Queen of Sheba came to visit Solomon. Choose a child to play the part of the Queen of Sheba and place the tiara on her head.

The APPLY AND ACT section presents snacks, games, crafts, activities, reading, and role-playing to help students further apply the Bible lesson and Bible Point through playtime.

King Solomon showed the queen all the blessings God had given him. Encourage the king to pull out treasures and show the queen. It was a lot to see! The queen was very happy for King Solomon. She also gave him some nice presents. Then King Solomon gave the queen some nice presents. Have the king and queen exchange the wrapped gifts. God blessed King Solomon with lots of good things to enjoy.

Since toddlers rarely focus on a task for more than five minutes, prepare several options and expect to move through them quickly. If space and staff allow, consider offering multiple activities simultaneously with a teacher assigned to each learning center, and let children rotate from option to option.

Scatter the blessing art (trp) on the table. Let each child select five blessings to color. If time allows, they may select more blessings to color. When they are done coloring, distribute the gift bags and let children color them. Show children how to place their blessings in their gift bag and add tissue paper. God gave us life. “It is the gift of God.” God gives us lots of other blessings too. Isn’t God wonderful?

Music/Movement

Place the Hula-Hoops on the floor, several feet apart. Lead children in a blessing game. Have enough hoops to accommodate the number of children. Did God bless you with a house to live in? Step into the (blue) hoop. If God has blessed you with toys, step over into the (green) hoop. If God has blessed you with a mommy or daddy, step back into the (blue) hoop. Continue in this fashion, listing blessing after blessing.
