Simplify

Dad Thoughts

LJ Harry

Scott Graham

Life gets increasingly complex. Sometimes we just need to slow down and purposefully simplify. In this weekly devotional LJ Harry calls us to stop and reflect on the Christian Life-to see the humor and to enjoy the simple pleasure of life. And in the process, we see God at work in the everyday world. Read. Pray. Reflect. Repeat.

At the start of 2013, Scott Graham decided to give his graduating children a special gift, something they could hold on to for years to come. That year he began to read the Bible through in ninety days. Each day he read three passages. He chose a daily passage from each of those sections to spotlight. From the selected verse(s) he has written “Dad Thoughts.”

prayer The first thing we do is pray. This is what we teach our children, and this is what we should practice. VBS is a tremendous opportunity to see God do the miraculous in our children and our community, so why would we start it with a planning session and not prayer? “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”(Matt. 6:33). When you put God and His will first, everything will fall into place. You are able to make decisions easier, the things that would usually stress you now seem possible, and God begins to move. Our biggest prayers should be that God would touch hearts, fill souls with His Spirit, and change lives. The other things will get done, the kids will enjoy the week, volunteers will be joyful, and you will have a wonderful time!

“People” doesn’t necessarily mean a large amount of people. Picking the right people for your VBS is an important factor. Everyone has different skills and ministry styles. Focus on getting the right people in the right positions. Someone who is animated, naturally funny, and able to keep the kids’ attention would be great to lead your VBS on stage every night. Another person who is reserved, organized, meticulous, and detailoriented might be the best fit for your registration leader. Finding the right person for the job is just as important as any other part of VBS. Learning your volunteers’ spiritual and natural skills is a great way to enhance your VBS and keep your volunteers excited to come back next year. One volunteer in the right position could eliminate the need for multiple people in the wrong position. Any church, no matter the size, can have a successful VBS. The right people will make that possible. te a Decora

The old adage applies: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” VBS is a big job and can seem overwhelming. If you look at it as a whole, it seems impossible. But planning properly by breaking down each task into smaller tasks makes it manageable. You can’t do that in just a couple of weeks. VBS takes a few months to get everything into place, and that is why we have broken down the planning for you! In our director’s guide, there is a planning calendar that breaks down all the important pieces into small chunks, spread out over time so that it will be manageable. When should you start? NOW! Now is the time you should be selecting your leaders and helpers and meeting with them to plan out what you are going to accomplish. Start with a prayer meeting and jump right in! The better you plan and prep, the better your outcome will be.

DISCIPLESHIP THE

PROJECT

Series 1: Contending for the Faith Writer: David Myers

Lifelong discipleship requires faithfulness. We are called to follow the example of those who have paved the way before us, stand for truth, and defend the faith once delivered unto the saints. This series takes your group back to principles of faithfulness and challenges us to be steadfast and unwavering.

Series 2: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob Writer: Nathan Maki

Just as God made something great out of imperfect men and women in Scripture, He desires to empower us to become who we are meant to be. This series studies Genesis to point out principles for how we can be used of God to fulfill His purpose for our lives.

Series 3: Pleasing the Lord Writer: Carlton Coon

CURRICULUM

As disciples our desire must be to live in a way that pleases the Lord. This series explores Micah 6:8 to teach what God requires. As we do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, we can enjoy the blessings that come with pleasing the Lord.

Summer Curriculum Series Start the summer off right with topics to encourage, educate, and equip your students for one low price, only at Link247.org

Back to Basics Our society questions the necessity and possibility of moral absolutes. Apostolics must believe in the existence of truth—that God and His Word are real and without fail—and they must act on that truth to work out their own salvation.

Get Social Jesus' final instruction to His disciples was to make disciples by sharing the good news of the gospel. This series invites us to get social with our faith by presenting practical tools to share the gospel with others.

Datebuster Relationships are a key part of our lives, and many myths that teens embrace about dating simply aren't true. Busting these myths about dating relationships can help us make good decisions for building meaningful, healthy relationships.

MAKING IT WORK

In this groundbreaking work on bivocational ministry, Gary Erickson estimates the majority of pastors in the United Pentecostal Church International are bivocational. In a culture where making a transition to full-time ministry is viewed as a crowning achievement, Erickson challenges us to a new appreciation for the bivocational pastor. Bivocational pastors are heroes of the faith in their unyielding commitment to God and His kingdom. This book offers a new paradigm for thinking about the importance of work and celebrating the lives of ministers who essentially work two full-time jobs. Reading it will bless and encourage bivocational pastors, and it will inspire all of us to labor for the Kingdom.

TEACHING TO TRANSFORM HEARTS LEE ANN ALEXANDER

This book makes the case for reviving the teaching ministry of the church. It challenges us to assess our current teaching methods and effectiveness. And it gives us a wealth of strategies for breathing new life into the classrooms of our churches. As we do so, we follow Jesus’ foundational call to “go therefore and make disciples . . . teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20, NKJV).

TEACHING TO TRANSFORM HEARTS Many of us can think of a teacher who transformed our lives. If we’re especially blessed, more than one or two names come to mind. But have you considered what made those teachers so outstanding? It usually isn’t a wealth of knowledge or gifted oratory. Rather, it is the personal connections these teachers make with their students. Those connections are the foundation of teaching that transforms hearts.

Living with integrity is one the most important qualities in every minister's life. Jesus Christ modeled integrity in all that He did and said. The ethical principles He demonstrated comprise the highest and best lifestyle a person can live. In this book the author explains the basis of Christian ethics, and then illustrates how we can apply those ethics so as to live with integrity in every area of our lives.

Born to a Methodist mother and Episcopalian father in 1898 and later marrying a Roman Catholic young man when she was in her teens, Ethel Mae Boyd was an unlikely candidate to become an influential Pentecostal preacher. Yet when her path led her to the powerful Apostolic ministry of Nona House, her life took a new direction. If someone had told her there would be a special anointing on her life, she would not have believed it. But one day Pastor House said, “Ethel, I’ve got to tell you something. I feel this from the Lord. God is going to use you to preach the gospel.” And preach she did. Ethel had a long and successful ministry as a street preacher, evangelist, and church planter. A few months after her husband died in 1947, she unwittingly found herself the object of Andrew Urshan’s affections. A tumultuous series of events followed, ending with Ethel Dugas becoming Ethel Urshan. Their marriage brought together two lifetimes of accumulated ministry experience, and she continued to minister to the end of her days. May her story inspire us for generations to come.

The key to significant progress toward spiritual maturity is an every day relationship with Jesus. As we seek Him, walk with Him, and define ourselves by His existence, we find fulfillment and significance. It is this revelation that bridges the divide between temporal and eternal, between randomness and a life of purpose. This book will help readers mature and grow in their relationship with Jesus.

A History of Christian Doctrine: Abridged in One Volume

Elements is a revolutionary new converts' program for the twenty-first century.

Every church wants to close the back door and retain those new to the church. We invest in outreach events to attract attention, and we work diligently to instill a culture of friendliness and connection. However, retention requires systematic teaching that grounds new people in the Word of God. Some churches have amassed materials from various sources, and still others have developed tools in-house. All of us need materials that cover Apostolic doctrine thoroughly and represent our churches credibly. That's why there's Elements.

CHURCH RESOURCES

That’s why there’s Elements.

Featuring four modules of six sessions each: Module 1 – Foundational Elements Module 2 – Transformative Elements Module 3 – Doctrinal Elements Module 4 – Lifestyle Elements 30

What’s unique about Elements?

1. Elements is built from a proven model. The material is divided into modules using the outline and courses UPCI General Superintendent David K. Bernard developed during his tenure of planting a church that launched sixteen daughter churches. 2. Elements includes a module to help those new in the faith develop life skills for overcoming the hurdles of their old lives. People come into the church with addictions, stewardship problems, and relationship turmoil. This curriculum includes a module early on to help new believers deal with life issues from a biblical perspective to establish stability. 3. Elements features a format to involve newcomers in self-discovery learning from God’s Word. Questions about key passages of God’s Word prompt those new in the faith to discover Apostolic truth for themselves rather than be handed down information from someone else—with the aim in mind for them to embrace truth permanently. 4. Elements brings a measure of excellence via first-class materials to underscore the legitimacy and credibility of your church. What we give to our newcomers speaks to the church’s image and its commitment to invest in people. You don’t want to send the wrong message with low-quality copies or a poorly presented graphic. Elements is professionally designed and printed so you can be confident you’re sending the right message of a credible church that newcomers can be proud to connect to.
