Apostolic Identity in a Postmodern World David K. Bernard In the shifting culture of our diverse, postmodern world, it is important to understand what we believe and why we believe it. What is essential to our identity as biblical Christians? What is our foundation? What makes Apostolic Pentecostals unique? In short, we believe that the teaching and practice of the apostles of Jesus Christ, as recorded in the New Testament, is the supreme authority and example for the church today. In this collection of writings, David K. Bernard’s trusted voice calls us to steadfastly adhere to the universal truth claims of apostolic faith. And in so doing, we will step into a Pentecostal future of explosive growth and unprecedented revival. 29879 Paperback $16.99 29880 Ebook $9.99

Series 1: Mary Did You Know? Writer: Eugene Wilson

This Christmas season, it’s important to turn our eyes to the savior. Lessons in this series will study the Christmas story from Mary’s perspective, drawing parallels to our lives. Like Mary we are called to ponder the promise of God until we see its fulfillment.

Series 2: Hope for the Last Days Writer: Daniel L. Segraves

Our hope is not in this world but in the promise of our soon-coming King. While many people never consider what the future holds, because Jesus promised to return for His church, we should look for His appearing. This series explores Scripture to teach the church about God’s plan for the last days and the hope we should have as a result.

Series 3: The DNA of a Disciple Writer: Jonathan Mullings

In a world where materialism and consumerism dominate the day, we are called to a different perspective. Since it is God’s will for us to be thankful, this series encourages believers of all ages to embrace an attitude of thanksgiving.

THE LIFE OF CHRIST

Create a reception desk to greet students. Make it fun, colorful, and equipped with regular desk supplies. Set up a project area where prep work is done for real life community projects: food drives for the local food pantry require tables and boxes (assign volunteers to sort the food), clothing or shoe drives for a local shelter demand an area for packing items (ask volunteers to track incoming inventory), or raise funds for a local charity with a kids’ rummage sale or lemonade stand. The project possibilities are endless. In one corner of the room, create an art center. Provide supplies and encourage students to draw pictures or write cards that can be mailed or delivered to senior centers, children’s hospitals, or homeless shelters. Fill another corner with items to prepare care kits for the homeless. Decorate a volunteer board and spotlight several volunteers each unit. Have fun showing students how to present Jesus to the community as they live their motto: We Care!

WINTER 19–20

During the spring quarter, students will examine the life of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The lessons begin with the early years of Jesus, continue through His ministry, and conclude with His death, burial, and resurrection. Students will investigate the Incarnation, the examples Jesus provided, and the parables Jesus taught. Activities and life applications will help students develop habits of prayer and attitudes of Christian service. A community service theme reinforces the scope of the quarter’s lessons.

The SmileyFace Kids want to put a smile on their neighbor’s face. These kids are looking for opportunities to bless and serve others. Their signature symbol is a smiley face, proving they can help others with a smile. Doing small chores around the house, sprucing up the yard for spring, and sending a smiley-face note to those who are less fortunate allow them to give back and give Jesus to their community.

To prepare for the WeCare Project, search Pinterest and the internet for kid volunteer ideas—numerous service projects are described and will inspire your creativity. Make your classroom the WeCare community volunteer center where students become official volunteers with WeCare Project name tags and volunteer sign in sheets. Cover the walls with posters describing and tracking the projects students will participate in during the quarter. THE LIFE OF CHRIST

The Life of Christ

The SmileyFace Kids

The life of Christ made an impact. He walked among people. He taught. He loved. He gave. This quarter your students will learn how to touch others’ lives as they study the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. While practicing the life principles taught by Jesus, they will show love and compassion through community service projects.

Community volunteers participate in service projects that help others and create neighborly kindness. As your students participate in the WeCare Project, they will learn the joy that comes from serving and making a difference in others’ lives.

Calling all handy helpers! Someone is in trouble and needs our help. Jesus has come to save the day and the soul, but He needs our help to let the whole world know. Our serving Savior is looking for caring kids, just like you, who will do what it takes to spread the good news. Jesus died on the cross to save our souls. He was buried for three days; then He rose from the grave. If you do not know what to do, that is no problem at all. We will follow Jesus through His early years. He is our perfect example of how to act, what to say, who to love, and how to pray.

Winter Unit Topics: When the World Needed Jesus A Happy New You Potholes

This winter youth will begin with the timeless story of Jesus’ birth from the Gospels. January will feature “A Happy New You” unit to help students make choices and commitments that produce lasting change in their lives. The quarter will then conclude with a study of Rehoboam and how his decisions led to a divided kingdom and the destruction of his own soul, challenging students to learn how to avoid those same pitfalls and instead achieve their purpose in the kingdom of God.

Enduring Faith Hebrews God is calling us to have enduring faith—faith that will last the test of time. No matter the trial, the test, or the temptation, if we will cling to our faith, God will come through; He will never fail. Where we place our faith will ultimately determine how long our faith will endure. This quarter studies the Book of Hebrews to help us root and ground our faith in Jesus Christ.

is a revolutionary new convert's program for the twenty-first century.

Every church wants to close the back door and retain those new to the church. We invest in outreach events to attract attention, and we work diligently to instill a culture of friendliness and connection. However, retention requires systematic teaching that grounds new people in the Word of God. Some churches have amassed materials from various sources, and still others have developed tools in-house. All of us need materials that cover Apostolic doctrine thoroughly and represent our churches credibly.

That’s why there’s Elements.

Featuring four modules of six sessions each: Module 1 – Foundational Elements Module 2 – Transformative Elements Module 3 – Doctrinal Elements Module 4 – Lifestyle Elements 22

Winter 2019-20 Catalog.indd 22

9/10/19 12:13 PM

What’s unique about Elements?

1. Elements is built from a proven model. The material is divided into modules using the outline and courses UPCI General Superintendent David K. Bernard developed during his tenure of planting a church that launched sixteen daughter churches.

Shipping January 2020

2. Elements includes a module to help those new in the faith develop life skills for overcoming the hurdles of their old lives. People come into the church with addictions, stewardship problems, and relationship turmoil. This curriculum includes a module early on to help new believers deal with life issues from a biblical perspective to establish stability.

3. Elements features a format to involve newcomers in self-discovery learning from God’s Word. Questions about key passages of God’s Word prompt those new in the faith to discover Apostolic truth for themselves rather than be handed down information from someone else—with the aim in mind for them to embrace truth permanently. 4. Elements brings a measure of excellence via first-class materials to underscore the legitimacy and credibility of your church. What we give to our newcomers speaks to the church’s image and its commitment to invest in people. You don’t want to send the wrong message with low-quality copies or a poorly presented graphic. Elements is professionally designed and printed so you can be confident you’re sending the right message of a credible church that newcomers can be proud to connect to.

He concisely discusses overarching themes in these books, including the conquest of the land, the restoration of the cry in Israel, and the building, destruction, and reconstruction of the Temple. In addition, he uses his expertise in biblical Hebrew to expand our understanding of various Hebrew words. And he provides new ideas for teaching and preaching from selected Scripture passages from these books.

Handbook on the Prohphets

In this volume, Jeremy Painter plumbs the depth and traverses the wide range of emotional and theological content of the five poetic books of wisdom literature. The author explores the intricate complexity of questions of suffering in Job, the praises and laments of Psalms, the wisdom of Proverbs, and concludes with clear and purposeful readings of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon. We are not always provided easy answers while reading these books of the Bible, but this handbook serves as a kind of tour guide to lead us along the path.

Handbook on the Historical Books

In this volume, Chris Paris surveys the Pentateuch from both literary and theological viewpoints, and introduces us to literary techniques such as type scenes, recurring motifs, and irony. Becoming aware of these techniques produces a reading of the text that deepens our appreciation for the God behind the text. In addition, beyond a perfunctory or ceremonial approach to books such as Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, the author helps us to see how ethical principles in these writings apply to our lives today.

In this handbook, the author “thoroughly examines how we should read and study Acts so as to comprehend and fulfill the purposes for which God has given it to the church. Employing concepts in contemporary scholarship, the author has written in a way that is understandable to all students of the Bible. This handbook is an excellent introduction to the significance, meaning, and content of an important portion of the Word of God. Handbook on the Epistles of Paul

In this volume, Jeremy Painter gives a brief overview of the life of Paul and the theological themes found in his writings. As he works through Paul’s epistles in canonical order, his commentary provides clear explanation of complex ideas and brief asides of cultural and historical interest. This book will not only help you better understand the letters of Paul, but it will also deepen your faith.

Handbook on the Gospels

Have you ever wondered what the Bible would look like if it were written today? It probably wouldn’t have four Gospel accounts. In this volume, Jeffrey Brickle offers the opinion that harmonization of the four Gospel accounts into one volume would do the church a great disservice. The author takes us on a journey of multiple expeditions throughout the ancient Near East and introduces us to a cast of characters who were instrumental in preserving the story of Jesus. Although the tone is conversational, the scholarship underlying the conversation is robust.

Handbook on the Gospels

Somewhere between a verse-by-verse commentary and the Apostolic Study Bible, the Apostolic Handbook Series brings a two- to four-thousand-year-old text to life with fresh application to our lives and the church today. You will find insights on the culture, language, and history of Israel, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the church of the first century, all thoroughly grounded by Apostolic writers.

Jeremy Painter (DLitt, University of Pretoria; PhD Candidate, University of Radboud, Nijmegen, Netherlands) is assistant professor of English and communication arts at Regent University. He has served as an associate pastor and as Washington District youth president. He lives with his wife, Laura, and their three children in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Jeffrey Brickle provides us with an understanding of the individual features of each Gospel, the grand themes running through all of the Gospels, and a host of tools to enhance our understanding of these books.

Jeremy Painter briefly introduces theological themes found in Paul’s letters. His commentary provides clear explanation of complex ideas and brief asides of cultural and historical interest.

The Book of Acts is foundational for an Apostolic understanding of Scripture. In this handbook, Robin Johnston combines the clarity of a historian with the practical wisdom of a church planter and pastor as he explores the narratives and theology in the Book of Acts.
