Paper Houses by Shigeru Ban Architects

Known for his ‘Humanitarian Design’, Shigeru Ban used economic, available paper tubes assembled by the displaced volunteers of the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan. Materials were donated by companies.

The concept and design was adapted for similar rehabilitation quick assemblies in China, India, Hawai, Rwanga (Africa) etc. according to climate, resources, people skills.

RAAS Jodhpur Studio Lotus “Age-old materials and skills are manifested as a modern and understated graphic form derived from multiple functional and programmatic parameters.

Crafted by over a 100 regional artisans and master-craftsmen, the building and its interiors use sustainable architecture fundamentals.

“A lot of the craftsmen did not know how to read drawings, and as work went along, they contributed in the emergence of the final form of the project which meant that most decisions on the drawing board had to be relooked at concurrently with site work. In addition, the location of the site in the walled city made material transportation a big challenge.

Lastly, the fact that it was a ‘first’ project for us, the design team and the owners, meant that we made several mistakes as we went along, which in hindsight could have been avoided but which also contributed to some of the audacious moves we collectively made!” -Ambrish Arora, Studio Lotus

Devi Ratn, Aniket Bhagwat “The forms and shapes that are used as a part of the architecture are simple, and reminiscent of those that are a regular feature of Rajasthani architecture. Apart from incorporating forms that are influenced by the architecture of Jantar Mantar, the design is also composed of more basic forms – circles, and squares.”

“While the architecture constantly makes references to the various features of Rajasthani design, it is the design details that set the space apart. The latticework, that is so prototypical to Rajasthani architecture is a feature that can be seen in various spaces. In its entirety the hotel seems to be a contained representation of Rajasthan; a true incorporation of the traditional with the modern.

Imagine Studio at the Trees, Studio Lotus “The intent was to illustrate an invigorated public realm as a microcosm of the master plan while preserving the essence of the site’s industrial heritage. Existing buildings and its elements were recycled not only to underline their relevance in the bygone eras but also add meaning as important design punctuations in the narrative. The buzzing public spaces will eventually extend the edge of the gated development to include the community and city in its activities.

While Concrete indicates the existing shell work, Corten Steel reinterprets the idea of the original form, which over a period of time bleeds over Concrete. Programmatically the buildings of the Imagine Studio currently adapt into a marketing office, with sample showcase flats, meeting spaces, a small cafe, as well as several outdoor spaces to market upcoming residential and commercial development properties.

The storyline for this experiential journey was grounded in authenticity and a larger vision for the city germinated with timeless values. The timeless architectural forms derived from the current industrial sheds and the materiality of Concrete, Corten steel, Brass and Timber work on the principle of ‘Wabi-Sabi’, which would allow the buildings to age beautifully with the passage of time. The materials were deliberately chosen to add layers to the sequence of events planned for the project.

World Trade Centre - Oculus, NYC by Santiago Calatrava : Architects & Engineers Santiago Calatrava’s work explores the significance of place and its human context by considering both topographical and cultural landscapes. In this sense, Calatrava believes that it is fundamental to form a relationship – a feeling and sense of spirituality – with a physical site.

In the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, Calatrava was commissioned to build a new transit hub that connected PATH trains from New Jersey with New York City’s subway system.

How to integrate the inputs / method/ processes/ technologies, etc‌ within the context of interior design? Input:

Creating Experience

Ideas From context Interpretation & Development of concept

Method:

Analyzing Needs of the user

Detailing For Manufacturing/ Construction Site Supervision

Deriving Spatial impact on the user Feasibility & Functionality

One way is to develop design process derived by sequencing the method adapted to integrate each input received from the site. The method sequence is then layered with the aids of technology to actualise the inputs into a spatial outcome.

What can be other ways to integrate all?

Developing Programme

Details & Tactility

Visual Language

Sequence & Space Narrative

How do you evaluate these integrations?
