Last year I felt that I was about to lose my shine. After almost 18 years of living, breathing and working with RICE, I suddenly felt that I needed a time out. I made a quick decision and took a creative break for 3 months.

This new Autumn Winter 2017 collection is the result of several months of pictures taken and museum visits during my time out. It was a very inspirational few months. Actually enough to fill the next collection as well... But more on this for Spring Summer 2018…

What we really love at RICE is making products that make you smile, the little things that add a touch of magic and color to a grey day. It just makes sense to us.

We truly believe in colors and their ability to lift you up – even the darker colors are playing a strong role at the moment. Dark blue is one of our darlings, it seems to enhance and make pastels stand out.

Raffia is a natural product, it comes from palm fronds and our products are handmade in Madagascar, where raffia thrives very well. The quality of RICE melamine is the highest available and contains no BPA or phthalates. We put a lot of pride into our work and our products, and it is important to us that we use the very best materials.

Every year RICE takes an active part in developing projects and relief work all over the world. We have a saying: No one can help everyone, but everyone

can help someone. Social responsibility is a part of the RICE DNA and it is important for us to take responsibility and help make a change. We believe in a better world – and we are working hard to make a difference.

RICE was founded back in 1998 by Charlotte and Philippe Guéniau. They wanted to wrap the world in color – a success that just keeps on going. So, many people ask us: Why are you named RICE? Well, our very first raffia product was made in Madagascar, and many people in Madagascar receive a bag of rice as part of their salary. RICE is also a basic food item and in many countries it is vital for survival. That is why the name appealed to us…

A cabinet de curiosité must contain a mix of old and new…

Colorful, quirky, fun, and elegant…

Spotted in the lovely Pullmann Hotel in Amsterdam.

This lovely kitty cookie jar can hold so much more than just cookies. Secrets... or cotton buds… whatever you feel like. 25 cm tall... and a collectors item…. each year a new shape…

Cabinet de curiosité...

- is the name of a Renaissance cabinet that became very popular in the 18th century. At that time the fashion was to mix an eclectic selection of items. You had to show off your best pieces... treasures brought home from the colonies or small art objects from around the World. Elegant souvenirs, expensive silver… perhaps a fossil or a small hunting trophy.

All of it is pure eye candy and a matter of showing off a certaint style and classy taste.

My Grandmother had a beautiful mahogany piece of furniture - she called it ‘the bragging cupboard’.

I always loved to look at all the intriguing items that held so many wonderful stories which she was always willing to share.

We believe in a come-back for this type of styling, a wonderful mix of old and new, shiny and colorful, dark and mysterious. Do it for you... no need to brag, just for yourself and “le plaisir des yeux” - to please your eyes…

Personally I love this kind of overwhelming styling from time to time, not all over - but in a few selected areas of my home.

Inspiration Cabinet de Curiosité

This shelf is next to my bed - a fabulous mix of new and old, a cactus and some precious stones that I sometimes like to hold in my hands if I have trouble sleeping...

Ganesha is also sitting guard there - to protect me and help me overcome certain obstacles.

FACT:

Dating all the way back to the 6th century, the elephant god Ganesha is a very popular figure in Indian art. He may be portrayed standing, dancing, heroically taking action against demons, playing with his family as a boy, sitting down or on an elevated seat, or engaging in a range of contemporary situations. He protects, and helps to remove obstacles - so I am happy to have him next to me every night.

I also have a very large rose quartz crystal that I have bought in Madagascar - see I do brag a bit about my shelf of curiosities... rose quartz is a crystal that derives its name from its lovely rose pink color.

It is known as the 'love stone' as the message it emits is a strong vibration of unconditional love, joy, warmth and emotional healing. It opens your heart and protects you from negative vibrations, reduces stress and encourages a calm demeanor… not bad!

We have a new passionate love affair with blue, especially dark blue has caught our attention and attracted us for a while… it is the perfect contrast to our colorful world. It suits it so well and gives our universe power and strength.

New Melamine Snowdrops

Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale - THE SNOWDROP - says it all...

This is a small extract: "Welcome! Welcome!" sang and rang out every sunbeam as the flower rose above the snow, out into the world of light. The sunbeams caressed and kissed it, so that it opened itself fully, white as snow and adorned with green stripes. It bowed its head in happiness and humility.

Snowdrops are an icon of strength… and really represent SHINE the way we love it… the first flower that pushes through the frosty earth and sticks its soft delicate smiley face out to us… knowing that each year there will be more frost - nothing stops this gracious flower from dancing in the wind and cold.

We have allocated a whole story to this beauty - and to soft pink as well.

We sometimes say GO PINK OR GO HOME… This ultra-feminine color never goes out of style, and is always part of the fashion world as well.

Cool down pink...

A few months ago I was inter-

viewed by a really lovely German lady, Kathrin Haller, for a book she was working on. We got to talk about colors and their power. She told me about a prison in Switzerland that had experimented with pink cool down prison cells, where everything was pink. These pink cells were used for violent and agitated inmates. It was proven that after 10 minutes of being in the pink cell blood pressure and heart rate lowered significantly.

In the late 1960s, Alexander Schauss, Director of Life Sciences at the American Institute for Biosocial Research in Tacoma, Washington, did studies on psychological and physio­ logical responses to the color pink.

Schauss measured that this color - at the time named Baker-Miller pink had an amazing effect on people.

And in early tests in 1978, Schauss observed that being in certain colored rooms surprisingly, did affect muscle strength, either invigorating or enervating the subject, and even influenced the cardiovascular system.

I decided to put the research into play… and had my gym/yoga room painted pink all over… I can tell you it works...

New Melamine Swooning Swans

Ohhhhh to be a beautiful swan...

We are inspired by swans this season - probably quite logical, since RICE is based in Odense, the home town of the great fairy tale king Hans Christian Andersen... Thanks to this fairy tale about the ugly duckling, the mute swan is now our national bird in Denmark.

There is something touching about this ugly duckling that suddenly rises and becomes a beautiful admired swan‌ If you read it you will find that there are many valuable lessons to be learned from it.

You should come visit us in Odense - have a look at Hans Christian Andersen's museum and afterwards swing by and sip a nice cup of tea in a pink chair in our beautiful flagship store RICETERIA, only a few minutes away from the museum.

Scientifically proven At RICE we were contacted by a bunch of researchers from Aarhus University - they have spent time investigating what the color of your plate does for you mind and soul. For example, children who are very ill and have difficulties eating, were inspired to eat more if food was served on a colorful plate - the results were so interesting. We know for sure that it is not only about making your stomach happy, but also to throw a party for you eyes…

How To: Preheat the oven to 150o C (300o F). In a bowl, whip the butter and sugar until airy and light. Stir in the eggs one by one.

In another bowl combine cocoa, fruit coloring, vanilla extract and buttermilk and mix well. Strain the flour making it neat and fine. Take half of the buttermilk mixture and add it to the batter, then add half of the flour. Add the remaining buttermilk mixture and flour. Mix vinegar and baking soda in a small dish and stir it into the batter. Make sure to mix the batter well - divide it and pour it into three buttered spring form pans.

Bake 25 minutes.

Let the cake layers cool off while you prepare the frosting.

Whip butter and powdered sugar into a sand-like mass.

Add all of the cream cheese and whip it light and airy – whip up to five minutes. Spread the frosting between the cake layers and be generous with it on top too. Your colorful and delicious cake is ready to be devoured…

Cook together - play together - stay together...

I believe in getting together - doing things together, cooking together… I even wrote a book about it. Happy Cooking with friends and family. Invite friends over for a fun pizza night. It is one of my favorite ways to spend an evening.

Invite your friends over for a fun "build your own pizza night". You need to do the shopping beforehand, a bit of chopping - prepare the dough, but when your guests arrive, they become the master chefs, everybody makes their own pizza, and you are free to sip a glass of wine and be a guest at your own party.

When my kids were smaller we would make competitions, everyone told their thoughts and dreams behind their pizza, we tasted and gave points. It was loads of fun.

If you want to keep it more simple, then just make the pizzas together and watch a great movie.

Dough for 6 pizzas: 650 g (1lb) strong white flour 7 g (3 oz) sachet easy-blend yeast 2 tsp salt 25 ml (1 fl oz) olive oil 365 ml (13 fl oz) warm water Topping for 1 pizza: 1dl / ½ cup pizza sauce 1 red onion thinly sliced 2 figs sliced 1 ball of really nice buffalo mozzarella 1 chili thinly sliced Topping for 1 pizza: 1dl / ½ cup pizza sauce 150gr / 5 oz brie thinly sliced 6 slices of parma ham 10 red and yellow cherry tomatoes cut in halves Fresh basil

pizza recipe Mix the flour, yeast and salt in a large bowl and stir in the olive oil.

Slowly add the water, mixing to form a soft dough. Knead for 10 minutes. Cover with a cloth and leave to rise for 2 hours.

Knead again and shape into balls ready for your guests to roll out.

Spread the sauce all over the pizza base. Add your favorite topping.

For one pizza add the figs, onion slices and mozzarella. Sprinkle the chili on top. On another add the Parma ham, halved tomatoes and thinly sliced brie.

Bake for 10 – 15 minutes at 250o C / 500o F

Marshmallows • Straws • Chocolate • Edible eyes and lips/ moustache • Sprinkles • Baking paper • Knife/spoon 1. Melt the chocolate in a water bath.

2. Stick a straw into the marshmallow – almost the entire way through.

3. Dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate. Use a spoon or a knife to spread the chocolate so it covers the marshmallow evenly.

Make sure the layer isn’t too thick.

4. Give your marshmallow hair by dipping it in sprinkles.

The kitchen in our house is like a magnet. That is the place

where we hang out when we have people over, and most things gravitate around it. When we are just the family - it is still a favorite hang-out spot.

I often say that when I am happy I cook. It is true that when I am in a good place I feel like cooking. But the opposite also works for me. On days where things are really not looking the best, if I flick through my large stack of cook books and just force myself a bit - that brings me joy. Cooking is therapy for me - it makes me wind down and feel grounded. It would probably be better for my waistline if running was my thing...

The kitchen is my comfort zone‌ we have this open house open table policy, and I always love having a few extra guests, especially the spontaneous visits. This is probably one of the reasons why kitchen items take up so much of our collection.

The kitchen is probably the essence of what RICE stands for - it is the colorful functional items - the durable good looking bowls, plates and spatulas.

In my kitchen I only have things that I like to look at and like to use.

Since day 1 with RICE we have worked in Madagascar - you could say we grew up with our suppliers there. We still work with the same people we met there 19 years ago.

The very first basket was a toy basket made to fit into my 4 months old sons play room.

He will turn 19 this Summer, and I know this basket will always be a big part of our lives, and of his. For sure he will get a big pile of them the day he moves into his own place.

“I would be really sad if I had to live without color, and I love inspiring others to be more colorful. It’s all about ‘le Plaisir des yeux’ – pleasure for the eyes. When we were living in Paris, I decided our apartment needed a change. So while Philippe was away on business, I painted the entire place myself. I painted night and day with music playing really loud. Philippe was very surprised and excited when he came back – but I had painted the place in such a hurry that the result was quite spotty and patchy. I haven’t painted since…

WHAT DO YOU DREAM OF?

I dream of having a magic wand - where I could wrap the world in colors and RICE. I could use it at a hospital, at the hairdressers, my nail bar… Everywhere really - you name it, and I will whip up a colorful world in no time.

WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT AT YOUR HOUSE?

Nothing is for show - everything is in use. Our house is decorated in a very functional manner, but we of course have personal and decorative knick-knacks too. Everyday life is very busy at the house with kids, dogs and a business to run, and therefore it is important that things just work. We need to be able to relax and fling us on whatever is closest at the end of the day.

HOW DOES ONE GET A PERSONAL SENSE OF DÉCOR?

You need to define your own needs and likes - if you want a personal look. You must be brave and step out of the catalogue look. To me a personal look is a mix of our family heirlooms from both my husband’s French family and my Danish inheritance, together with the newer things we have collected over time. Last but not least, stay a bit playful in your décor - don’t worry so much about painting a wall in one color or putting wallpaper up. It‘s not dangerous… and it gives loads of energy to your home when you change looks and style regularly.

We had our first melamine collection in 2002 - that is 15 years ago... We started with cups, a bowl - and a tiered large lunch box. Since then it has taken a bigger and bigger place in our collection.

My life and the lives of so many people would be a lot less fun without melamine. It is the essence of what we love - it is practical, colorful, - fun, shiny... and so incredibly durable.

We would like to share all there is to know about our products – how they are made and how to take good care of them. This way you will be able to enjoy them for a long time!

FOOD SAFETY Many of our products are intended for food and beverages, and it is our great honor and commitment to stay on top of the latest rules and regulations. We ensure this by using international testing agencies who work independently from our suppliers and this way we guarantee all products are tested according to FDA and EU regulations.

Good to know: use and care symbols: We want to make it as easy as possible for you to know how to handle our products. The following symbols occur either as a back stamp on the product or as a sticker.

THE ORIGINAL RICE MELAMINE We love the material and the many possibilities it holds, and it truly embraces the cornerstone of our philosophy; Fun, Funky and Functional.

The quality of RICE melamine is the highest available and this is of great importance to us. You can identify RICE melamine products by the hologram sticker stating this is the Original RICE Quality. So look out for our ‘Original RICE Quality’ sticker to be sure to get the very best quality.

Melamine can break if exposed to hard shock - please check for cracks and discard the product if any is found.

Over time, melamine products can age and obtain a matte finish – products with a very matte finish should be discarded.

We recommend to always wash your melamine product before use.

Please note...

Our lovely tall cups (melcu-L...) are only suitable for drinks up to max 70°, so do not use it for boiling water.

RICE cake forks as well as latte-, table-, and teaspoons are only recommended for children above the age of 3.

For babies we recommend the cute RICE kid’s cutlery!

CERAMICS A beautiful selection of handmade ceramics made in Portugal. We call it earthenware and stoneware.

Earthenware Our beautiful ceramic tableware in nice bright colors is made of earthenware. Earthenware will chip when roughly handled, so handle with care.

Stoneware RICE oven dishes are made of stoneware. Please don’t expose the oven dishes to more than 240° Celsius. Our recommendation is to never put the oven dishes straight from the freezer and into the oven as the thermal shock might cause it to crack.

The glazing is a fine process and on some items you will find small irregularities shown as holes in the glazing. This presents no danger to the durability of the product.

When buying beautiful handmade ceramics, you will note that over time small cracks might appear in the surface – we actually believe that this makes every piece unique…

PLASTIC Food boxes, containers, food keepers, and plastic boxes… it goes by many names! All RICE products intended for food and beverages are of course free from phthalates and BPA. This means that you can safely use all these products for your kids… and for everyone else!

Some plastic products are suitable for the microwave, but it is clearly stated on each product • Most plastic products are suitable for dishwasher, but please note that some products need to be placed on top shelf – this is clearly stated on each products •

Over time plastic products can age and might crack and fade, and obtain a matte finish… We recommend to discard the product if this occurs.

RAFFIA We have a large selection of raffia products. Raffia fibers come from palm fronds which truly thrive on Madagascar.

The raffia products are all handmade. Raffia varies in color from nature and this variation is reflected in the coloring. This means two baskets are never quite alike - this is part of the product’s charm.

FURNITURE Our RICE furniture is made in Europe – and made to order. If you are interested in buying our wonderful furniture contact your RICE Sales Manager.

Materials: The feet of the furniture are made of oak painted with acrylic enamel.

We dye the raffia with Basic Dye, which is free from AZO. If constantly exposed to sunlight, the colors will fade. Also the color can rub off if the product becomes, so we recommend you to handle every piece with love and care.

The wheels are made of chrome-plated brass.

The base of the chair is made of pine wood and chipboard.

The stuffing of the chair is VP 25 foam on the backside and arm rests and fiberfill on the seating surface.

Our furniture is produced in two different kinds of textile. Both kinds are treated with nano protection: • Microfiber: 70% Polyester, 30% Poliamid

• 90% Polyester, 10% Nylon

WOODEN PRODUCTS We just love wood combined with colors! We use different kinds of wood for our products, and all of them have to be washed by hand. This means that wooden RICE products are not dishwasher safe.

For extra care: Oiling your wooden product helps it fend off odors and stains, and it makes it easier to wash.

Stain removal When cleaning the fabric of stains, we recommend you to use a kitchen towel. Use hot water with non-colored soap and remove the stain by rubbing it in a circular motion with a brush or cloth. Remember to always rub inwards so the stain does not spread. Wipe off with a clean cloth until it is dry and brush the fabric so the pile rises again.

CUPS OF HOPE

Clean water is essential for the survival and development of children.

Today, 663 million do not have access to improved water sources, and the lives of these children are at risk. UNICEF responds and provides emergency relief to those in need! Working in more than 190 countries worldwide, UNICEF yearly provides millions with clean water and better sanitation services. RICE supports UNICEF’s work in emergencies. Part of this effort involves providing clean water to children in crisis situations all over the world. The aim of Cups of Hope is to give hope to children in need.

For every Cups of Hope you buy, together we support UNICEF’s work in emergencies with a donation of EUR 1,5. With EUR 1,5 UNICEF can provide 800 L of clean water to children in need.

Corporate Social Responsibility is a vital part of the RICE DNA. It is important to us, that you can color yourself happy with a clear conscience.

Over the years RICE has engaged in several projects formed from the belief that:

“No one can help everyone – but everyone can help someone” LITTLE BOX OF HOPE

Last year we supported the Red Cross and the work they do worldwide for the refugees across the globe. We strongly believe in the effort of improving the lives of people on the run , and the aim of the LITTLE BOX OF HOPE food kit was to give hope to the people in need. We wished that the LITTLE BOX OF HOPE would create awareness of the refugees and encourage people to take action. For every food kit (6 funky foodboxes and 6 colorful spoons) sold, we donated 1,5 EUR to the Red Cross.

SEND ME TO SCHOOL

DANISH HOSPITAL CLOWNS PROJECT

By designing a special cup and plate, RICE provides a financial contribution to the Danish Hospital Clowns. Their task is to make the hospitalization for kids a little easier to get through. Humor and close personal presence make room for hapiness and allow the kids to be “just kids”, in spite of being seriously ill. We also donated RICE play kits for 27 pediatric wards in Danish Hospitals.

SPOON FULL OF HOPE

RICE launched the gift idea, “Spoon Full of Hope” in cooperation with the Danish Refugee Council. Each spoon sold donated a cooking set to a family on the run in Darfur and Somalia.

In 2008 the cyclone Nargis hit the south west part of Myanmar – leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. By making a range of kids products we raised enough money to build a school so kids could get back in the classrooms – improving their future chances of education.

The school also functions as a shelter for the entire community in case of natural disasters.

JHEEL - JAIPUR

CUPS FULL OF HOPE

4 melamine drinking cups, specially designed by RICE for this project. Every time a pack of these cups was sold, a refugee family in Africa received a Water and Washing Kit.

LAKSHYA

RICE entered a three year project, in cooperation with Danida to improve conditions for the workers in the factory.

Now the conditions comply with SA8000 standards.

Environmental responsibility has also been of concern to the supplier and they have constructed a wastewater cleaning system reducing the environmental impact.

Our cooperation with our supplier Lakshya, started out as a three years development project for street children. The goal was to build a production supporting an orphanage for street children.

During the project RICE donated a monthly amount of financial support and placed orders regularly. The establishment of Lakshya secured an education for the New Delhi street children, as well as housing and the opportunity to remain in Lakshya as employees.

SAFE CHILDHOOD IN VIETNAM

We have helped sponsor an educational program that teaches children how to tackle and avoid explosives still remaining in the ground after the Vietnam War. The project was run by The Danish Refugee Council. Giving children in Vietnam a safe childhood was our way of celebrating the 25th. Anniversary of Convention on the Rights of the Child in 2014.

SPOON FULL OF HOPE II We redesigned the Spoon full of Hope and this time the sale of one spoon equaled 24 servings of soup. We sold 3752 spoons.

SPOON FULL OF HOPE III The latest cooperation with the Danish Refugee Council is yet another spoon.

With this spoon we helped provide clean water for 10 refugees in Africa for 28 days!
