n color we trust... These words are not just words. I actually do trust in colors; the power they have in the world and the effect they have on our moods. If only we had a dollar for every time someone said “you can't be in a bad mood in these surroundings” or similar comments about our rice headquarters, our fair stands and our homes – we would have quite a booming bank account, only from compliments about our colors.......

elcome to our MAGALOGUE! A wonderful mix of a magazine and catalogue. We have sooooooo much to tell you at the moment - it is actually hard to contain so much joy and excitement, so please make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee, sit back in your favorite chair and enjoy the read. As always we give tribute to color, but this time we also look back and remember how sweet it is to be just 16. The wonderful adolescent age where life is up for grabs, fun is all around and worries belong to tomorrow… This is also how we like to roll! We are celebrating life, and my 2 babies born within the same year. Max and Rice. They have both grown into lovely independent individuals with a lot of potential lurking under the surface…just ready to unfold. And both have fundamentally changed my life in a very lovely way. I n house model, and company favorite dog Has recently become big sister to a very naughty little black puppy named Luna. Rosa grew up at rice - and absolutely loves coming to the office. Her favorite products of all times were some felt Christmas Balls that she had the best time playing with, chewing and throwing around the office.

Mitzi "Polka Dot" - Perfect age Product Development Assistant Mitzi is miss 'eye for details' at rice – she works next to Charlotte and is deeply involved with all products. You can wake her up at any time and she can remember pantone numbers from several seasons ago... If you leave her alone for too long, she will change the entire collection into POLKA DOTS. So no need to ask for her favorite product of the season... just check page 82.

ast but not least - please welcome our newborn baby project - RICETERIA. A dream come true...... Our very first opening of a mix of shop and cafe – read more on page 36. An old friend of mine from Paris once said to me, just after giving birth to her first son “it is not because he is my son - but my GOD he is exceptionally beautiful”. This still makes me laugh today. Through a Mothers eyes babies are so beautifully tinted. But I have to say in all honesty... The RICETERIA..... it is not because it is my latest baby - my dream come true.... but my GOD it is one exceptionally fine project!!!

hhhhh to be sweet sixteen again... This magalogue is a tribute to being sixteen. I am hopeless with numbers – they really do not mean much to me and I forget them as fast as I hear or read them. I sincerly have very deep age acceptance issues. I honestly feel very young and go through stages where I suffer a bit from age-envy. I am working on it... don't worry.

But for some strange reason 16 is a number that I remember well. When I was sixteen, I was in Australia for one year – living with my amazing Uncle and Aunt as a kind of exchange student. I recall feeling sad about turning seventeen.... All songs are about being sweet sixteen, she was only sixteen etc.... nothing about 17.... and really nothing at all about being 48... But IN COLOR WE TRUST, in life we trust and no one stops you from throwing a sweet sixteen years party no matter what age you have.

When your guests arrive and the mood is already festive with balloons and garlands, it makes everyone feel welcome and wanted. It really lifts the spirit and the feeling of love in the room. In my next life I want to be a party planner. I really enjoy planning and plotting â&#x20AC;&#x201C; organizing and decorating.

Every year I say to myself - I am going to watch the arrival of spring every single day - enjoy the return of the light every second of it. I have said the same in regards to my children. I want to enjoy every minute - watch them grow and unfold their personalities. Spend as much time with them as possible. I have watched - and enjoyed - and yet it is still crazy that this little boy in the basket is the same young man as the one on the opposite page. Melamine plays a big role at RICE. We love this material and have had melamine in our collection for the past 12 years – and we keep expanding our range of melamine products. It is an amazing material that truly embraces the cornerstones of our philosophy; Fun, Funky and Functional Everyday Magic!

elamine was found in many homes from the 40’s through to the 70’s, and due to its durable nature, vintage items are still quite easy to find. Ceramic and porcelain tableware took over the cupboards in most homes. When we launched our first melamine products back in 2003, people could only see it for outdoor use and camping trips at first but slowly it sneaked its way back into a lot of homes. Moms were some of the first to spot the potential of melamine... great for kids. Cups that didn’t break easily and were nice for the ever color-hungry kids to look at. Plates that wouldn’t smash to smithereens when dropped on the floor…. and all of it in bright and happy colors. Over the years we have moved from just a few basic items into an enormous variety of melamine products. Bright colors, pastel colors, printed, two-toned… Small cups, big cups, plates in every shape and size, serving dishes, food storage, jugs and lots of spoons…You name it.

Many people think of us when they see these melamine cups.We started with 5 colors, but now we have a complete rainbow of colors…

melamine facts The melamine products are made by pressing and heating the raw material in a mold. The pressing process is almost the only part that is made by machine. Opposed to what most people think, melamine products require a lot of manual handling. The creation of a two-toned melamine cup with print involves at least 3 people: Raw material measuring and pressing process. Polishing is all done by hand. Finally the cup is being manually packed into boxes and ready for shipping. Production time minimum 6 min. per cup.

Why did you choose to work for ’Danish Hospital Clowns’? A seriously ill child who is fighting for its life is probably the worst thing imaginable. I hope that my work will help to make life a little easier for kids going through long term hospitalization. What is you biggest/best/wildest experience with the clowns? I know a lot of stories about Hospital Clowns who have cried, held hands and been there when things have been tough and painful. But I have also seen a clown eating an entire cream puff layer cake…. the things you do to bring out a smile.

Do you believe in Everyday Magic? I do! The small unexpected experience that just happens out of seemingly nowhere and the amazing magical value of a smile... What is your favorite color? I am quite crazy about green. What is the goal for the organization in 5 years from now? In 5 years we have enough manpower, resources and support to help every child who can benefit from a Hospital Clown.

• The organization currently employs 26 professionally trained Hospital Clowns, who visit pediatric wards all over Denmark. • In 2014 the organization enrolled 5 Hospital Clown apprentices. All expected to complete their training mid-2015. • It takes one year to be come a fully trained Hospital Clown. The edu cation consists of both academic modules and internships where the apprentice clowns are working together with experienced clowns.

The work of the Danish Hospital Clowns is dependent on donations. The donated funds ensures the presence of professional clowns on pediatric wards on Danish hospitals.

About the Hospital Clown

The purpose of the Hospital Clowns is to make the hospitalization for long term hospitalized kids a little easier to get through, simply by offering the child its sheer presence. Humor and close personal presence makes room for happiness and allows the child to be just that: a child – in spite of a serious illness. The clowns also fill the role of being a confidant for the little patients. A lot of thoughts are going through the minds of these children and they are not always easy to share with close family. This work is done every day at the pediatric wards on Danish hospitals. This is a job that makes so much sense!

ello Sandwich (Ebony Bizys) is an Australian crafts artist, designer and blogger based in Tokyo. Before moving to Tokyo in 2010, Bizys worked at Vogue magazine for 11 years, most recently in the position as Deputy Art Director at Vogue Living. Since moving to Tokyo, Bizys has Art Directed a Japanese book, designed a Japanese fashion website, been commissioned by Vogue Japan to make artworks for their publication, collaborated with Japanese masking tape brand mt on workshops and has appeared in many Japanese books and magazines. Bizys currently blogs for Vogue Japan, hosts monthly craft workshops and in July 2012 she released a Japanese Craft Book. She records her daily life on her Japan + Craft blog Hello Sandwich.

Why Tokyo? I've been in love with Japan ever since I can remember. I had been to Tokyo nine times on holidays before moving to Japan in 2010. The cut off age for the Australian working holiday visa for Japan was fast approaching for me so when I decided to leave my job at VOGUE Living Magazine and move to Tokyo, it was a case of now or never. It was the hardest but best decision I have ever made in my life. I love everything about Tokyo and I can't imagine living anywhere else.

It seems like you are a little beautiful geisha caught in an Aussie girls body... Is that true??? Oh, I wish I was Japanese! I wish I could pull out my little maroon passport at the airport and not have to worry about renewing my Japanese visa. But I guess the grass is always greener. I am lucky to be able to live and work in Japan as a foreigner. And in many ways, I feel as though it's easier to live in Japan as a foreigner without the expectations put on Japanese nationals. How long have you lived there ? I moved to Shimokitazawa, Tokyo in June 2010 so just over four years now. What are your favourite sweet Sunday activities in Tokyo? I work very irregular hours so I often don't even know what day of the week it is. I'm often hosting a workshop on a Sunday but might have a weekday off. My favourite ideal day-off would be: Breakfast at Omotesando's Pan to Espresso, a few hours browsing the design and craft sections at Aoyama Book Centre, lunch at Yoshitomo Nara's A-Z cafe, a glass of Moet at the top floor bar at Spiral and then a stroll down to Shibuya for a spot of shopping. I also love just riding my mamachari (grannies style bike) around local back streets and taking photos for Hello Sandwich blog, or for my instagram. Will you ever move back to Australia ? I will stay in Japan for as long as the Japanese Immigration will give me a visa. I love this country so much. I know you write books and do lots of workshops on paper art and DIY – any chance of a European tour? I will be in Antwerp and Copenhagen in November! I want to host a workshop there if I can! I love Copenhagen and in fact I want to live there so if it could be arranged to come back to host a workshop in Copenhagen, I would love to! 12 In Color We Trust

Tokyo is full of smiles... Even on the most boring scraps of carpet – they find a way to add a smile sticker... We loved it and we will be introducing lots of smiles in the coming seasons.

Shibuya's Hachiko cros sing is without adoubt a sound of Tokyo you will never forg et. So many advertising screens with competing sounds . It's incredible and my absolute favourite place on this plan et!

The photo at the bottom is a mascara for that annoying grey hair that keeps growing... If you can't find it it in Tokyo – don't waste your time looking anywhere else.

oëlle and I have worked together for a few seasons by now - we enjoy each others company and we work very easily together in a very happy flow. It is important and so vital for me that you are in a good energy space when you travel together. Joëlle was almost 7 months pregnant during our trip – but she was in great shape. We stalked around from early morning to late at night without many breaks. She had already been to Tokyo several times but for me it was a first. I started out filling my customs form with a pink pen but was sent to the back of the line by a very shocked customs officer... NOOOOOO cannottttttttt use pink!!! That was the only time I felt a no acceptance of color...

loved the hustle and bustle and the very different and organized style of life - also compared to other places in Asia where I have travelled much more. Feeling BIG in Japan – happened quiet a few times... About 30 cm. taller than everyone else...

Just a lemon easily removes grease stains and dirt from your sink and shower. A fast and easy way to keep these areas clean and spotless with no strain on the environment.

Bee stings are painful and itchy but a little bit of acid from a lemon can help relieve the pain. Squeeze a little lemon juice on a cotton ball and dap it on the sting. This also works on mosquito bites.

pain or stiff muscles after exercising? Mix lemon oil, almond oil, ginger oil and rub it in the sore places. Cold sores â&#x20AC;&#x201C; those unpleasant buggers can cure a lot faster with a bit of lemon juice or oil mixed with almond oil applied several times a day.

hat makes you happy? The list is long - I think I am quite easy on this. It can be a ray of sunshine, an unexpected smile… or the expected one. A beautiful mix of colors... anything made with love…people who care...

ow do you stay inspired after so many years? Of course this goes up and down but at the moment I am on a high.... I feel so inspired by what I do. Our new RICEteria – gathering our collection together with food – I just love it. Also writing my second book gives me renewed energy.

hat do you do to keep up the motivation and the constant evolvement? Stay curious - with my eyes and my heart open - and in the last few years I have found that doing sports is really an important factor in order for me to feel energetic. hat is the funniest/craziest/wildest thing that comes to mind in the history of RICE? We have had some funny stories over the years – like once when wanted to add a ribbon with words as the boarder on some plastic floormats. We instructed the supplier that the words should be: RICE – Let’s Dance – RICE – Let’s Dance etc. etc. The supplier took it very literally and the ‘etc etc’ was printed on to the ribbon as well.

hat is your favourite color/product? I am not that faithful when it comes to colors favourites – they really do vary according to my mood and usually I have a few color combinations that are my flavour of the month... At the moment I love the softer hues and I am in love with GOLD details together with the pastels... But I also fancy a good neon orange........

oëlle is our freelance designer from the land of tulips. She is based in Amsterdam and runs her Studio Sjoesjoe from home. If you want exciting prints, a fabulous event or lovely lifestyle products…she is the one to go to. She has been working with Rice for 2½ years and it is always a joy when she comes to the office. Joëlle is a lovely person with a smile on her face at all times.

here do you find inspiration? It can be anything and anywhere really. Like Roald Dahl said: “The greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places”. My eyes, ears and nose are always searching for new fresh ingredients and sparkles to give my creativity a daily boost of energy! I love to travel and discover unknown places and shops… Eat beautiful food in inspiring restaurants or just take long walks. And not to forget, my day starts with some 'Pinterest vitamins'.

hat is your favorite product from this collection? I am very proud of this bright summer collection... I especially like the dish-brush girls, can't wait to see them dancing in my kitchen. And I love all the products with the lemon print too. It gives me that ultimate summer feeling!

o you believe in Everyday Magic? With all my heart! Every day I find magic, just in the little things and sweet moments of life.

tine works as a photographer at the danish Studio Skovdal & Skovdal. Stine mainly does food shots for various magazines and cookbooks, but is actually specialized in portrait and lifestyle photography. Her versatile background fits perfectly with Rice and we just love working with her.

hat is your favorite pastime? Love spending long lazy Sunday mornings in bed, with a good cup of coffee and the latest interior/ food magazines… Or eating at a good restaurant in the company of my boyfriend.

hat is your best/craziest/wildest experience with Rice? That would be having the most fantastic time making this catalogue and the new book. It was so inspiring to see how Rice mix and match colors and textures of their own products with a lot of other things. It really gave me a lot of energy and inspired me to put more color in my every day and home. How can you not get a smile on your face, when there is so much color around you! It has changed me earlier it all had to be white and organic. Now I have learned to add more color to my life. It makes me a happier person.

ice is currently employing 7 people in Bangkok and Ann is the manager at Rice Thailand Office. She has been on board for a long time and is very familiar with the colorful universe of Rice. Her first sourcing job for Rice was for the AW2003 collection. Ann is our trusted Angel of the East! From handling suppliers to finding new exciting products and knowing the secret location of the best Dim sum place… She’s the one!

hat is the best part about your job? Seeing and knowing a lot of products, being part of Rice universe of colorful and funky stuff.

hat is your favourite color/product? I am a little in the Neon tone now, so 905c is my favorite color for this year. After consideration, I believe I love melamine product the most, due to its shine and

vivid when colors and patterns are applied on it, also it’s durability over years. My mom bought one melamine dinner set when I was around 12 years old and it is still there in her kitchen.

he silliest product succes over times? The angel from hell T-shirts reminds me most, everyone at Rice got so freaked out about this case!! What happened was that the stitching on the wings at the back of the T-shirts was marked with a pen which should completely disappear within 24hours…. only it didn’t. A lot of the staff in Denmark was hand washing and ironing the T-shirts after hours in order to be able to keep up with the orders.

or 3 years now I have been exercising with a personal trainer called Morten Tillitz. He also comes to rice every Monday to train all our staff members. This has been such an awakening for me but after boxing and sweating and forcing myself I have felt that looking inwards is as big a need as training hard. Through a friend of mine, I have met a wonderful German Lady, Annika Isterling. Check her out at annikaisterling.com Whenever I can, I go to Hamburg to do yoga with her. I introduced my two favorite sports and lifesaver people to each other. Among many things Annika organizes yoga retreats in beautiful places - I joined for one week in Ibiza in May, and was surprised at how boring most yoga items are.... so VOILA.... we have made our own little yoga theme - with dots and floral prints.. Just breathe - stretch and enjoy....

The quieter you become - the more you can hear..... Sometimes when doing yoga I have so much noise inside my head.... I try to empty it - by breathing and stretching.... it is not easy but when I manage, I always find myself energized, relaxed and inspired...... There is something delightfully informal about outdoor gatherings. It is like everything around you just screams relax… chill out, enjoy and have fun! Everybody can do their own thing while still being together. Enjoy some fun garden games or doze off lying on a nice blanket in the sun. Gather for a long lazy lunch in the shade and enjoy a glass of wine in the glow from the sunset.

Summer equals lots of colors. Mix and match all your favorite table ware for a unique personal look.

ICE has always had a soft spot for mushroom prints - and anything with mushrooms.... It has been present in almost every collection. There is just something wonderful about the dots…the colors… the fairytale feeling that these little wonders of nature give. And now the mushroom print is moving into the kitchen too. These great glass jars are perfect for jam or chutneys…or for storage of bits and pieces as well. They come in 2 sizes of 400ml and 600ml.

TIP!

Take a nice jar - fill it with homemade jam or chutney… decorate it with stickers or fabric covers and voila! You have a great hostess gift with a lovely personal touch.

There is also wooden signs for your herbs. A chalk is included when you buy these cuties. If you want to use them outdoor we recommend you use a permanent marker instead…

plum’n’cinnamon chutney 1 kg pitted plums 5 cinnamon sticks 4 onions 2 dl vinegar

300 g. sugar 1 tbsp. cornstarch 1 tbsp. water 1 small chili

Cut the plums in halves and remove the pits. Coarsely chop half the plums and set aside. Roast cinnamon sticks in a pan for a few minutes at low temperature. Peel the onions and coarsely chop and finely chop the chili. Add onions, chili, vinegar, sugar and the halved plums to the cinnamon sticks and let it simmer for 30 minutes, until the plums are tender. Dissolve corn starch in water and add to the chutney while stirring. Rise to boil, add the 500 g. of chopped plums and let simmer for another 10 minutes. Pour the chutney in clean jars and tighten the lid thoroughly. Store in a cool place.

A long time dream has come true....... So often when I go out, I am wishing for a magic wand to just color my surroundings happy and also throw in a bit of ‘ricefication’... You know... adding our products to the real world.

love going out – I get a lot of inspiration from this. One of my favourite places is in Ireland – AVOCA – a customer of ours who owns a lot of huge and beautiful stores all over Ireland. They have an amazing mix of food, clothes, books, cafe, restaurant, garden section etc. Everything you can possibly imagine in one place. What I love the most is that when you eat there – even if they feed hundreds of people every day – you always feel that the food on your plate is made just for you by someone who really cares. Their place has been of great inspiration to me.
