HOME HEALTH CARE Your local Peoples Pharmacist focuses solely on dispensing medications and expert health advice, right? This is true, but it is not the full answer. Your Peoples Pharmacist is also a wealth of knowledge about home health care items and aids for daily living. Perhaps these are pharmacy items you are not familiar with. These products can help make your daily life easier and your home safer. Lets take a look at some of the most popular home health care items. The most common home health care items that your local Peoples Pharmacist stocks are canes and walkers. Canes and walkers can be very helpful if you have issues with balance or have an injury. A cane can provide a third point of contact with the ground to help stabilize your footing. Why do you think hikers use walking poles? The style, shape, colour and extra features of canes are endless. Check with your Peoples Pharmacist to see which style is right for you and to ensure it is the right size. Also you should make sure the cane tip is not broken or damaged. A damaged cane tip can make the end slippery or dangerous. One of my favourite cane accessories is the cane holder. This little attachment ensures that when you rest your cane against a wall or countertop, it does not slide down to the ground. I also like the ice pick attachment for slippery sidewalks. 4 PEOPLES Health

The next step up in mobility and balance assistance from a cane, is the walker. The most common type have four wheels and a basket. Newer models, of the four wheeled walker, fold up to fit in a car trunk and are surprisingly light. The best feature is that they have a seat! If you have difficulty walking long distances, you can take a break whenever you want. As with canes, check with your Peoples Pharmacist to ensure a proper size and fit of your walker. If you do have a walker, make sure the hand brake works properly. If it is a bit loose or the cable is stretched, take it into a bicycle repair shop to be fixed. One word about canes and walkers. People might be hesitant to use them for a few reasons. The first is the thought that they are only for old people. No, they are for smart people who understand that sometimes you need a bit of help getting around. People stare at seniors with canes and walkers for one reason only; curiosity about the fascinating engineering used to design these ingenious mobility aids. Another reason not to own a walker or cane is that they might appear to be expensive. While this might be true, lets look at this another way. Suppose you lose your balance on the way to the theatre and injure yourself. The ambulance call is between $50-80. You and your guests will most likely have to forfeit your theatre tickets, $100+. You might also be in the emergency room for Continued On Page 11

COLORECTAL CANCER Colorectal cancer is the third-most-common cancer and the second-most-common cause of cancer deaths in Canada. However, it is one of the most preventable forms of cancer with scheduled and thorough testing. Colorectal cancer means that cells that aren't normal are growing in your colon or rectum. These cells grow together and form polyps. Over time, some polyps can turn into cancer. This cancer is also called colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending on where the cancer is. If it is detected early, it is highly treatable. There are several lifestyle choices and regular screening tests that can significantly reduce your risk of this disease. Here is some important information on risk factors - and on tests that can help screen for colorectal cancer. Risk factors Age: Everyone who is older than 50 has a risk of getting colorectal cancer. As you age, your risk for colorectal cancer increases. In fact, more than 90% of those afflicted with the condition are over the age of 50, and the majority are 70 or older. Diet: The number one cancer that one can prevent through diet is colorectal cancer. Studies have revealed that a healthy balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, lower fat milk products and healthy fats hasbeen linked to a decreased risk of colorectalcancer. Conversely, a diet high in fat and calories, low in fibre, vegetables and fruits and eat6 PEOPLES Health Join us on

ing too much red meat and processed meats, has been linked to an increased risk of the disease. Fibre is a substance found in all edible plants – fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, etc. – that is not digested in the body. Fibre adds bulk to the stool as it absorbs water; a soft, bulky stool stimulates the walls of the colon to move feces through quickly and easily. Fibre also absorbs carcinogens in the bowel, and combined with fast movement of stool, toxic substances come in less contact with the lining of the colon and rectum. If feces are kept in the colon for a longer than average period of time, there is a chance that toxins may build up. For example, colonic bacteria produce toxic waste and colon cancer may be linked to prolonged exposure to these toxins. Hence, the timely and regular elimination of waste is always recommended. For that reason, according to researchers, insoluble fibre might display the most protective effects against colorectal cancer. A sedentary lifestyle. If you're inactive, you're more likely to develop colon cancer. Studies have shown that those who engage in regular, moderate exercise such as brisk walking, dancing, and skating are at a lower risk of developing colorectal cancer than those who are. Those with higher levels of activity, i.e. more intense/vigorous exercise for a longer duration, can reduce risk even further. Vigorous exercise includes running, cycling, and aerobics. Exercise is thought to lower colorectal cancer risk in part by preventContinued On Page 8

ing/reducing excess body weight, another risk factor for colorectal cancer, and regulating hormones. The colon acts as a sewage plant. It recycles the materials your body can use and stores the waste for disposal. The longer waste sits in the colon or rectum, the longer toxic materials have to leach out of the solidifying stool and back into your tissues. Exercise gets your body moving, which helps move the waste in your body. This is because exercise stimulates peristalsis, a wave-like muscular contraction that helps push waste through the colon. Family history: You're more likely to develop colon cancer if you have a parent, sibling with the disease. If more than one family member has colon cancer or rectal cancer, your risk is even greater. While this may be in part to genetic factors, it may also result from living in a similar environment or adopting a similar lifestyle. Polyps: A colon polyp is a small clump of cells that forms on the lining of the colon. Most colon polyps
are harmless. But over time, some colon polyps can develop into coloncancer. It has been shown that removing polyps that have been discovered by rectal exams and colonoscopies can reduce your risks of developing colorectal cancer. Inflammatory bowel disease: Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis have been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Tests Some tests can prevent colorectal cancer. Screening tests look for a certain disease or condition before any symptoms appear. Catching colon cancer early with screening can greatly increase your survival. Doctors are able to make such a diagnosis by administering a variety of tests that analyze the rectum and rectal tissue as well as the blood. Common tests include: Rectal exam: A doctor or nurse examines the rectum with a gloved finger to feel for any irregularities in the rectum or detect the presence of any polyps. Continued On Page 10

This small, thriving community offers big, exciting things to do: hiking, whale watching, sea kayaking, fishing, diving, bird watching, walking, caving and photography. Colorectal Cancer....Continued From Page 8
Fecal occult blood test (FOBT): This is a test looking for hidden blood in the feces, that can't be seen with the eye. Blood in the stool can be a sign of colorectal cancer. Regular FOBT testing is recommended in people aged 50-74 years, since early detection can improve treatment and survival. Unfortunately it does have a high false positive rate for conditionsother than cancer, such as: inflammation of the colon, peptic ulcer and hemorrhoids, therefore, a colonoscopy will usually be performed if you have a positive result. Colonoscopy: Colonoscopy uses a long, flexible and slender tube attached to a video camera and monitor to view your entire colon and rectum. The doctors can also take out tissues or polyps (growths of tissue) so that they can be analyzed for a more complete diagnosis.
Sigmoidoscopy: A sigmoidoscope (a thin, lighted tube) is used to look inside a person's rectum and lower colon, also called the sigmoid. The sigmoidoscope checks for any abnormalities, including polyps and cancer. Colorectal cancer does not discriminate, and even the healthiest individual can develop the disease. However, diet, lifestyle and regular testing can help in preventing this ailment. *The contents of this article provides basic information, but is not a substitute for professional medical advice. a while; I'm assuming your leisure time is valuable. I think you can see where I'm going with this argument. Don't let misplaced pride cause you to make a bad health care decision. I'm sure that you have heard that the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the home. This makes sense. It is small, has many slippery surfaces, lots of pointed edges and we are often standing on one foot. Your local Peoples Pharmacist has many items to help make this room safer. From no-slip floor and bath mats to grab bars to bathtub seats to raised toilet seats, odds are your local Pharmacist has them in stock or can order them in for the next day. To make getting in and out of the bathtub safer you don't need to install grab handles bolted on each wall. If you want to install them, it is a great idea. But all you might need to make the bathroom safer is a grab bar that clamps on to the side of the tub. It installs in minutes and provides a firm hold to help you maintain your balance when you step in or out of the bathtub. Again if you might think a bath rail is embarrassing or impractical. If you fall in the bathroom and need assistance, chances are you might be naked. I rest my case. This next home health care item I have personal experience with. Yes, I wear compression leg stockings during work. No one can see them as the look like regular socks, but at the end of the day my legs do not feel tired nor sore. I have several pairs and highly recommend them to anyone who stands on their feet a lot. When you stand all day, there is a tendency for fluid to pool at your ankles, causing them to swell. This can be very uncomfortable. Wearing compression socks will help to prevent this swelling. Many brands are reasonably priced and come in a vast array of colours, styles and sizes. The best part is that some extended medical plans might pay for them. Check with your insurance plan for coverage. Wearing compression socks during a long

Focus On ASA 81mg May Help During A Heart Attack If you think you are having a heart attack, calling 911 for medical attention and chewing 2 ASA 81mg tablets may save your life. ASA 81mg slows the blood's clotting action by reducing the clumping of platelets. Platelets are cells that clump together and help to form blood clots. ASA 81mg keeps platelets from clumping together, thus helping to prevent or reduce blood clots. During a heart attack, blood clots form in an already-narrowed artery and block the flow of oxygenrich blood to the heart muscle (or to part of the brain, in the case of stroke). When taken during a heart attack, ASA 81mg slows clotting and decreases the size of the forming blood clot. Talk to your doctor or a Peoples Pharmacist about ASA 81mg.
2016 Walks For ALS May 28. 2016 RICHMOND - VANCOUVER
Peoples Drug Mart Walks For ALS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular disease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. When they fail to receive messages, the muscles lose strength, atrophy and die. Since the disease frequently takes its toll before being positively diagnosed, many patients are debilitated before learning they have ALS. The disease wreaks a devastating effect on patients as well as their families. Peoples Drug Mart is pleased to support the The ALS Society of BC by being title sponsor for the BC & Yukon Walks For ALS. Peoples Drug Mart and The ALS Society of BC have partnered together for the BC Walks for ALS since 2005. Since then, the Walks for ALS in BC & Yukon has raised over $4,371,921. The ALS Society of BC raises funds for both research and to provide direct services and support to those currently living with ALS. Until a cure is found, the Society provides patient services to improve the quality of life of those diagnosed with this disease by offering an extensive equipment loan program, support groups, and educational materials. airplane flight will also help prevent fluid from pooling at your feet. Why do you think they sell them at airports or give them away in first class? Another group of products that your local Peoples Pharmacist carries are collectively called aids for daily living. For most of us, an aid for daily living is coffee. But seriously, aids for daily living are products that make life's little tasks easier. They are especially helpful for people with arthritis or other mobility issues. The list of handy gadgets is endless. There are grippers to help open jars, adapters to make turning house keys easier, shirt button threaders, uniquely shaped knives for kitchen cutting and more. Ask your Peoples Pharmacist for a catalogue of these products. I personally like the reacher wand, it would make picking up little branches in the yard easier on my back. Less bending over to pick up every little branch. Lastly, let us not forget about braces and joint stabilizers. Do you have a sore knee or wrist? More than likely there is a brace or joint stabilizer to make you more comfortable while healing. Wrist, knee, ankle or thumb, odds are your Peoples Pharmacist has one in stock or can order it to arrive the next day. I still wear my ankle brace from time to time. Not out in public, just while at home or sleeping. If you have a brace that you don't wear, because it is unsightly or bulky, why not just wear it at home? It is usually best to wear a brace as often as possible, or as recommended by your doctor or physiotherapist, but if this is not possible then just wear it at home. It is better than not at all. Your local Peoples Pharmacist is a great source of information for more than just medications and supplements. Aids for daily living, mobility aids and compression socks are just a few of the products your community Pharmacist has information about. If you have any questions or concerns about your health, just ask your Peoples Pharmacist. You will be surprised how they can help you live better.

HEART SUPPORT Preventative living is and has been my ideology ever since my teenage years. While the practice has not always been perfect, some thread has been constant and a recent medical checkup confirmed that prevention can payoff over the long run. Having reached the twilight of my middle ages with a modicum of grace, a blood test showed slightly elevated cholesterol levels. This concerned my doctor enough to do a heart disease risk assessment based mainly on lifestyle practices coupled with some genetic factors. We were both happy with the outcome. A 3% risk factor is not so bad, but this was an indicator to throw some more love into nurturing my cardiovascular system. Heart disease is a leading cause of death among Canadians and this is one area where I don’t want my wake up call to be the final curtain. Heart healthy living is as much about letting go as it is about paying attention to what you are bringing in. Throwing heart healthy foods and supplements into a system that is taxed to the max is not going to be an efficient strategy. Hearth health antagonists include stress, sedentary living, smoking, drugs, excess alcohol, obesity and a predisposition toward eating too many “fun” foods. “Fun” foods are those that are generally fried, frosted or free of any nutritional benefit whatsoever. Cleaning up these factors alone will give your heart a boost in the right direction. As with all lifestyle choices, it is best not to take on too much change all at once. Once the wheels of change are chugging without too much effort, begin to gradually add foods and supplements to support the system. Always consult your health professional before making changes to your usual routine. The following are some of my favourite heart happy nutritional supports: 1. Fibre from fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes has many benefits including helping to manage cholesterol levels. Aim for about 25-30 grams daily and add a supplement if needed. 2. Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant which is also involved in energy production and maintenance of cellular integrity. CoQ10 is widely available in a balanced diet but supplementation can be very beneficial for heart health. 3. Essential fatty acids are found in raw nuts and seeds as well

as cold water fish oils. EFAs help to support normalization of blood pressure by promoting healthy blood vessel dilation as well as having a positive effect on cholesterol and triglyceride levels. 4. Turmeric has powerful anti inflammatory properties and studies are finding it beneficial in keeping arteries clear of plaque which can reduce the risk of heart attack. It is available in supplemental form or you can use it liberally in cooking. It has gained recent popularity as a tea as well. 5. Magnesium is a mineral that has been making the nutritional news in many areas of health; some studies are linking magnesium deficiency to heart disease. This important mineral plays a role in energy production, nerve function and muscle relaxation. The best dietary sources for magnesium are dark green vegetables, nuts, fish, whole grains and legumes. 6. L-Carnitine is an amino acid found in red meat that supports cardiovascular health at a cellular level. This nutrient aids in energy production and cellular waste management. It is available in supplemental form for those who don't eat red meat. 7. Green tea or green tea extract has been reported to promote healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Studies suggest that 3-5 cups per day seems to be of benefit in reducing risk factors for heart attack and stroke. 8. Garlic does more than just keep vampires at bay. It is a powerful antioxidant and it has also been shown to lower blood pressure and keep cholesterol levels in check. 9. Plant sterols are natural fatty compounds found in plant foods. They benefit the heart by blocking absorption of cholesterol in the digestive process. Just another great reason to eat your veggies! Lastly, don't forget the benefit of relaxation and a positive mindset. There are studies that have linked negative emotions to a greater risk of heart disease. While it is unclear at this time whether this is because a positive attitude correlates to better self care, or if constant stress takes its toll on physiology, there is no harm to come from a healthy dose of optimism. Take a break, breathe deeply, rest your mind and cultivate gratitude for the amazing job your heart does every minute of every day. Good Health to You!
