HELPFUL ADVICE ON VACCINATIONS It is hard to believe that summer is behind us and we are now approaching the winter season. Beach blankets and tents go into the closet, back to school supplies emerge and we search for lost mittens. Your local Peoples Pharmacist is also preparing for winter, but their plans are a little different. We make sure the cough and cold aisle is fully stocked and vaccines have been ordered. That is right, winter also means influenza and other vaccines will soon be available. This year will be one of the most confusing in term of vaccination options. Hopefully, by the end of this month's article, you will be better informed about your immunization options. The first decision to be made is about yearly vaccinations involve the influenza shot. For most people, catching the yearly flu is only a minor inconvenience. They get sick for a few days, spend some time in bed and things are fine. However, for people with chronic medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease), the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, catching the flu can be very dangerous. This is why these individuals, their caregivers and friends should get a yearly flu vaccine. To explain why vaccination is a good idea, let's learn about the principle of herd immunity. Essentially, this means that if a significant amount of those around you are vaccinated or immune to a disease, you are most likely protected. Some businesses offer free vaccines it order to keep their employees healthy. Can you spare the time to spend three to four days in bed? In many cases, caregivers and those who work with people at risk can get a flu shot at no charge. Ask your Peoples Pharmacist if you qualify for a free influenza vaccine. This year there might be a choice in flu shots: the regular one and a high-dose flu shot. For most people the regular flu shot works just fine. However, those who are very young, elderly or have immune system issues might not produce enough antibodies with the standard flu shot. These three groups of people tend to have a weaker immune system than the general population. So when they are vaccinated, 4 PEOPLES Health

they might not produce enough antibodies to protect themselves against an actual influenza infection. The thought is that if you give a higher dose influenza vaccine, more antibodies are produced. Recent studies using the high dose flu shot have shown this to be true. However, there is not enough information to determine if this actually provides more protection during the yearly flu season. There should be more information after about the effectiveness of the high-dose flu shot in the next few years. What is know is that people who get the high-dose flu shot tend to have slightly more side effects of fever and soreness at the injection site. At the time of writing this article, the cost and availability of the high dose flu shot was not know. Ask your Peoples Pharmacist for more information. Since you are in the office for a vaccine already, your health care professional might ask if you have had a pneumonia vaccine lately. Those 65 years and older, you should consider getting a pneumococcal vaccine once every five years. It is possible to have the flu and pneumonia vaccine during the same office visit. This year there will be a choice for pneumococcal vaccines. Your doctor or pharmacist might recommend that you consider getting a vaccine called Prevnar 13. Prevnar 13 works a little differently than the regular pneumonia vaccine. It is thought that you build slightly better immunity with the Prevnar 13 vaccine. There is also evidence that if you get the regular pneumonia vaccine 12 months later, you have a greater immune response and produce more antibodies than normal. Again whether this newer vaccine provides better real world protection, has yet to be seen. Prevnar 13 is not funded by the government vaccination plan, so ask your Peoples Pharmacist for more information. The third vaccine you might be asked about is the shingles vaccine called ZostavaxÂŽ. Most people have heard of the condition referred to as shingles. It is a painful skin rash caused by the same virus that gave you chickenpox as a kid. Continued On Page 11

FINDING CANCER EARLY: WHAT WOMEN NEED TO KNOW Cancer is a disease that starts in our cells. Our bodies are made up of millions of cells, grouped together to form tissues and organs such as muscles and bones, the lungs and the liver. Genes inside each cell order it to grow, work, reproduce and die. Normally, our cells obey these orders and we remain healthy. But sometimes the instructions get mixed up, causing the cells to form lumps or tumours, or spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body. No one wants to think about having cancer. It’s too serious, too upsetting, too big. Most days you probably feel okay – and anyway, who has time? But no matter how healthy you feel or how busy you are, you need to take the time. Did you know that thousands of women beat cancer every year, either because they’ve seen their doctor for a routine checkup, followed screening guidelines or told their doctor about a change to their body? • When cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is often simpler and more likely to be successful. • Finding cancer early means that there is less chance that the disease has spread to another part of your body. • When you find cancer early, you have a better chance of surviving. It means that it can be treated earlier – and maybe stopped. What needs to get checked A change to your body or how you feel may mean that something is wrong. Only you know what’s normal for you – so tell a doctor if you notice any of these warning signs: • a new or unusual lump or swelling in the breast or any other body part • a sore that doesn’t heal on your body or in 6 PEOPLES Health Join us on

acebook.com/peoplesdrugmart

your mouth • a change in the shape, size or colour of a mole or wart • a cough, hoarseness or a croaky voice that doesn’t go away • problems swallowing • blood in the urine • unusual bleeding or discharge from the nipple or vagina • changes in bladder habits, such as pain or problems urinating • a change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea) that lasts more than a few weeks • indigestion that doesn’t go away • unexplained weight loss, fever or fatigue • unexplained aches and pains • any new skin growth or areas of skin that bleed, itch or become red Don’t delay – report it right away Having any of these signs doesn’t mean that you have cancer. They may be due to some other medical problem, or they may not be serious at all. Only a doctor can tell for sure. You have nothing to lose by getting a change checked by a doctor, except the time that it takes you to go. Common excuses I don’t feel sick, so this change can’t be anything to worry about. Let a doctor decide. When cancer first develops, you may feel fine. Better to find out now that it’s “nothing” than to wish later that you’d seen your doctor. I’m sure this will just go away on its own – there’s no need to bother my doctor about it. Many people hope that a change will just go away. Continued On Page 8

Finding Cancer Early...Continued From Page 6

Weeks may go by, but the health issue is still around. If it doesn’t go away quickly, you need to tell your doctor about it. There’s no way I have cancer because no one in my family has ever had it. Cancer can happen to anyone at any age. If you’re the first person in your family with cancer, give yourself the best chance for survival by getting it diagnosed early. Screening Screening tests can find signs of cancer at a very early stage, before you even notice a change to your body that might be cancer. Breast cancer If you’re 40 to 49, talk to your doctor about your risk of breast cancer, along with the risks and benefits of mammography. If you’re 50 to 69, have a mammogram every 2 years. If you’re 70 or older, talk to your doctor about how often you should have a mammogram. Cervical Cancer If you’ve ever been sexually active, you should start having regular Pap tests by the time you’re 21. You’ll need a Pap test every 1 to 3 years, depending on your previous test results. Colorectal Cancer If you’re 50 or older, have a stool test at least every 2 years. A stool test is a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or fecal immunochemical test (FIT). Ask your doctor about these tests. The short time it takes to have one could save your life. Reducing your risk

You can avoid some risk factors, such as tobacco. Other risk factors, like age or certain genes, cannot be avoided. Risk reduction (or prevention) means taking action to lower the risk of developing cancer. About half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the public. There are things you can do to lower your overall chance of developing certain types of cancer and stay well. For example, eating a healthy diet that includes a variety of vegetables and fruit each day may reduce the risk of cancer. Even people who make healthy choices and do everything they can to reduce their risk can develop cancer. Some people develop cancer without having any identifiable risk factors. There are many known risk factors for cancer. It has been estimated that smoking is responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths and that one-third of cancers can be linked to diet, obesity and lack of exercise. Risk reduction is taking action to lower one's risk of developing cancer. Risk can be increased or decreased by lifestyle choices and the kind of environment a person lives and works in. About half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the public. This is general information developed by the Canadian Cancer Society. Ian Lloyd...Continued From Page 4

Almost anyone can get shingles. It is thought that one in three people will experience shingles during their lifetime. The reason why people develop shingles is not known. In studies, people who received this vaccine had a reduced occurrence of shingles by about 50%. It is also thought that if you do get shingles, after having the vaccine, there is a reduction in the severity of nerve pain. This vaccine is indicated for all people over the age of 50 years old. If you have had shingles in the past 12 months, speak with your Doctor or your Peoples Drug Mart Pharmacist to see if this vaccine is right for you. There are a few side effects experienced after receiving the vaccine. It might sting at the injection site for a day or two. You may also experience mild flu like symptoms for a few days. There is also a chance that you might develop a short lived rash at the injection site. Almost everyone has had chickenpox at sometime in their life. This is usually a short-lived affliction that causes a lot of skin itching and goes away after a week or two. The truly sad part is that it doesn’t really go away. It is thought that the virus that causes chickenpox (the varicella-zoster virus) is also responsible for shingles. After your body successfully fights off chickenpox, some of the virus travels up into nerve fibers and becomes dormant. Later, the virus reactivates and travels down the nerve fibers to the skin surface. This causes the classic symptoms of shingles: • Numbness, tingling, itching, or pain in the place where the rash is about to appear • Fever (sometimes with chills), nausea, or headache • The appearance of bumps or blisters that contain clear fluid • A rash or odd sensations usually appearing in a band or patch on just one side of the body (Any part of the body can be involved, including the back, chest, abdomen, arms, legs, or face) Remember these symptoms, it can save you a great deal of misery one day. If you, or someone you know, mentions these symptoms, GO DIRECTLY TO A DOCTOR. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL MORNING OR A MORE CONVEINT TIME. Generally, your Physician will order a course of antiviral medications. This slows down the rapid growth of, and subsequent nerve damage caused by, the varicella-zoster virus. These medications help your immune system to “catch up” and fight off the virus. It is essential to start the antiviral drugs as soon as possible. Delaying treatment will not lead to a good outcome and can leave you with long lasting pain. There are a few questions I am asked about the Zostavax® vaccine. How long does it last? At this moment, there is evidence to show that it will last for 10 years. As time progresses, there will be more information concerning whether the vaccine lasts longer, but at this moment 10 years is known. While the vaccine is not government funded, many Ian Lloyd...Continued on Page 13

people are willing to spend about $20 per year for protection against this painful disease. Another question you can ask your local Peoples Pharmacist is whether these vaccines can be given at the same time. In many cases, you can give certain vaccines at the same time without any loss of effectiveness. Ask your Peoples Pharmacist for more information. I generally recommend no more than two at a time, but you can do more if pressed for time. In my experience, people tend to get a little sore and notice more side effects if more than two are given at one sitting. Speaking of which, what are the common side effects associated with vaccinations. Naturally you tend to have a little bit of tenderness at the injection side, but this should not be excessive or interfere with daily activities. There could be slight flu like symptoms: mild fever, mild aches, fatigue and possible a headache. Again this should be mild. In rare cases, there might be a slight redness or rash around the injection site. If you do notice a larger rash than expected, contact your physician or pharmacist. What about the risk of severe anaphylaxis reactions to vaccines? This is a rare possibility, the reality is that the odds of this happening are reported to be between 1 case in 100,000 to 600,000 injections. The chances of this happening are extremely low. Another question that comes up is whether vaccines are associated with autism. The supposed association between the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and autism spectrum disorder first appeared in the medical journal Lancet in 1998. The author of this report, Andrew Wakefield, later disclosed that the article was utterly fraudulent and retracted the article. Dr. Wakefield has faced multiple disciplinary hearings in the wake of the article being discredited. However, there was some good to come of this publication. Health organizations around the world took a good look at their vaccination programs and did not find any unexpected adverse events. Some minor improvements to children's vaccine formulations were implemented. Sadly the media and various celebrities still make reference to these unfounded claims and vaccination rates across the world are declining. Whether this will lead to a rise is childhood disease, previously suppressed by routine vaccinations, is yet to be seen. So much choice this vaccination season. It can be a bit overwhelming, but you can always ask your local Peoples Pharmacist for more information. All you might require is a yearly flu shot. Your Peoples Pharmacist can also recommend many other public health vaccines, like tetanus, if needed. If you plan on traveling this year, you might need vaccines or medications to take with you on your trip. Then again, maybe it might be best just to stick with the yearly flu shot.

PREBIOTIC AND PROBIOTIC SUPPORT Good health begins in the gut and a healthy digestive system is one of the best front line defenses against degenerative disease that we have. This complex system begins with the first bite as enzymes in saliva begin the work of breaking down our food. Digestion continues with the assimilation of nutrients and ends with the elimination of toxins and waste products. Essentially, we need a healthy digestive tract to support hormone regulation, immune system function and bioavailability of vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients. And that is just the quick reference as there has now been research connecting our mental and emotional health to a healthy balance of bacteria in the gastrointestinal system. It could be said that we are only as healthy as our digestive tract and our digestive tract is only as healthy as the balance of beneficial bacteria that inhabit it. Prebiotic and probiotic foods play an essential role in keeping the balance of gut flora in the beneficial range. Bacteria are not always harmful or to be feared; vast colonies of microbes live on and within our bodies and greatly influence our health and well-being. Over 3 pounds of microorganisms live in our intestines; these bacteria are a mix of beneficial and not so beneficial bugs. The right balance of beneficial organisms can keep the less beneficial microbes in check. We need more the good guys to maintain optimal health and we can promote them by including more probiotic and prebiotic foods in our diets. Prebiotics are an essential piece of the healthy digestive ecosystem; these non-digestible soluble fibres feed the beneficial organisms helping them to proliferate. There are 2 main prebiotics: GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides) found naturally in breast milk and fermented dairy products and FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) found in raw chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke, jicama, dandelion greens, garlic, asparagus, banana and cooked or raw alliums. When adding prebiotic foods to your diet you want to start slow and build up gradually as too much too fast can cause gas and abdominal discomfort. Probiotic foods are becoming more accessible to the savvy consumer. The most popular include pickles, kombucha tea, tempeh, yoghurt, kefir, cultured buttermilk, cheese, sauerkraut, kimchi, natto and miso. The key to these foods is that the bacteria are active and alive; this means that they have not gone

through the process of pasteurization. Pasteurization effectively destroys all pathogenic organisms while at the same time killing off all the beneficial enzymes and bacteria. Sterile food does not lend itself to promoting a healthy digestive tract. There is a renewed interest in the art of fermentation and many people enjoy the benefits of foods they ferment at home. Probiotics also come in convenient supplemental form. When choosing a probiotic supplement you want to find one that has a broad range of viable strains from three main categories: 1. Lactobacillus acidophilus is perhaps one of the most well known friendly inhabitants of the small intestine and can be a beneficial ally in gastrointestinal disorders. It is also effective in promoting health of the urinary tract and vaginal tract. 2. Bifidobacterium bifidum is a champion for maintaining a healthy colon and can support liver health. Bifidobacterium infantis is a specific strain that is important to infant health. 3. Lactobacillus bulgaricus lends support to lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium bifidum. It also aids in digestion and assimilation of carbohydrates and proteins. Probiotic supplements come in many forms; depending on your need, you can choose from capsule, powder, wafer, gum or fresh whole food forms. Potencies range from the millions to billions and speak to how potent the product will be by the time it reaches the expiry date if kept in an optimal environment. Many need to be refrigerated to remain viable, but others are formulated to be shelf stable and are ideal for those who wish to support their immune and digestive system while travelling. Our lifestyle also affects gut microbe balance. Antibiotic use is perhaps the number one enemy to a healthy gut ecosystem; it does not discriminate between the bacteria that are making us sick and the ones that are keeping us healthy. Thus they basically throw the baby out with the bathwater. Healthy gut balance can also be thrown off by diets high in sugars and processed food, chlorinated drinking water, drugs, alcohol, stress and environmental toxins. Eat a balanced wholesome diet and include gut friendly prebiotic and probiotic foods for optimal health and wellness. Good Health to You!
