Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter Our History On Friday evening, November 17, 1911, three Howard University undergraduate students, with the assistance of their faculty adviser, gave birth to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. This event occurred in the office of biology Professor Ernest E. Just, the faculty adviser, in the Science Hall (now known as Thirkield Hall). The three liberal arts students were Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning "Friendship Is Essential To The Soul," the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. The phrase was selected as the motto with Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift are our cardinal principles. Following the spirit of Omega, the Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter was chartered on January 24, 2004, in Prince William County, Virginia, with 29 members. The Chapter has grown to more than 200 members dedicated to supporting local humanitarian activities such as the Charles R. Drew Blood Drive, the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society (Relay for Life), the NAACP, and the Omega Game Day Give Back Project with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. We celebrated our 19th anniversary as a testament to our charter members' power, vision, and commitment. The Brothers of PLL have made a firm commitment toward building bridges of goodwill throughout the region. Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter has emerged as an impactful and award-winning chapter at all levels of the fraternity. In 2012, PLL received the International Social Chapter of the Year award for the third time in six years. In July of 2016, the Chapter was honored for the third time as the fraternity's International Chapter of the Year at Omega's Conclave held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Additionally, the Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. recognized PLL as its Social Action Chapter of the Year in 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022. PLL received the prestigious first-place award for the Third District's best Youth Mentorship Program for the fourth time in 2020. Particularly noteworthy, the The Chapter received the first-place "Top Fund Raiser" award for the St Jude Children's Research Hospital at the Third District and International levels for 2020, 2021, and 2022.

PLL welcomes the often challenging but gratifying work of helping others in need. As Omega men, we feel the obligation to uplift fellow members of society and view it as an honor to render service to mankind. Like the knights of old, we figuratively wear our armor and bare our shield to serve mankind. Additionally, our community service support includes Feed the Hungry at Hilda Barge Homeless Shelter, Omega U Mentoring Program (18 Schools and 140 students in Prince William County, Virginia), Clothing Drives, Toy Drives, Ring the Bell for The Salvation Army, Prince William Country Youth Mentorship Program, Feed the Hungry with First Mount Zion Baptist Church, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Baskets, Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) Food Bank, Meet and Greet the Veterans at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1503, Hospital visit to see Veterans and Ezra Nehemiah Solomon (ENS) Youth Mentoring organization. Social Action, one of Omega's nationally mandated programs, has been a significant, meaningful, and effective tool in PLL's impact on the citizens of Prince William County. Programs like Adopt-A-Highway, the Diabetes Walk, Relay for Life, Christmas and Thanksgiving Basket giveaways, Voter Registration/ Education initiative, Feeding the Homeless, Cancer Awareness, and Youth Mentoring/STEM Empowerment programs – among others – have propelled PLL's community successes." Our fraternity, "Omega Psi Phi," continues to flourish, mainly because Founders Love, Cooper, Coleman, and Just were men of the highest ideals and intellect. The Founders selected and attracted men of similar ideals and characteristics. It is not by accident that many of America's great black men are/were Omega Men. To this date, there are very few Americans whose lives have not been touched by a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter continues the proud tradition of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. It will continue to serve Prince William County and the surrounding areas for the next century and beyond.

Talent Hunt History The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Talent Hunt idea was created in the Fraternity's Sixth District. (North and South Carolina) in 1945. The first District Talent Hunt Program was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, on April 19, 1946. The need for such a program was born out of the unequal opportunity afforded to some American youths to develop and give expression to their talents. The Talent Hunt Idea has become one of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's National Projects, with all graduate chapters mandated to conduct an Annual Talent Hunt Program. On the Local and District levels, the project is competitive. At the National level, the program is demonstrative. The National program is made up of District Winners who, by their talent, diligence, ability, and potential, appear as guests of the Fraternity. At this stage of our growth, the Talent Hunt Idea is proceeding on the National level along three lines: 1) At each session of the Grand Conclave and International Leadership Conference, a Talent Hunt demonstration is presented to the public. 2) In addition, Omega is also interested in what it calls a "Fundamental Search for Talent." Here the Fraternity hopes to develop the process and resources through which it can help, discover, and assist, as may be needed, to young people who have shown and possess talents of exceptional quality. 3) In our projected planning, we hope to encourage the contestants of our Talent Hunt further Programs by recommending them to our chapters and other organizations throughout the United States for presentations in their respective communities. It is significant to note that the National Talent Hunt, involving all of the Fraternity's twelve districts, is the outgrowth of those participants who became winners in the District Talent Hunt contests. From this grand idea and the efforts of many dedicated brothers to the cause of talented youth, we celebrate seventy-four years of progress and fulfillment, knowing that we have provided significant contributions to music and theatrical arts. Without this setting, some of them would not have received this well-deserved exposure, and others might not have benefited from the numerous awards and scholarships presented to them. Talent Hunt Contestants have appeared on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour, the Apollo Theater, Radio City Music Hall, Philadelphia Academy of Music, Philadelphia Civic Center, New York City and Washington, D.C. Centers for the Performing Arts, the Eastman Theater, and other notable venues.

Bro. COL (Ret) Curtis B. Taylor Sr. May 30, 1951—December 6, 2020 Curtis B. Taylor attended South Carolina State on a band scholarship where he excelled academically as well as pursued his love of music. He was initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity through Xi Psi Chapter and earned a commission in the Army after completing ROTC. After graduating, Bro. Taylor attended Cornell University where he received a master’s degree in music theory and composition becoming the first African American to complete his master’s degree in music at Cornell. After completing his graduate studies, Bro. Taylor began his distinguished military career. He served for 26 years in many command and staff assignments around the world and retired in the grade of Colonel. While serving in the military, Curtis continued his involvement in music. He performed and directed many musical productions that were highly acclaimed and also directed and accompanied various choirs while serving as the Director of Music and Worship at Antioch Baptist Church. Bro. Taylor joined Pi Lambda Lambda chapter in 2010 and began sharing his musical gifts with the Talent Hunt Committee. He knew the value of the talent hunt program in the development of performing arts students after having benefitted from the program himself while in high school. Bro. Taylor often performed as a guest artist during the chapter’s annual talent hunt programs and actively encouraged students to compete each year to gain more development and experience. Bro. Taylor knew the importance of having highly qualified judges to fairly evaluate student performances in all categories of the performing arts. He was instrumental in supplying many qualified judges through his network of contacts. After each competition, Curtis made himself available to students and parents to explain and answer questions regarding the scores rendered by the judges, thereby providing constructive feedback to help in the development of the students. Over the years, this initiative grew into a feedback session that involves all the judges in a structured environment and has become one of the most impactful parts of the chapter talent hunt program. Bro. Taylor departed this life in 2020 leaving a legacy of commitment to excellence in the performing arts. Curtis is survived by his wife of 47 years, Abigail Taylor, and three sons who are members of Omega Psi Phi. In 2023, Pi Lambda Lambda chapter unanimously approved naming the annual Talent Hunt Program in his honor.

I have had the honor of performing and competing for the past two years and look forward to hopefully another. Last year I was the first place winner and it was such an amazing feeling. I started dancing at the age of twelve and only studied hip-hop. The following year I was eager to join the competition team and learn all the other areas of dance. Since then I have fully involved myself in dance and was even able to make it into Colgan and continue dancing while at school. I have not been dancing for as long as most dancers have, so competing and winning first last year felt very validating in a situation where the only thing I can feel is out of place. I really want to take dance past high school and the hopefully go to Shenandoah University to further my study. I would be once again honored to participate in this years Talent Hunt.

National Achievement Week began at the 1920 Grand Conclave in Nashville. Brother Carter G. Woodson inspired the overall idea. In 1927, at Brother Woodson’s urging, the Fraternity made National Negro Achievement Week an annual observance. In 1976, this commemoration evolved into Black History Month.
