newsletter of the Peoria Public Library www.peoriapubliclibrary.org Paws to Read Summer Reading Proves to Be Huge Success

MCCLURE BRANCH 315 W. McClure 309.497.2700

Record numbers of Summer Readers signed up, read and celebrated this summer at Paws to Read Summer Reading. The final number of readers who signed up was over 5,500. In addition 118 pets, including some turtles and hermit crabs were signed up and read to this summer. What it means for Peoria is plenty of students returning to school with strong reading skills and readers who took time to enjoy the delights of a good book. All summer long families took part in the many story and craft times, movies, programs and animal events based on the theme “Paws to Read.” From learning about dog DNA and learning to identify the prints of wild creatures to making craft animals, the programs were enjoyed by capacity crowds. Everyone who read for five weeks had the opportunity to enjoy a free Chiefs ball game and those who read for six weeks also enjoyed an evening of free fun at Peoria Riverfront Museum where the prize drawings were held for those who attended the party. The program would not work without the support of Friends of Peoria Public Library, The Chiefs, McDonalds, District 150, Einstein Bagels, The Par-A-Dice, and the Peoria Humane Society as well as the many generous prize donors who support the program. Our gratitude goes to the following prize donors: Lowe’s, iTunes, Fandango, Barnes & Noble, Home Depot, Shell, Papa Johns, Hick’ry Stick, McAlister’s Deli, Senara, Flat Top Grill, Buffalo Wild Wings, Sewing Center, Zen Nails, PSO, Firehouse Pizza, Steak & Shake, Smashburger, Forest Park, Relics, Naturally Yours, Monicals, Avantis, Rivermen.

Library staff recently conducted a survey of homeschooling parents at Lakeview Branch about services they would be interested in using at the library. One major item that attracted parents was database training. The survey was the groundwork for the development of a three part mini-series, which will cater to the homeschooling family’s needs and interests, but all families wanting to learn more about the library’s e-services are encouraged to attend. The free workshops will educate families on how take advantage of the library’s free online databases. The mini-series will focus on three specific databases. The first training will be focused on Brainfuse HelpNow, showcasing ways students can get

tutoring and writing assistance and improve their academic performance. The second class will focus on the library’s local history and genealogy resources, showing students how they can learn about their ancestry as well as local history. The last installment will focus on Mango Languages, which helps students learn and practice new languages. All three databases are extremely useful in helping students grow academically and interculturally. Students of all backgrounds, skill levels, and ages are encouraged to take advantage of the library’s free online resources. Workshops will take place on alternating Saturdays: July 26, August 9, and August 23 at the Main Library in the LL2 Computer Lab from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

This Month in Peoria History

Patriotism Shows in Music Selections

By Ellie Nielsen

By Jill Harter

August 5, 1864: The ferry boat “Metamora” made its maiden trip on this day taking a group of Peorians on an excursion to Chillicothe. August 8, 1887: The Chatsworth Train Wreck occurred on this day. Approximately 85 people were killed in the wreck. August 20, 1909: The steamer “Fred Swain” was destroyed by fire near the upper bridge. All passengers escaped. August 19, 1911: It was announced that an iron kiosk would be set up at Adams and Main St. by the weather bureau, to furnish weather information to passersby. August 18, 1915: Grand View Park was opened to the public. August 14, 1930: It was announced that the Caterpillar Tractor Co. would start moving its offices from San Leandro, California to East Peoria. August 29, 1941: It was published that Peorians contributed over 15 tons of aluminum for the war effort. August 28, 1948: The Bellevue Drive-In Theater held its grand opening on this day. Considered one of the worst accidents in American railway history, the Chatsworth Train Wreck made headlines in Peoria newspapers as many of the passengers aboard were citizens of Peoria. On August 10, 1887, a Toledo, Peoria, & Western train with 600 passengers destined for Niagara Falls crashed while attempting to cross a burning trestle east of Chatsworth. Earlier that day, railroad section men were conducting a controlled burn to remove dry grass from around the tracks, and left the fire unattended, causing it to spread to the trestle. The first engine made it across safely, but several of the engines after that plunged into the ditch, killing approximately 85 people and injuring 150. The train depot in Chatsworth was converted into a temporary hospital and residents from neighboring towns came out to help the victims and even opened up their homes to them until they recovered. It was reported that the T.P.&W. railroad paid out over $300,000 in claims to the victims and families.

The big celebration of the summer, the Fourth of July, has brought in some new interests to the classical music checkouts at Peoria Public Library. With albums like “America the Beautiful: A Collection of Patriotic Songs” and “All the Best Marches,” the category of ‘Various Artists’ have come in first place among the artists being checked out recently. Other artists who have been receiving more attention are Franz Schubert, Arvo Part, and Erik Satie. Considering the few years he lived, Franz Schubert composed a large body of work consisting of choral, chamber, and piano music. Being of an era of dynamic changes in classical music, Schubert is known for his unintentional yet nontraditional segue from the Classical Era of music to the Romantic Era of music. Only time will tell the full impact of modern day composer, Arvo Part. He is already extremely influential and unique with his own creation of a tonal technique that he incorporates in much of his musical styling. Twentieth century composer Erik Satie is known for his contribution to the avant-garde. Additionally, Satie was a part of the first wave of composers who were diametrically opposed to the earlier Romantic Era and embraced the innovations of twentieth century music. With this variety of selection, comes the familiarity of beloved favorites including Maurice Ravel’s Bolero, Johannes Brahms’ Requiem, and beautiful chromatic melodies of Frederick Delius’ Songs of Sunset. These composers along with a whole host of others have been in the minds of patrons this summer. With our wide collection of classical music Peoria Public Library patrons will always find something new to listen to. To see the selections, feel free to visit our catalog or any of our branches and see what we have to offer.

Liked That Book? Try This One! By Liesl Prentice

Just finished a great read and want something similar? Or perhaps you’re on a long holds list and want to read something now? Here are some recommended read-alikes based off some of the currently popular items at Peoria Public Library: If You Like The Hurricane Sisters... The Three Mrs. Parkers by Joan A. Medlicott: Three women of different generations--cantankerous Winifred Parker, her widowed daughter-in-law Zoe, and Zoe’s daughter, Katie, mourning the loss of her child--are drawn together by circumstances beyond their control. Why you might like it: Both leisurely-paced novels are set in South Carolina and feature three women from three different generations coming together.

The Beach House by Mary Alice Monroe: Returning to her childhood home in the Lowcountry at the request of her mother, Caretta Rutledge, who had thought she had forever buried her Southern roots and her troubled family, unexpectedly begins to reconnect with her friends and family while she fixes up the family beach house, learning that in order to live life to the fullest, she must forgive and forget the past. Why you might like it: These character-driven novels are each set in South Carolina, incorporating details of life in the Low Country, while also exploring the complex relationships between mothers and daughters. Club Read will meet on Wednesday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss n Housekeeping by Marissio scu Di k o lynne Robinson. Their Bo lives spun off the tilting world like thread off a spindle,” says Ruthie, the novel’s narrator. The same may be said of Becket Royce’s subtle, low-keyed reading. The interwoven themes of loss and love, longing and loneliness—“the wanting never subsided”—require a cool, almost impersonal touch. Royce narrates

natural and manmade catastrophe and ruin as the author offers them: with a sort of watery vagueness engulfing extraordinary events. YA for Adults Book Club will meet on the third Tuesday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Cath is a Simon Snow fan. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids but now Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom. Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?
