Peoria Public Library to Hold Community Discussions on Heroin and Opiate Abuse
As a part of the continuing effort to inform the community about the increasing use and abuse of heroin and opiates in the Peoria area, Peoria Public Library, in cooperation with Peoria Reads! and the Mayor’s Community Coalition Against Heroin, will present a series of four Peoria Reads! community discussions with time allotted for brainstorming community strategies to address this issue. The first discussion was held in October with three more scheduled for November. Mike Kennedy, president and CEO of the Human Service Center in Peoria, will moderate the discussions. The community discussions are being funded by an Illinois Speaks micro-grant from the Illinois Humanities Council and are designed to support efforts to understand and find solutions for the heroin and opiate epidemic that is occurring locally. Wednesday, November 2 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Peoria Public Library Lakeview Branch Lakeview Room Monday, November 7 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Peoria Public Library North Branch McKenzie Room Thursday, November 17 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Peoria Public Library Lincoln Branch Hot Air Balloon Room To attend any of these discussions, please contact Roberta Koscielski at 309-497-2186 or RobertaKoscielski@ppl.peoria.lib.il.us. “This program is made possible in part by a grant from Illinois Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly. Peoria Public Library Adds Online Payments Since the major building project five years ago, library patrons have been able to pay fines and for lost materials with a debit or credit card at the self-check kiosks at each branch. Now the convenience of paying online has been added. When you check your account through the library website at www.peoriapubliclibrary.org under the My PPL tab, or get to RSACat by using the Search the Catalog function at the top of the main page, if you have a fine you will see a red exclamation point on the fines section. Click and you will find a page where you can pay. You will find this similar to any other online payment process. You may use Visa, Master Card, American Express or Discover to pay. There is a small convenience fee to cover the cost of processing. This option will allow you to pay anytime that is convenient for you and save time when you are at the library. You will not face the inconvenience of having to stop and pay when you are at the library and can continue to borrow materials without interruption. Currently you may not borrow any materials if you owe more than $5 in fines or fees. Peoria Public Library is happy to
A New Improved ADML/OverDrive E-books Site Launches in November One of the e-book services offered by Peoria Public Library is the ADML/Overdrive Collection and now it is going to be easier than ever to browse, borrow and read e-books. The new OverDrive is a faster, easier digital library experience. Enhancements will include better browsing. There are new simple availability banners that let you know immediately if you will have to place the title on hold or if it is immediately available. There are also new ways to find titles. You can still use the quick search, advanced search, and search filters to find specific titles or authors in your library’s digital collection but now there are new Subjects links and a Collections menu at the top of the website, so you can browse all subjects or explore featured content at your library. Plus, you can now see the whole digital library on any device. In addition you will find it easier to borrow. You can sign into new OverDrive library websites with your library card, your OverDrive account, or your Facebook account. It is also now going to be easier to renew titles. These are just some of the many improvements. Check out these and many other improvements from our website or download the Overdrive App to your mobile device.

Veterans Communicate Through Art in December-January Gallery Show From Saturday, December 3 through Friday, January 27, the Main Library Gallery will feature the artwork of veterans. 22 VA is a
group of talented veteran artists that want to help other veterans express themselves through visual and creative arts. The show will feature the work of artists who served in the military as well as veterans who took up art to work through the stresses they face. The show was organized by 22 VA which stands for 22 veteran artists who have come together in an effort to help reduce the number of veteran suicides through art. According to the group, veteran suicide claims the lives of 22 veterans a day. This equates to around 30 suicides per 100,000 veterans, a rate that is more than double the rate for the civilian population. 22VA invites all veterans who have created pieces of art to “serve again” and become part of the veteran art family by exhibiting in the show. Artwork may be dropped off at Main Library in the Gallery on Saturday, November 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or on Monday, November 28 and again on Wednesday, November 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Service memorabilia may also be displayed to accompany art. The public is invited to an opening Artist’s Reception on Saturday, December 3 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Join the artists and special guests for a chance to talk about the exhibit and enjoy refreshments. Those interested in participating in the show or who want more information are invited to email Randolph Prunty at kwajagua@ yahoo.com or by calling (309)361-2490. You can also find 22 VA on Facebook.

The Chemist is the newest book by Stephenie Meyer. An ex-U.S. Government agent is on the run from her former employer. She worked in an agency that dealt with secrets so covert that it didn’t even have a name and very few people even knew who she worked for. When they decided she was a liability, they came after her so that now she never stays in one place or uses the same name for very long. They have already killed the only other person that she trusted but something she knows is considered to be a threat and they want her dead. Her former handler contacts her with a case that once complete could save her life but it means working for her ex-employers one more time. She falls for a man who complicates her chance of survival but she applies her unique skill sets and meets the threat head on to complete her case and survive. The Mistletoe Secret: A Novel is the latest in The Mistletoe Collection written by Richard Paul Evans. “Dear Universe, Is anyone out there?” starts a post by a blogger who goes by the initials LBH. She writes about her personal feelings and her devastating loneliness and wonders what it would feel like if just one person cared about her. Alex Bartlett cares. He is living in Daytona Beach, Florida, dealing with his own broken heart and trust issues. He decides to find LBH and through a trail of clues she has unintentionally left, he discovers she lives in Midway, Utah. He gets into town a few days after Thanksgiving and meets a woman named Aria, a waitress at the Mistletoe Diner who encourages his search. When he finds LBH, how does he tell her he knows her secret? Does it he really want to? What are his feelings for Aria?

The Whole Towns’s Talking by Fannie Flagg is a memorable novel about what it means to be truly alive. In Elmwood Springs, a small town in Missouri, there is strange goings on at the cemetery. It is called Still Meadows but it is anything but still. This is the story of Lordor Nordstrom, his Swedish mail-order bride Katrina and their neighbors and offspring. It is the story of how they live, how they love and when they die, how they carry on in mystifying and unexpected ways. The town that Lordor created was not only lively and thriving but it was also a lovely final resting place for the residents. But when odd things begin to happen, the whole town starts talking. Flagg reminds us all that life is a gift and love never dies. Turbo Twenty-Three is the next in the numbered series by Janet Evanovich. When Larry Virgil skips out on his latest court date after he hijacked an 18-wheeler full of bourbon, he is dense enough to try it again and this time bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is on his trail. When he flees the scene, he leaves behind a trailer full of Bogart ice cream and a dead body. Stephanie goes undercover for Ranger by working in Bogart’s factory to try and find out who is sabotaging the business and putting their employees on ice. Now all she has to do is keep her hands off the ice cream and Ranger, explain to her boyfriend Joe Morelli why she is spending her nights with Ranger, Lula and Randy Briggs and keeping track of Grandma Mazur and her new fella. Stephanie has a lot on her plate but these are the type of assignments she does best.

At Peoria Public Library
The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss Bourbon Empire: the Past and Future of America’s Whiskey by Reid Mitenbuler. Unraveling the many myths and misconceptions surrounding America’s most iconic spirit, Bourbon Empire traces a history that spans frontier rebellion, Gilded Age corruption, and the magic of Madison Avenue. Whiskey has profoundly influenced America’s political, economic, and cultural destiny, just as those same factors have inspired the evolution and unique flavor of the whiskey itself. Taking readers behind the curtain of an enchanting—and sometimes exasperating—industry, this book crackles with attitude and commentary about taste, choice, and history. Few products better embody the United States, or American business, than bourbon. A tale of innovation, success, downfall, and resurrection, Bourbon Empire is an exploration of the spirit in all its unique forms, creating an indelible portrait of both bourbon and & non-fiction those who make it.

See Peoria’s Newly Rescued 1960s Promotional Film November 20 The Local History and Genealogy Department at Peoria Public Library continues to uncover treasures in their ongoing effort to make the collection more accessible. More than a year ago, a film can labeled Peoria Progress was uncovered and the quest to find a way to view it began. Now through the efforts of library staff; Larry Ware, Audio Visual Specialist; and William Baker, WTVP producer; the film has been digitized and is about to make a comeback after almost 60 years on the shelf. The film will be shown to the public on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. at North Branch in the Seminar Room. The approximately 20 minute film was produced by the City of Peoria and was used to promote the city. Larry Ware and William Baker will talk about the film and how it was transferred from film to digital media after the viewing. The program is free and open to the public.
September Children’s Book Review by Madison Gailus Five Silly Turkeys by Salina Yoon
Little ones are sure to love Five Silly Turkeys in this Thanksgiving theme board book. It starts off with “five silly turkeys dancing on the floor, one twirls away, and then there were…four.” Counting down from five, we see these silly turkeys being chased by bees, enjoying the view, getting some sun, and enjoying a Thanksgiving pie. All verses are done in a cute rhyming scheme, one on each turn of the page. Bold and bright images are presented on a two page spread, highlighting the activities of the silly turkeys. The book itself is cut into a turkey shape with shiny yellow, crinkle turkey feathers on the end of each page. These are great for little hands to help with turning the page. This book has it all: counting, brightly colored images, rhyming, and textures. (Board Book, PreS–K)
