Volunteer for the Friends and Help Peoria Public Library October includes the national celebration of those
dedicated people who make libraries better across the country with National Friends of the Library Week, October 16-22. “Our library would be much poorer without the Friends,” said library director Leann Johnson. “The funds they raise definitely put the icing on the cake. I think most patrons would be surprised to learn how many of the services and programs they enjoy are supported by the Friends.” In 2015 they provided $4,295 for the Summer Reading Program and $4,320 for other Children’s Programs. These dedicated volunteers also sponsored 16 book signings and programs as well as the Local Author Fair, providing local writers with a way to showcase their work. Friends of Peoria Public Library are currently seeking volunteers willing to give just a few hours a week to help with the Friendly Finds Bookstore. By coming in and helping to sort and price books, or run the cash register just a few hours per week you help the Friends provide the vital funding needed to offer children’s programming, the Summer Reading program, author visits and much more. You will meet likeminded people and maybe find new friends, not to mention the opportunity to see all the sale books first! The Friends run not only the Friendly Finds Bookstore at Main Library, but also book sale shelves at North , Lakeview and Lincoln Branches. They also help sponsor author visits, musical events and art displays that include sales that are fund-raisers for the Friends. To volunteer or for more information, please stop by the Friendly Finds Bookstore on LL2 at Main Library, call (309) 497-2145 or email ProgrammingDept@ppl.peoria.lib.il.us.
September Children’s Book Review by Madison Gallius Leaves By David Ezra Stein: A young bear, who lives on an island is experiencing his first year of seasons. Things were going well as he dances through the summer and picks flowers until the first leaf falls. He asks, “Are you okay?” Then more and more leaves fall, in colors of reds and yellows. A little worried, he tries to catch them and reattach them to the tree in a most unusual way (by poking the branches of the tree through the leaves). It does not go well. Soon, bear grows sleepy and finds himself a den to sleep in. He gathers the fallen leaves and brings them into the den with him. As he sleeps, winter comes and blankets the ground with a fresh layer of snow. Spring arrives as the colors go from blue to yellow and bear awakes. He sees the trees and their new leaves and cries, “Welcome!” The images were created with watercolors and bamboo pen and give the feel of fluidity and blending, much like the seasons themselves. Teachers will find that for young readers, this book does well in a unit about the changing of the season or bears hibernating. (Picture Book & Board Book, PreS – GR 1) –

October by Robin Helenthal
In Two by Two: A Novel by Nicholas Sparks, it seems that Russell Green has it all, a gorgeous wife, a beautiful 6-year-old daughter and a great executive job plus an impressive home in Charlotte. All in all, he is living the dream life, but underneath it all, there are cracks appearing and he finds his world turned upside down. In a few short months, he finds himself without a job or a wife and raising his young daughter on his own. This is the story of Russ’s journey to start a new chapter in his life by launching a new business, and trying to shelter his little girl from the consequences of all these changes. A chance meeting will challenge him to find happiness beyond anything he had ever imagined possible for them both.
The Mothers is a first novel by Brit Bennett and starts in the last half of 17-year-old Nadia Turner’s senior year in high school in Southern California. She is still mourning her mother’s recent suicide when she begins seeing the local pastor’s son, Luke Sheppard who is twenty-one and a former football star. He has suffered an injury and is now waiting tables at a local diner. Nadia and Luke are both young and it is not a serious romance but the pregnancy that results and the following cover-up will have an impact on their lives far beyond their youth. Nadia hides her secret from everyone, including her best friend Aubrey. Years later when Nadia, Luke and Aubrey come back to their hometown as adults, they are still living in debt to the choices they made that summer. The three are caught in a love triangle and haunted by the nagging question: What if they had chosen differently? This book asks the question of whether a “what if” can be more controlling than an incident itself and if as time passes, must we always live in servitude to the decisions we make in our youth.
The Twelve Days of Christmas is Debbie Macomber’s annual holiday novel. Julia Paden likes almost everyone and she is trying to like her aloof neighbor Cain Maddox but no matter how nice she is, he rudely rebuffs her every time. The last straw for Julia is when she catches Cain stealing her newspaper. She decides that she is going to break through his unfriendly behavior the only way she knows how and that is with kindness. To track her progress, she starts a blog called The Twelve Days of Christmas. Her first attempt is to bring Cain homemade treats but he refuses to accept them. During this time, her blog has become an online hit and a number of people are following her adventures. As she chips away at his gruff façade, Julia finds herself falling in love with Cain and that he might even return her feelings but what will happen when he finds out that their relationship has been chronicled on her blog for the rest of the world to see. Will this risk their chance at love?

A captivating performer, Sarah McQuaid seduces her audience with cheeky banter and stories from the road, as well as with stunning musicianship; in her hands, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying instrument. Sarah refuses to be pigeonholed, segueing easily from one of her emotive originals into a 1930s Cuban jazz number, a 16th century lute piece or an unexpected contemporary cover. Sarah McQuaid was taught piano and guitar by her folksinging mother, and remembers being inspired by meeting her distant cousin, well-known singer/ songwriter/storyteller Gamble Rogers, at her grandmother’s house in Indiana. Recently dubbed “guitar queen” by one festival organiser, Sarah is also known for her use of the DADGAD tuning. A portion of CD sales support The Friends of Peoria Public Library. At Peoria Public Library
The Biography and NonFiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, November 13 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss The Train to Crystal City: FDR’s Secret Prisoner Exchange Program and America’s Only Family Internment Camp During World War II by Jan Jarboe Russell. The dramatic and never-before-told story of a secret FDR-approved American internment camp in Texas during World War II, where thousands of families—many US citizens—were incarcerated. From 1942 to 1948, trains delivered thousands of civilians from the United States and Latin America to Crystal City, Texas, a small desert town at the southern tip of Texas. The trains carried Japanese, German, Italian immigrants and their American-born children. Focusing her story on two American-born teenage girls who were interned, the author uncovers the details of their years spent in the camp; the struggles of their fathers; their families’ subsequent journeys to war-devastated Germany and Japan; and their years-long attempt to survive and return to the United States, transformed from incarcerated enemies to American loyalists. Their stories of day-to-day life at the camp, from the ten-foot high security fence to the armed guards, daily roll call, and censored mail, have never been told.
The Bibliophiles Book Club will meet on Tuesday, November 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Circle by Dave Eggers. When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

The Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Cop Town by Karin Slaughter. Atlanta, 1974: As a brutal murder and a furious manhunt rock the city’s police department, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the job will also be her last. She’s determined to defy her privileged background by making her own way—wearing a badge and carrying a gun. But for a beautiful young woman, life will be anything but easy in the macho world of the Atlanta PD, where even the female cops have little mercy for rookies. It’s also the worst day possible to start given that a beloved cop has been gunned down, his brothers in blue are out for blood, and the city is on the edge of war. Kate isn’t the only woman on the force who’s feeling the heat. Maggie Lawson followed her uncle and brother into the ranks to prove her worth in their cynical eyes. When she and Kate, her new partner, are pushed out of the citywide search for a cop killer, their fury, pain, and pride finally reach the boiling point. With a killer poised to strike again, they will pursue their own line of investigation, risking everything as they venture into the city’s darkest heart.

The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, November 14 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Called to Darkness by Richard Lee Byers. Kagur is a warrior of the Blacklions, fierce and fearless hunters in the savage Realm of the Mammoth Lords. When her clan is slaughtered by a frost giant she considered her adopted brother, honor demands that she, the last surviving Blacklion, track down her old ally and take the tribe’s revenge. Yet this is no normal betrayal, for the murderous giant has followed the whispers of a dark god down into the depths of the earth, into a primeval cavern forgotten by time. There, he will unleash forces capable of wiping all humans from the region — unless Kagur can stop him first!
The Genre Evolution Book Club will meet on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. at North Branch to discuss early works in the Christian fiction genre. Selections include In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon, which helped popularize the “What Would Jesus Do?” movement. Or try The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan, an allegorical novel that has never been out of print since its first appearance. Other selections include The Temptation of Saint Anthony by Gustave Flaubert, Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz, and Faust by Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Choose from the list, or read them all!
Intercontinental Readers will meet Tuesday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Main Library to discuss The Little Red Chairs by Edna O’Brien. A woman discovers that the foreigner she thinks will redeem her life is a notorious war criminal. Vlad, a stranger from Eastern Europe masquerading as a healer, settles in a small Irish village where the locals fall under his spell. One woman, Fidelma McBride, becomes so enamored that she begs him for a child. All that world is shattered when Vlad is arrested, and his identity as a war criminal is revealed. Fidelma, disgraced, flees to England and seeks work among the other migrants displaced by wars and persecution. But it is not until she confronts him-her nemesis-at the tribunal in The Hague, that her physical and emotional journey reaches its breathtaking climax. The Little Red Chairs is a book about love, and the endless search for it. It is also a book about mankind’s fascination with evil, and how long, how crooked, is the road towards Home.

The YA Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Menagerie by Rachel Vincent. When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger’s Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quiteordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she’s forced to “perform” in town after town. But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other “attractions”—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies— are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she’ll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed. Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.
