ooking for a New Year’s Resolution that you can actually keep? How about resolving to use more library resources? For example, the cold, snowy days of winter are a great time to take a few minutes to explore all the online databases Peoria Public Library offers. You can do it right from home on any device from your computer to your phone. All you need is your library card number and PIN. If you don’t know your PIN you can get it by calling the library, or if you have given us an email address, by using the link on the catalog page. When you get that new ereader or tablet as a holiday gift, resolve to try downloading the free ebooks offered at www. peoriapubliclibrary.org. If you would like help with your new technology and ebooks, just give us a call or stop in for one-on-one assistance at Main Library every Wednesday afternoon. This could be the year that you start using the expert tutors and free homework help the library offers with Brainfuse, also on our website. A resolution to learn a foreign language this year is a snap when you use Tumblebooks and Mango Languages (particularly if you choose “Pirate” as the language to learn in Mango Languages). While Tumblebooks has books in various languages you can use as a learning tool, you will want to be sure to have it ready for the children in your life. Let Tumblebooks keep your toddlers entertained with animated storybooks or help your early readers practice
reading with all the learning tools, puzzles and games. Maybe this is the year you resolve to work on your family history. The Local History and Genealogy Room on LL1 at Main Library offers computers and wifi plus the online database Ancestry.com, microfilm readers for examining local papers back to the early days of Peoria and plenty of other local research resources. Expert help is available to help you find what you are looking for and members of the Genealogical Society also can help you get started. After all, you only resolved to try it and while it might not be your cup of tea, it might also develop into a new hobby! How about resolving to attend a library program? Take a look at our calendar in our newsletter Passages (you can subscribe at the bottom of the webpage or pick up a paper copy in at any location) or look at the calendar online. There is something for every age and interest. Programs are free and a great way to have a good time with a friend or family or all by yourself. Last, but not least, resolve to read something new. If you only read mysteries and haven’t touched a biography since you got out of school, this is the year. If you are not sure where to start, look at our book club listings, try one of our reader advisory tools, or look for the many books that have bookmarks inviting you to give them a try. Every one of these is an easy resolution that doesn’t involve exercising anything but your mind! Happy New Year and happy reading from Peoria Public Library! Trisha Noack, editor

Wellness Series Begins in January A new wellness series, taught by Dr. Matt Spangler, will begin on Monday, January 13 at 6:00 p.m. at Peoria Library North Branch in the Seminar Room and continue on the second Monday of each month through May. Each month the series will focus on a different area of health. The series is based on the “Maximized Living” plan that teaches people to lead a healthy lifestyle without gimmicks or elaborate diet plans. Dr. Spangler said, “Research has proven the health of the United States ranks at the bottom when compared to 37 industrialized countries. We take the most prescription drugs than any other country. Depression and anxiety are major struggles for all ages. One out of
four children is taking a prescription drug. One third of our population is overweight or obese. All of this leads to massive medical bills over a lifetime.” Dr. Matt Spangler has been with Maximized Living for seven years and been in practice as a chiropractor for four years. He is a husband, father, teacher and student of health. His passion is to teach as many people as possible how to live a truly healthy and rewarding life. He has advanced training in nutrition, detoxifying, spinal/postural correction, and exercise. Dr. Spangler is one of the doctors in the fastest growing wellness clinic in Peoria and is a new member to the Independent Sports Club of Peoria.

Seniors will begin applying for financial aid as they begin their college journey. The sooner you file, the more money you could get for college! On Tuesday, January 7 at Lakeview Branch from 6:00-7:00 p.m. you can hear about the ins and outs of (FAFSA), the form that is required by nearly all colleges. You will
learn how and when to complete it as well as the types of aid that are available to students through the FAFSA. Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club will meet on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Guilty Wives by James Patterson and David Ellis. Only minutes after Abbie Elliot and her three best friends step off of a private helicopter, they enter the most luxurious, sumptuous, sensually pampering hotel they have ever been to. Their lavish presidential suite overlooks Monte Carlo, and they surrender: to the sun and pool, to the sashimi and sake, to the Bruno Paillard champagne. For four days they’re free to live someone else’s life. As the weekend moves into pulsating discos, high-stakes casinos, and beyond, Abbie is transported to the greatest pleasure and release she has ever known. Abbie awakens on a yacht, surrounded by police. Something awful has happened--something impossible, unthinkable. Abbie, Winnie, Serena, and Bryah are arrested and accused of the foulest crime imaginable. And now the vacation of a lifetime becomes the fight of a lifetime — for survival. The Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club meets on Monday, February 10 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov for February. This is the classic that many sci/fi fans cut their eye teeth on. For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Sheldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future — to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save mankind, Sheldon gathers the best minds in the Empire — both scientists and scholars — and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the Galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for a future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation. But soon the fledgling Foundation finds itself at the mercy of corrupt warlords rising in the wake of the receding Empire. Mankind’s last best hope is faced with an agonizing choice: submit to the barbarians and be overrun — or fight them and be destroyed. Call 309-497-2149 for more information .
Peoria Reads Selection: Warriors Don’t Cry: A Searing Memoir of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock’s Central High by Melba Patillo Beals. In 1957, Melba Pattillo turned sixteen. That was also the year she became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, Melba was one of nine teenagers chosen to integrate Little Rock’s Central High School. Throughout her harrowing ordeal, Melba was taunted by her schoolmates and their parents, threatened by a lynch mob’s rope, attacked with lighted sticks of dynamite, and injured by acid sprayed in her eyes. But through it all, she acted with dignity and courage, and refused to back down. The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, February 9, at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss Warriors Don’t Cry: A Searing Memoir of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock’s Central High by Melba Patillo Beals. (Peoria Reads selection for 2014) For more information call 309-497-2186. Bibliophiles will meet on Wednesday, February 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss the Peoria Reads selection Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Patillo Beals. For more information, call Carol May at (309) 692-1020 or email cmay1223@comcast.net. The Read On Book Club will meet on Tuesday, February 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Branch to discuss Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Patillo Beals. Call 497-2601 for more information. Intercontinental Readers will continue to meet to discuss novels by American and Irish authors via Skype at Main Library LL 1 at 1:00 p.m. once every three months with readers in Ireland. The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 11, 2014 and the group will discuss Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks. Once again, the author takes a remarkable shard of history and brings it to vivid life. In 1665, a young man from Martha’s Vineyard
became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Upon this slender factual scaffold, she has created a luminous tale of love and faith, magic and adventure. The narrator of the story is Bethia Mayfield, growing up in the tiny settlement of Great Harbor amid a small band of pioneers and Puritans. Restless and curious, she yearns after an education that is closed to her by her sex. As often as she can, she slips away to explore the island’s glistening beaches and observe its native Wampanoag inhabitants. At twelve, she encounters Caleb, the young son of a chieftain, and the two forge a tentative secret friendship that draws each into the alien world of the other. Bethia’s minister father tries to convert the Wampanoag, awakening the wrath of the tribe’s shaman, against whose magic he must test his own beliefs. One of his projects becomes the education of Caleb, and a year later, Caleb is in Cambridge, studying Latin and Greek among the colonial elite. There, Bethia finds herself reluctantly indentured as a housekeeper and can closely observe Caleb’s crossing of cultures. Call 309-497-2143 for more information. Club Read will meet on Wednesday, February 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich. Erdrich’s 13th novel, a multigenerational tour de force of sin, redemption, murder and vengeance, finds its roots in the 1911 slaughter of a farming family near Pluto, North Dakota. The family’s infant daughter is spared, and a posse forms, incorrectly blames three Indians and lynches them. YA for Adults Book Club will meet on the third Tuesday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. A horrific family tragedy sends Jacob, 16, to a remote island off Wales, to the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, where he finds unusual old photographs. The children, one his grandfather, were more than peculiar, perhaps dangerous, quarantined for good reason - and maybe still alive.
