The Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club meets on Monday, April 14 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss 1862 by Robert Conroy. Outraged when the U.S. Navy seizes three Confederates aboard an English sailing ship, Britain retaliates by entering the fray in support of the Rebels–and suddenly it’s a whole new war. Once again, cotton is king as the North’s blockade crumbles before the might of the Royal Navy. While Lincoln confronts the monumental challenge of vanquishing mighty Britannia, the Redcoats revive their 1812 penchant for burning down American cities, and Union troops see Canada as ripe for the picking. From the Mississippi bayou to the Pennsylvania farmlands to the woods of Maine, the great armies of Generals Grant and Lee face off in the nation’s deadliest conflict. And to the victor goes history. Call 309-497-2149 for more information . Peoria Reads Selection: Warriors Don’t Cry: A Searing Memoir of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock’s Central High by Melba Patillo Beals. In 1957, Melba Pattillo turned sixteen. That was also the year she became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, Melba was one of nine teenagers chosen to integrate Little Rock’s Central High School. Throughout her harrowing ordeal, Melba was taunted by her schoolmates and their parents, threatened by a lynch mob’s rope, attacked with lighted sticks of dynamite, and injured by acid sprayed in her eyes. But through it all, she acted with dignity and courage, and refused to back down. For more information about book discussions and events for Peoria Reads! Visit www.peoriareads.com.

The Read On Book Club will meet on Tuesday, April 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Branch to discuss Church Boyz Series – Book 1 by H.H. Fowler. Pastor Leroy Paxton of Mount Moriah Baptist Church is forced to share the spotlight with ruthless blackmailer whose only intention is to take everything Pastor Paxton has achieved. Pastor Paxton nearly lost his life to cover up his secret sin. Forced to face his past, Paxton is placed in a position where the only way out costs him everything. Dominic Housten is being mentored by Abraham Winder, a man revered within the Mount Moriah church and whose belief in sexual purity and accountability is rigorously taught within the church’s mentoring program. Except Housten discovers Winder is not all he seems, when he stumbles upon Winder in a situation that leaves him in disbelief. Struggling with the betrayal, Housten turns to the pastor’s daughter, a woman he secretly loves. But the pastor’s daughter is married to a deacon of the church, Phillip Benjamin. Benjamin is a jealous man and suspects Housten of wanting more than just friendship with his wife. These four men’s intertwined lives illustrate no one is perfect, not even the righteous, and all

men, at times, face temptation away from the path of God. Each of these four men must fight to find their path once more and realize the consequences of their actions are far greater than any of them first believed. Call 497-2601 for more information. Intercontinental Readers will continue to meet to discuss novels by American and Irish authors via Skype at Main Library LL 1 at 1:00 p.m. once every three months with readers in Ireland. The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 20, 2014 and the group will discuss The Testament of Mary by Colm Tóibín. Tóibín writes a provocative imagining of the later years of the mother of Jesus. Mary finds herself living a solitary existence in Ephesus years after her son’s crucifixion and struggling with guilt, anger, and feelings that her son is not the son of God and that His sacrifice was not for a worthy cause. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. YA for Adults Book Club will meet on the third Tuesday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one. Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
